2019 Chevrolet Colorado problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Colorado (sharing mechanical commonality with the GMC Canyon), is a series of compact pickup trucks (mid-size since second generation) marketed by American automaker General Motors. They were introduced in 2004 to replace the Chevrolet S-10 and GMC S-15/Sonoma compact pickups. The Colorado is named after the U.S. state of Colorado, while the Canyon would be the deep chasm between cliffs.

First generation (2004)

The Chevrolet Colorado and its twin, the GMC Canyon were jointly designed by GM's North American operations, GM's Brazil operations, and Isuzu, which began selling its own version worldwide in 2002. In late 2005, Isuzu offered a version in North America called the Isuzu i-series. This North American model Isuzu shared North American powertrains, styling, and equipment with the Colorado/Canyon twins and differed from Isuzu's worldwide offering. All Chevrolet, GMC, and Isuzu versions worldwide are based on the GMT355, itself the basis for the GMT 345-based Hummer H3. Most vehicles for markets outside North America are manufactured at a GM plant in Rayong, Thailand. All North American-market vehicles were manufactured by Shreveport Operations.

The cooperation between GM and Isuzu to build a light-duty truck and offer it in North America returns to an original arrangement the two companies had in the 1970s with the Chevrolet LUV, a rebadged Isuzu Faster.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-12
  • VIN: 1GCGTDEN8K1
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: My vehicle has only 70,000 miles on it. My transmission began to shimmy and is getting worse and worse and several technicians have told me the transmission will have to be replaced. The parts are not available anywhere in the country to rebuild the parts of the transmission that are defective. Secondly I was told I could replace the transmission but there are no transmissions available in the entire country to repair my vehicle with. After investigation on the internet this is a massive problem with this model vehicle and Chevy has been well aware of it for years. A few months ago I had the same problem with them air conditioner compressor. There were no air conditioner compressors available anywhere in the country for my four and a half year old vehicle.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-02
  • VIN: 1GCPTEE13K1
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: This truck has roughly 41000 miles on it. As I was driving home from work on [XXX], I heard a faint noise and then my truck just lost power and died on the freeway. There were no engine warning lights on and did not want to restart and stay running. After a few times of starting and dying the message on the dash said keep driving engine is in regen. This is a diesel truck and the newer ones have a regeneration that is done with DEF. I was unable to get it off onto the exit, but did get it off the roadway. The vehicle was towed into the shop on February 3rd, 2024. The shop had to order parts and said that it was just a faulty part. I received the truck back on March 14th. I drove it home from the shop and to work for two days putting roughly 100 miles on the truck. On my way home on [XXX] , the truck died again with no warning at all. Same symptoms, just no power and no warning. The truck was towed back to the shop where it still sits today. The problem is there is an issue with this thing dying without any warning at all. The dealer and Chevrolet techs have been unsuccessful in finding the problem. It has been almost 6 months in the shop with literally no idea of what is wrong. I feel this is a serious safety issue that could leave people or families stranded without any warning or idea of how to repair. I feel this should be investigated and brought to someone's attention. I have contacted Chevrolet, but unfortunately they have left everything up to the dealership. The dealer is Auburn Chevrolet in Auburn, WA. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-19
  • VIN: 1GCGTCEN4K1
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I cannot remove the key from the ignition switch after shutting it off. The engine will shut down but the key stays on the accessories position eventually causing the battery to go dead. It doesn't do it all the time, but it at some point in time it will become permanent. I consider this a very serious safety issue as I cannot lock the vehicle therefore it can be very easily stolen. Since I cannot lock it, a child could get in the vehicle and start it up and who knows what would happen after that. I also owned another GM vehicle with the same issue the key could not be removed from the ignition switch. Because an injury was involved a GM Rep came to check it out. After working several hours, he told us he could not find anything wrong with the ignition. It seems funny we never had an issue with it after he had checked it out. Lawsuit averted! I firmly believe this is a serious safety issue must be investigated!!

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-15
  • VIN: 1GCGTDEN0K1
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: Steering binding hard in turns. Turns over 45 deg of steering wheel rotation cause periodic binding in the turn, regardless of vehicle speed. Can be reproduced when the truck isn’t moving. Very nearly caused a serious accident as could not control direction out of a turn at 30 mph, and had to come to a rapid stop to avoid hitting another car. Wiggling the steering wheel in both directions with moderate force/torque releases the binding steering. Vehicle only has 44,000 mi with no off-road use. Vehicle is going in for service on 4/18/24. Extremely dangerous failure mode, whatever it turns out to be.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-06
  • VIN: 1GCGTEEN5K1
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: February 2023 my son was driving 40 mph (approx) and the power steering became disabled. We took the truck to Landers McLarty Chevrolet. They never mentioned a known recall for this issue on previous year models. The Truck only had 27,000 miles but was out of warranty for the 3 years had expired in August. They gave an initial estimate and repair of $750. Picked up the vehicle and on the way home same thing happens again - lost power steering and then had warning lights on dash after it went out. Took it directly back to dealership. 3 attempts and 5 weeks later including +-$5K cost for 3 different repairs - issue seemed to be resolved. The issue returned today as my son was driving 55 mph (approx) lost power steering in extremely heavy traffic. Knowing what had happened before he was able to navigate to an exit without having an accident. There seems to be a known issue with the power steering on the Colorado. There was a previous recall on earlier year. I had made complaints and spoke to GM multiple times and they said it needed to go through the dealer. GM never mentioned any recall issue with power steering on previous years and offered no direction on possible issues as the truck sat for weeks on end with no resolution.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-18
  • VIN: 1GCHSBEA9K1
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: The electronic power steering failed while driving making the steering of the vehicle difficult and if my wife or child had been driving this could have resulted in an accident if they could not steer the vehicle without the power assistance. The instrument cluster displayed to service the power steering unit. Mechanics diagnostic is that it was the corrosion of water entering the system. Also that this I a known problem. There was a recall recently for 2015 models for what appears now to be a technical service bulletin for the newer years of the vehicle. This is a dangerous issue that seems to have now plagued multiple years of the Colorado pickup. The mechanic also stated that AUL service warranty (protective asset protection) denied the claim to repair as it is a known issue.... Currently attempting to speak with them to appeal the decision. The warranty company is also not above board as well as they have worded their contract to be misleading with provisions to deny claims due to common causes of failure. Realistically if Chevrolet did not address the problem of the 2015 model year the recall should be expanded.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-17
  • VIN: 1GCHTDEN3K1
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: When I put the truck in park it goes into park fine. I can turn the engine off but I can't remove the key because the ignition switch won't go all the way forward. The lights stay on and also the radio. I had to repeatedly start and stop the truck and move the gear shift selector to remove key. I had the same problem in February 2022. The dealer fixed it by replacing gear shift selector while under warranty. The problem was remedied. Said this was happening and there was a TSB about this problem. This problem was never consistent. Now in Aug. 2023 I am having the same problem. The truck is no longer under warranty and the dealer says that I must pay to have it diagnosed and fixed. Chevrolet is aware they have this problem with several different models and don't want to acknowledge it and take responsibility. There are several class action lawsuits filed about this. This is a safety issue because I just can't leave the truck with the key in the ignition. I looked online and have seen that Chevrolet has this problem with several models of different years. They should find a solution and have a recall to address this problem. The dealer also told me my truck was actually worth less if I were to trade it in because of this problem. Should have said something in 2019 as they knew about this problem since at least 2016. They fix the problem by replacing faulty parts with the same faulty parts.

  • VIN: 1GCGTDEN8K1
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: While driving steering assist went out and the steering wheel would hang up and make it hard to control. You could get past the stoping point with effort but the control would wonder and make it hard to turn. Luckily it happened close to home because it would have been hard to control at speed and in traffic.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-03-03
  • VIN: 1GCGTCENXK1
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: The truck has a hard downshift and when stopping and starting again at a stop sign it will lunge forward sometimes. Also, when holding speed at 50-60 mph you can feel a slight shutter like the truck is not running correctly. The dealer flushed the transmission when I purchased the truck but the issue continued so I made an appointment with the service department on march 3,2023.They took the truck on a road test and did notice the hard downshift and noted that this is a normal characteristic of this transmission(this is not normal and is unsafe)and will not offer to repair it.It is now the end of July 2023 and the issue continues and no one seems to want to do anything about it.I am going to take it back again but I am probably going to get the same answer

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-07
  • VIN: 1GCGTDEN9K1
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: We purchased a 2019 Chevrolet Colorado December 2022. Beginning in January 2023 to current month July 2023 the vehicle has been at the dealership 4 times for the same occurrence: SERVICE STABILITRAK and ENGINE POWER IS REDUCED A warning “ding” sounds (the same noise as seatbelt, door ajar, etc) simultaneously with the messages “SERVICE STABILITRAK” and “ENGINE POWER IS REDUCED” The vehicle immediately is jerking or lurching, the engine no longer runs smoothly and is misfiring. The engine power reduced does not allow safe acceleration, and the vehicle is unstable (as it moves it feels like driving over a thousand speed bumps over and over), the engine misfiring is heard from the exhaust and the vehicle is visibly vibrating, on acceleration the maximum speed is 20 mph. All 4 times this has happened while driving the vehicle on highways in traffic. We are left unable to get out of the way of moving traffic, unable to accelerate, change lanes or make turns safely. Three of the four times we had the vehicle towed to the dealership. The last time the vehicle did this fortunately I was near our local dealership and drove it less than a mile so the service people could “witness” what I had been trying to explain what’s been happening with this vehicle. This is a very serious issue! My husband is 75 and very ill. I have to drive him 100+ miles for treatments on a regular basis. We cannot continue to be put in danger because of this vehicle default. We need this problem fixed not only for ourselves but for the safety of others, including unsuspecting drivers and innocent passengers, young, elderly, disabled, some simply misunderstanding our vehicles “failures to perform” in traffic on the roads. A trusted vehicle is very important. A stabile vehicle with sufficient engine power is a must if we are going to put it on the roads. “SERVICE STABILITRAK” and “ENGINE POWER IS REDUCED” is not new. General Motors needs to take action to correct this problem and educate dealers.

Negative 2019 Chevrolet Colorado car reviews

  1. Jovanny Morissette 2024-11-26

GM/Chevy built a decent truck, but unfortunately missed the mark with the fuel system and technology items. As someone who drives the truck daily, I have found the audio system to be poorly functioning. It randomly changes my play order or simply doesn't function until I restart the truck. It seems like they never tried what they programmed before sending it to market. The ability to upgrade the firmware has real bottlenecks as well. As for the fuel system, the cap-less design is far from ideal. I have never experienced a fuel system where I could not fill my tank as you would normally. At first, I thought the reason I was running out of fuel so fast (at least the fuel light coming on) was because the sending unit was saying I was out of fuel before I really was. I was only getting a few hundred miles per fill up. After leaving my car at the factory on my own dime for the rental, GM came back to tell me it was my problem and sent me instructions on how to fill my tank. If you read the forums, you can find that it's an issue with their design. Plan on taking extra time to spoon feed the tank. GM chooses to put their head in the sand on this one. Many have said the problem is with back pressure shutting pumps off before your tank is filled. The truck says it has a 20.6-gallon tank, but you get far less (12 to 15) in before the pump will stop. Overall, I am less than impressed with GM and Chevy's lack of honesty. While the truck works fine as a truck, the conveniences are more of inconveniences though.

  2. Brant Lang 2024-09-17

I purchased my 2019 Colorado in April and unfortunately, I have experienced some issues with it. There seems to be a significant problem with the rear of the truck, as it makes some unpleasant sounds and vibrations. Initially, I was told that this was normal, but I don't believe that anyone would want to pay over 30k for a truck that sounds and runs so poorly. Additionally, I have had some problems with the screen and radio going black and not working, as well as loud brakes when backing up and some shuttering while idling. I am disappointed with my purchase, as I did not experience these issues during my test drive and they only started to occur around 300 miles. Unfortunately, the issues have still not been resolved after 5000 miles and over 2 months of waiting.

  3. Ladarius Stroman 2024-09-01

Update: 7/15/21: Hey there! Just wanted to give you a quick update on my truck. Unfortunately, it's been a bit of a money pit lately... I just had to replace all 4 tires (<35K Miles), and despite regular maintenance and rotations, it consistently drops out of alignment, which costs me $200.00 for a 4-wheel alignment. On the bright side, with the used car market on fire right now, both Carvana and Vroom have offered me more than I paid for it, so it's going to the glue factory... as one of the reporters here says, I will consider the ZR2 again when I purchase, if it's still available. It's been a year since I bought it (July 2020), and while it's been okay, the quality just isn't there. Unfortunately, the transmission is terrible, especially between 45 and 65 miles an hour. It doesn't want to downshift and prefers to stay in overdrive gear, which makes the truck run terribly. I'm hoping that Chevy can produce a software update to help with the shifting. The truck is cool, but I wouldn't buy it again. Maintenance costs are pretty high (at least here in VA). For example, I had the wipers replaced, and it cost $75.00 - WTH? I will be returning to Toyota as soon as the new FJ Cruiser is released. Sorry, Chevy, nice try, but no cigar! In my opinion, it's still junk and not worth the price by a mile. If you really need a 4X4 with awesome capability, spend the extra money and get the Ford Raptor. There's a reason it's the world's best off-road truck. Again, sorry Chevy, but I will be leaving the family soon. Hurry up, Toyota, I want my new FJ!

  4. Jeromy Sporer 2024-07-25

Hey there! Just a heads up, I'd recommend avoiding the V-6 with the 8 speed transmission due to some issues with the torque converter shuddering. Unfortunately, GM hasn't found a solution for this problem yet. But don't worry, aside from that, I really like the truck!

Hey there! I'm glad to hear that there are no issues with your truck!

  2. Gaston Jaskolski 2024-10-15

  3. Consuelo Keebler 2024-10-06

It seems like some 2019 Colorados have been experiencing shuddering and low gas mileage within the first 2000 miles. This can be a frustrating issue to deal with. If you're experiencing this problem, it's recommended that you take your truck to the dealer to have the factory transmission fluid flushed and replaced. Additionally, some drivers have noticed that the flare side fender for the rear wheels catches a lot of mud and rocks from the front tires on the highway. It would be great to see a redesign of the mud flaps to address this issue. The front bumper and grill could also use some improvements, as the current design tends to catch a lot of bugs and birds, which can be difficult to clean. When washing the radiator from the front, you may notice a stink that doesn't seem to go away. This is because the Colorado has a rubber guard or air seal under and in front of the radiator that keeps all of the bugs piled up. Unfortunately, it's not possible to wash them out. If you roll down the passenger side rear window at 55 mph or faster, you may notice some wind noise. Additionally, the paint job on the Colorado is quite thin and not protected with any kind of paint guard. The tailgate can also catch a lot of road grime, dirt, and even road tar. While these issues can be frustrating, it's important to remember that every vehicle has its quirks. With a little extra care and attention, you can keep your Colorado looking and running great!

I've owned five Toyota Tacomas over the years and have generally liked them. However, as I've gotten older, I've come to appreciate the better ride and handling of the Chevy Colorado Z-71. The Colorado may not be the best at everything, but it does everything well. I love the V-6 engine power and the gas mileage. I'm not a big off-road or rock climbing guy, but I know how well the Colorado performs off-road for my purposes - great! The inside is very comfortable, and the crew cab has plenty of room. Overall, I much prefer the look of this truck compared to others in its class.

The truck is a great vehicle! Although there is a small jolt when starting and sometimes the electronics don't come on right away, there's nothing else bad about the truck.
