Chevrolet Cavalier problems

The Chevrolet Cavalier is a line of compact cars produced by Chevrolet. Serving as the replacement of the Chevrolet Monza, the Cavalier was the second Chevrolet model line to adopt front-wheel drive. Three versions of the Cavalier have been sold, including three generations sold in North America from model years 1982 to 2005, a version produced by SAIC-GM for China from 2016 to 2021, and a SAIC-GM version produced for Mexico since the 2019 model year.
The Cavalier was among the inaugural vehicles of the GM J platform. One of the first "world cars" of General Motors, the J platform was developed for use by each North American GM division (with the exception of GMC), alongside international models for Opel, Vauxhall, and Holden. Though sharing chassis underpinnings, J-body cars from Europe and Australia used slightly different body designs and different powertrains; in Europe, the Vauxhall Cavalier and Opel Ascona were marketed as mid-size cars. Initially a divisional counterpart of the Buick Skyhawk, Cadillac Cimarron, Oldsmobile Firenza, and Pontiac J2000, the Cavalier was primarily marketed alongside the Pontiac Sunbird (renamed the Pontiac Sunfire for 1995).
The 1982-2005 Cavalier was produced by multiple GM facilities across North America. For 2005, the Chevrolet Cobalt replaced the model line in North America.

Common Chevrolet Cavalier problems
The Chevrolet Cavalier, produced from 1981 to 2005, has been a popular choice among car buyers due to its affordability, reliability, and fuel efficiency. However, like any vehicle, the Cavalier has its share of common problems.
Electrical issues are the most prevalent problems in the 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier, accounting for nearly two-thirds of the total complaints on file with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Another common problem in the 2004 Cavalier is steering fluid leaks, which can lead to difficulty in turning the steering wheel if not consistently refilled.
The 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier also has its share of problems, with fuel pump failure being the leading cause for complaint, affecting 343 vehicles.
Powertrain complaints are less common in the 2003 Cavalier, with only 17 reports filed, but they can indicate early signs of transmission failure, such as rough shifting and failure to go into gear.
In terms of reliability, the Cavalier has been praised for its dependability and fuel efficiency, with some drivers reporting over 300,000 miles on the original transmission.
In conclusion, while the Chevrolet Cavalier has been a popular and reliable choice for many car buyers, it is not without its common problems, particularly in the electrical and fuel systems. Regular maintenance and prompt attention to any issues can help ensure the longevity and reliability of this vehicle.
How many miles will a Cavalier last?
There are reports of 2003 Cavaliers topping 300,000 miles with the original powertrain and engine. One mechanic at Car Gurus even claims to have worked on an engine with 440,000 miles on it. But, as you can't vouch for the previous owner's maintenance habits, expect a lifespan of around 250,000 miles.

Chevrolet Cavalier Ratings Overview
68 car owners like you reviewed their Chevrolet Cavalier. The average rating is a 3.8 out of 5 stars.
Why did Chevy stop making Cavaliers?
Contrary to the American markets, however, the cavalier remained on sale in other regions like Mexico for example. Stopping the Cavalier's production was a logical decision based on the declining sedan sales in the United States, a decision that left only the Malibu to represent the sedan segment in Chevrolet's lineup.
How much is a Chevy Cavalier worth?
Prices for a used Chevrolet Cavalier currently range from $2,490 to $6,980, with vehicle mileage ranging from 60,579 to 175,946.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it back in November 2003 with 56,000 miles on it, and now it has 148,000 miles. I'm happy to say that it has been very reliable, and I've only needed to change the brakes a couple of times, which I did myself. I also added an aftermarket air intake, which made a huge difference in performance. The 2.4 engine is very eager, and I've been getting about 29 mpg every time I fill up, but on road trips, I've seen as much as 38 mpg. Although there are some squeaks, rattles, and engine noises, I just turn up the radio and enjoy the ride!

I've had my '04 Cavalier for a little over 40K miles and has proven to be a great car, anywhere and in any season. I bought the car in March '05 w/28K on it, traded in a '99 Malibu. The thing I like most about the "Cavy" is the gas mileage both city and highway. I've got it up to 39mpg once, and now that I live 3 miles from work, I only have to fill the tank once every two weeks, which is good considering gas prices. Other things I like are the handling and V6 like acceleration that comes from the low maintenance, high efficiency 2.2L Ecotec engine.

I bought this car brand new back in 2001 and it has been an amazing ride ever since! It has proven to be one of the most reliable vehicles I have ever driven, even after accumulating 145,000 miles. The car has many great features such as its fuel economy of 33HW 29C and its smooth driving experience. Although the interior may be considered cheap, it is still a fantastic car that is very reliable. I use it for everything from long trips to simply running errands. If you are looking for an affordable and fun car, this is definitely the one for you!

I absolutely adore Cavaliers! Our family has had two of them and I bought this one back in 2009 for $4000. I love stick shifts and this car has been a dream to drive. It gets about 34mpg on the highway and 30mpg in the city, which is great for my daily commute to work. This car has been incredibly reliable and I've had very few repairs. I did have to replace the alternator, but that's a common issue with most cars. One time, my mom was driving on a deserted road at night when the alternator went out, but luckily she was able to safely coast into town. We still laugh about that night! Recently, I had to replace some plate springs behind the clutch and the clutch itself, but now the car drives even better than before. There are a few minor issues, like an oxygen sensor that needs to be replaced and a seat belt spring that doesn't work perfectly, but overall it's been a great car. The cruise control works well, although it sometimes cuts out when I turn on the blinker. I'm also planning to replace the radio soon, since the area can fit a bigger one. The car looks sporty and the sun roof is a great feature. The trunk is a good size and the back seat folds down for extra space. I love this car so much that I'll definitely consider getting a newer model when it's time for a new one. It's a shame they didn't continue making this line.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my car. I was lucky enough to purchase it at an auction when it was only 2 years old and had 66k miles on it. Since then, I've put another 82k miles on it and have had very few issues. Shortly after purchasing it, we did have to replace the flywheel, but that was only because the previous owner had installed the wrong starter. Other than that, we've only had to replace the battery and tires. The engine has never needed any work and still runs great! The tape player is starting to wear out, but the stereo is still in good condition. Overall, I've been very happy with this car and would definitely recommend it to others.

This is my second Cavelier, bought new in 1997. For both of them, the engines held up extremely well as I piled on the miles, but they were not particularly exciting to drive. In hindsight, I should have considered a Honda Civic. The Civic is a great car that offers better mileage, long-term reliability, and resale value for a similar price.

Although my Cav had a number of computer problems that caused the 'check engine' light to come on frequently, the dealer could never find anything wrong when I took it to them. However, the controls are close to your fingertips and easy to use. While the interior may look cheap due to the plastic materials used, this car is not recommended for inexperienced drivers, despite the fact that I see them driving it all too frequently. Although the car's performance in the crash test was not ideal, it still has its strengths.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share that I purchased my Z24 back in May of 2002. Since then, I haven't had any major issues with it, although the clutch has been a bit unreliable. The power in this car is truly remarkable - it just flies! While the interior is pretty basic and typical of GM design, it's not too bad for a '92. Overall, I would say that it's a basic car with a big engine.

It's great fun to drive! The engine is super responsive and it handles and corners really well. So far, I haven't had any mechanical problems and I'm getting around 27 mpg.

Vehicle year: 1995
I bought a '95 Cavalier to replace my old car, but unfortunately, it has had some mechanical issues. In the past 7 months, it has had 6 problems. On the first day, I discovered an issue with the transmission which caused it to freeze up and not switch gears when it warmed up. The water pump also broke, and it took a few jugs of antifreeze before it could be fixed. The transmission started to go, and the car would max out at 50. One day, the back door popped open around a turn, and recently, it has been difficult to get it to 30mph. The exhaust system is also quite low, and the converter looks like it might need replacing soon.
