Chevrolet Cavalier problems

The Chevrolet Cavalier is a line of compact cars produced by Chevrolet. Serving as the replacement of the Chevrolet Monza, the Cavalier was the second Chevrolet model line to adopt front-wheel drive. Three versions of the Cavalier have been sold, including three generations sold in North America from model years 1982 to 2005, a version produced by SAIC-GM for China from 2016 to 2021, and a SAIC-GM version produced for Mexico since the 2019 model year.
The Cavalier was among the inaugural vehicles of the GM J platform. One of the first "world cars" of General Motors, the J platform was developed for use by each North American GM division (with the exception of GMC), alongside international models for Opel, Vauxhall, and Holden. Though sharing chassis underpinnings, J-body cars from Europe and Australia used slightly different body designs and different powertrains; in Europe, the Vauxhall Cavalier and Opel Ascona were marketed as mid-size cars. Initially a divisional counterpart of the Buick Skyhawk, Cadillac Cimarron, Oldsmobile Firenza, and Pontiac J2000, the Cavalier was primarily marketed alongside the Pontiac Sunbird (renamed the Pontiac Sunfire for 1995).
The 1982-2005 Cavalier was produced by multiple GM facilities across North America. For 2005, the Chevrolet Cobalt replaced the model line in North America.

Common Chevrolet Cavalier problems
The Chevrolet Cavalier, produced from 1981 to 2005, has been a popular choice among car buyers due to its affordability, reliability, and fuel efficiency. However, like any vehicle, the Cavalier has its share of common problems.
Electrical issues are the most prevalent problems in the 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier, accounting for nearly two-thirds of the total complaints on file with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Another common problem in the 2004 Cavalier is steering fluid leaks, which can lead to difficulty in turning the steering wheel if not consistently refilled.
The 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier also has its share of problems, with fuel pump failure being the leading cause for complaint, affecting 343 vehicles.
Powertrain complaints are less common in the 2003 Cavalier, with only 17 reports filed, but they can indicate early signs of transmission failure, such as rough shifting and failure to go into gear.
In terms of reliability, the Cavalier has been praised for its dependability and fuel efficiency, with some drivers reporting over 300,000 miles on the original transmission.
In conclusion, while the Chevrolet Cavalier has been a popular and reliable choice for many car buyers, it is not without its common problems, particularly in the electrical and fuel systems. Regular maintenance and prompt attention to any issues can help ensure the longevity and reliability of this vehicle.
How many miles will a Cavalier last?
There are reports of 2003 Cavaliers topping 300,000 miles with the original powertrain and engine. One mechanic at Car Gurus even claims to have worked on an engine with 440,000 miles on it. But, as you can't vouch for the previous owner's maintenance habits, expect a lifespan of around 250,000 miles.

Why did Chevy stop making Cavaliers?
Contrary to the American markets, however, the cavalier remained on sale in other regions like Mexico for example. Stopping the Cavalier's production was a logical decision based on the declining sedan sales in the United States, a decision that left only the Malibu to represent the sedan segment in Chevrolet's lineup.
How much is a Chevy Cavalier worth?
Prices for a used Chevrolet Cavalier currently range from $2,490 to $6,980, with vehicle mileage ranging from 60,579 to 175,946.

Vehicle year: 2002
I bought a 2002 Cavalier in 2003 and had it for 9 years. I gave it to my brother's teenage kid in 2012 with 277,000 miles on it, and he drove it for 3 more years until it finally died. What a car! This was the LS model, gold color, automatic transmission, 4-door. The 2.2 engine (and transmission) never had any issues, ever! The worst fix was probably wheel bearings, but heck, this car lasted past 300,000 miles. What more can you ask for? It's the best car I have ever owned, and I'm 54 years old. Then in 2012, I bought another 2002 Cavalier with 112,000 miles on it. This was the base model, and I just traded it in yesterday with 189,000 miles on it. This car wasn't quite as good, had major rust issues (could literally peel it off), and I had to replace all of the pipes and muffler-related parts. The ABS went out on it about a year ago, so I ignored it. Still, it braked fine. But again, no engine or transmission problems with this car. No electrical issues either (except a battery 2 years ago, big deal). Bottom line: I would highly recommend the Cavalier as it is very durable, and on each car, I spent no more than $1500 maintaining it, which is almost nothing when you consider how long I had each car. The amazing thing is that even if it was -25 in Minnesota, those cars start every time! I hope Chevy can bring the Cavalier back. If they do, I would buy one in a heartbeat. I drove both many, many miles, and I got more than my money's worth.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my recent experience with my Mom's 1999 LS 4 door sedan. She had to stop driving and kindly passed it on to me. With 106,000 miles on it, I drove it all the way from Sarasota, FL to Boston, MA without any issues at all! It was so comfortable and handled the highway like a dream. Of course, it's not the smoothest ride on bumpy city roads, but overall it's a great car. I'm even considering getting another Chevy in the future! The exterior is in perfect condition, but unfortunately, the interior near the windshield has cracked and is falling off, so it needs to be replaced. Also, the cup holders are a bit of a joke. But, despite these minor issues, I really enjoyed the drive home, even trying to beat Hurricane Earl! Thanks for listening.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my GM car. Despite hearing some horror stories, I've been pleasantly surprised by how reliable it's been. In the 7 years that I've owned it, I've only had to make one major repair when the solenoid for the transmission failed at 83,000 miles. Although the car was still driveable, it would get stuck in overdrive on the highway and the engine would die upon deceleration. On the bright side, the body and paint still look like new! If only the crash test performance were better, I would definitely consider getting another Cavalier. Take care!

Runs well and always starts even on cold days. Although it has had some electrical issues, it is a great car to start out with and is relatively hardy. I did have a power window motor go up in smoke, but luckily there was no damage. Before buying, I would recommend looking over the wiring. Overall, it's a great car with everything a student would need to get around.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share a bit about my 2000 Cavalier with you. It's been with me for nearly ten years now and has been an absolute joy to drive. With 123,000 miles on the car, it still runs like a dream and gets an average of 28 mpg between city and highway driving. The 2.2 litre engine is fantastic and makes driving a breeze. I've had very little trouble with the car and it's been incredibly reliable. I haven't experienced any leaks and everything still works perfectly. It's also held up well over the years and still looks great. I paid $13,000 for it new and it's been worth every penny. I've owned many cars from different manufacturers, but this one has been the most reliable and I have no plans to sell or trade it. Thanks for listening!

This car has been burning oil since the day I bought it. Despite my repeated attempts to fix the issue, the valve cover gasket replacement did not solve the problem. The starter has been replaced three times, and the car was recalled for the gasket leaking antifreeze, which was not correctly fixed. Additionally, the transmission fluid started leaking a couple of months ago, and the air conditioner repair cost is over $800. I am confident that these issues can be resolved with the right expertise and attention.

The car was purchased while still under factory warranty. Unfortunately, there were several issues that arose, including knocking lifters, rattling interior, and a noisy muffler. Additionally, there was a defect in the head gaskets which ultimately led to the engine blowing up. Despite efforts to address the issues, the subsequent engine has continued to experience problems with emissions and drivability. It is clear that a thorough investigation is required to identify and resolve these issues.

If you're considering buying this car, my review might be very helpful. It's a bit long, so feel free to skip to the end for my recommendations. Back in 2010, I purchased a base model 2dr Cavalier with a manual transmission for around $4500. Looking back, I can tell you that it wasn't worth that much, even if KBB said so. In 2016, I sold it to a friend for about $550. During the 6 years I owned it, I put around 60k miles on it and I was so glad to get rid of it. On the plus side, it's a fairly reliable mode of transportation, the heating and A/C still work, and the road noise isn't too bad. However, there were quite a few downsides during my ownership. The rocker panels were rusting badly behind the doors, the intermittent wiper mode didn't work properly (wipers got stuck mid-cycle), and the suspension, front seats, and back seats (anyone taller than 5' 9The gear changes were long, but the car shifted smoothly nonetheless. However, upon reflection, I realized that a hatchback or a 4-door vehicle would have been a more practical choice. While the 2-door Cavalier is not the most practical car, it could still be used as a winter beater or for short commutes. If you're looking for a more practical compact Chevy that isn't built in Korea, consider the 4-door Cobalt. It's a better option than the 2-door Cavalier and the 4-door Cavalier. Ultimately, it's important to do your research and choose a car that suits your needs. I hope my experience can help guide you in making the right choice.
