Chevrolet Cavalier problems
The Chevrolet Cavalier is a line of compact cars produced by Chevrolet. Serving as the replacement of the Chevrolet Monza, the Cavalier was the second Chevrolet model line to adopt front-wheel drive. Three versions of the Cavalier have been sold, including three generations sold in North America from model years 1982 to 2005, a version produced by SAIC-GM for China from 2016 to 2021, and a SAIC-GM version produced for Mexico since the 2019 model year.
The Cavalier was among the inaugural vehicles of the GM J platform. One of the first "world cars" of General Motors, the J platform was developed for use by each North American GM division (with the exception of GMC), alongside international models for Opel, Vauxhall, and Holden. Though sharing chassis underpinnings, J-body cars from Europe and Australia used slightly different body designs and different powertrains; in Europe, the Vauxhall Cavalier and Opel Ascona were marketed as mid-size cars. Initially a divisional counterpart of the Buick Skyhawk, Cadillac Cimarron, Oldsmobile Firenza, and Pontiac J2000, the Cavalier was primarily marketed alongside the Pontiac Sunbird (renamed the Pontiac Sunfire for 1995).
The 1982-2005 Cavalier was produced by multiple GM facilities across North America. For 2005, the Chevrolet Cobalt replaced the model line in North America.

Common Chevrolet Cavalier problems
The Chevrolet Cavalier, produced from 1981 to 2005, has been a popular choice among car buyers due to its affordability, reliability, and fuel efficiency. However, like any vehicle, the Cavalier has its share of common problems.
Electrical issues are the most prevalent problems in the 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier, accounting for nearly two-thirds of the total complaints on file with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Another common problem in the 2004 Cavalier is steering fluid leaks, which can lead to difficulty in turning the steering wheel if not consistently refilled.
The 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier also has its share of problems, with fuel pump failure being the leading cause for complaint, affecting 343 vehicles.
Powertrain complaints are less common in the 2003 Cavalier, with only 17 reports filed, but they can indicate early signs of transmission failure, such as rough shifting and failure to go into gear.
In terms of reliability, the Cavalier has been praised for its dependability and fuel efficiency, with some drivers reporting over 300,000 miles on the original transmission.
In conclusion, while the Chevrolet Cavalier has been a popular and reliable choice for many car buyers, it is not without its common problems, particularly in the electrical and fuel systems. Regular maintenance and prompt attention to any issues can help ensure the longevity and reliability of this vehicle.
How many miles will a Cavalier last?
There are reports of 2003 Cavaliers topping 300,000 miles with the original powertrain and engine. One mechanic at Car Gurus even claims to have worked on an engine with 440,000 miles on it. But, as you can't vouch for the previous owner's maintenance habits, expect a lifespan of around 250,000 miles.

Chevrolet Cavalier Ratings Overview
68 car owners like you reviewed their Chevrolet Cavalier. The average rating is a 3.8 out of 5 stars.
Why did Chevy stop making Cavaliers?
Contrary to the American markets, however, the cavalier remained on sale in other regions like Mexico for example. Stopping the Cavalier's production was a logical decision based on the declining sedan sales in the United States, a decision that left only the Malibu to represent the sedan segment in Chevrolet's lineup.
How much is a Chevy Cavalier worth?
Prices for a used Chevrolet Cavalier currently range from $2,490 to $6,980, with vehicle mileage ranging from 60,579 to 175,946.

Vehicle year: 1996
My Chevy Cavalier was my first car and I absolutely loved it! I bought it used and it ran great for all 3 years that I had it. Unfortunately, I had to part ways with it due to a car accident. However, I was amazed by how well it performed during the accident. Despite being hit from behind by a driver going about 35 miles per hour, and hitting the car in front of me, I only sustained minor injuries from the airbags. It was definitely a dependable car during the most crucial time. I highly recommend this car to anyone looking for style and reliability. I truly loved my Cavalier!

Vehicle year: 1993
I bought this car brand new in 1993 and it has been my trusty companion ever since. Despite the odometer showing an impressive 293,000 miles, it still has the original engine and transmission, and the clutch assembly is factory. On long highway drives, it has achieved an impressive 40 mpg. I have taken good care of it, changing the oil at regular intervals, and it has only left me stranded once when the fuel pump went out. Over the years, I have replaced the tires, belts, hoses, shocks, brakes, shifter cable, and alternators, but it has never needed a valve adjustment. I am not sure if it has a timing chain, but if it does, I have never had to replace it. My goal was to replace it at 300k, but I don't think I will have to. It gets 30mpg in the city if driven at the speed limit, and the insurance is only $240 a year. This is by far the best car I have ever owned!

Vehicle year: 2000
I absolutely love my 2000 Cavalier 4dr stick-shift! I bought it brand new in 2000 and it has been the perfect fuel-efficient transportation for me. I never expected to become so attached to it, but this car has truly done it all. I've even pulled a small trailer with it since it was new and I've only had to replace the clutch once at 109k miles. It consistently gets an impressive 36 mpg on the interstate and 28-30 mpg for daily driving. I've taken this car on adventures that most people wouldn't dare to take a 4wd truck on. While it may not have the luxury of a Mercedes, the design and ride comfort are still great for a Cavalier. With 116k miles, I'm hoping to get another 10 years out of this amazing car. When the time comes to say goodbye, I'll be on the lookout for another ride as wonderful as this one!

Your parents bought a 1991 Cavalier RS 2-door coupe 3-speed automatic a few years back and when you got your license, you were able to take it over. It's been a very reliable car, with only normal maintenance, like brakes. The only other issue was a sway bar link. It might not be the fastest car out there, but it's extremely reliable and gets from A to B with no problems. You even hit a deer and the car didn't get damaged at all.

I think the 03 is the best. I'm not quite sure why Edmund's feels this car is old. From a practical point of view, it received new fascias and an engine in 03, and the transmission is a new design. The interior is not as cheap as you say. As for the rest of the car, there's only so much you can do when something works. Why is it that when imports change fascias, Edmunds hails it as a complete redesign, but when U.S. manufacturers do it, it's insignificant and the car is still considered old design? The Elantra is worse, I drove both. The only feature that beats the Cav is the 100k warranty, but it doesn't help resale. If you read the small print, you'll find that you can't sell it outside of your family, which doesn't help resale. I suggest doing a REAL test and driving each with 30k miles. You'll find out why the CAV CONS RATING is high.

The 2004 Cavalier was my first new car purchase, having purchased used cars prior. After driving over 180,000 miles, I can honestly say that I cannot really complain. It did what it was purchased to do - used as a commuter car, averaging over 400+ miles per week. Even after all of those miles, it still gets 30+ mpg. Although it has a road-noisy ride, the CD player no longer works, and the shifter needs to be replaced [as it is hard to get into 1st or 2nd and is really loose], for a

This car has been amazing! While it may not be the most stylish car out there, it's definitely the best car I've ever owned. With around 130,000 miles on it, it has never given me any real issues and has always been incredibly reliable.

I bought his car brand new and I've had it for about six years now. Although the glove box has rattled since day one and the dashboard cracked at about forty thousand miles, I must say that it's a very reliable car. It always starts up no matter how cold or hot it is, and it's inexpensive to fix. Plus, because of its price, I had a nicer car than most of my friends. I would definitely recommend this car to anyone looking for a reliable, inexpensive, and decent-looking car.

My car, which I acquired a year ago, has been a reliable companion until recently. Unfortunately, it began to overheat and I discovered that the coolant was disappearing. Despite my efforts to refill it, the problem persisted. I attempted to turn off the engine, but it continued to run, forcing me to disconnect the battery and tinker with the alternator. Eventually, I had to have it towed to a mechanic. After diagnosis, I learned that the coolant was leaking into the engine, resulting in a costly repair of $1000. Despite this setback, I remain confident in my ability to handle any future car troubles with ease.

Vehicle year: 1994
I purchased this car when it was only four years old, but unfortunately, I started experiencing some issues soon after. Initially, I had some trouble with the electrical system and had to replace the alternator. Later on, the car began to overheat, and I had to replace the thermostat. Unfortunately, the gears also started slipping, and I had to get the transmission rebuilt. Additionally, the compressor for the air conditioner stopped working, and the air was never cold to begin with. After that, I had some problems with the emissions control system and had to replace the E.G.R. valve. Unfortunately, the car was never the same after that, and it would stall if I didn't keep my foot on the gas pedal, which was quite dangerous.
