The Chevrolet Cavalier is a line of compact cars produced by Chevrolet. Serving as the replacement of the Chevrolet Monza, the Cavalier was the second Chevrolet model line to adopt front-wheel drive. Three versions of the Cavalier have been sold, including three generations sold in North America from model years 1982 to 2005, a version produced by SAIC-GM for China from 2016 to 2021, and a SAIC-GM version produced for Mexico since the 2019 model year.
The Cavalier was among the inaugural vehicles of the GM J platform. One of the first "world cars" of General Motors, the J platform was developed for use by each North American GM division (with the exception of GMC), alongside international models for Opel, Vauxhall, and Holden. Though sharing chassis underpinnings, J-body cars from Europe and Australia used slightly different body designs and different powertrains; in Europe, the Vauxhall Cavalier and Opel Ascona were marketed as mid-size cars. Initially a divisional counterpart of the Buick Skyhawk, Cadillac Cimarron, Oldsmobile Firenza, and Pontiac J2000, the Cavalier was primarily marketed alongside the Pontiac Sunbird (renamed the Pontiac Sunfire for 1995).
The 1982-2005 Cavalier was produced by multiple GM facilities across North America. For 2005, the Chevrolet Cobalt replaced the model line in North America.

I've purchased my third Cavalier in the last seven years and have spent almost nothing on maintenance. The first one was totaled in a head-on collision, but I walked away without a scratch. Now, my 15-year-old son is driving the second one, and I just bought a new 2004 LS Sedan. Compared to other compacts I looked at, the Cavalier has superior engine power, standard features, and price. I plan to keep this car until Chevy brings back the model name in 2016 or whenever they come to their senses. In my opinion, this car outperforms the daily-recalled Ford Focus by a long shot!

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my 1997 Convertible LS. I bought it brand new in May of 1998 and it has been an absolute joy to own. It has been incredibly reliable and I've only had to spend around $1000 on non-warranty related work. It's such a fun car to drive and I use it as my everyday vehicle. One of the things I love about it is that it can comfortably seat five passengers, which is quite rare for an American convertible. Additionally, the trunk is surprisingly spacious for a car of its size. In fact, my family and I have even taken it on vacation and had plenty of room for all of our luggage. Hey Original Owner, your car has been amazing! It has taken me all over the country and back without any mechanical problems. I have only needed to do routine brake and tire maintenance. Although the fuel economy isn't as good as it was 9 years ago, it is still better than most cars on the road. Also, I have to say that it is one of the sportiest cars for its price range!

Hi there! It's great to hear that you're interested in the Cavalier! I bought mine from the dealer with just under 60,000 miles and it's been a reliable car for everyday driving. I did have to replace the alternator once, which required a bit of force to re-attach the fan belt. Unfortunately, the coolant system gave way at around 85,000 miles and I had to spend over $1,000 to replace the head gasket due to a warped piston head from all the times the car overheated. Despite these issues, I still think it's a great first car for anyone who is young and learning. It handles great and has sufficient leg room. Thanks for considering the Cavalier!

I ordered this car in the late 90s. Although I encountered some issues with the hub bearing, starter, and heater core later on, the engine never leaked or burned any oil. I changed the oil every 3K with 0W-30 year-round. The motor ran strong up to 120,000 miles when I sold it to a friend. The last I heard, the car was still running, and the owner was impressed with its performance. Despite being driven hard at times, it just kept on going. If you can find one that has been well-maintained, I would say it is a good bet. It was the first new car I ever owned, so I felt that fluid changes were important. With high miles, the motor ran like new and didn't miss a beat. The original muffler and cat converter were replaced at 112K. Don't forget to check the oil change records!

Additionally, there have been four recalls during my ownership. Based on my experience, I would not recommend purchasing this car due to the high cost of repairs.

I purchased this car from a buy here-pay here lot with 160k miles for a great price. Although it has had a few minor issues, it has been reliable so far. When I first bought it, the instrument cluster would go haywire at random times, but this was later attributed to moisture in the electronics. The climate control has a slight clicking sound on any setting but recirculate, and the knobs broke off, but it's still functional. The shifter has a slight grind going into fourth gear, but it's not a major issue. The interior and body have some wear and tear, but it's still a solid driver. The best part is that it has been unwaveringly reliable for the past 6 months, and the only expense I've had has been for new tires.

I purchased this car back in 2006 when it had 60K miles on it. Although it required a lot of repairs, I found it to be a reliable vehicle. Unfortunately, over time, some issues arose such as the gauges not working in 2009, the windshield wipers not turning off since 2010, and the air conditioner making a constant ticking/clicking sound since shortly after I bought it. I had to replace the engine coils twice, the ignition control module six times, the water pump, fuel pump, clutch, and several other parts that I can't recall at the moment. Last week, I decided to trade it in for a new car as the timing belt was starting to go out. The interior of the car was basic, but it was a good starter car for a teenager, and the gas mileage was excellent.
