2001 Chevrolet Cavalier problems
The Chevrolet Cavalier is a line of compact cars produced by Chevrolet. Serving as the replacement of the Chevrolet Monza, the Cavalier was the second Chevrolet model line to adopt front-wheel drive. Three versions of the Cavalier have been sold, including three generations sold in North America from model years 1982 to 2005, a version produced by SAIC-GM for China from 2016 to 2021, and a SAIC-GM version produced for Mexico since the 2019 model year.
The Cavalier was among the inaugural vehicles of the GM J platform. One of the first "world cars" of General Motors, the J platform was developed for use by each North American GM division (with the exception of GMC), alongside international models for Opel, Vauxhall, and Holden. Though sharing chassis underpinnings, J-body cars from Europe and Australia used slightly different body designs and different powertrains; in Europe, the Vauxhall Cavalier and Opel Ascona were marketed as mid-size cars. Initially a divisional counterpart of the Buick Skyhawk, Cadillac Cimarron, Oldsmobile Firenza, and Pontiac J2000, the Cavalier was primarily marketed alongside the Pontiac Sunbird (renamed the Pontiac Sunfire for 1995).
The 1982-2005 Cavalier was produced by multiple GM facilities across North America. For 2005, the Chevrolet Cobalt replaced the model line in North America.

How many miles will a Cavalier last?
There are reports of 2003 Cavaliers topping 300,000 miles with the original powertrain and engine. One mechanic at Car Gurus even claims to have worked on an engine with 440,000 miles on it. But, as you can't vouch for the previous owner's maintenance habits, expect a lifespan of around 250,000 miles.
Does a 2001 Chevy Cavalier have a timing belt or chain?
ur cavi has both! timing chain is for ur camshaft connected to a sprocket on one piece and a pulley on the other, which the BELT drives. a camshaft opens and closes both intake/exhaust valves to keep the fuel and air combustion at the same ratio.
Why did Chevy stop making Cavaliers?
Contrary to the American markets, however, the cavalier remained on sale in other regions like Mexico for example. Stopping the Cavalier's production was a logical decision based on the declining sedan sales in the United States, a decision that left only the Malibu to represent the sedan segment in Chevrolet's lineup.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-06-09
- VIN: 1G1JC524X17
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: IGNITION SWITCH AND THE IGNITION LOCK CYLINDER MALFUNCTIONED IN 2009, ROUGHLY FIVE YEARS AFTER GM'S RECALL. THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF THE VEHICLE TOOK ADVANTAGE OF THE IGNITION SWITCH'S SERVICE. IN ADDITION TO THE RECALL, GM INSTALLED AN IGNITION WIRING HARNESS. BACK IN 2009, THE VEHICLE'S IGNITION WOULD OVERTURN, AND THEN, THE ENGINE WOULD AUTOMATICALLY SHUT-OFF. TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM, BOTH THE IGNITION SWITCH AND LOCK CYLINDER WERE REPLACED AT A COST OF $492. IN 2014, THE IGNITION SWITCH MALFUNCTIONS. THIS TIME, IT APPEARS THE IGNITION LOCK CYLINDER TO BE WORKING PROPERLY. THE IGNITION SWITCH BECAME DAMAGE DUE TO CURRENT FLOW TO THE IGNITION WHEN HOLDING THE KEY IN THE START POSITION. THE HEAT MELTED THE INTERNAL SWITCH. I HAD NOT KNOWN IN 2014 THAT THE PROBLEM WAS THE IGNITION SWITCH. IN THE SAME YEAR, HOWEVER, GM RECALLED A MASSIVE NUMBER OF VEHICLES FOR IGNITION SWITCH DEFECT. CHEVROLET CAVALIER WAS NOT ON THE LIST. TODAY, IT COSTS $180.00, EXCLUDING TAXES AND FEES, TO GET THE IGNITION SWITCH INSTALLED BY A CHEVROLET TECHNICIAN. A LOCKSMITH RATE STARTS AT $90 BUT DOES NOT INCLUDE SERVICE FEE, AND LABOR. BASED ON FEW ONLINE REPORTS, THE INSTALLATION TAKES A MINIMUM OF 20 MINUTES. WOULD INSTALLED THE IGNITION SWITCH MYSELF BUT CANNOT LOCATE STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS. ALL THE CHEVROLET MANUALS OWNED DO NOT PROVIDE INSTRUCTIONS ON REPLACING THE IGNITION SWITCH. IF I DO INSTALL THE IGNITION SWITCH, I AM UNSURE IF THE VEHICLE'S COMPUTER WILL NEED REPROGRAMMING. A FEW REPORTS MADE REFERENCE TO REPROGRAMMING THE VEHICLE'S COMPUTER FOLLOWING THE CHANGING OF THE IGNITION SWITCH. SOLUTION: I THINK GM NEEDS TO ADD CHEVROLET CAVALIER TO THE "RECALL" LIST. THE ALTERNATIVE, IGNITION WIRING HARNESS DOES NOT SUPPORT THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM ENTIRELY WHEN THE CHARGING SYSTEM LIGHT REMAINS ON THE DASHBOARD.

Hey there! I'm so excited to share my experience with this car! I bought it brand new with only 15 miles on it and have been driving it for the past four years. I drive around 20,000 miles a year, mostly on the freeway. I've had to repair my brakes twice, once at around 40,000 miles and the second time at around 80,000 miles. Other than tire rotations and oil changes, I haven't needed to do any other repairs. Unfortunately, I've been in two accidents while driving this car, but thankfully my front bumper took the damage both times. The other drivers were at fault and my bumper only suffered a small crack in the middle. Luckily, there was no interior damage in either accident. I must say, the bumpers on this car are really tough!

During a road trip to Tennessee, my car started leaking transmission fluid without my knowledge. I continued driving and stayed there for a week. On my way back, the transmission started malfunctioning and upon reaching home, I took the car to a mechanic. To my surprise, the mechanic informed me that my car was completely out of transmission fluid and should have never made it out of Tennessee. Despite this, I am grateful that my car got me home safely. It is a reliable car that requires proper maintenance and care. In fact, it got me home even when it shouldn't have made it out of the city of Gallatin TN.

Before buying, I read all the reviews on here and I agree that the suspension is a bit of a concern. Unfortunately, the day I got it, the coil springs snapped. However, I took care of that and since then, I have had no problems. The car is great on gas, getting 29/30 mpg. Mine has the 5-speed, so it moves a lot better than the auto. I currently have 96k miles on it, and the dash still looks great with no cracks. The only issue I have noticed is that all the pedals make a noise, but I'm sure a little WD40 will cure that. Overall, I'm really happy with it and would definitely recommend it to others.

I'm a big guy living in a remote part of Canada and I needed an affordable car that I could use in both winter and summer. It was also important to me to have access to a reliable dealer network in case I had any issues. After doing some research, I found that the Cavalier met all of my needs and was within my budget. Although there were other cars in this price range, I ultimately chose the Cavalier because it looked the best to me. I also liked the Sunfire, but unfortunately, it was out of my price range.

That's great value for your money!

I've been the proud owner of my '01 Cavalier for three years now. When I bought it, it had 65,000 miles on the clock, but now it has around 95,500 miles and it's still running like a dream! I haven't had any problems with it at all, and it's still on its original battery! I did have to replace the brakes at 70,000 miles, but even now, with 1/2 pads left, it's still going strong. The only downside is that the dashboard has developed quite a few cracks over time. There was one big crack in the center, which I covered with a stuffed animal, but now there are 6+ cracks on the dash. Apparently, Chevy says it's a common issue with this car. My previous car was a '97 Cavalier LS Sedan, which was also great until it hit 165,000 miles, and then everything started to go wrong. I'm hoping to get even more miles out of this one!

I purchased this car almost two years ago with 82K miles on it. Since then, I have put on about 30K miles. When I first bought it, the head gasket was broken, but I was able to get it fixed at the dealer. A few months later, the alternator broke, but it was an easy fix. I have had a few brake issues, but overall, I really enjoy driving this car. Recently, I was in a car accident, but thankfully, only the radiator, headlight, and hood were damaged. I am grateful that I have metal bumpers, which helped protect my car. I did have a fuel pump problem, but that only occurred when I ran out of gas completely. While it may sound like a lot, I was able to save money by getting parts from a junk yard.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with this car. I bought it new and have driven 86000 km with a mix of city and highway driving. I also frequently pull a utility trailer and a small boat trailer with no problems thanks to the reliable and smooth automatic transmission. While it may not be the flashiest or fastest car out there, it's definitely reliable transportation. I did have to replace the front wheel bearings - driver side last fall and passenger side this spring, but overall it's been a great car for me.

Hi there! Thank you for sharing your experience with us. Back in 2010, you purchased a used car with 104K miles for $1300, and it was in great shape with no mechanical issues. You took really good care of it, which is amazing! However, you mentioned that the dash is made of cheap plastic and it started cracking and falling apart. That can be frustrating, and you're thinking of just taking it off and buying one of those carpet covers that they sell to cover it. I totally understand how you feel, and it can be embarrassing to have friends see it. But, on the bright side, there are no mechanical issues with the car, which is great! Although it may be sluggish and won't burn rubber, it's still a reliable car. It may not be for those who have the need for speed, but if you drive slow, it's perfect. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us, and have a great day!
