1995 Chevrolet Cavalier problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Cavalier is a line of compact cars produced by Chevrolet. Serving as the replacement of the Chevrolet Monza, the Cavalier was the second Chevrolet model line to adopt front-wheel drive. Three versions of the Cavalier have been sold, including three generations sold in North America from model years 1982 to 2005, a version produced by SAIC-GM for China from 2016 to 2021, and a SAIC-GM version produced for Mexico since the 2019 model year.

The Cavalier was among the inaugural vehicles of the GM J platform. One of the first "world cars" of General Motors, the J platform was developed for use by each North American GM division (with the exception of GMC), alongside international models for Opel, Vauxhall, and Holden. Though sharing chassis underpinnings, J-body cars from Europe and Australia used slightly different body designs and different powertrains; in Europe, the Vauxhall Cavalier and Opel Ascona were marketed as mid-size cars. Initially a divisional counterpart of the Buick Skyhawk, Cadillac Cimarron, Oldsmobile Firenza, and Pontiac J2000, the Cavalier was primarily marketed alongside the Pontiac Sunbird (renamed the Pontiac Sunfire for 1995).

The 1982-2005 Cavalier was produced by multiple GM facilities across North America. For 2005, the Chevrolet Cobalt replaced the model line in North America.

Common 1995 Chevrolet Cavalier problems

The 1995 Chevrolet Cavalier is known for several common problems that owners have reported. One of the most frequently mentioned issues is related to the service engine light coming on after the car has been running for 20-30 minutes.

Another common problem with the 1995 Chevrolet Cavalier is related to the engine. Some owners have reported issues with the engine stalling, particularly when the car is stopped at a stop light.

The electrical system in the 1995 Chevrolet Cavalier is also known to cause problems for some owners. Some have reported issues with the turn signal switch failing, causing the signals not to work properly.

The interior of the 1995 Chevrolet Cavalier is also known to cause problems for some owners. Some have reported issues with the gauges going haywire, particularly in the 2004 and 2005 models.

Finally, some owners have reported issues with the fuel system in the 1995 Chevrolet Cavalier. Some have reported issues with the fuel pump failing, particularly in the 2003 model.

In summary, the 1995 Chevrolet Cavalier is known for several common problems, including issues with the service engine light, the engine, the electrical system, the interior, and the fuel system. These problems can range from relatively minor issues, such as the gauges going haywire, to more serious issues, such as the engine stalling or the fuel pump failing. How many miles will a Cavalier last?

There are reports of 2003 Cavaliers topping 300,000 miles with the original powertrain and engine. One mechanic at Car Gurus even claims to have worked on an engine with 440,000 miles on it. But, as you can't vouch for the previous owner's maintenance habits, expect a lifespan of around 250,000 miles.

Why did Chevy stop making Cavaliers?

Contrary to the American markets, however, the cavalier remained on sale in other regions like Mexico for example. Stopping the Cavalier's production was a logical decision based on the declining sedan sales in the United States, a decision that left only the Malibu to represent the sedan segment in Chevrolet's lineup.

What happened to Chevy Cavalier?

The station wagon was sold until 1994. The 1995-2005 Cavalier received a Poor rating in the IIHS' frontal off-set crash test. Meaning, head, neck and leg injury risk were extremely high. In 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier was replaced by the Cobalt in the United States and the Chevrolet Optra in Canada & Mexico.

What kind of engine does a Chevy Cavalier have?

The chassis was revised for 2003. All Cavaliers are powered by GM's newly developed Ecotec 2.2-liter engine, which offers responsive performance, excellent fuel economy, and low emissions. Chevrolet Cavalier is designed to offer a compelling value.

Negative 1995 Chevrolet Cavalier car reviews

  1. Hailey Moen 2024-11-03

Hi there! My Cavalier and I have been through a lot together. From my kids becoming teenagers to three 1500 mile trips out of state, one marriage, some repairs, and my twenty-somethings, we've been through it all. Despite costing me some money at times, she's never cost me more than $500.00. The transmission still runs, although the brakes need fixing every now and then. She's started up every morning for years (except for those repair times), and the best part is that my baby has 184,000 miles and is still running! In early 2004, I'll retire her, but not to get rid of her. In two years, my son will be old enough to drive... and guess what he'll be driving! Thanks for reading.

Although my Cavalier served me well for a few years, it began to experience significant issues around the three-year mark. Currently, the most pressing problem is a severe head gasket leak, which unfortunately comes with a high repair cost. It seems that the end of the road for my Cavalier is at the 100,000-mile mark. Thank you for your attention. LS

This car experienced multiple head gasket failures, with the first two occurring under warranty. Despite this, the issue persisted and I was forced to pay for subsequent repairs, which were costly. It is disappointing that Chevy did not take responsibility for this recurring problem, especially considering that I was not the only one affected. Unfortunately, the car now requires yet another set of head gaskets, which is unacceptable. As a result, I have decided to switch to a Honda Civic for my next vehicle purchase.

It's unfortunate to hear that you've been experiencing issues with your vehicle, particularly with the engine and drivetrain. These mechanical defects, including the head gasket, can be quite frustrating. We understand how important it is to have a reliable car, and we're here to help you get back on the road as soon as possible.

I will not purchase the car again.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it new and have driven it for 158,000 miles! I really like the way it looks, both inside and out. Of course, with any car, there have been some maintenance issues. We've had to replace the head gasket twice, the gas tank and lines, and have had many brake jobs. Unfortunately, it's also had some rust problems around the doors and hood. Despite all of this, it has always started (even in the coldest weather) and has never left me stranded. However, it's getting towards the end of its useful life and I'll be replacing it soon. I'm not sure if I'll buy another Cavalier though, as upkeep has been expensive. Thanks for listening to my story!

I love my 95 Cavalier, which also happens to be my first car. One of the reasons why I highly recommend this car is because my father has a 1991 Cavalier with the same motor as mine, but a different body style. He has driven it for over 200,000 miles and it still runs like a charm! Additionally, I know someone who was in an accident with a Cavalier, and even though the car rolled three times, she walked away unscathed. It's truly an amazing car, isn't it?

This vehicle is very dependable and I love it. It's also great on fuel. I've had this vehicle for over 4 years now and the only issues I've had were a timing belt problem and a coolant problem. If you maintain it, it will keep you happy.

It's great fun to drive! Although it may not be the most reliable car out there. It can be a bit cramped with many people in the car, but it's perfect for just me. I do wish it had more horsepower, but overall it's a perfect first car. I absolutely love it!

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share with you my experience with my '95 Cavalier. I purchased it back in September of 1998 and it's still running like a dream today! The car has a sleek and curvy style that I absolutely love. Inside, there are so many fun features to enjoy, like the sunroof, CD player, comfortable seats, and great stereo system. The engine is incredibly reliable and I estimate that I get about 29 MPG on it. So far, I haven't had to fix anything major, just regular maintenance.
