1991 Chevrolet Cavalier problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Cavalier is a line of compact cars produced by Chevrolet. Serving as the replacement of the Chevrolet Monza, the Cavalier was the second Chevrolet model line to adopt front-wheel drive. Three versions of the Cavalier have been sold, including three generations sold in North America from model years 1982 to 2005, a version produced by SAIC-GM for China from 2016 to 2021, and a SAIC-GM version produced for Mexico since the 2019 model year.

The Cavalier was among the inaugural vehicles of the GM J platform. One of the first "world cars" of General Motors, the J platform was developed for use by each North American GM division (with the exception of GMC), alongside international models for Opel, Vauxhall, and Holden. Though sharing chassis underpinnings, J-body cars from Europe and Australia used slightly different body designs and different powertrains; in Europe, the Vauxhall Cavalier and Opel Ascona were marketed as mid-size cars. Initially a divisional counterpart of the Buick Skyhawk, Cadillac Cimarron, Oldsmobile Firenza, and Pontiac J2000, the Cavalier was primarily marketed alongside the Pontiac Sunbird (renamed the Pontiac Sunfire for 1995).

The 1982-2005 Cavalier was produced by multiple GM facilities across North America. For 2005, the Chevrolet Cobalt replaced the model line in North America.

Common 1991 Chevrolet Cavalier problems

Common Problems with the Chevrolet Cavalier 1991

  1. Engine Misfire and Fuel Pump Issues

Many Chevrolet Cavalier owners have reported engine misfiring issues, which can be caused by a variety of factors, including faulty spark plugs, ignition coils, or fuel pump problems.

  1. Power Window Motors Failure

Power window motors may fail due to overheating, causing the windows to stop working altogether. This issue is particularly common in hotter climates, where the dashboard and window motors are exposed to higher temperatures for extended periods.

  1. Check Engine Light and Electrical Problems

The check engine light is a common issue in Chevrolet Cavaliers, often caused by faulty oxygen sensors, loose gas caps, or other electrical problems.

  1. Transmission Problems

Transmission problems are a common issue in Chevrolet Cavaliers, often occurring around the 90,000-mile mark. These problems can range from minor repairs to major rebuilds or complete replacements, with an average cost of over $3,000 for repairs.

  1. Steering Problems

Power steering problems are a common issue in Chevrolet Cavaliers, with many owners reporting that the power steering goes out suddenly. The only way to fix this issue is to replace the steering system, which can cost an average of $910.

  1. Instrument Panel Problems

Instrument panel problems are a common issue in Chevrolet Cavaliers, with many owners reporting that the instrument cluster fails at around the 64,000-mile mark. The main way to fix this issue is to replace the instrument panel, which can cost around $440.

  1. Dashboard Cracking Problems

The dashboard on the Chevrolet Tahoe is a notable weak point, with hotter climates causing it to become cracked in places. Repairing it can cost around $200.

  1. Oil Consumption Problems

Many Tahoe owners have complained about excessive oil consumption from their vehicles, with the issue often requiring engine replacement at around the 96,000-mile mark. The cost to fix this issue can be as high as $5500.

  1. Air-Conditioning Problems

The air-conditioning system on many Chevys is known to be quite fragile, with the cause often being a broken condenser or a failed air-con compressor. The average cost of repair is $1,110.

  1. Engine Running Rough

Many owners have reported issues with their 5.3-liter Vortec V8 engine running rough, with any engine teardown and rebuild costing thousands of dollars. However, buying a Haynes manual and doing the job yourself can save hundreds of dollars in the process.

In summary, the Chevrolet Cavalier 1991 has several common problems, including engine misfires, power window motor failures, check engine light and electrical issues, transmission problems, steering problems, instrument panel problems, dashboard cracking problems, oil consumption problems, air-conditioning problems, and engine running rough. While some of these issues can be resolved with relatively minor repairs, others can be quite costly, with engine and transmission problems often requiring significant repairs or replacements.

Why did Chevy stop making Cavaliers?

Contrary to the American markets, however, the cavalier remained on sale in other regions like Mexico for example. Stopping the Cavalier's production was a logical decision based on the declining sedan sales in the United States, a decision that left only the Malibu to represent the sedan segment in Chevrolet's lineup.

How long can a Chevy Cavalier last?

There are reports of 2003 Cavaliers topping 300,000 miles with the original powertrain and engine. One mechanic at Car Gurus even claims to have worked on an engine with 440,000 miles on it. But, as you can't vouch for the previous owner's maintenance habits, expect a lifespan of around 250,000 miles.

What happened to Chevy Cavalier?

The station wagon was sold until 1994. The 1995-2005 Cavalier received a Poor rating in the IIHS' frontal off-set crash test. Meaning, head, neck and leg injury risk were extremely high. In 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier was replaced by the Cobalt in the United States and the Chevrolet Optra in Canada & Mexico.

What kind of engine does a Chevy Cavalier have?

The chassis was revised for 2003. All Cavaliers are powered by GM's newly developed Ecotec 2.2-liter engine, which offers responsive performance, excellent fuel economy, and low emissions. Chevrolet Cavalier is designed to offer a compelling value.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2003-09-15
  • VIN: 3G1JC51G3MS
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: THE FIRST PROBLEM I HAVE ENCOUNTERED IS THE POOR BODY OF THE CAR. THE PANELS BELOW THE CAR HAVE COMPLETELY DIMINISHED. ANYTHING REMAINING OF THEM IS EITHER ROTTING AND RUSTING AWAY, OR HAS PAINT REMOVED FROM THEM. THE PAINT IS ALSO COMING OUT OF THE FRONT PLASTIC BUMPER AND FROM THE FRONT HOOD OF THE CAR. SOME RUST IS ALSO APPEARING AT THE SIDES. WHEN I STEP INTO THE HIGHWAY AT THE SPEED OF A MINIMUM 100 KM/H, THIS TRASH IS ANYTHING BUT QUIET. APART FROM THE ENGINE, WHICH IS NOW BROKEN, THE GASKETS OR WHATEVER KEEPS THE AIR OUT DOESN'T KEEP IT OUT. INSTEAD, SOME AIR COMES IN AND THUS MAKING THAT NOISE; LIKE HAVING YOUR WINDOWS OPEN AND GETTING ALL THAT NOISE OF THE AIR. IT'S NO DIFFERENT WHEN CLOSED. THE RUBBER SEAL OF THE DOORS IS EXTREMELY POOR IN THIS REGARD. MY SECOND PROBLEM HAS BEEN THE ENGINE. MY ENGINE'S MOTOR IS BROKEN DOWN. NO MECHANIC CAN FIX IT. I TRIED TO GO THROUGH CHEVROLET AND ONE OF THEIR LOCAL DEALERSHIPS. BUT JUST THE COST OF REFURBISHING MY ENGINE WOULD APROXIMATILY ADD UP TO $2,500 (MIGHT AS WELL BUY A NEW CAR INSTEAD!).

  • Summary: AN '88 BLUE DODGE VAN (VIN 2B6GB113Y3JK56747)CRASHED INTO MY LITTLE GIRLS CAR THE 1991 CAVALIER. EXPERT RECONSTRUCTIONIST (TX DEPT. OF PUBLIC SAFETY) BLAME MY LITTLE GIRL FOR HAVING RAN THE STOP SIGN AND HITTING THE VAN, CAUSING AN INDIRECT DEATH OF THREE AND THE DIRECT DEATH WAS AN ABANDON UTILITY POLE. I DO NOT BELIEVE THAT IF THE CAR WAS TO HIT THE VAN IT WOULD HAVE CAUSED SO MUCH DAMAGE. MY DAUGHTER STATES THAT SHE CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP AND PROCEEDED ENTERING THE INTERSECTION AT 6 MPH. HOW CAN A SMALL CAR DO SO MUCH DAMAGE EVEN IF IT WAS TO HAVE RUNNED THE STOP SIGN. I BELIEVE THAT THE VAN HIT THE CAR CAUSING THE ROOF OF THE CAVALIER TO COLLAPSE AND DOING IRREPAIRABLE DAMAGE TO MY LITTLE GIRLS FRIEND. MY LITTLE GIRL HAD MULTIPLE CONTURSIONS TO THE HEAD WHEN THE ROOF CAVED IN AND HER ANKLE HAD THREE FRACTURES ON HER LEFT ANKLE. THERE WAS EVIDENCE IN THE DRIVER SIDE THAT THE BOTTOM SIDE OF THE DOOR WAS PINGED INWARD AND THE ROOF OVER HER HEAD WAS CAVED IN. LUCKILY THE TWO GIRLS SURVIVED. EVEN THOUGH ONE IS A VEGETABLE MY LITTLE GIRL IS NOT THE SAME AND HER YOUTH HAS BEEN STOLEN BY THIS ACCIDENT. SHE HAS RECURRING NIGHTMARES AND A BRAIN CONTUSSION THAT MIGHT NOT GO AWAY UNTIL ALL THE PRESSURE HAS BEEN RELIEVED AND THAT IS GOING TO TAKE TIME. WHY DID THE ROOF COLLAPSE INJURING BOTH OCCUPANTS WHO WERE WEARING SEATBELTS? WHY DID THEY HAVE TO USE THE JAWS-OF-LIFE TO RESCUE BOTH GIRLS? *AK

Negative 1991 Chevrolet Cavalier car reviews

  1. Mackenzie Jaskolski 2024-10-19

Hey there! Just a heads up, the side skirts of this car may look a bit worn, but with some care, it can still be a great ride. Just keep in mind that down the road, you may need to do some refurbishing on the wheel wells, door jams, and door panels. But don't worry, it's nothing that can't be fixed!

  2. Jeramy Kreiger 2024-08-21

It's great for a first-time car buyer. If you treat it right, it is a low-maintenance, repair-it-yourself vehicle. Mine's pushing 300,000km and still purrs like a kitten. I highly recommend using synthetic oil. I only burn half a liter every 10,000kms between oil changes.

  3. Lavern Swaniawski 2024-04-16

I bought my car from a kind-hearted elderly gentleman who convinced me that the Chevrolet Cavalier was the perfect car for me. Unfortunately, my experience with the car has not been great as it has been breaking down frequently and costing me a lot of money. While I do not recommend buying a car solely based on the seller's friendliness, I would advise doing thorough research before making a purchase. It's important to find a car that suits your needs and budget.

  4. Terrill Renner 2024-02-28

The car has required over $1000 in recent repairs, including a replacement head gasket which unfortunately still leaks. It also needs a new muffler and the transmission is starting to act up, shifting slowly and accelerating poorly. Despite these issues, the car does offer a spacious area behind the front seats. The front bumper is sagging and there is a humorous bumper sticker in the rear window that reads 'HONK IF ANYTHING FALLS OFF!'.

  5. Nicolas Berge 2024-01-22

I've owned 17 cars since getting my license in '88, but none of them compare to this super trooper! The 6-cylinder engine in this wagon is fantastic. It's got an impressive 325,000 kms on it - amazing! Forget about Camrys and Accords, this car just won't quit. I haven't been the most diligent with oil changes and tune-ups, but I've still driven it twice to Vancouver from Calgary, and once to Toronto and back! Sure, the paint is faded and there's a bit of rust around the wheel wells, but I'm proud to say that this old dog is still kicking. The only major repairs I've had to do are brakes, tires, and the right side ball joint. If this car makes it to 375,000 kms, I'm going to write a letter to GM. Great job, boys!

Positive 1991 Chevrolet Cavalier car reviews

  1. Stanford Beer 2024-11-02

Your car has an impressive 250,000km on it, but it still runs like new! Although there is a little bit of water under the hood and some body rust, which is common in Ontario winters, you've had no major problems. That's great to hear!

  2. Cristopher Keebler 2024-10-15

It looks like the car has a few dents on the passenger hood from when a deer ran out in front of me. Unfortunately, it's not fixable unless I get another hood and fender. So, it's really not worth it. The money that I would spend to fix it, I might as well use to buy another car. Other than those dents, it's a good car.

  3. Finn Schuster 2024-09-21

What a great find! I came across this amazing little car for my father when he was commuting 600-700 miles a week, and it cost us less than $1000 from our local GM dealer. The only work it needed was a new battery and a new starter (although replacing just the solenoid probably would have fixed it as well). I absolutely love the styling on it, and the comfortable seats make it a joy to ride in. It also gets great gas mileage, around 25 mpg in town and over 30 mpg on the highway. This car has been as dependable as any car I've ever had (although my old Datsun 210 wagon was pretty good too), and it has terrific ground clearance, which is a big help for getting through the snow where I live. I would highly recommend this solid machine to anyone in need of good, cheap transportation!

  4. Waldo Hoppe 2024-09-14

Your car sounds amazing! It's impressive that you've managed to keep it running so well with all those miles. I'm glad to hear that it doesn't leak any oil and that you've kept up with basic maintenance. The new chrome rims and tires must have really made it look sharp. It's too bad about the A/C compressor, but I'm sure it will be running like new again soon. And a new paint job will really make it shine! It's clear that your car is the Heartbeat of America!

  5. Wendell Flatley 2024-08-29

I was interested in a house and noticed a car in the garage, a 1990 Cavalier. The car had been sitting there for 8 years and was covered in a thick layer of dust. I asked about the car and the owner told me that his mother had bought it new, but she got sick 8 years ago and never drove it again. The car had only 68980 miles on it, and he was selling it for $1500. Unfortunately, I didn't have enough money on me, so I had to pass on the offer. However, the owner's wife was very friendly and asked me why I didn't buy the car. When I told her I didn't have enough money, she asked how much I had. I replied that I only had $500, and she said that I could have the car for that amount. I was thrilled and took the car home. After flushing the lines and changing the oil, I have been driving it for 6 years now and I absolutely love it!
