2005 Chevrolet Cavalier problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Cavalier is a line of compact cars produced by Chevrolet. Serving as the replacement of the Chevrolet Monza, the Cavalier was the second Chevrolet model line to adopt front-wheel drive. Three versions of the Cavalier have been sold, including three generations sold in North America from model years 1982 to 2005, a version produced by SAIC-GM for China from 2016 to 2021, and a SAIC-GM version produced for Mexico since the 2019 model year.

The Cavalier was among the inaugural vehicles of the GM J platform. One of the first "world cars" of General Motors, the J platform was developed for use by each North American GM division (with the exception of GMC), alongside international models for Opel, Vauxhall, and Holden. Though sharing chassis underpinnings, J-body cars from Europe and Australia used slightly different body designs and different powertrains; in Europe, the Vauxhall Cavalier and Opel Ascona were marketed as mid-size cars. Initially a divisional counterpart of the Buick Skyhawk, Cadillac Cimarron, Oldsmobile Firenza, and Pontiac J2000, the Cavalier was primarily marketed alongside the Pontiac Sunbird (renamed the Pontiac Sunfire for 1995).

The 1982-2005 Cavalier was produced by multiple GM facilities across North America. For 2005, the Chevrolet Cobalt replaced the model line in North America.

Common 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier, several common problems have been reported:

  • Speedometer Stopped Working: Another common problem is the speedometer stopping working in the 2004 Cavalier, with 41 complaints. A malfunctioning speedometer can pose safety risks by making it difficult for the driver to maintain appropriate speeds while driving.
  • Fuel Pump Failure: The 2003 Cavalier has been reported to experience fuel pump failure, with 35 complaints. A failing fuel pump can lead to issues with fuel delivery to the engine, causing stalling or difficulty starting the vehicle.
  • Window Motor Failure: Owners have also reported window motor failure in the 2004 Cavalier, with 32 complaints. This problem can result in windows getting stuck in open or closed positions, impacting ventilation and overall convenience for the driver and passengers.

These issues highlight some of the key mechanical and electrical problems that owners of the 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier have faced. Addressing these issues promptly through proper diagnosis and repairs is crucial to maintaining the safety and reliability of the vehicle.

How many miles will a Cavalier last?

There are reports of 2003 Cavaliers topping 300,000 miles with the original powertrain and engine. One mechanic at Car Gurus even claims to have worked on an engine with 440,000 miles on it. But, as you can't vouch for the previous owner's maintenance habits, expect a lifespan of around 250,000 miles.

Why did Chevy stop making Cavaliers?

Contrary to the American markets, however, the cavalier remained on sale in other regions like Mexico for example. Stopping the Cavalier's production was a logical decision based on the declining sedan sales in the United States, a decision that left only the Malibu to represent the sedan segment in Chevrolet's lineup.

What happened to Chevy Cavalier?

The station wagon was sold until 1994. The 1995-2005 Cavalier received a Poor rating in the IIHS' frontal off-set crash test. Meaning, head, neck and leg injury risk were extremely high. In 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier was replaced by the Cobalt in the United States and the Chevrolet Optra in Canada & Mexico.

What engine is in a 2005 Chevy Cavalier?

2.2 L 4-cylinder2005 Chevrolet Cavalier / Engine

A 140-horsepower, 2.2-liter four-cylinder Ecotec engine is standard in all models. Both the two- and four-door versions have a 104.1-inch wheelbase and measure 182.7 inches long overall.

What are the different models of the 2005 Cavalier?

Three trim levels are available, base, LS, LS Sport. As mentioned, all are powered by the Ecotec 2.2-liter four-cylinder engine. A five-speed manual transmission is standard on all models.

Why is my Cavalier not starting?

The most common reasons a Chevrolet Cavalier won't start are a dead battery, an alternator problem, or failed starter.

Negative 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier car reviews

  1. Hans Koch 2024-11-01

My car has been a reliable vehicle for a long time, but recently it has experienced some issues. Despite being well-maintained by my mechanic father, it has developed a few problems such as a squeaking sound in the front end, which turned out to be the shocks, and grinding rotors. Additionally, the transmission is slipping at second gear. While these issues are frustrating, I am confident that they can be resolved. I have a great deal of affection for this car, as it was my first new car and a graduation gift from my parents.

  2. Marshall D'Amore 2024-08-08

It can be difficult to handle your vehicle on the highway when there's a lot of wind or when you're behind 18-wheelers.

  3. Rosario Friesen 2024-07-11

I purchased a 2005 Chevy Cavalier sedan in the fall of 2005. Unfortunately, I have experienced some issues with the car over the years. For example, the driver's seat handle broke off and the seat would flop back while driving. Chevy's customer service suggested replacing the whole seat, but I found a more affordable solution. Additionally, the catalytic converter and ion sensor needed to be replaced, but thankfully they were still under warranty. The seats are not the most comfortable and you can feel anyone's foot movement near the seat. The dash also tends to rattle and the glove compartment handle broke. The driver's visor also tends to flop down, and I had to replace the driver's power window motor and switch this year. Unfortunately, the car is currently not starting and I am unsure of what the issue is. Despite these challenges, I have enjoyed my time with the car and appreciate the memories it has helped me create.

  4. Cory Yost 2024-05-14

Only had it a few days, but I already really like it! It looks good, feels comfortable, and runs great so far. I'm hopeful that it will be a good car for a while.

  5. Jasper Okuneva 2024-05-08

Although I purchased this vehicle with only 11,000 miles on it and had it for about 3 years, I experienced several issues with it. Unfortunately, the internal components were not up to par and I had to deal with a variety of electrical and mechanical problems. For example, the interior lights malfunctioned, the seat broke and I had to hold it up with an old milk can, and the seat belt strap holder attached to the neck of the headrest broke like a cheap piece of plastic. Additionally, I had a blinker issue where one blinker worked and the other did not, and the timing chain snapped and ruined the engine valves before GM recommended a tune up or check. Overall, the reliability of this vehicle was quite poor. However, it may be a suitable option for a teenager who is looking for a car to drive around and not worry too much about.

Positive 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier car reviews

  1. Jessie Morissette 2024-11-13

This car may not be the most luxurious, but it offers great value with its good fuel economy, air conditioning, CD player, power steering and brakes, and cruise control all at an affordable price. As someone who drives around 30,000 miles a year, I plan to keep it for 3-4 years. Don't worry about minor scratches or dings, as the resale value may not be high, but that's not a concern when you didn't have to break the bank to purchase it. When the time comes, you can easily trade it in for something else. Plus, it's a reliable, economical, and safe mode of transportation.

  2. Brayan Lowe 2024-10-18

As my first car, I was given this sporty-looking vehicle. Despite its outdated interior, it is a great starter car that gets excellent gas mileage. Although it is quite small, it has only 30,000 miles on it. However, there have been some issues with it stalling and not starting at times.

  3. Geovanni Rohan 2024-10-17

Great for the money! I'm glad to hear that you haven't had any problems with it. Plus, the great MPG is a huge bonus!

  4. Nicolas Halvorson 2024-10-13

I was thrilled to get my Cavalier, I thought it was adorable and compact. During the test drive, I was impressed by how smoothly it drove and how comfortable it was. Unfortunately, after only 8 months of ownership, I have had to spend a lot of money on repairs. The check engine light has come on multiple times in the past month, and my car has already been in the shop twice this month, despite my diligent maintenance. Despite these issues, the Cavalier still drives nicely and accelerates quickly!

  5. Norwood Collier 2024-08-25

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your vehicle! It sounds like it's been really helpful for you in Missouri's snowy conditions. Plus, the gas mileage is a great bonus. It's wonderful to hear that the car drives smoothly and that the seats are comfortable too.
