1996 Chevrolet Cavalier problems
The Chevrolet Cavalier is a line of compact cars produced by Chevrolet. Serving as the replacement of the Chevrolet Monza, the Cavalier was the second Chevrolet model line to adopt front-wheel drive. Three versions of the Cavalier have been sold, including three generations sold in North America from model years 1982 to 2005, a version produced by SAIC-GM for China from 2016 to 2021, and a SAIC-GM version produced for Mexico since the 2019 model year.
The Cavalier was among the inaugural vehicles of the GM J platform. One of the first "world cars" of General Motors, the J platform was developed for use by each North American GM division (with the exception of GMC), alongside international models for Opel, Vauxhall, and Holden. Though sharing chassis underpinnings, J-body cars from Europe and Australia used slightly different body designs and different powertrains; in Europe, the Vauxhall Cavalier and Opel Ascona were marketed as mid-size cars. Initially a divisional counterpart of the Buick Skyhawk, Cadillac Cimarron, Oldsmobile Firenza, and Pontiac J2000, the Cavalier was primarily marketed alongside the Pontiac Sunbird (renamed the Pontiac Sunfire for 1995).
The 1982-2005 Cavalier was produced by multiple GM facilities across North America. For 2005, the Chevrolet Cobalt replaced the model line in North America.

Common 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier, here are some common problems associated with this car:
- Rear Suspension Trailing Arm Bolt Fatigue: A recall highlighted a problem where one of the rear suspension trailing arm bolts could fatigue and break, affecting the vehicle's suspension system.
- Airbag Deployment in Low-Speed Crashes: Some complaints mentioned inadvertent airbag deployment in low-speed crashes or when an object struck the floor pan due to calibrations in the airbag's sensing and diagnostic module.
- Ignition Switch Issues: Complaints included issues with the ignition switch, where prolonged key holding in the "start" position could lead to high current flow, causing heat that melted internal switch parts. A remedy involved installing a relay kit to prevent this issue.
- Starting Problems: Various starting issues were reported by owners, such as ignition coil problems, anti-theft system malfunctions, fuel pump issues, and wiring problems, leading to difficulties in starting the vehicle.
- ABS Light and Brake System Concerns: Complaints included ABS light issues, brake system failures, and concerns related to the hydraulic power assist system, indicating potential safety risks and malfunctions in the braking system.
- Electrical System Malfunctions: Owners reported problems with the electrical system, including issues with the radio, horn, and automatic transmission, indicating potential wiring or component failures.
These common problems with the 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier highlight a range of issues from engine-related concerns to safety system malfunctions and electrical failures. Addressing these issues promptly through proper maintenance and necessary repairs is crucial to ensure the safety and reliability of the vehicle.
How many miles will a Cavalier last?
There are reports of 2003 Cavaliers topping 300,000 miles with the original powertrain and engine. One mechanic at Car Gurus even claims to have worked on an engine with 440,000 miles on it. But, as you can't vouch for the previous owner's maintenance habits, expect a lifespan of around 250,000 miles.
Why did Chevy stop making Cavaliers?
Contrary to the American markets, however, the cavalier remained on sale in other regions like Mexico for example. Stopping the Cavalier's production was a logical decision based on the declining sedan sales in the United States, a decision that left only the Malibu to represent the sedan segment in Chevrolet's lineup.
What happened to Chevy Cavalier?
The station wagon was sold until 1994. The 1995-2005 Cavalier received a Poor rating in the IIHS' frontal off-set crash test. Meaning, head, neck and leg injury risk were extremely high. In 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier was replaced by the Cobalt in the United States and the Chevrolet Optra in Canada & Mexico.
What kind of engine does a Chevy Cavalier have?
The chassis was revised for 2003. All Cavaliers are powered by GM's newly developed Ecotec 2.2-liter engine, which offers responsive performance, excellent fuel economy, and low emissions. Chevrolet Cavalier is designed to offer a compelling value.
Is the 1996 Chevy Cavalier a good car?
It's comfortable, the styling holds up and it's been a lot more reliable than I expected from a cheap Chevy. We only put about 5K a year on it, but it has been on a few long road trips.

I TOOK THE CAR BACK FOR REPAIRS NUMEROUS TIMES TO THE DEALER AND THE SELLER AND TO VARIOUS CAR REPAIR PLACES. BUT, NO ONE WAS ABLE TO FIND THE PROBLEM AND REPAIR IT. A FEW YEARS AGO - I TOOK MY CAR FOR REPAIRS TO ANOTHER CHEVORLET DEALER AND THEY TOLD ME THAT IT WAS THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER. AND THAT IT WOULD BE CHEAPER TO HAVE IT REPLACED TBY SOMEONE OTHER THAN A DEALER. SO, I TOOK MY CAR MUFFLER REPAIR AND HAD IT REPLACED (AT A VERY EXPENSIVE COST). THE LIGHTS DID NOT GO OFF AFTER THE REPAIR. I WAS TOLD THEY HAD TO BE RE SET WHICH THEY COULD NOT DO. SO, I TOOK IT TO A CAR REPAIR PLACE AND HAD THE LIGHTS RESET. IT SEEMED TO FIX THE PROBLEM. NOW, A YEAR OR SO HAS GONE BY AND THE LIGHTS CAME BACK ON. A FEW MONTHS LATER THE CAR STARTED TO LOSE POWER AGAIN AND I TOOK IT BACK TO THE MUFFLER SHOP - THEY COULD FIND NO PROBLEM . AGAIN I TOOK IT TO A REPAIR PLACE AND HAD THE LIGHTS RESET. AT THIS TIME THE LIGHTS HAVE REMAIN OFF, BUT THE CAR STILL LOSES POWER OFF AND ON. *TR

- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: STEERING:RACK AND PINION
- Summary: CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES AND MINI VANS HAVE LOWER PINION BEARINGS IN THE POWER RACK AND PINION ASSEMBLY IN WHICH THE RETAINER TABS WERE NOT CRIMPED PROPERLY. THESE AND SOME OTHER RETAINERS USED IN VEHICLES ASSEMBLED BETWEEN JANUARY 1, 1996 AND OCTOBER 31, 1997, COULD FAIL AND PERMIT THE BALL BEARINGS TO ESCAPE.
- Consequence: IF THIS OCCURS, THE PINION SHAFT CAN BE FORCED UPWARD DURING LEFT TURNS AND BACK DOWN AS THE STEERING WHEEL IS MOVED BACK AND TO THE RIGHT. IF THE PINION SHAFT MOVES FURTHER, THE DRIVER WILL NEED TO EXERT MORE EFFORT TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL, SIMILAR TO A VEHICLE WITHOUT POWER ASSISTED STEERING. IF THE PINION SHAFT MOVES EVEN FURTHER, THE DRIVER WILL REQUIRE MUCH HIGHER EFFORT TO TURN LEFT AND MAY NOT BE ABLE TO TURN THE WHEEL AS MUCH AS INTENDED. WITH THE MAXIMUM PINION SHAFT MOVEMENT, WHICH REQUIRES INTERNAL GEAR COMPONENT DAMAGE, THE DRIVER CAN ENCOUNTER HIGH RESISTANCE TO TURNING LEFT, FOLLOWED BY UNINTENDED POWER ASSIST TO THE RIGHT. IN ANY OF THESE CONDITIONS, A CRASH COULD OCCUR.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A NEW LOWER PINION BEARING UNLESS INSPECT OF THE EXISTING BEARING INDICATES THAT REPLACEMENT OF THE GEAR ASSEMBLY IS NECESSARY. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN JANUARY 24, 2003. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-222-1020, PONTIAC AT 1-800-762-2737, OR OLDSMOBILE AT 1-800-442-6537.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH
- Summary: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES. IF THE ENGINE FAILS TO START AND THE DRIVER HOLDS THE KEY IN THE "START" POSITION FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD, HIGH CURRENT FLOWS THROUGH THE IGNITION SWITCH, AND SOMETIMES PRODUCES ENOUGH HEAT TO MELT INTERNAL SWITCH PARTS.
- Consequence: IF THE SWITCH IS DAMAGED, A FIRE COULD OCCUR IN THE STEERING COLUMN, EVEN WITH THE ENGINE OFF AND THE KEY REMOVED.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A RELAY KIT IN THESE VEHICLES TO PREVENT HIGH CURRENT FROM FLOWING THROUGH THE IGNITION SWITCH. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN MARCH 27, 2002. Bought the car brand new with only 15 miles on it and after driving it for 114,856 miles, it still purrs like a kitten. I haven't had any trouble with it, just normal wear and tear. I absolutely love my car and would highly recommend it to anyone!

I haven't had any costly repairs to talk about.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it with 53000 miles on it and three years later it had 118000 miles and was still going strong (unfortunately, someone crashed into me and it got totaled). It was an extremely dependable car and the only issues I had with it were normal things like an alternator, brakes, battery, and a map sensor. It got great mileage (30mpg hwy) and was peppy for a compact.

This has been your favorite vehicle. You love Chevys and you love this car. It handles very well and goes through the snow almost as well as your husband's 4-wheel drive Blazer.

Great car when it runs. The Quad 4 was a downfall for GM, as were the fuel pumps.

Hey there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my cavalier. I bought it back in 2001 with 110k miles on it and now it has 140k miles. Overall, I've been pretty happy with it. I just wanted to give you a heads up that the water pump tends to go on these cars between 105k and 115k miles, so keep an eye out for that. The backseat is a bit small and can be tricky to get things in and out of. Unfortunately, I had to replace the transmission at around 130k miles, which was a bit of a pain. Despite the mileage, it still has some pickup, but the 4-speed automatics are a bit punchier. On the bright side, the paint job has held up really well and it still looks fairly new. All in all, it's a nice little flashy and pretty dependable car. If you're in the market for a new car, I'd definitely recommend checking out a newer cavalier.

I've owned three Chevy's so far, and this one was no exception to the great experience. I purchased it from a high school student, and even after some wear and tear, it still drove beautifully. The gas mileage was impressive, around 30MPG, and it was a fun car to drive. Although there were some minor maintenance issues, such as brakes and a new battery, these are to be expected with any car. The seats were not the most comfortable, and the back seats were not accommodating for anyone. I did experience some problems with sticky buttons and dials, but I believe this was due to the previous owner. The truck space was good, and I would highly recommend this car to anyone looking for an affordable, reliable, fuel-efficient, and peppy car!

Despite the initial issues I faced with my car, I have been able to appreciate its excellent gas mileage, which is a great benefit for my daily commute to school. However, I had to take it back to the dealer three times to repair the overheating issue, which has been a major inconvenience. Additionally, the car lacks power. Nonetheless, I am confident that with the right repairs and maintenance, this car will be a reliable and efficient mode of transportation.

I have gotten used to V-6, automatic engines, but for a 4 cyl., it really runs smoothly. Once you start moving, it's very quiet and extremely fuel efficient. I only paid $1500 for it.
