1999 Chevrolet Cavalier problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Cavalier is a line of compact cars produced by Chevrolet. Serving as the replacement of the Chevrolet Monza, the Cavalier was the second Chevrolet model line to adopt front-wheel drive. Three versions of the Cavalier have been sold, including three generations sold in North America from model years 1982 to 2005, a version produced by SAIC-GM for China from 2016 to 2021, and a SAIC-GM version produced for Mexico since the 2019 model year.

The Cavalier was among the inaugural vehicles of the GM J platform. One of the first "world cars" of General Motors, the J platform was developed for use by each North American GM division (with the exception of GMC), alongside international models for Opel, Vauxhall, and Holden. Though sharing chassis underpinnings, J-body cars from Europe and Australia used slightly different body designs and different powertrains; in Europe, the Vauxhall Cavalier and Opel Ascona were marketed as mid-size cars. Initially a divisional counterpart of the Buick Skyhawk, Cadillac Cimarron, Oldsmobile Firenza, and Pontiac J2000, the Cavalier was primarily marketed alongside the Pontiac Sunbird (renamed the Pontiac Sunfire for 1995).

The 1982-2005 Cavalier was produced by multiple GM facilities across North America. For 2005, the Chevrolet Cobalt replaced the model line in North America.

1999 Chevrolet Cavalier engine

How many miles will a Cavalier last?

There are reports of 2003 Cavaliers topping 300,000 miles with the original powertrain and engine. One mechanic at Car Gurus even claims to have worked on an engine with 440,000 miles on it. But, as you can't vouch for the previous owner's maintenance habits, expect a lifespan of around 250,000 miles.

Why did Chevy stop making Cavaliers?

Contrary to the American markets, however, the cavalier remained on sale in other regions like Mexico for example. Stopping the Cavalier's production was a logical decision based on the declining sedan sales in the United States, a decision that left only the Malibu to represent the sedan segment in Chevrolet's lineup.

How many miles per gallon does a 1999 Chevy Cavalier get?

Based on data from 38 vehicles, 1,362 fuel-ups and 393,933 miles of driving, the 1999 Chevrolet Cavalier gets a combined Avg MPG of 26.19 with a 0.24 MPG margin of error.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2007-12-20
  • VIN: 1G1JF52T8X7
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
  • Summary: MY 1999 CHEVY CAVALIER'S FUEL GAUGE JUST STOPPED WORKING OUT OF THE BLUE. IT READS THAT THE FUEL TANK IS FULL AND DOESN'T DROP. WE DIDN'T KNOW THAT THIS HAD OCCURRED UNTIL MY CAR RAN OUT OF FUEL ON A 4-LANE HIGHWAY WHILE SITTING AT STOP LIGHT. WE WERE ALMOST GOT REAR ENDED BY APPROACHING HIGH-SPEED TRAFFIC MULTIPLE TIMES, AND WE WERE FORCED TO LEAVE MY VEHICLE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD TO GET TO SAFETY. LUCKILY MY HUSBAND WAS ABLE TO PUSH THE DANGED CAR OFF OF THE ROADWAY/INTERSECTION ONCE A PASSERBY STOPPED BEHIND US AND TURNED HIS HAZARD FLASHERS ON. THE NICE GENTLEMAN ALSO GOT OUT OF HIS VEHICLE AND HELPED MY HUSBAND PUSH THE CAR OFF OF THE ROADWAY. THANK GOD FOR GOOD SAMARITANS! THE FUEL GAUGE NEVER LEAVES "FULL". AFTER TALKING TO A DEALER AND SEVERAL AUTO SHOPS, WE DECIDED IT MADE MORE SENSE TO GO BY THE ODOMETER FROM NOW ON, WHICH IS A GIGANTIC INCONVENIENCE. THIS DECISION WAS MADE BASED UPON THE RIDICULOUSLY HIGH COST FOR REPAIR, ALONG WITH THE FACT THAT MOST MECHANIC'S TOLD US THAT THE FIX WOULD ONLY BE TEMPORARY, AS FUEL GAUGE FAILURES ACROSS THE BOARD IS A WELL-KNOWN COMMON GENERAL MOTORS PRODUCT PROBLEM, AND THAT A FUEL GAUGE FAILURE WILL LIKELY REAR IT'S UGLY HEAD AGAIN SOONER OR LATER. *TR

THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE AFTER MULTIPLE ATTEMPTS. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE THEY WERE UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 130,000.

AT ALL THREE FACILITIES I USED TO TRY AND REPAIR THIS PROBLEM I WAS INFORMED BY THE MECHANIC THAT THIS PROBLEM IS COMMON AMONG GM VEHICLES. I HAVE SPENT AT LEAST APPROXIMATELY $600 DOLLARS ON THIS PROBLEM AND IT STILL PERSIST. THE MECHANICS THAT I HAVE TAKEN IT TO HAVE ADJUSTED THE BRAKES SEVERAL TIMES BUT THE REAR BRAKES ARE STILL LOCKING FOR WHAT SEEMS LIKE NO APPARENT REASON ALL THREE MECHANICS SAY THE BRAKE ASSEMBLY LOOKS GOOD BUT I AM STILL NOT ABLE TO PASS INSPECTION. I WAS TOLD AT THE MOTOR VEHICLE INSPECTION STATION THAT THIS PROBLEM WILL CAUSE ME TO FISH TAIL EITHER CAUSING INJURY TO PASSENGERS IN MY CAR OR POSSIBLY OTHERS. *TR

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2000-06-01
  • VIN: 3G1JC1242XS
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: I PURCHASED A NEW 1999 CHEVY CAVALIER IN MARCH 1999 AND BEGAN HEARING CREAKING SOUNDS COMING FROM THE STEERING COLUMN ONE YEAR AFTER PURCHASE. SINCE THE CAR WAS UNDER WARRANTY I TOOK IT THE CHEVY DEALERSHIP WHERE I PURCHASED IT FOR REPAIR. THEY GREASED SOME PARTS TO DIMINISH THE NOISE. I TOOK THE CAR IN 2 OTHER TIMES TO HAVE IT LOOKED AT AND THE SAME ACTION WAS TAKEN, NO PARTS WERE EVER REPLACED. RECENTLY I TOOK THE CAR TO A CHEVY DEALERSHIP AND I WAS TOLD THE WHOLE STEERING COLUMN NEEDS TO BE REPLACED FOR ABOUT $2300. THERE ARE MULTIPLE COMPLAINTS AND WARNINGS TO MECHANICS THAT CONSUMERS MAY COME TO THEM WITH THESE ISSUES LISTED OVER THE LAST 9 YEARS. THEREFORE, THIS IS A FLAW WITH THE VEHICLE THAT UNTIL NOW CHEVROLET HAS NOT TAKEN RESPONSIBILITY FOR. CURRENTLY THE VEHICLE IS STILL MAKING THE NOISE AND I WAS WARNED IF THE WHEEL STARTS TO "STIFFEN UP" TO COME BACK IMMEDIATELY AS THE DANGER OF LOSING CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE IS EXTREMELY HIGH. *TR

  • Summary: TO MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT, MY CAR STARTED SMOKING THROUGH THE AC VENTS ONE DAY AND I DESCRIBED THIS TO A CHEVY 800 # REP AND HE SAID THAT IT WAS COVERED UNDER RECALL # 04002 IGNITION CIRCUIT THERMAL EVENTS. I TAKE IT TO THE DEALER, THEY SAID THEY FIXED IT. I GO TO PICK IT UP AND THE BURNED WIRES UNDER THE DASH WERE NOT REPLACED, THE THEFT SYSTEM LIGHT WAS STILL ON AND THE CAR STILL WOULD NOT SHUT OFF EVEN WITH THE KEY OUT OF THE IGNITION. I CALLED THE 800# BACK AND TOLD HIM I WAS GIVEN THE RUN AROUND AND NOW THIS GUY CLAIMS THAT HE NEVER TOLD ME THAT THE DAMAGE TO MY CAR WAS NOT COVERED UNDER THE RECALL AND THAT IT WOULD HAVE TO COME OUT OF POCKET. THIS IS RIDICULOUS. THE DESCRIPTION OF THE RECALL FITS EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED WITH MY CAR AND NOW THEY ARE TRYING TO GET AWAY WITH NOT FIXING MY CAR. I WANT IT FIXED! I JUST WANTED TO SEND THIS QUICK EMAIL AND WILL GO IN DEPTH ABOUT IT ONCE I RECEIVE YOUR REPLY. THANKS. *TR UPDATED 09/09/08

THE AIR CONDITIONING OVERFLOW TUBE WAS RELEASING WATER ONTO THAT PIECE OF METAL. ALTHOUGH WE DO NOT KNOW FOR SURE IF THIS WAS THE CAUSE THE DRIVERS SIDE IS NOT LIKE THAT. COULD HAVE JUST BEEN CHEAP METAL. ON NOV 30 OF 07 I WAS DRIVING MY CAR TO WORK AND IT JUST DID NOT FEEL RIGHT. WHEN YOU DRIVE A CAR EVERYDAY YOU NOTICE THESE THINGS BUT CANNOT PUT YOUR FINGER ON IT. THE NEXT DAY I WENT TO THE GROCERY STORE AND THE SUSPENSION FELT VERY LOOSE THROUGH THE STEERING WHEEL AND IT FELT LIKE IT WAS NOT TURNING CORRECTLY. THE MORE I DROVE THE WORSE IT GOT. ON THE WAY HOME I DROVE ONLY 20 MILES AN HOUR WITH MY HAZARD LIGHTS ON PRAYING I WOULD GET HOME WITHOUT INCIDENT OR ACCIDENT. IT FELT LIKE THE WHOLE FRONT END WAS GOING TO FALL OFF. THANK THE GOOD LORD I DID GET HOME ALRIGHT. MY HUSBAND PULLED OF BOTH WHEELS STARTING WITH LEFT AND THEN RIGHT AND DISCOVERED THE PROBLEM. WE TOOK PICTURES AND CALLED A TOW TRUCK TO TAKE IT TO OUR PREFERRED AUTO SHOP. BOTH THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER AND THE GUY AT THE SHOP SAID WE WERE VERY LUCKY THAT NOTHING BAD HAPPENED THAT WE ACTUALLY COULD HAVE LOST THE FRONT END. It looks like your vehicle has had a lot of work done! The transmission, steering gear, heater core, instrument clusters, alternators, brakes, spark plug wires, and strut mounts have all been replaced. There was also an issue with the voltage idiot light and digital odometer display. Let's take a closer look and see what we can do to get everything running smoothly.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with this car. When I first bought it, I had to take it back to the dealership three times because of wind noise. It was a bit frustrating, but they finally figured out that they had to adjust the rear window stop so it would fit flush with the front window. The ride can be a bit harsh and you feel all the bumps, but the engine is quite peppy. The power top works easily, which is a plus. Although, I do wish it had an overdrive gear for better fuel economy. Overall, it's been a decent car. Thanks for listening!

This wasn't my first choice for a replacement vehicle, but in retrospect, I really enjoy this little car. It has some zip to it and is nicely equipped with anti-locks, CD player, power windows, locks, etc. The front end has a tendency to pitch on curves and handling is only so-so. You feel every bump in the road, but for the money, don't expect the handling of a Viper. It's a great car to just drive with the top down and the music playing. Would I buy it again? Yeah, I think so.

I got my cavalier entering my senior year in high school and had it for a good 4 years. When I first got the car, it required some minor repairs from the previous owner, but once I took care of those, the car gave me almost no trouble. I only had to deal with minor issues here and there. The car never broke down on me while on the road and always started, except for one time when the starter had to be replaced. If you're looking for a reliable car, I highly recommend this one!

I am disappointed with GM. I purchased this car brand-new in 1999 and have taken great care of it. However, it unexpectedly failed and requires a new engine at only 64k miles. I will not be paying for this repair and will instead invest in a new vehicle, likely of foreign make. It is worth noting that I had no issues with the car prior to this, aside from a warranty-covered sunroof replacement.

Your Cav sounds like a great car! With 154k on the clock and still running strong, it's clear that you've taken good care of it. It's impressive that you haven't had any major repairs and that the original muffler and struts are still going strong. Even though the gas tank rusted, it's great to hear that it's still an excellent car for $9800 and gets 33 mpg. Just get in and go!

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my second Cavalier. I had a 1998 4-door sedan before this one, and I loved it so much that I decided to get another one. It's such a cute car and has a lot of pickup for a 4 cyl engine. Plus, it's reasonably priced! I've had no major problems with either of my Cavaliers, even though I've driven this one for over 70k miles. I plan on driving it until the wheels fall off. Thanks for listening!

  3. Ramon Labadie 2024-10-14

I just sold mine with 84,000+ miles, only because I need a bigger vehicle for my growing family! No mechanical problems at all! I had the rotor worked on once, but it was because I had to stop so hard and fast in a traffic jam. I did routine maintenance on everything, and my car was a dream to own. I loved taking long trips because of fuel economy and comfort, and it would handle speeding fine!

  4. Linwood Zemlak 2024-10-04

The car has only undergone general maintenance, a brake job, and a new battery replacement after 4 years.

  5. Milford Flatley 2024-10-01

You made a great choice when you bought your 1999 Cavalier in 2000, just over a year old. It has been an incredibly reliable car, taking you to your desired destinations without any issues, even with 146,000 miles on it! Although you recently replaced the transmission at 141k miles, you have had no major problems in ten years! While you may find the car somewhat boring to look at and drive, its reliability is something to be celebrated!
