1991 Chevrolet Caprice problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Caprice is a full-size car produced by Chevrolet in North America for the 1965 to 1996 model years. Full-size Chevrolet sales peaked in 1965 with over a million sold. It was the most popular car in the U.S. in the 1960s and early 1970s, which, during its lifetime, included the Biscayne, Bel Air, and Impala.

Introduced in mid-1965 as a luxury trim package for the Impala four-door hardtop, Chevrolet offered a full line of Caprice models for the 1966 and subsequent model years, including a "formal hardtop" coupe and an Estate station wagon. The 1971 to 1976 models are the largest Chevrolets ever built. The downsized 1977 and restyled 1991 models were awarded Motor Trend Car of the Year. Production ended in 1996.

From 2011 to 2017, the Caprice nameplate returned to North America as a full-size, rear wheel drive police vehicle, a captive import from Australia built by General Motors's subsidiary Holden—the police vehicle is a rebadged version of the Holden WM/WN Caprice. The nameplate also had a civilian and police presence in the Middle East from 1999 to 2017, where the imported Holden Statesman/Caprice built by Holden was marketed as the Chevrolet Caprice in markets such as Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Common 1991 Chevrolet Caprice problems

The Chevrolet Caprice 1991 has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. Here are the detailed descriptions of these problems:

  • Electric Power Steering Rack Failure: This issue has been reported to affect approximately 30% of 2014 Caprices. The electric power steering rack can fail, causing difficulty in steering the vehicle. If you own a 2014 Caprice, it is essential to be aware of this issue, especially if you are purchasing a used car.
  • AFM Lifters: This issue has been reported to affect 1991 Caprices with the L77 engine. The AFM lifters can cause the engine to malfunction, leading to a loss of power and potential damage to other engine components. If you own a 1991 Caprice with the L77 engine, it is advisable to plan for a cam swap as an eventuality.
  • Ignition Module or Voltage Regulator Issues: This issue has been reported to affect 1991 Caprices, causing the alternator light to come on and sometimes causing the blinkers to malfunction. The voltage regulator or ignition module may be the culprit, causing the battery gauge to fluctuate and the car to start up like new after the battery has been charged.
  • Speedometer Malfunction: This issue has been reported to affect 1991 Caprices, causing the speedometer to malfunction and stay at zero while the car is moving. This issue can be caused by corroded connectors or a faulty circuit board on the back of the instrument panel.
  • Engine Performance Issues: This issue has been reported to affect 1991 Caprices, causing a lack of power and stalling when the car is put in gear. This issue can be caused by several factors, including a faulty EGR valve, IAC valve, coolant temp sensor, TPS sensor, MAP sensor, PCV valve, ignition coil, oil pressure switch, fuel filter, T-stat, cap and rotor, plugs, plug wires, or a faulty fuel pressure regulator.

These are some of the common problems reported by owners of the Chevrolet Caprice 1991. If you are experiencing any of these issues, it is advisable to consult a qualified mechanic or dealership for further assistance.

Positive 1991 Chevrolet Caprice car reviews

  1. Eddie Lebsack 2024-10-04

This car is fantastic! I'm so glad to hear that you've never had any issues with it. It sounds like it handles really well and has plenty of power.

  2. Cletus Weissnat 2024-09-11

I have a 1991 Caprice and I'm thinking of getting a 1996 Buick Roadmaster. I'm hoping it will be just as good as my Caprice, which gets an impressive 31mpg. The only downside to my Caprice is the driver's seat - it's not a power one and, being only 5'2, I have to use a cushion to see over the dash. Additionally, I find the seat uncomfortable on drives longer than 1/2 hour. However, I've been told that the Buick will fix these issues. The car has 370,000km on it and the only thing that doesn't work is the A/C. The engine has never been opened up and burns no oil. I'm only considering switching because of the newer year and the power seats.

  3. Scottie Schneider 2024-08-09

This has really been the best car I have ever owned! For the first 6 months, I had absolutely no problems with it. However, after a while, some things started to wear out. I had to get the whole front steering done, then the intake manifold gasket, followed by shocks, and then the timing chain and valve cover gaskets. But since I did all the work myself instead of spending over $1250, I spent just under $350.

  4. Xavier Thompson 2024-08-02

The car is truly one of a kind, guaranteed to turn heads no matter what you drive. At almost 6 feet wide, it's the last of the real Land Yachts.

  5. Khalil Wolff 2024-07-01

Oil was changed every 3,000 (as close as possible) miles. You'll be happy to know that I have never had to add any oil between changes. Maintenance was always performed as soon as possible. The vehicle was never in any major accident and only three very minor ones. The upholstery is in excellent condition.
