1992 Chevrolet Caprice problems
The Chevrolet Caprice is a full-size car produced by Chevrolet in North America for the 1965 to 1996 model years. Full-size Chevrolet sales peaked in 1965 with over a million sold. It was the most popular car in the U.S. in the 1960s and early 1970s, which, during its lifetime, included the Biscayne, Bel Air, and Impala.
Introduced in mid-1965 as a luxury trim package for the Impala four-door hardtop, Chevrolet offered a full line of Caprice models for the 1966 and subsequent model years, including a "formal hardtop" coupe and an Estate station wagon. The 1971 to 1976 models are the largest Chevrolets ever built. The downsized 1977 and restyled 1991 models were awarded Motor Trend Car of the Year. Production ended in 1996.
From 2011 to 2017, the Caprice nameplate returned to North America as a full-size, rear wheel drive police vehicle, a captive import from Australia built by General Motors's subsidiary Holden—the police vehicle is a rebadged version of the Holden WM/WN Caprice. The nameplate also had a civilian and police presence in the Middle East from 1999 to 2017, where the imported Holden Statesman/Caprice built by Holden was marketed as the Chevrolet Caprice in markets such as Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Common 1992 Chevrolet Caprice problems
Based on the search results, there are several common problems reported by owners of the 1992 Chevrolet Caprice, including:
- Yellow gunk in oil: Some owners have reported finding yellow gunk in their oil, which is likely water or moisture in the oil. This can be caused by a number of issues, including a failed PCV valve, clogged PCV hoses, or a lack of proper maintenance. It is recommended to check all fluids, look for signs of cross contamination, and consider changing the engine oil, replacing the PCV valve, and cleaning out the PCV hoses and air intake.
- Missing MAF sensor: Some owners have reported missing a MAF (mass air flow) sensor, which is a critical component of the car's fuel injection system. Without a MAF sensor, the car may have difficulty starting or running properly. It is recommended to replace the missing MAF sensor as soon as possible to avoid further damage to the car's engine.
- Electric power steering rack issues: Some owners of 2014 Caprices have reported issues with the electric power steering racks, with about 30% of 2014 models experiencing failures. It is recommended to do research and be aware of this issue if considering a used 2014 Caprice.
It is important to note that these are common issues reported by owners of the 1992 Chevrolet Caprice, but not all cars of this model will experience these problems. Proper maintenance and regular check-ups can help prevent or address these issues.

- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
- Summary: I OWN A 1992 CAPRICE STATION WAGON. AFTER DRIVING FROM NEW YORK TO OKLAHOMA IN JANUARY OF 2001, I EXPERIENCED TOTAL BRAKE FAILURE AS A RESULT OF THE LEAKING OF THE ABS MODULATOR ON THIS CAR. A USED ABS MODULATOR WAS PURCHASED AND WAS USED TO REPLACE THE FAILED PART. ON 4-24-2001, I CAME ACROSS A SAFETY ALERT FOR THIS TYPE OF VEHICLE IN THE INTERNET THAT INDICATED THAT THERE HAD BEEN A RECALL FOR THE PART THAT HAD FAILED IN MY VEHICLE. THE RECALL # IS GM CAMPAIGN #97058 AND THE NHTSA # IS 97V217. THE SAFETY ALERT STATES THAT "DEALERS WILL INSPECT THESE VEHICLES AND REPLACE THE ABS MODULATOR." TO THE BEST OF MY KNOWLEDGE, THIS WORK WAS NEVER DONE NOR DID I EVER RECEIVE NOTICE OF A RECALL. I SPOKE WITH A CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE PERSON AT 1-800-222-1020 REGARDING THIS MATTER TODAY AND WAS INITIALLY TOLD THAT MY VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. AFTER ABOUT 20 MINUTES, THIS PERSON AGREED THAT NOT ONLY WAS MY VEHICLE INCLUDED IN THE RECALL BUT THAT THE RECALL WORK HAD BEEN PERFORMED ON 5-27-99 WHEN THE VEHICLE HAD 91K MILES. I CAN ASSURE YOU THAT THIS WORK WAS NEVER DONE AND THE PART WAS NEVER REPLACED ON THIS VEHICLE. I HAVE THE ORIGINAL PART AND THE USED PART THAT I PURCHASED TO REPLACE IT SEEMS TO BE OK FOR NOW. THE CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE PERSON WAS UNABLE TO TELL ME WHICH DEALERSHIP PERFORMED THE WORK. SHE GAVE ME A FILE # WHICH WAS C03934587. I BELIEVE THAT CHEVROLET SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE COST OF A NEW ABS MODULATOR AND THE LABOR TO INSTALL IT. THIS SEEMS TO BE THE INTENT OF THE RECALL NOTICE AS I READ IT. Oil was changed every 3,000 (as close as possible) miles. You'll be happy to know that I have never had to add any oil between changes. Maintenance was always performed as soon as possible. The vehicle was never in any major accident and only three very minor ones. The upholstery is in excellent condition.
-
Purchased as retired police car (132,000 CITY miles). The 5.7L engine is flawless, fast, and VERY potent! The car rides like a dream! During my visit to the East Coast, I hit up to 115 mph on I10 through Arizona. It felt like I was going no more than 50mph. The controls are well-made and can handle use without breaking.
-
You can count on this car to be very reliable. Although it blew an oil pan gasket at 130,000, it has had no other problems. Plus, it's easy to maintain as an owner.
-
This has really been the best car I have ever owned! For the first 6 months, I had absolutely no problems with it. However, after a while, some things started to wear out. I had to get the whole front steering done, then the intake manifold gasket, followed by shocks, and then the timing chain and valve cover gaskets. But since I did all the work myself instead of spending over $1250, I spent just under $350.
-
I purchased this vehicle last year with over 160000. It is in excellent shape. The car had been well taken care of by the looks of it, despite having a lot of miles on it. Even now, with over 212000 miles on it, it still doesn't use any oil and blows cold air. Plus, it gets 25 miles to the gallon on the highway! I absolutely love this car. Chevrolet really hit the mark with the caprice.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it from my great uncle when I was 8 years old and it had 70,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, I've had a few issues with it over the years. The EGR valve went at 85,000 miles, and then the EGR valve and catalytic converter went at 114,000 miles. The transmission also went at 114,000 miles, and I've had to replace the radiator twice in the last 3 years (even with a brand new one). I also had some trouble with the headlights and turn signals in one weekend. Overall, it's been a bit of a frustrating experience and I've decided to move on from this car. It currently has 116,000 miles on it. Thanks for listening!

Hey there! Just wanted to let you know that these cars aren't really fond of corners.
