- Braking System: Drivers have reported issues with the brakes, including the car shaking when applying the brakes. While a recall was issued in 2014 for brake lights, there have been no recalls specifically for the brakes themselves as of yet.
- Transmission Problems: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has been investigating transmission issues with the 2007 and 2008 Saturn Aura models. Complaints include the car failing to shift into the proper gear or failing to remain stopped when "Park" is selected. This issue may involve the jacket covering the transmission shifter cable wearing out prematurely, leading to transmission shifting failures and potential collisions.
These common problems reported by owners of the 2008 Saturn Aura highlight various issues ranging from electrical malfunctions to steering, powertrain, braking, and transmission concerns. Addressing these issues promptly and ensuring proper maintenance can help mitigate potential risks associated with these reported problems.
Is the 2008 Saturn Aura a good car?
Edmunds says
Although not without a few rough edges, the 2008 Saturn Aura is a well-rounded midsize sedan with sufficient levels of style, comfort and performance to please most families of four. If you're looking for a domestic-brand alternative to the import standbys, this is one of the best choices for 2008.
How long will a 2008 Saturn Aura last?
If you're hoping to hit 200,000 miles in your Aura, that isn't totally unreasonable, but you should expect a maximum mileage closer to 150,000 if you're buying a used model. The car can last for years to come if you take excellent care of it, but it's a lot easier to keep a Toyota or a Honda running than a Saturn.
Is the Saturn Aura reliable?
This car is known to be reliable. The exterior and interior are nothing too fancy but it has the necessities (functioning windows, A/C, mid size sedan space, decent trunk space, etc). Saturn is no longer in business so some have had issues finding parts and repairs may be expensive.
What is the transmission problem on the 2008 Saturn Aura?
Without proper protection, the metal wires inside the cable may deteriorate and prevent the transmission from shifting into the gear selected by the driver. The federal safety agency has received more than 100 reports of such transmission shifting failures; seven reports involved collisions.

- Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN
- Summary: I bought this 2008 Saturn Aura from dealer on 09/13/2023. Since I bought it, I fractured my hand and foot while checking the tires and brakes. 10/27/23 - I put the car in park to investigate what was causing the constant rattling noise while at the same time the car would shudder. While I was on one knee with one hand on ground so l could bend and look into the wheel well, the car rolled the tire over my hand and foot that was in its path because I wasn't able to move quick enough and didn't expect that to happen. 11/16/23 - I found out what the rattling noise and shudder was caused by when I completely lost all steering control and hit a tree which damaged the vehicle and caused injury, not only to myself but also to my 5 year old nephew who was in the car with me. I was told by a mechanic that a damaged joint bearing caused separation of the u-joint resulting in loss of steering control. What the hell is wrong with this car. I paid $1500 for the vehicle, then to top it off add injury costs I paid; the repairs and/or replacement of the u-joint and transmission shift cable due to damage. I don't know what to do to remedy the situation. I can't even afford to fix the body damage or replace the wheel rim damage caused by the wreck. Where do I go from here? I can't afford a new vehicle that why I bought this car. What a joke. Please advise. Maybe I can find free council.

POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-08-26
- VIN: 1G8ZS57N68F

- Summary: The transmission shifter assembly fractured on this 2008 Saturn Aura. This defect was issued a recall in 2014. https://auto-recalls.justia.com/saturn/aura/2008/14v224000/index.html This recall was completed. However this same assembly has once again fractured. The vehicle remains in drive even when the transmission lever is shifted into the parked position. There have been dozens of crashes and injuries reported, and this dangerous safety issue has been a known defect on over a million GM models. I believe that since this is a serious safety issue which has been proven to potentially cause injury and death, GM should cover it for as long as the vehicle is driven by owners.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-12-30
- VIN: 1G8ZS57N58F
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: The list goes on. Shifting issues started and we've been trying to figure it out among other issues.. Transmission shift cable. Power train transmission. Car randomly won't accelerate while driving. Dials not moving periodically. Coolant holds normally then randomly is emptied like their is a leak. Fill it up & it sucks it on like it won't hold it. Thirsty. Coolant leak but no service light. Car overheated for awhile but now doesn't. Wouod just shoot up to red zone. Got a call last night that it wasn't shifting right & sounded bad. Wks before randomly hard shifted. Our kid was stranded in the cold. Got to him & the car wouldn't shift from neutral. It rolled backwards on him & he threw on the parking brake thankfully!! Scary ordeal & thankful he is ok. When shifting gears, the shifter moved but sounds like it's not connected to anything & the gears don't shift. It stays in neutral. Car won't start. He also randomly has battery issues when his alternator & battery are good. Car just won't start randomly. It is available for inspection once we get it home.. I was led here thinking, it has to have recalls & we weren't notified then I saw recalls for this make & model, just not ours. No warning lights this time. Service engine has came on before them go off intermittently. We've had it connected at auto zone & fixed a few codes it through then service light went off. It's reduced engine power while driving & doesn't accelerate. Drives slow. Reduced power. All these previous issues now the shifting cable. :(
STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-11-08
- VIN: 1G8ZS57B28F
- Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: Check engine, ABS, and traction control indicator lights have come on and gone off intermittently, even though the car has received routine services, as indicated -- though prior to that, for many months, the tire pressure indicator light would come on and go off intermittently. As I drove about 25 to 30 mph, the above mentioned control lights came on as I came to a stop, followed by the power steering indicator light (for the first time). Immediately, there was loss of power steering control. With great difficulty, I drove the car about 3 blocks and attempted to park. It took about 15 minutes to parallel park in a large space, with great difficulty. I turned off the engine and let the car sit for about 10 to 15 minutes, then restarted the car, which then seemed to be fine (at least drivable) -- though the check engine and traction control lights remained on. (Still, I was afraid to drive -- thinking the power steering could go out at any time, knowing it could easily result in no control of the car, grave danger, and serious accident. Anyway, with trepidation, I drove the car back home, where it has sat since. I find the host of this car's repairs troublesome and expensive. As for the loss of power steering -- I find this unconscionable.

2008 Saturn Aura recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 5 recalls for different components of the 2008 Saturn Aura.
- Manufacturer: Dorman Products, Inc.
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: Dorman Products, Inc. (Dorman) is recalling certain replacement intermediate steering shafts sold under the Dorman, OE Solutions, and Solutions brand names, part numbers 425-167, 2425167, and 7-3074, for installation on 2004-2012 Chevrolet Malibu, 2005-2010 Pontiac G6, and 2007-2009 Saturn Aura vehicles. The affected steering shafts may have a yoke that inadequately supports the u-joint bearing resulting in a premature failure.
- Consequence: A joint bearing that fails prematurely may cause separation of the u-joint resulting in a complete loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Dorman will notify owners, and dealers will refund the purchase price or replace the steering shafts, free of charge. The recall began in September 2014. Owners may contact Dorman customer service at 1-800-523-2492.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING
- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2004-2012 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles manufactured May 16, 2003, through October 11, 2012, 2004-2007 Malibu Maxx vehicles manufactured June 25, 2003, through April 5, 2007, 2005-2010 Pontiac G6 vehicles manufactured May 26, 2004, through January 4, 2010, and 2007-2010 Saturn Aura vehicles manufactured April 24, 2006, through May 26, 2009. In the affected vehicles, increased resistance in the Body Control Module (BCM) connection may result in voltage fluctuations in the Brake Apply Sensor (BAS) circuit. These fluctuations can cause one or more of these conditions: the brake lights to illuminate without the brake pedal being pushed; the brake lights to not illuminate when the pedal is pushed; difficulty disengaging the cruise control; moving the gear shifter out of the 'PARK' position without pushing the brake; and disablement of crash avoidance features such as traction control, electronic stability control, and panic braking assist features.
- Consequence: Any of the above failure conditions increases the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will attach the wiring harness to the BCM with a spacer, apply dielectric lubricant to both the BCM and harness connector and the BAS and harness connector, and will relearn the brake pedal home position, free of charge. The manufacturer distributed an Interim letter to customers on July 14, 2014. The recall began on August 18, 2014. Owners may contact General Motors customer service at 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), 1-800-762-2737 (Pontiac), 1-800-553-6000 (Saturn). GM's number for this recall is 13036.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on April 29, 2014, that they are recalling 56,214 model year 2007 and 2008 Saturn Aura vehicles. On May 22, 2014, GM increased the recall to include an additional 1,074,899 model year 2004-2008 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles manufactured from May 16, 2003, through October 5, 2007, model year 2004-2007 Malibu Maxx vehicles manufactured from June 25, 2003, through April 5, 2007, and model year 2005-2008 Pontiac G6 vehicles manufactured from May 26, 2004, through September 28, 2007, and equipped with 4-speed transmissions. The total number vehicles being recalled is now 1,131,113.
- Consequence: If the transmission shift cable fractures while the vehicle is being driven, the transmission gear selection may not match the indicated gear and the vehicle may move in an unintended or unexpected direction, increasing the risk of a crash. Furthermore, when the driver goes to stop and park the vehicle, despite selecting the PARK position, the transmission may not be in PARK. If the vehicle is not in the "PARK" position there is a risk the vehicle will roll away as the driver and other occupants exit the vehicle or anytime thereafter. A vehicle rollaway increases the risk of injury to exiting occupants and bystanders.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and GM dealers will replace the shift cable assembly and mounting bracket, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-553-6000. GM's number for this recall is 14152.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: STEERING:ELECTRIC POWER ASSIST SYSTEM
- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2004-2006 and 2008-2009 Chevrolet Malibu, 2004-2006 Malibu Maxx, 2009-2010 HHR (non-turbo), 2010 Cobalt, 2008-2009 Saturn Aura and 2004-2007 Ion, and 2005-2009 Pontiac G6. In the affected vehicles, there may be a sudden loss of electric power steering (EPS) assist that could occur at any time while driving.
- Consequence: If power steering assist is lost, greater driver effort would be required to steer the vehicle at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will perform one of four bulletins. Parts are not currently available. GM expects to send an interim notification around May 28, 2014. When parts are available, owners will be mailed a second letter to come in to have the applicable bulletin applied. Bulletin 14115 covers model year 2004-2007 Saturn Ion, 2009-2010 Chevrolet HHR and 2010 Chevrolet Cobalts. Dealers will replace the EPS motor. Bulletin 14116 covers model year 2004-2006 Chevrolet Malibu and Malibu Maxx, 2005-2006 Pontiac G6 and 2008-2009 Chevrolet Malibu, Pontiac G6 and Saturn Aura built from March 1, 2008, through June 27, 2008. Dealers will replace the torque sensor assembly. Bulletin 14117 covers model year 2008 Chevrolet Malibu, Pontiac G6 and Saturn Aura built from February 1, 2008, through February 28, 2008. Dealers will replace the torque sensor assembly and EPS motor controller unit. Bulletin 14118 covers model year 2008 Chevrolet Malibu, Pontiac G6 and Saturn Aura built from October 1, 2007, through January 31, 2008. Dealers will replace the EPS motor controller unit. The recall began on July 17, 2014. Owners may contact Chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438, Saturn at 1-800-553-6000, and Pontiac at 1-800-620-7668. GM's number for this recall is N140115. Note: GM bulletin number 14119 will be implemented for model year 2006-2008 and early production of 2009 Chevrolet HHR (non-turbo) and model year 2003 Saturn ION to provide EPS Motor replacement for the life of the vehicle.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:GEAR POSITION INDICATION (PRNDL)
- Summary: General Motors (GM) is recalling certain model year 2007-2010 Saturn Aura and model year 2008-2010 Chevrolet Malibu and Pontiac G6 vehicles, equipped with a 4-speed automatic transmission. On these vehicles, the tabs on the transmission shift cable end may fracture and separate.
- Consequence: If the tabs were to fracture and separate, the shift lever and the actual position of the transmission gear may not match. The driver would be able to move the shifter to 'PARK' and remove the ignition key, but the transmission gear may not be in 'PARK.' The vehicle may not be able to be restarted and the vehicle could roll away after the driver has exited the vehicle, resulting in a possible crash without prior warning.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install a retainer over the cable end or replace the shift cable as necessary. This service will be performed free of charge. Notification to owners began on on November 9, 2012. Owners were instructed to not bring their vehicles for repair until January 2013. Owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-521-7300.

I recently purchased a new car without any prior preferences. I was simply looking for a good fit. Interestingly, I stumbled upon it by mistake when I misread the dealer's advertisement for an Acura as an Aura! However, when I saw the black, sleek, stylish design and the great price, I knew it was the one for me. As a tall rugby player, I require a lot of room, so I opted for the model without a sunroof (who needs it anyway?). I completely agree with all the positive comments I've read about it so far. While it may not have a top luxury interior, it is incredibly spacious and comes at a great price. On a side note, I was disappointed to hear that GM has closed Saturn. I couldn't help but wonder why they would end a modern, distinctive, and fairly-priced range while keeping two mediocre look-alike clones (Chevy and GMC).
-
The Saturn Aura is an outstanding car, especially when you consider its value for money. The exterior design gives the impression of a more expensive car. We test drove the XR and found that it had more torque and horsepower than we needed. We also test drove the Malibu and while Chevy has more interesting interiors, we found the people at Saturn to be more consumer friendly. The inline 4 engine has good power and the sound and vibration damping are really well done.

253000 miles looks and runs like almost new! I'm so glad you're considering this car. It's incredibly comfortable and has a great ride. It's a shame they stopped making it.
-
This is a great car and they finally got it right! It's a shame that GM couldn't run their corporation correctly and lost a future customer like me. I'm excited to check out Honda's new cars in 2011!
-
I recently purchased the Saturn Aura and I must say, it is truly a remarkable vehicle. The ride, handling, and performance are unparalleled in its class, surpassing even the most well-known foreign brands. Not only does it exceed its EPA fuel economy, but it also boasts a smooth ride reminiscent of a Cadillac, combined with the performance of a Corvette and European styling. As someone who has owned five Saturns, I can confidently say that this is the best one yet. I highly recommend the Saturn Aura to anyone in the market for a new car. You won't be disappointed!

Sorry to hear about the issues you've been experiencing with your car. It sounds like you've had a lot of trouble with the doors, locks, and electrical system. Additionally, it seems like the ems computer has been causing some problems with starting and the temperature gauge. It's frustrating when a car doesn't work as it should. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

I am experiencing issues with my 2008 Saturn, including a locked steering wheel and overheating. Despite multiple visits to the shop, the problems persist. However, I am confident that I will find a solution to these issues and get my car back on the road.

I had this car for less than a month and unfortunately, I experienced some issues with it. The transmission went out and then a couple of weeks later, one of the headlights stopped working. Additionally, the other headlight flashes a little when I press the brakes, almost like it has a shortage. I also had some trouble with snow traction and got stuck three times, but thankfully I wasn't in a rush to get anywhere. Recently, I had to replace the coil pack due to a misfire, which was a bit scary as it happened suddenly while I was driving. While I've had some challenges with this car, I would recommend doing some research before making a purchase decision. Thank you for considering my experience.

I purchased this car to tow behind my motorhome, but unfortunately, I have experienced a number of issues with it. While some problems are to be expected with a 10-year-old car, this one has been beyond what I would consider acceptable. I have had a number of electrical problems, including issues with the remote door lock button and key fobs, as well as having to replace the traction control sensor. The battery has also been running down frequently. The most recent problem has been with the starter, which has been unreliable and has left me stranded on more than one occasion. Despite taking the car to the dealer for a diagnosis, they were unable to find any issues, leaving me feeling frustrated and out of pocket for the $175 diagnosis fee. I suspect that the problem lies with the starter, but the dealer was unable to confirm this. Overall, I have been disappointed with the reliability of this car, but I remain hopeful that the issues can be resolved.

This car has had multiple issues, including alternator failure within 2 days of purchase, transmission slipping after 4 months, and radiator and fan failure shortly after. Despite replacing all of these components, the transmission failed completely after only 2 years. It is clear that this car did not meet expectations and had significant mechanical problems.
