2000 Mazda Millenia problems

mazda logo

The Mazda Millenia is an automobile which was manufactured by Mazda in Japan from 1993 to 2002.

The Millenia was originally planned as the second of three models for Mazda's proposed luxury brand Amati. As the company's dwindling finances caused by the onslaught of the "bubble economy" prevented the launch of the Amati brand, the Millenia was released in the autumn of 1993 in Europe as the Mazda Xedos 9 and in Japan and Australia as the Eunos 800. The car was launched in North America in 1995 as the Mazda Millenia and in July 1997 the Japanese market Eunos 800 was also renamed to Mazda Millenia as Mazda discontinued the Eunos brand. There was no model link to the other Mazda marque, Ẽfini.

Having been developed for a separate market from typical Mazda customers, the Millenia boasted myriad finer details. It was engineered to far greater levels of perceived quality than existing Mazda cars, such as interior plastic quality, panel gap and thicker paint coating. The Millenia/Eunos 800/Xedos 9 was assembled along with the smaller Eunos 500/Mazda Xedos 6 in a new production line, presumably set up for Amati cars.

The Millenia does not have a direct predecessor or replacement in the Mazda product line, and production ceased with the introduction of the Mazda6 in 2002, itself a replacement for the 626. It appears to have received a brand-new platform, although the multi-link suspension at both ends strongly resembled that of the 1991 Mazda Sentia, with minor changes such as replacing the lower I-arm with an A-arm for front wheel drive. It was the only production car in the world to employ a Miller cycle engine (The current Demio/Mazda2 features Miller Cycle on one of its engines). Yaw-sensitive four-wheel steering was available as an option in Japan; Mazda claimed that with this feature, the Millenia was capable of passing the elk test at speeds comparable to the BMW 850i and Nissan 300ZX.

The 1997 Japanese market name change from Eunos 800 to Mazda Millenia was accompanied by a significant facelift that included some cost-saving measures. For instance, the hood was downgraded from aluminum to steel. The Millenia was again facelifted for the 2001 model year.

Common 2000 Mazda Millenia problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the Mazda Millenia 2000, common problems with this car include:

  1. Misfires Under Load:
    • Owners reported experiencing misfires under load, which can affect the car's performance and fuel efficiency. Misfires can be caused by issues with the ignition system, fuel delivery, or engine components.
    • Misfires can lead to rough idling, loss of power, and potentially damage the engine if left unresolved. Regular maintenance and timely repairs are essential to address this issue.
  2. Excessive Oil Consumption Due to Supercharger Oil Seal Leak:
    • A common complaint was excessive oil consumption due to a supercharger oil seal leak. This issue can result in oil leaks, reduced engine performance, and potential engine damage if not addressed promptly.
    • Owners should monitor oil levels regularly, address any leaks promptly, and consider professional inspection and repair to prevent long-term damage to the engine.
  3. Check Engine Light Due to Restricted EGR System:
    • Another prevalent issue was the check engine light coming on due to a restricted Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system. A restricted EGR system can lead to increased emissions, reduced fuel efficiency, and engine performance issues.
    • Proper diagnosis and repair of the EGR system are crucial to ensure the car operates efficiently and complies with emission standards. Regular maintenance can help prevent EGR system issues.
  4. Transmission Problems:
    • The Mazda Millenia 2000 was known to have transmission issues, including problems with the torque converter clutch, which can cause slipping or erratic shifting. Regular transmission fluid changes and maintenance are essential to prevent transmission problems.
    • Addressing transmission issues promptly can prevent further damage and ensure the car's drivability and safety on the road.
  5. Electrical Problems:
    • Owners reported various electrical problems, such as issues with the electric door locks, speed sensors, and CD player. Electrical issues can lead to malfunctions in critical systems, affecting the car's overall performance and convenience features.
    • Proper diagnosis by a qualified mechanic and timely repairs are necessary to address electrical problems and maintain the car's functionality.

These common problems with the Mazda Millenia 2000 highlight the importance of regular maintenance, prompt repairs, and thorough inspections to ensure the car's reliability, performance, and safety on the road.

What happened to the Mazda Millenia?

Unfortunately, the Mazda Millenia wasn't particularly popular and faded into obscurity after being discontinued in 2002. Mazda never used the KJ-ZEM in any of its other models, as it was relatively complex and expensive to produce. This makes it among the rarest of Mazda's engines today.

LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-04-13
  • VIN: JM1TA2211Y1
  • Components: LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES
  • Summary: THE FIRST TIME I HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE DOOR LOCKS THE L/R DOOR WOULD NOT OPEN. AFTER SOME TIME I WAS ABLE TO OPEN THE DOOR BY MANUALLY HOLDING THE UNLOCK BUTTON WHILE PULLING ON THE DOOR HANDLE. A FEW MONTHS LATER THE R/R DOOR WOULD NOT UNLOCK. I COULD NOT UNLOCK THE DOOR FROM EITHER INSIDE OR OUTSIDE, THIS MAKES 2 DOORS INOPERABLE. SOME TIME LATER,THE R/F DOOR WON'T UNLOCK OR OPEN FROM OUTSIDE. THE R/F DOOR CAN BE OPENED BY HOLDING UP ON THE UNLOCK BUTTON AND PULLING ON THE INSIDE DOOR HANDLE . THIS MAKES 3 DOORS DOWN, ALSO, DOOR LOCKS MAKE A WHINING NOISE, WHAT A DEATH TRAP. I AM 72 YEARS OLD AND I HAVE NEVER IN MY LIFE SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THIS. I WAS TOLD THAT REPAIR COST WOULD BE ABOUT 350.00 PER DOOR. THANK YOU. *JB

STEERING,SUSPENSION,ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EQUIPMENT PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2007-01-18
  • VIN: JM1TA2226Y1
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EQUIPMENT
  • Summary: BEFORE OUR FACTORY WARRANTY WAS UP THE DEALERSHIP FIXED OUR CATALYTIC CONVERTER 3 TIMES. AFTER OUR EXTENDED WARRANTY WAS UP WE IN THE LAST 6 MONTHS HAD TO FIX BOTH UPPER CAMBER ARMS, DRIVER SIDE AXEL, TIRE ROD ENDS ON BOTH SIDES, DRIVER SIDE WHEEL BEARINGS, AND NOW JUST YESTERDAY WE BROKE DOWN. THE BELT PULLEY TENSIONER WENT. THE MAZDA PARTS CO. HAD TOLD ME THAT THEY HAD THIS PART IN STOCK ABOUT 10 MINUTES AGO BUT SOLD IT. THIS IS A $300.00 PART AND THE MAINTNENCE IS ABOUT $500.00 TO HAVE THEM FIX IT. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY THERE HASN'T BEEN ANY RECALLS ON THIS VEHICLE. THE TRADE IN VALUE ISN'T EVEN WHAT WE OWE ON THE CAR. WE STILL HAVE 2 1/2 YEARS OF PAYMENTS. THE CAR WAS BURNING SOMETHING BUT THERE WAS NO FIRE. IT WAS THE BELT FALLING OFF WHILE I WAS DRIVING. *NM

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2006-04-15
  • VIN: JM1TA2227Y1
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: THE IGNITION COILS IN MY CAR ARE GOING BAD. ONE RIGHT AFTER THE OTHER. MAZDA TOLD ME THAT THE HEAT OF THE ENGINE (MILLER CYCLE) IS CAUSING THIS. I THINK THE ENGINE WAS POORLY DESIGNED. THERE ARE 6 COILS & I HAVE REPLACED 3 SO FAR, 1 IN 12/04 & 2 IN 4/06 ALONG WITH ALL THE PLUGS. THIS PROBLEM STARTED IN 2002 WHEN CYLINDER #4 WAS MISFIRING. MAZDA REPLACED THE SPARK PLUG. THE COIL IN CYLINDER #4 WAS THE FIRST COIL TO GO BAD. THE ORIGINAL PLUGS WERE CHAMPION. I WAS TOLD THESE WERE THE WRONG PLUGS ESPECIALLY FOR THIS TYPE OF HIGH PERFORMANCE ENGINE. MAZDA SAID TO EXPECT TO REPLACE THE OTHER 3 COILS. & THEN WHAT? DO WE START OVER AGAIN? MY CAR ONLY HAS 32,000 MILES ON IT. BOTH CATALYTIC CONVERTERS HAVE BEEN REPLACED. I THINK MAZDA SHOULD DO SOMETHING TO CORRECT THE DESIGN OF THIS ENGINE TO ALLOW THE COILS MORE AIR. *JB

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2004-04-11
  • VIN: JM1TA2223Y1
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I PURCHASED A 2000 MILLENIA MILLENIA MODEL THAT ONLY HAS 39,000 MILES ON IT. IN OCTOBER, 2003 MY CAR MIS-FIRED AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. THE DIAGNOSIS WAS THAT THE IGNITION COIL FOR CYLINDER #2 WAS BAD AND NEEDED REPLACING. AT THAT TIME, MAZDA CUSTOMER SERVICE PAID FOR THE PART AND I PAID FOR THE LABOR. A FEW DAYS AGO (SIX MONTHS LATER), AN IDENTICAL SITUATION OCCURRED AND THE DIAGNOSIS WAS THAT THE IGNITION COIL FOR CYLINDER # 6 WAS BAD AND NEEDED REPLACING. THE DEALERSHIP CALLED MAZDA INQUIRING ABOUT RESTITUTION, BUT THIS TIME, THE COMPANY PAID FOR NOTHING. I AM VERY CONCERNED ABOUT TWO THINGS. FIRST, WHAT IS THE DEFECT IN MY VEHICLE TO PRECIPITATE THE FAILURE OF TWO IGNITION COILS IN CLOSE SUCCESSION? IS THIS AN ENGINEERING DEFECT? FURTHER, AM I GOING TO HAVE TO GO THROUGH THIS PROCESS FOR ALL 6 CYLINDERS OF MY CAR ENGINE? RIGHT NOW, I FEEL THAT I CANNOT TRUST MY CAR FOR FEAR OF A REPEAT OCCURRENCE WITH ONE OR MORE OF THE OTHER CYLINDERS. SECOND, IF I HAVE TO REPLACE ALL THE COILS, I FIGURE THAT THE INVESTMENT WILL BE BETWEEN $1500 AND $2000 TO FULLY FIX THE CAR. THIS IS AN EXTRAORDINARY EXPENSE TO FIX WHAT I CONSIDER AN ENGINEERING PROBLEM! IS THERE A "PRODUCT RECALL" OR "SPECIAL SERVICE PROGRAM" TO ASSIST WITH PAYING FOR FIXING THIS PROBLEM? IDEALLY, I SHOULD HAVE ALL OF MY IGNITION COILS REPLACED IN ORDER TO HAVE A TRUSTWORTHY CAR AGAIN. IN SUMMARY, I BELIEVE THAT THIS IS AN UNSAFE SITUATION AND WANTED TO REPORT IT TO YOU. THANK YOU.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2003-08-15
  • VIN: JM1TA2227Y1
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: I OWN A 2000 MAZDA MILLENIA S MODEL. MY MILLENIA HAS THE LYSHOLM SUPERCHARGER (S/C). RECENTLY, THE CAR HAS BEGUN TO BLOW BLUE SMOKE OUT THE EXHAUST PIPE AT STARTUP. THE SMOKE AT STARTUP LAST FOR ABOUT 15-30 SECONDS. I TOOK THE CAR INTO THE LOCAL MAZDA DEALER. THE MAZDA MECHANIC REMOVED THE FRONT INTERCOOLER AND FRONT INTERCOOLER PIPE. THE MECHANIC SAID THERE WAS OIL IN THE INTERCOOLER AND THE INTERCOOLER PIPE. HE SAID THIS INDICATES THE LYSHOLM S/C IS LEAKING. HE SAID THE LYSHOLM S/C HAS A BAD SEAL. YET, HE SAID HE HAS NEVER TAKEN A LYSHOLM S/C APART AND DOES NOT KNOW WHICH SEAL IS LEAKING. HE SAID MAZDA JUST REPLACES THE ENTIRE LYSHOLM S/C. A NEW LYSHOLM S/C IS APPROX. $7000 CAD. MY CAR HAS THE 5 YR /100,000KM (62,500 MILES)POWER TRAIN WARRANTY. THE POWER TRAIN WARRANTY STATES IT COVERS "..ALL INTERNAL PARTS"...AND "..ALL GASKETS AND SEALS..". THE SEAL FAILED INSIDE THE S/C, THEREFORE I BELIEVE THE S/C SEAL AND ITS REPLACEMENT SHOULD BE COVERED UNDER THE POWER TRAIN WARRANTY. MAZDA DISAGREES WITH ME, THOUGH MAZDA IS WILLING TO PAY 50% OF THE COST OF A NEW S/C. MAZDA HAS ISSUED AN M-TIP (SIMILAR TO A TSB) FOR PROBLEMS WITH OIL LEAKING FROM THE S/C. THE REMEDY IS TO REPLACE THE S/C. I FEEL MAZDA KNOWS THE S/C IS PRONE TO LEAKING PREMATURELY.

Negative 2000 Mazda Millenia car reviews

  1. Justice Ratke 2024-11-10

I got a great deal on my Millenia from a bank at loan value. The car was in good condition with 69K miles. However, I later discovered that the 60K mile tuneup had not been performed. When I went to the dealer, they quoted me $1500 for the tuneup. It's important to keep in mind that while you can get these cars for a low price, maintenance costs can add up quickly. I've also experienced some minor issues with the car, such as the serpentine belt tensioner coming loose, which sounded like a blown engine but was an easy fix. The transmission can be indecisive at times, but overall the car has served me well. It's worth noting that resale value is not great due to the fact that the car is no longer in production.

  2. Deonte Watsica 2024-08-24

The Car Over All is a decent car for the money. It's probably the nicest car I've had in a while. However, the check engine light has stayed on since I got the car. At first, the O2 sensors were bad, and the Map sensor, as well as a few things inside the computer, have gone wrong. The person working on the car said it's the third time within two months that he's tried to fix it. Today, I was asked to go pick it up and take it somewhere else. It's very frustrating to me. The dealer where I bought it seems not to care. I've talked to several people who have bought cars, and the same check engine problem has occurred with five that I know of.

  3. Buford Swaniawski 2024-05-06

I bought the Millenia back in March 2002, but unfortunately, I've had a lot of issues with it since then. I've been to the dealership twice a month since then. Within the first three months of owning the car, the master brake cylinder went out, and I've had to replace the driver side mirror motor, the rear struts, and fix a door that wasn't closing properly. I also had an issue with the ignition switch malfunctioning, which prevented the car from starting. Additionally, the transmission regulator has been malfunctioning, and I've had to replace some wires and plugs. I even had to replace the entire rear windshield because the rear window defroster cracked. On top of all that, the rear panels of the driver's seat keep falling off, and I have to adjust the fog lights every two months. Unfortunately, the paint is cracking all over, and in April 2003, my transmission finally gave out.

  4. Jaydon Mitchell 2024-01-21

The car is really great when the engine light is off. Although it spends a lot of time in the shop and the car parts are quite expensive, I still have a soft spot for it since I would have loved it when it was new.

Positive 2000 Mazda Millenia car reviews

  1. Darrell Luettgen 2024-11-03

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your Mazda vehicle! It sounds like it has the perfect combination of comfort, performance, and style that you were looking for. And it's great to hear that you haven't had any maintenance issues, especially compared to previous years.

  2. Okey Hickle 2024-10-05

This car has a sporty and luxurious appearance, while also providing a smooth ride and excellent braking power. Although it may appear to be a car for older individuals, don't be fooled - it can move quickly!

  3. Rickey Sipes 2024-10-03

And you'll love the real taste of a quiet and comfortable ride. The car also delivers excellent passing ability on the highway thanks to its powerful engine. Plus, the traction control really makes a difference when climbing up icy driveways - it's even better than my 540i!

  4. Aurelio Mraz 2024-09-28

The Millenia S drives uncommonly well. I consider it a luxury sports sedan. The driver sits low in the car in a firm comfortable leather seat, which provides a great driving experience. The view over the low hood line is virtually unobstructed, giving the driver a clear view of the road ahead. The car accelerates willingly and its taught suspension and wide low profile tires on oversized rims give excellent traction, enabling the driver to take substantial liberties with speed limits in turns. The car has a nimble and solid feel to it, making it a pleasure to drive.

  5. Sherwood Hand 2024-09-27

The car handles well, is good on gas, comfortable to drive, and is very nice to own. I wouldn't sell it for anything in the world, but I would like to buy another one.
