2005 Ford Excursion problems
The Ford Excursion is a heavy-duty (Class 2) SUV that was sold by Ford Motor Company from 2000 to 2005. At the time of its introduction, the Excursion was the longest and heaviest SUV ever to enter mass production. The third Ford SUV derived from the F-Series pickup trucks (after the Ford Bronco and the Ford Expedition), the model line used a heavier-duty chassis and frame than the Expedition; both vehicles competed against the Chevrolet Suburban.
Developed as a competitor for the 2500-series (3⁄4-ton) Chevrolet Suburban/GMC Yukon XL, the Ford Excursion was derived from the 3⁄4-ton F-250 Super Duty pickup truck (sharing its chassis with the regular cab, long-bed chassis). The model line was produced for a single generation; a shortened 2006 model year was offered exclusively for Mexico. Sold nearly exclusively in the North American market, limited numbers of the model line were produced for export. As of current production, the Excursion remains the largest mass-produced SUV (matched in length by the 2023 introduction of the lighter Jeep Grand Wagoneer L); currently, only the GMC Hummer EV SUV is heavier.
Throughout its production run, the Excursion was assembled at its Kentucky Truck Plant (Louisville, Kentucky) alongside the Ford Super Duty line; the final example was produced on September 30, 2005. For 2007, Ford introduced the extended-length Ford Expedition EL/MAX (today, Expedition MAX), competing more closely against the 1500-series Suburban in capability.

Common 2005 Ford Excursion problems
The Ford Excursion, a popular choice among SUV enthusiasts, has its fair share of common problems. Here are some of the most prevalent issues reported by owners:
- Inoperative Door Locks: Many Excursion owners have encountered problems with door locks becoming inoperative due to resistance in the circuit. This issue can affect one or multiple doors, making it inconvenient and posing a security risk.
- Rough Idle Due to EGR Sensor Sticking: The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) sensor can stick, leading to a rough idle. This problem is usually accompanied by the Check Engine light, and cleaning or replacing the EGR valve can remedy the issue.
- High-Pressure Oil Pump Failure: The high-pressure oil pump is critical for the Excursion's engine operation, especially in diesel models. Failure of this component can cause a "No Start" condition, requiring replacement to get the engine running again.
- Oil Leaks: Oil leaks from the passenger-side head gasket onto the starter is another issue that has plagued some Excursion models. This not only leads to oil loss but can also cause starter problems due to oil contamination.
- Incorrect Engine Oil Leading to Hard Starts: Using the wrong type of engine oil can lead to hard starting conditions, especially in colder climates. It is essential to use the manufacturer-recommended oil to avoid this issue.
- Injector Seal Leaks: Diesel models can suffer from oil leaking into the fuel system due to injector seal leaks. This problem can affect engine performance and fuel efficiency.
- Stuck Turbo: A lack of power or poor acceleration can sometimes be traced back to a stuck turbo in diesel models. Regular maintenance and checks can prevent this issue.
- EGR Cooler Leaks: Coolant leaks from the EGR cooler are not uncommon and can lead to overheating and engine damage if not addressed promptly.
- VGT Solenoid Failure: The Variable Geometry Turbo (VGT) solenoid controls turbo boost in diesel models. Failure of this component can result in a lack of power or a "No Boost" condition.
These common problems, while not exhaustive, provide a snapshot of the issues Ford Excursion owners may encounter. Being aware of these problems can help owners maintain their vehicle's performance and reliability.

- Summary: WHILE MERGING ONTO 75MPH HIGHWAY, WITHOUT WARNING, VEHICLE LOST ALL POWER MAKING STEERING NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE. WE WERE ABLE TO MOVE ONTO SHOULDER JUST AT THE POINT WHERE HIGHWAY AND ON RAMP MET. WE COULD NOT RESTART VEHICLE AND HAD WE MADE IT ONTO HIGHWAY, COULD HAVE VERY EASILY BEEN REAR ENDED BY ONCOMING TRAFFIC. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME WE HAVE LOST COMPLETE POWER WITH THIS VEHICLE. WE HAD SAME SITUATION IN JULY AND HAD PAID OVER TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS TO HAVE FUEL SYSTEM REPAIRED. FORD HAD RECALL ON THIS BUT OUR TRUCK'S VIN DID NOT FALL UNDER RECALL. HOWEVER, HAVE CONCERNS FOR OTHERS WHO HAVE VEHICLES WHOSE VINS ARE NOT PART OF THE RECALL. ANOTHER FAMILY MAY NOT BE AS FORTUNATE AS WE WERE YESTERDAY. VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2009-07-20
- VIN: 1FMSU45P55E
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: WE HAVE HAD NUMEROUS INCIDENTS WITH OUR EXCURSION DATING BACK TO ONE WEEK AFTER WE PURCHASED IT USED FROM A LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP IN JULY 2009 UNTIL NOW - SEPT. 2012. WE BEGAN EXPERIENCING ACCELERATION ISSUES AFTER THE FIRST WEEK. WE RETURNED THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR A DIAGNOSTIC EVALUATION. THEY REPLACED THE IPR AND FUEL PUMP. THIS SEEMED TO FIX THE PROBLEM UNTIL JANUARY 2011. IN JANUARY 2011, THE ACCELERATOR BEGAN FAILING AGAIN. IT WOULD JUST STOP WORKING. THE CAR WOULD CRANK INITIALLY AND THEN FAIL TO RECRANK IF TURNED OFF WITHIN A SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME (I.E. DRIVING TO THE STORE). WE WERE TOLD THAT WE NEEDED A NEW FUEL SENSOR. THAT DIDN'T FIX THE PROBLEM. WE THEN HAD THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER REPLACED. THAT DIDN'T FIX IT. YESTERDAY, WHILE DRIVING IN AFTERNOON TRAFFIC WITH MY CHILDREN, EVERYTHING ONCE AGAIN SHUT OFF. I BARELY MANAGED TO MAKE IT TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. I CAN NOT EVEN COUNT THE NUMBER OF TIMES IN THE PAST 3 YEARS THAT I HAVE PULLED OUT INTO AN INTERSECTION ONLY TO HAVE MY ACCELERATOR NOT WORK. IT HAS PROGRESSIVELY GOTTEN MORE EXTREME. TODAY I FOUND OUT ABOUT RECALL THAT TOOK PLACE FOR THE SAME MODEL/YEAR, BUT ACCORDING TO THE FORD PEOPLE, MY VEHICLE DIDN'T QUALIFY. *TR

I really love this truck! I chose the gas option over diesel and I have to say, the V-8 engine is really powerful and impressive. I don't pay too much attention to gas mileage, but it seems to be decent for the size and power of the vehicle. It's a beast of a vehicle that can really move! The truck maneuvers really well and has a smooth ride. Overall, I think it's a great vehicle to drive. I actually prefer driving it over my 350z. It's not too difficult to find parking and I can fit it into any spot that my Chevy truck can fit into.
-
I'm a mother of 4 small children. I have an expedition also but it just is not big enough for traveling with our two dogs. The Excursion fits all of us plus grandma and the dogs in the very back and bags in Thule box the roof. Lots Of Room for Everyone. YA! YA!
-
Last weekend, my family of 5 and our dog went on a 1,500 mile trip. We had an extremely comfortable ride and got 15.5 mpg from the big V-10. By the way, I think the 2005 model is superior. Ford finally dialed it in that year. The climate controls, entertainment, ride, and dependability have all been excellent. I think this one is a keeper!
-
The vehicle offers exceptional value for money. It has a commanding presence on the road and is capable of getting you out of tricky situations when necessary. The fuel economy is better than expected, and it handles tight turns with ease. While the accelerator may take some getting used to, the shifting points make navigating high traffic areas a breeze. I had the opportunity to try both engines, the V10 and the Diesel, and my favorite by far is the diesel.
-
In 2003, I was uncertain about making the jump to an Excursion, so I purchased a comparable Expedition. This year, I was fortunate enough to find an Excursion that was at least comparable to my Expedition. The first thing I noticed was the increased interior room, and the seat configuration made sense. The steering is tighter, which I suspect is due to the different suspension, but I like the solid feel. Although acceleration feels sluggish at first, after a while, you adapt to the diesel performance. When more power is needed, it only requires a deeper push of the accelerator.

I recently purchased a brand new Excursion diesel, but unfortunately, I have experienced some issues with it. The transmission went out before 8000 miles, but thankfully, the warranty covered the cost of a new transmission replacement. Additionally, I had some power steering and brake problems, and had to replace the radio and DVD player. Although it took over 2 months to fix the radio and two weeks to fix the transmission, I am grateful that these issues were resolved. However, I am currently experiencing some problems with the heater not working. Despite these challenges, I am hopeful that the car will be fully functional soon. While the trade-in value may not be ideal, I am still glad to have made this purchase. Although I have had some issues with Ford service, I am confident that they will continue to work with me to resolve any future problems.
