The third generation of the BMW 3 Series range of compact executive cars is designated under the model code E36, and was produced by the German automaker BMW from 1990 to 2000. The initial models were of the four-door sedan body style, followed by the coupé, convertible, wagon ("Touring"), and eventually hatchback ("Compact").

The E36 was the first 3 Series to be offered in a hatchback body style. It was also the first 3 Series to be available with a six-speed manual transmission (in the 1996 M3), a five-speed automatic transmission, and a four-cylinder diesel engine. The multi-link rear suspension was also a significant upgrade as compared to the previous generations of the 3 Series. All-wheel drive was not available for the E36, unlike the previous (E30) and successive (E46) generations.

The E36 was named in Car and Driver magazine's 10Best list for every year it was on sale.

Following the introduction of its successor, the E46 3 Series in 1998, the E36 began to be phased out and was eventually replaced in 1999.

Common 2011 Bmw 323i problems

The BMW 323i 2011 is a compact car with a powerful 3.0L inline-6 engine that offers great performance, but like any vehicle, it has some common problems that owners have reported.

  • Faulty Exhaust-Side Hydraulic Valve Lifters (HVA): This problem can cause a ticking noise after the engine is warmed up in some 2006-2008 models. The noise may temporarily disappear after a long highway drive or switching to a different type of engine. BMW has issued a service bulletin (SIB) recommending the replacement of the 12 exhaust side lifters with updated parts, which could cost between $1,200 and $2,000. In some cases, the cylinder head also had to be replaced to completely resolve the problem.
  • Failed Electric Water Pump: This issue can cause overheating and may be accompanied by the radiator fan staying on at high speed for a long time. It's essential to address this problem as soon as possible, as overheating can lead to more engine problems down the road. The repair could cost between $800 for a water pump only and $1,200-$1,800 with the thermostat.
  • Oil Leaks: Oil leaks are common in the 323i 2011, with the most frequently reported sources being the valve cover gasket and the oil filter housing gasket. These repairs can cost between $550-700 and $370-$600, respectively. Transmission pan and the connector sleeve may also leak.
  • Failed Ignition Coil: This problem can cause the engine to misfire and run rough. Ignition coil replacement is not very expensive, but it's still an additional cost to consider.
  • Engine Oil Leaks: This is a significant issue in the 3 Series, with gaskets on the oil pan failing as the car ages. Replacing the gasket can cost over $2,000 at a dealership.
  • Push Button Start Failures: This issue can occur around 50,000 miles, with the starter motor being the source of the problem. Replacing the starter motor costs about $550.
  • Faulty Fuel Level Sensors: This problem can show up around 40,000 miles, leading to inaccurate fuel readings. Fixing the sensor costs about $300.
  • Recalls: There are nine recalls for the 3 Series, with the most serious one being on ventilation valves, which increase the risk of a fire.

When considering purchasing a BMW 323i 2011, it's crucial to be aware of these common problems and factor in the potential repair costs. However, many owners have reported positive experiences with the car, praising its great steering, performance, and luxurious interior.
