1998 Mercury Mystique problems
The Ford Mondeo I (first generation) is a mid-size car that was produced by Ford, beginning on 23 November 1992, with sales beginning on 22 March 1993. It is also known as the Mk I Mondeo; the 1996 facelift versions are usually designated Mk II. Available as a four-door saloon, a five-door hatchback, and a five-door estate, all models for the European market were produced at Ford's plant in the Belgian city of Genk. In December 1992, Autocar published a section on the Mondeo, and how it would conquer rivals.
Intended as a world car, it replaced the Ford Sierra in Europe, the Ford Telstar in a large portion of Asia and other markets, while the Ford Contour and Mercury Mystique replaced the Ford Tempo and Mercury Topaz in North America. Despite being billed as a world car, the only external items the Mondeo shared initially with the Contour were the windscreen, front windows, front mirrors and door handles. Thus, the CDW27 project turned out not to be a true world car in the sense that the original Ford Focus and newer Fords developed under the "One Ford" policy turned out to be. The first generation Mondeo was replaced in 2000, by the larger second generation; in the United States and Canada, the Contour/Mystique were replaced initially by the Focus and later the Fusion.
Design and development
Mk I
Instigated in 1986 (just before its Sierra predecessor received a major facelift), the design of the car cost Ford US$6 billion. It was one of the most expensive new-car programmes ever. The Mondeo was significant as its design and marketing were shared between Ford USA in Dearborn and Ford of Europe. Its codename while under development reflected thus: CDW27 signified that it straddled the C and D size classes and was a "world car". The head of the Mondeo project was John Oldfield, headquartered at Ford Dunton in Essex.
A large proportion of the high development cost was due to the Mondeo being a completely new design, sharing very little, if anything, with the Ford Sierra. Unlike the Sierra, the Mondeo is front-wheel drive in its most common form, with a rarer four-wheel drive version available on the Mk I car only. Over-optimistically, the floor pan was designed to accept virtually any conceivable drivetrain, from a transverse inline-four engine to a longitudinal V-8. This resulted in a hugely intrusive and mostly disused bellhousing cover and transmission tunnel. Resultingly the front interior, especially the footwells, feels more cramped than would be expected from a vehicle of this size. The Mondeo featured new manual and automatic transmissions and sophisticated suspension design, which give it class-leading handling and ride qualities, and subframes front and rear to give it executive car refinement. The automatic transmission featured electronic control with sport and economy modes plus switchable overdrive. The program manager from 1988, and throughout its early development, was David Price.
By 1989, Ford had confirmed that it would be launching an all-new front-wheel drive car to replace the Sierra within the next four years, although it had not yet decided whether the Sierra name would continue or be replaced, with some subsequent reports even hinting that the Cortina name could make a comeback, having been axed in 1982 when replaced by the Sierra. Several prototypes were tested that year, but the launch of the Nissan Primera in 1990 prompted Ford to make a number of major alterations to the final product, as it saw the new competitor from Nissan to be the benchmark car in this sector, having previously identified the Honda Accord as the class leader.
The car was launched in the midst of turbulent times at Ford of Europe, when the division was haemorrhaging hundreds of millions of dollars, and had gained a reputation in the motoring press for selling products which had been designed by accountants rather than engineers. The fifth-generation Escort and third-generation Orion of 1990 was the zenith of this cost-cutting/high-price philosophy, which was by then beginning to backfire on Ford, with the cars being slated for their substandard ride and handling, though a facelift in 1992 had seen things improve a little. The Sierra had sold well, but not as well as the all-conquering Cortina before it, and in Britain, it had been overtaken in the sales charts by the newer Vauxhall Cavalier. Previously loyal customers were already turning to rival European and Japanese products, and by the time of the Mondeo's launch, the future of Europe as a Ford manufacturing base was hanging in the balance. The new car had to be good, and it had to sell. It was unveiled to the public on 23 November 1992, although sales would not begin for another four months. At this stage, Ford confirmed that the new car would feature a completely new name and would be called the Mondeo.
Safety was a high priority in the Mondeo design, with a driver's side airbag (it was the first-ever car sold from the beginning with a driver's airbag in all of its versions, which helped it achieve the European Car of the Year title for 1994), side-impact bars, seat belt pretensioners, and antilock braking systems (higher models) as standard features. Other features for its year included adaptive damping, self-leveling suspension (top estate models), traction control (V6 and 4WD versions), and heated front windscreen, branded Quickclear.
The interiors were usually well-appointed, featuring velour trim, an arm rest with CD and tape storage, central locking (frequently remote), power windows (all round on higher models), power mirrors, illuminated entry, flat-folding rear seats, etc. Higher-specification models had leather seats, trip computers, electric sunroof, CD changer, and alloy wheels.
During its development, Ford used the 1986 Honda Accord and in the later stages the 1990 Nissan Primera as the class benchmarks that the CDW27 had to beat.

Common 1998 Mercury Mystique problems
Sure, I'd be happy to help you with that! Here are some common problems with the Mercury Mystique 1998, based on complaints from owners of this car:
- Engine Oil Sludge: Many owners of the Mercury Mystique 1998 have reported issues with engine oil sludge. This problem is usually caused by a lack of regular oil changes or using the wrong type of oil. Over time, the oil can become contaminated with dirt and debris, which can lead to the formation of sludge in the engine. This can cause a number of issues, including reduced engine performance, increased fuel consumption, and even engine failure.
- Transmission Problems: Another common issue with the Mercury Mystique 1998 is transmission problems. Some owners have reported issues with the transmission slipping, jerking, or failing to shift properly. These issues can be caused by a variety of factors, including low transmission fluid levels, worn-out clutch plates, or a faulty transmission solenoid. In some cases, the transmission may need to be replaced entirely, which can be a costly repair.
- Faulty Coolant Temperature Sensor: The coolant temperature sensor in the Mercury Mystique 1998 is prone to failure. When this sensor fails, it can cause a number of issues, including a rough idle, poor fuel economy, and even engine damage. If the sensor is not replaced, it can cause the engine to overheat, which can lead to serious engine damage.
- Power Steering Problems: Some owners of the Mercury Mystique 1998 have reported issues with the power steering system. These issues can include a whining or groaning noise when turning the steering wheel, or a loss of power steering assist. These issues can be caused by a leak in the power steering system, a faulty power steering pump, or a worn-out power steering rack.
- Faulty Ignition Coils: The ignition coils in the Mercury Mystique 1998 are also prone to failure. When this happens, it can cause a number of issues, including a misfire, a rough idle, and reduced engine performance. In some cases, the ignition coils may need to be replaced in order to resolve these issues.
- Faulty Oxygen Sensor: The oxygen sensor in the Mercury Mystique 1998 is another component that is prone to failure. When this sensor fails, it can cause a number of issues, including a decrease in fuel efficiency, a decrease in engine performance, and even engine damage. If the sensor is not replaced, it can cause the engine to run too rich or too lean, which can lead to long-term engine damage.
- Faulty Air Conditioning Compressor: The air conditioning compressor in the Mercury Mystique 1998 is also prone to failure. When this happens, it can cause a number of issues, including a lack of cool air, a loud noise when the air conditioning is turned on, or a complete failure of the air conditioning system. In some cases, the compressor may need to be replaced in order to resolve these issues.
These are just a few of the common problems with the Mercury Mystique 1998. If you own one of these cars, it's important to stay on top of regular maintenance and address any issues as soon as they arise in order to avoid more serious problems down the road.
Is the Mercury Mystique the same as the Ford?
Since its introduction in 1995, the Mystique has been Mercury's counterpart to the Ford Contour. Based on the same platform, the Mercury has differentiated itself by having different styling and trim packages. But for all intents and purposes, the Contour and Mystique were the same car.
What year was the Mercury Mystique made?
The Contour and Mystique, sold from 1995-2000, were, in the U.S., offered only in a four-door sedan version.
Was Mercury nicer than Ford?
What is the difference between a Ford and a Mercury? Most Mercury models were higher trim, than Ford models, but lower trim, than Lincoln. Mercury had more standard features, than Ford and was priced higher than Ford, but less than Lincoln.
Why did Ford stop Mercury?
Ford completely phased out the Mercury brand in 2011, as the company refocused its marketing and engineering efforts solely on the Ford and Lincoln brands. “Mercury has been a tremendous line for Ford Motor Company because it filled the niche between our Ford and Lincoln lineups,” said Kreipke.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2008-12-31
- VIN: 1MEFM66LXWK
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: I AM THE 2ND OWNER OF MY 1998 MERCURY MYSTIQUE. I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE IN 2004. IT HAS A COMPUTER DEFECT THAT GIVES A FALSE READING FOR THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. THIS CAR QUALIFIED FOR THE NJ LEMON LAW BECAUSE OF THIS PROBLEM WITH ITS 1ST OWNER. HOWEVER, THAT OWNER WAS TOO KIND TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. THE PREVIOUS OWNER GAVE ME A FILE FILLED WITH SERVICE INFORMATION FROM THE DATE HE PURCHASED THE VEHICLE, BRAND NEW IN DECEMBER 1997. SHORTLY AFTER HIS PURCHASE HE HAD THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALER FOR THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. HE HAD IT BACK A COUPLE MORE TIMES FOR THE SAME THING AND THEY ALWAYS FIXED IT. OBVIOUSLY, THEY PUT A BAND-AID ON A MAJOR DEFECT. I NOTICED THE LIGHT WAS ON WHEN I FIRST PURCHASED THE VEHICLE. THE FORMER OWNER SAID HE HAD IT CHECKED AND WAS TOLD NOT TO PAY ATTENTION TO IT. WELL, SINCE THEN I HAVE BEEN TOLD AT INSPECTION THAT IT HAS TO BE FIXED EVERY TIME. SO IT GOES TO MY MECHANIC WHO WILLS REPAIR/REPLACE THE NECESSARY PARTS PER THAT DAY'S COMPUTER READING. WITHIN A FEW WEEKS (OCCASIONALLY MONTHS) THE LIGHT GOES ON AGAIN. PREVIOUS TO THIS YEARS INSPECTION (DECEMBER 31ST) I HAD MY FRIEND LOOK IT OVER AND HE REPLACED THE VALVE/SENSOR THAT WAS DEFECTED (PER THAT DAYS COMPUTER READING). WELL, RIGHT BEFORE INSPECTION THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WENT BACK ON. AND OF COURSE, SINCE IT WAS ON, IT FAILED AGAIN. I MENTIONED TO THE INSPECTOR THAT IT HAD A HISTORY OF THIS PROBLEM. I ASKED IF THERE WAS ANY RECOURSE AND HE TOLD ME TO LOOK INTO THE NJ WAIVER PROGRAM. I CALLED THE MOTOR VEHICLE COMMISSION TO LEARN ABOUT THE WAIVER PROGRAM. I UNDERSTAND TO BE CONSIDERED, THE REPAIR COST HAS TO BE ABOUT $400 OR MORE. SOME TIME AGO THE REPAIR COSTS LIMIT WAS ABOUT $250 OR MORE. WELL, FOR THE REPAIR I HAD DONE BEFORE THIS LAST INSPECTION, IT COST ME ABOUT $250 AGAIN. I BELIEVE THAT FOR THESE REASONS I SHOULD QUALIFY FOR A VEHICLE WAIVER FOR THE EMISSIONS INSPECTION OF MY VEHICLE. *TR

I've had this car for over 2 years now. I bought it with 20k miles and it now has 50k. It's a fully loaded V6 standard and has only had one problem so far (the control arm needed to be replaced). The car's reliability has exceeded my expectations and I absolutely love its performance and handling. It's hard to find a better used V6 4 door sedan with a stick shift for the money (Audi, BMW or VW would cost at least twice as much). The only downsides are the cheap-looking fake wood on the dashboard, the worn leather on the steering wheel, and the fake leather handbrake boot. Additionally, the engine stalls at revs when shifting. Interestingly enough, in Europe, the Ford Mondeo (which is the same as the Contour/Mystique) was always rated way ahead of the Accords and Camrys in every way.

You'll be pleased to know that this car does a great job on the expressways and performs well under various driving conditions. It gives you a sense of control.

It's great to hear that you find the car fun to drive and that it has great handling and acceleration, especially considering its price. I understand that the gas mileage may not be ideal and that the fifth gear revs pretty high during highway driving, which can add to the fuel economy problem. Additionally, it's a shame that the front cup holders are poorly designed. It's good to know that the only major repair you've had to make was related to the wheel bearing at around 100,000km. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the car!

I think your car is great! It looks cute, drives great, and is very roomy for all your friends.

When you bought this car, it was only one year old and had 30,000 miles on it. It's amazing that it's still running as well as it did 10 years ago! Although you've had to make a few repairs, like the alternator and transmission, it's been a very reliable car for you. It's great to hear that you would buy one again if they were still made!

This is a lovely car, although it may not be the most thrilling. My particular Mystique has a 4 cyl. engine, and I do wish it had a six. However, it has been incredibly dependable and still runs quietly. The fit and finish have held up very well over time. All in all, it's a great family car for those with small children, even if it may not be the most exciting option.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my Mystique. Although I purchased it new, I've had a few issues with it over the years. I've had to deal with several recalls, as well as problems with the AC leaking onto the floorboard and ruining the carpet beneath it. Additionally, I've had issues with sensors and check engine lights. One thing that really bothered me was the plastic headlight covers fogging over, which affected my night vision. I had to pay a local company $150 to repair them, which I think should have been covered by Mercury for safety reasons. Another issue I had was with the grill, which had to be replaced due to pitting. They were supposed to put a silver one on, but ended up putting a smoke color instead because they no longer carried the silver. However, my biggest issue was with the transmission falling apart with only 60,000 miles on it. Overall, I've had some frustrations with my Mystique, but I still enjoy driving it. Thanks for listening to my story!

I purchased my Mystique Sport five years ago when I received my license. At the time, it had around 70k miles and now it has just over 100k. Overall, I have found that you get what you pay for. While it has spent its fair share of time in the shop, I wouldn't rely on it for extended trips over a couple of hours. However, it can be somewhat fun to drive, even though it's not particularly fast. Unfortunately, I have experienced some issues, such as the sunroof leaking directly onto my lap and the overhead cabin lights falling out. Despite these issues, it's not the worst first car, but I am looking to trade up as soon as possible.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my Mystique LS. I was lucky enough to find a used one with only 17K miles and still under warranty. It was loaded with every option except the moonroof, and I only paid $10,300 for it. I now have 40K miles on the car and I'm still very pleased with it. I don't think I could have found a better car for the money!

Hi there! When I first bought my car, it had about 80000 miles on it and I was using it to commute to work and school. Unfortunately, within the first week of owning it, I had to buy a new battery because the car shut off on me while I was driving. Later on, I had to replace the alternator during the summer when the car shut down on me at an intersection (by the way, I was 9 months pregnant with a small child in the back, not the best experience!). Throughout my ownership, I had the routers done, the flywheel and starter replaced, and finally the alternator. In the end, I decided to donate the car because I didn't feel right selling it to someone with so many problems.
