The Hyundai Ioniq 5 (Korean: 현대 아이오닉 5) is a battery electric compact crossover SUV produced by Hyundai since 2021. It is the first product to be marketed under the electric cars-focused Ioniq sub-brand, and the first model developed on the Hyundai Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP).

Overview

The Ioniq 5 was revealed globally on 23 February 2021. Its design was previewed by the Hyundai 45 EV Concept which was presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2019. Both the concept car and the production version are inspired by the original Hyundai Pony, and features the Parametric Pixel design that is applied to the headlights, tail lights, and wheels. The vehicle's clamshell hood spans the entire width to make a sleek look with the 20-inch aerodynamic wheels. The "45" describes both the 45th anniversary of the Pony coupe and the 45-degree angles prominent on the sides of the concept. At the time, Hyundai called the design language "sensuous sportiness" and described the front and rear lights as carrying a "kinetic cube" theme.

The Ioniq 5 was developed under the project code NE as the first vehicle to be based on the E-GMP platform. The dedicated electric vehicle platform enables the vehicle to adopt a fully flat interior floor with a 3-meter long wheelbase. The flat floor allows Hyundai engineers to develop a sliding front central console marketed as 'Universal Island', which is able to slide backwards by 140 mm (5.5 in). The vehicle has a cargo capacity of 531 L (18.8 cu ft) behind the rear seats that can be increased to nearly 1,600 L (56.5 cu ft) with the second row seats folded. The rear legroom space was achieved by making the front seats approximately 30 percent thinner than typical seats.

The dashboard of the Ioniq 5 is made up of two 12 in (300 mm) screens, one for the instrument cluster display and the other for the infotainment system, both under one piece of glass. It is equipped with an optional head-up display with augmented reality support. Many of the interior parts are made from recycled materials, including PET bottles. The Ioniq 5 can be optioned with a single large glass panel roof without any support beams.

The Ioniq 5 also features a front boot (alternatively called a frunk), which has a 57 L (2.01 cu ft) capacity for the RWD version (except North America), while the AWD model and all North American versions have a 24 L (0.848 cu ft) capacity, due to the extra mechanical components underneath to support the front electric motor. It has the ability to charge electrical equipment through the built-in V2L (Vehicle to Load) function. It can supply up to 3.6 kW of power from the port mounted under the rear seats (except Australia) and from another port installed outside. The exterior port is able to supply power even if the vehicle is turned off.

In some markets, the Ioniq 5 is offered with an optional Digital Side Mirror (DSM) which replaces the conventional side mirrors with cameras and OLED screens.

Common 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 problems

The 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. One of the main issues is related to the in-car electronics, particularly the infotainment system (audio, GPS, phone), rear entertainment system, backup or other camera/sensors, and head-up display. Owners have reported issues such as the GPS stopping working along with HDA and Date Time, which started around 3000 miles and was resolved by a manual reset of software by the dealer. The in-car navigation is also reported to be nearly useless for road trip planning, as it does not provide essential features like information on the state of charge, length of time to charge, reliable charging locations, and other essential features that other automaker systems have.

Another problem reported by owners is related to the car not accelerating properly in ECO mode. One owner reported that there was about a 2-second delay, and the car would only gradually accelerate. This issue was resolved by a Tech Update, which was available on the IONIC. GUY YouTube site, and the owner could go to a NH Dealer to get the software update. However, there are no NH dealers that sell the IONIQ 5 or Service any warranty replacement parts, so this may be a problem for some owners.

Screen freezing up for the Audio portion of the screens that you can see on the second monitor is another issue reported by owners. One owner reported that they could not change the station for the 3 plus weeks, until they had the Head unit replaced by an certified Hyundai Dealer in MA, as there are no Hyundai EC dealerships in New Hampshire.

In addition to these issues, there have been reports of panel gaps or other complaints, but these seem to be less common than the issues related to in-car electronics and acceleration.

It is important to note that these issues are based on complaints from owners and may not be representative of all 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 vehicles. However, these issues may be worth considering when purchasing a new vehicle.

Are there any recalls on the 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5?

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2023 IONIQ 5, IONIQ 6, and Genesis GV60 vehicles. The rear inner driveshaft may have been improperly heat-treated, allowing it to break under load and resulting in a loss of drive power. Tip: Recalls don't affect every vehicle of the same year, make and model.

What are the downsides of Ioniq 5?

A used Hyundai Ioniq 5 is a no-brainer if you are looking for an affordable EV. It's got a great price, a formidable range and charging speed, and an industry-leading feature set. The only major downside is that base models may lack the little details, and availability can be slim.

Why is Ioniq 5 discontinued?

Is the IONIQ still being built? No, in July 2022, production of the original Hyundai IONIQ ended at the Ulsan plant in South Korea. Why was the original IONIQ discontinued? The worldwide discontinuation of IONIQ represents a long-planned decision by Hyundai to meet changing consumer demands in the automotive sector.

What are changes in 2023 Ioniq 5?

All-wheel-drive models now get an EPA-estimated 266 miles of range, up from last year's 256-mile rating. They also now have slightly higher MPGe ratings. A battery heating system and preconditioning function are now standard on all models.

LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-24
  • VIN: KM8KMDAF3PU
  • Components: LANE DEPARTURE
  • Summary: Vehicle disengaged lane keeping ADAS without warning multiple times. Sometimes a warning beep would occur, but often on turns it would suddenly disengage without a beep or any other warning method causing me to have to yank the wheel to complete the turn correctly and avoid running off the road. This has caused me to not trust the system and fight the lane keeping feature just in case it suddenly turns off and goes into the other lane before I have a chance to correct the steering.

TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-09
  • VIN: KM8KR4AE0PU
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: There seems to be a wide spread issue with the foam on the interior of Ionic 5 tires, Michelin 235/55/R 19. The foam dislodges from the interior of the tire and causes severe vibrations when driving at over 60 mph. The issue causes the tires to be unbalanced and can cause damage to the car. Wondering why Michelin doesn't address this issue and issue a fix other than stripping the tires of foam. My Hyundai dealer told me this is an on going issue and they have received no guidance from Michelin or Hyundai.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-09
  • VIN: KM8KRDAF5PU
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: During normal driving with car charged to 95%, I heard a pop coming from the rear of the vehicle and saw an immediate warning about electrical system malfunction. I drove the car for less than a quarter mile and pulled over. I then received instruction on the dash to power off the car which I did. The car was towed to the dealership who diagnosed an ICCU failure. It had been to the dealer twice for safety recall notices related to the same issue. This is a known problem with this type of vehicle. Awaiting replacement parts. This problem will cause complete loss of power to the vehicle. Fortunately I was able to pull over and park in a safe space before this happened. Obviously complete loss of power is a potential safety issue, thankfully systems alerted me to the problem. I have no idea if the replacement part will be of the same lot that failed in the first place.

STRUCTURE,WHEELS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-27
  • VIN: KM8KMDAF6PU
  • Components: STRUCTURE,WHEELS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: When approaching 60 mph the vehicle starts to vibrate / shake. Upon a dealer's recommendation they have rotated, aligned, balanced and changed the tires and repaired the rear rims, but they did not help. (Just cost us money). I contacted Hyundai and they suggested that I go to another dealer, which I did. They said it was a known issue and the there is nothing they can do about it. I can't say much about the safety aspect, but I'm sure it's not good when a car vibrates and no on seems to know why ...

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-21
  • VIN: KM8KNDAF3PU
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: It is regularly very difficult to see the digital speedometer on this car because it is blocked by the steering wheel. There is almost no comfortable position to place the seat and steering wheel for someone of my height 6ft where the speedometer is visible. Please make Hyundai move the speedometer to the middle of the screen (not outside edges where it is blocked by the steering wheel)!! I have contacted them and they have essentially gaslit/ignored me about this.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-29
  • VIN: KM8KNDAFXPU
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Our all-electric AWD Hyundai Ioniq 5 has an issue where the rear motor electric oil pump (EOP) overheats and ceases to function when the problem occurs, which disables the rear motor and effectively causes the car to become a front-wheel drive vehicle with a "hesitation" in the acceleration. This problem only occurs after a long time of high-speed driving and typically on a warm day (upwards of 70-80 degrees F). When the problem occurs, the rear motor ceases to function at all and only the front motor operates to power the vehicle forward. The acceleration is also impacted, such that when the accelerator is pushed, the car "hesitates" for 1-3 seconds before the front motor takes over the demand for power and "lurches" the car forward in a jerky motion. The symptom will last as long as the car is in an overheated state. However, if you pull the car over and let it rest for a period of time (undetermined), the rear motor will again operate normally until it overheats again. For us, this occurred once on a very hot day traveling approximately 50-60 miles on interstate travelling at speeds over 70 MPH. On another occurrence, it happened after driving the car about 200 miles (stopping for a lunch break in the middle), for about 4 hours. When this problem occurs in other cars equipped with RWD only, they lose all forward power in the car and coast to a stop even when the battery still has a charge. We've taken it to our local dealership for repair on Sept 12, 2024 (McGee Hyundai of Barre, VT) and they claim that there is nothing wrong with the vehicle. After researching the topic, I've determined it is the failing rear EOP must be replaced [XXX] and [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-09
  • VIN: KM8KM4AE7PU
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: On [XXX], while driving north on [XXX] to Michigan, I stopped in Carmel, IN to charge my 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 SE RWD vehicle. After charging, I reached 45mph and immediately experienced violent shaking of the steering wheel and seats. The vehicle was immediately driven to Hyundai of Carmel for inspection and possible maintenance. A service technician drove the vehicle and experienced the issue, but could not recommend a solution. The vehicle was driven back to Louisville, KY (home location) and taken to a Tire Discounters the following morning. At Tire Discounters, a technician drove the vehicle and experienced the same behavior, but could not provide a solution. Numerous trips to multiple Hyundai dealership service departments and tire service centers (Big-O-Tires and Tire Discounters) resulted in no solutions. After extensive research, a potential solution was identified by the vehicle owner relating to the noise-isolating foam located on the inside wall of the tires. There are numerous reviews on Michelin's website documenting this specific issue with the tires. A call to Michelin costumer service successfully concluded with a warranty claims number. However, none of the previously mentioned tire service locations would investigate because the vehicle only had 6,400 miles and the Hyundai dealership service departments refused to address the problem. Ultimately, Pep Boys accepted the Michelin warranty claim and found that three of four tires (Michelin Primacy 235/55R19 101H) that came as part of the original vehicle purchase had the internal isolation foam disconnect from the tire belt and gather in a central location inside the tire. There has been no evidence of notices or information from Michelin to dealerships or service departments regarding this issue and the potential for dangerous driving conditions or damage. SUSPENSION,WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-09
  • VIN: KM8KM4AE7PU
  • Components: SUSPENSION,WHEELS
  • Summary: Due to an extreme failure in the integrity of the OEM tires, the vehicle experienced violent shaking a speeds in excess of 45mph. The shaking resulted from the extreme unbalanced nature of the wheels due to displaced noise-isolating foam inside the tire. As these tires were installed when the new vehicle was purchased, there is a significant issue with the fact that none of the dealership service stations visited to address this issue could identify a problem. Additionally, all three dealerships refused to work on the tires or help address an obvious problem for a vehicle with only 6,400 miles. While the warranty for the tires lies with Michelin, the complete lack of response or care by Hyundai representatives on a component with such a high failure rate is extremely unnerving and problematic.

TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-24
  • VIN: KM8KNDAF0PU
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: Michelin Primacy AS 235/55 R19 - OEM tires on Hyundai Ioniq5 acquired new in September 2023 - mileage at the time of incident 10,800 miles Front tire started went off balance causing steering wheel vibrations and shaking that increased with speed - car was not drivable above 55MPH due to excessive shaking and vibrations of steering wheel - this presents safety concern as it may lead to loss of control and excessive wear and tear on other suspension / wheel components. I took the vehicle to a local tire shop (Town Fair Tire in Norwalk CT - authorized dealer of Michelin tires) - got wheels rotated, balances and alignment adjusted. The issue persisted - on the second visit tire shop dismounted one of the tires and discovered internal foam band unglued and clumped on one side of the tire causing off-balance. The shop recommended removal of the foam material and rebalancing of the tire to correct the manufacturing error.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-28
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: KM8KRDAF5PU
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: Incident occurred when head-in parking in a space pointed into an stores exterior wall. There were no parking/wheel stops, just pavement then wall. No adjacent cars. I was decelerating with foot completely off accelerator and over the brake pedal. The car is an EV and was in 3rd level of regenerative braking, slowing down quickly. As I completed the turn into the space and began straitening the wheel, the car suddenly and rapidly accelerated and crashed into the wall. The only likely explanation I have is that I inadvertently pressed the Driving Assist button with my right thumb or hand while turning the steering wheel, which would have activated Smart Cruise Control, and, if the necessary conditions were met, set the minimum speed to 30 km/hr. The car manual states: "If your vehicle speed is between 0 - 20 mph (0 - 30 km/h) when you press the Driving Assist ( ) button, the Smart Cruise Control speed will be set to 20 mph (30km/h)." The Foward Collision-Avoidance Assist was set to Active Assist, which should have applied the brake to stop from colliding with the wall, but instead the car accelerated. (Note, the parking assist feature does not usually recognize head-in parking.) The car has two Driving Assist settings: Based on Drive Mode and Based on Driving Style. If the latter is selected, three additional features are set on sliding scales: Distance (close to far), Acceleration (slow to fast), Response Speed (slow to quick). These three settings are adjusted automatically based on the car's interpretation of the driver's driving style, or they can be manually overriden. I have never changed these settings. Post-incident I checked the setting and it was set to Based on Driving Style with Acceleration=Fast. Concerns: Is Driving Assist to easy to inadvertently activate? Should Driving Assist not activate at very slow speeds and not auto-set to 30k/h? Why did Forward Collision-Avoidance not activate? Drive Assist should not default to Based on Driving Style.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-04
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: KM8KRDAFXPU
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Charging port burned during DC fast charging session, resulting in melted charging pin. Unable to insert CCS connecter due to melted pin obstructing insertion. Further damage to electrical systems unknown. No warning signs shown aside from vehicle charging session ending. Lack of safety systems to prevent melting/burning of charging pins leaves potential for general vehicle fire, battery fire, etc. Dealer has had car in possession for over 10 days with no update. Corporate contact has been unresponsive.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-11
  • VIN: KM8KRDAF3PU
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I have had my 2023 Ioniq 5 for 13-months. I have had two safety recall services performed - I understand those were ICCU software related. On [XXX] my car sounded a sudden alarm and a warning appeared saying to "STOP and Check Power Supply." I was not able to immediately pull over but found the ability to pull over within about 1/4 mile, the vehicle seemed to be losing power. It was frightening as there were many pedestrians and cyclists and I had no idea what was happening. The car was towed through AAA - we had difficulty getting it onto the truck as there was very little power and almost no power steering. The vehicle is now at the Rowe Hyundai dealership in Westbrook, ME. I was told the ICCU would need to be replaced as well as some kind of fuse. I am not sure I will feel safe driving this vehicle even after it is repaired. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-10
  • VIN: KM8KRDAF8PU
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: Failure of the Vehicle Power Supply system. ICCU failure. Car was alerting and would not go over 24mph. This is the result of a recall that I had already brought in the vehicle for in April, but they only performed a Pass/Fail test and at the time it "passed" so they didn't replace the ICCU and fuse that is required to be replaced. Two months later the car died, had to be towed and now has been at the dealership for two weeks already - 17waiting for the parts to come in. This is ridiculous because Hyundai is aware of this problem and is not fixing the issue, merely kicking the can down the road and then stranding owners for weeks without their vehicles. Unacceptable.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-07
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: KM8KRDAF2PU
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: When parking in a supermarket parking lot I slowly approached the space while braking. As I turned left into the space and released the brake pedal to allow the car to slowly roll into the space as I always do, the car surged as if someone floored the accelerator. I veered left to avoid a head on collision with the parked car facing me and went diagonally between the right front fender of that car and the left front fender of the car parked in the space to my left. I sideswiped both sides of my car and damaged the front fenders of both cars before I was able to apply the brake and bring the car to a stop. There was a mother with her two young children loading groceries into the car in front of me. Fortunately I avoided hitting anyone, but the witnessed the accident. I was in shock. My car suffered $25 in damages. There is absolutely no way I accidentally applied the accelerator, and if I had I would never have floored it! The car malfunctioned. I reported this incident to Hyundai also. They supposedly were sending someone to inspect the car at the auto body repair center.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-15
  • VIN: KM8KRDAFXPU
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Latest recall had been applied, 2 weeks later a dead 12V. New one put in and 4 weeks later a pop and an immediate pull over vehicle charging system needs inspected. ICCU failure.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-20
  • VIN: KM8KNDAF0PU
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Vehicle's charging port appears to be overheating to the point that thermal throttling is occurring when attempting to charge. This issue first occurred in mid-May of 2024. Vehicle charged as normal before then. Vehicle was serviced by dealership for this issue on 05/29/2024. A software update was applied that did not solve the problem. In an attempt to find updates on this problem, I contacted Hyundai Customer Care by phone on 05/30/2024. Hyundai Customer Care agent read a scripted response that was first released to the public in 20203 and advised to wait for an unknown amount of time for an unknown fix which may or may not come to pass. Hyundai Customer Care had no updates more recent than the 2023 release from which the Customer Care agent read. This appears to be a known issue with no actual fix available to the customer and no ETA on when such a fix might be released.

Negative 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 car reviews

  1. Wayne Hintz 2025-01-05

Let me start by saying that we absolutely love the exterior aesthetic of this car, and have had no issues with anything on the electric side. We have the extended range AWD version, and the transition to electric, with all of the onboard support systems for managing, has been a breeze. Kudos to Hyundai for that! However, I have had some negative experiences with this car. Firstly, unfortunately, Hyundai has turned its back on the car industry's century of cockpit evolution for drivers, and instead opted for a gadget-forward, menu-centric, digital interface. As a driver with 30 years of experience in dozens of cars, who frequently drives rental cars and operates complex heavy equipment, I can usually adapt to reasonable differences. However, with this vehicle, I waste a lot of unnecessary time and become frustrated with the controls. This includes having to pull over and look things up once in a while - for things that should be intuitive and not buried within menus or touch screens. The acute loss of tactile dials and buttons, in exchange for confusing icons and (surprisingly insensitive) touch-screens, has a very real and negative impact on the ease of everyday driving. Secondly, I had to buy it without seeing a live version, and my first warning is that its hot-hatch look is very deceiving. It's a bulky beast that, other than the expected e-acceleration, feels like driving a minivan. Even in sport mode, it is a luxurious ride that belies the look of the car. Cornering at speed is a disappointing experience, with the chassis feeling strangely disconnected from the road. Thirdly, due to all of this bulk, there is little chance of safely backing up without the camera - and in a Canadian winter, the camera is always road-grimed. The option of looking through the back hatch is similarly obscured. Why not use the rear wiper, you say? Unfortunately, it doesn't come with one of those for some completely unknown reason...I've read some thoughts that the designers didn't feel it needed one given the streamlining or some such. However, I strongly disagree with this based on my real-world winter driving experience (and even just on dirt roads). It definitely should not have been allowed on the market without a wiper. In addition to the missing wiper, it is ridiculous to sell an SUV without roof rails or other rack mounts. The exposed charge hatch that collects snow and ice if you charge outdoors, and a spoiler that collects snow and ice, make winters a real challenge. These issues have nothing to do with just battery limitations, which I was expecting. It's the lack of respect for a long history of practical industry experience on such basic things. Similarly, the touch-sensitive screens and

Car has 30k miles on it, I had it parked at work turned it on and the console said 12v battery is weak, then the car just died. Could not turn it on no matter what I did. Called the dealer and he said it needs to be towed. I read reviews and lot of people have had this issue where the 12v dies without warning and so does the car. Second issue is the battery/car driving range in winter. I am barely getting 150 miles while I was getting 250 miles in summer on a full charge.

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share my experience with the Ioniq 5 limited that I purchased last Thursday, 3/24. Unfortunately, I have encountered an issue while driving between 60-70 mph where the steering wheel shakes excessively. I brought it into the dealer on Monday 3/28 and it has been there for 5 days and counting. Although this has been a disappointing experience, I am confident that the dealer will resolve the issue soon. I would recommend test driving the car multiple times at highway speeds before making a purchase. Thank you for your time.

This EV model may not be to everyone's taste, but it offers great value for money. However, if you are looking for a more luxurious option, a Mercedes Benz EV may be a better fit for you. It's important to consider your personal preferences and priorities when making a purchase decision.

The car is great! It's so much fun to learn about all the technology that makes this car an adventure in high tech. Once I set up the charger in my garage, I'll be even happier. Unfortunately, the public charging situation doesn't work for me. It takes too long and I don't want to hunt for open spots. But overall, the car is really nice.

If you're looking for an affordable electric car, I highly recommend the Hyundai IONIQ 5. I test drove several options, including electric BMWs, Mercedes, and Audis, but ultimately found the IONIQ 5 to be the best choice for me. Plus, it's available at half the price of those other models! Don't hesitate to check it out.

The car has two major selling points: its impressive range of 266 miles and its quick recharge speed of over 200kW. Unfortunately, the model we originally wanted - the IONIQ 5 SEL RWD - was not available in dealerships. However, we were able to lease the SEL AWD from San Leandro Hyundai/Kia at a great price. The car's light interior is perfect for heat management and the design is sleek and uncluttered. While the basic driving experience is straightforward, accessing the i-pedal ECO mode for one-pedal driving can be a bit challenging depending on the car's current state. Overall, driving the IONIQ 5 feels quite luxurious, especially after driving just the Chevy Bolt for over 3 years.

After owning a Chevy Volt for several years, I decided to go all-in on a long range EV. The ioniq 5 is an efficient, fast, roomy and smooth car. I even put a 2
