2015 Fiat 500e problems

The Fiat New 500 (project 332), also known as the Fiat 500e is a battery-electric car by Italian manufacturer Fiat. The New 500 city car is manufactured at the Mirafiori plant in Turin and is sold alongside the conventionally-powered Fiat 500 (2007), which continues to be manufactured in Tychy, Poland. That 2007 car was used as the basis of a previous BEV Fiat 500e (2013), which was sold only in the United States and had a much smaller range than the New 500. It was scheduled to be launched at the Geneva Motor Show but that event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was unveiled on 4 March 2020 in Milan.

The New 500 has a 320 km (199 mi) range on the European WLTP combined test, and achieves 400 km (249 mi) on that test's urban cycle, which is generally favourable toward electric vehicles (EVs). The car is powered by an 87 kW (116 hp) electric motor, fed by a 42 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Fiat 500e is the name of the battery EV made by Fiat from 2013 to 2019. It was an EV conversion of the internal combustion 500 of 2007, and was sold in the U.S. states of California and Oregon as a compliance car to earn clean energy credits (the Renewable Energy Certificate) for Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA). The New 500 produced since 2020 is the dedicated BEV model sold in Europe, and is often referred to colloquially as the 500e, among other names.

Overview

Sergio Marchionne called for FCA to pivot towards electric and hybrid automobiles starting in 2018, including an all-new electric 500 by 2020. Previously, FCA had assembled the 500e, a BEV derived from the 2007 Fiat 500 but limited to the United States market only, at its Toluca Car Assembly plant in Mexico from December 2012 to June 2019. FCA showed the Fiat Centoventi concept at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2019; the Centoventi concept previewed what automotive industry believed to be a future BEV version of the Fiat Panda, which in turn was expected to form the basis for the next electric Fiat 500. The concept Centoventi showcased a modular battery concept, allowing an extended range using dealer-installed battery packs.

In July 2019, FCA announced plans to invest €700 million in its Mirafiori plant to build a new production line devoted to its first BEV marketed in Europe, tentatively named the 500 BEV, with production to start in the second quarter of 2020. The new line was planned to have an annual production capacity of 80,000 500 BEVs. FCA invested another €50 million to build a battery production line at Mirafiori in October 2019. Camouflaged prototypes of the 500 BEV were photographed while undergoing tests in December 2019.

The public unveiling amid the COVID-19 pandemic on 4 March 2020, previously scheduled for Geneva, was led by FCA Chief Marketing Officer Olivier François, who said they held the event in Milan "to show that FCA stands close to Milan and to Italy." The New 500 sits on a totally new platform and is slightly bigger than its 2007 predecessor. Compared to the earlier 500, the New 500 is 6 cm (2.4 in) longer, 6 cm (2.4 in) wider, and 4 cm (1.6 in) taller, with a 2 cm (0.79 in) increase in wheelbase. The older 500 is equipped with an internal-combustion engine or a mild hybrid drivetrain and will remain on sale.

Common 2015 Fiat 500e problems

The Fiat 500e, a compact electric vehicle introduced in 2015, has been praised for its fun-to-drive performance, impressive fuel efficiency, and eco-friendly features. However, like any other vehicle, it has its share of issues and problems reported by its owners. Here are some of the common problems with the Fiat 500e 2015 based on the complaints and feedback from its owners:

  • Limited Range: One of the most common complaints about the Fiat 500e is its limited range, which is typical of electric vehicles in its class. The car's range is around 80-100 miles on a single charge, depending on driving conditions and usage of accessories like air conditioning or heating. This can be a problem for those who have long commutes or need to travel frequently outside of the city.
  • Charging Issues: Some owners have reported issues with the car's charging system, including slow charging times and problems with the charging cable.
  • Battery Issues: Another common issue with the Fiat 500e is related to its battery, which can degrade over time and reduce the car's range and performance. While the car's battery is covered by a warranty, some owners have reported experiencing battery-related issues outside of the warranty period.
  • Interior Quality: Some owners have reported issues with the car's interior quality, including cheap-feeling materials, rattling noises, and problems with the infotainment system. The car's small size and cramped interior can also be a problem for some drivers, especially those who need to transport multiple passengers or cargo.
  • Repair and Maintenance: As a discontinued model, finding parts and getting repairs for the Fiat 500e can be a challenge, especially in areas where there are few Fiat dealerships or service centers. This can be a concern for those who plan to keep their car for a long time or need to rely on it for daily transportation.

In summary, while the Fiat 500e is a fun and eco-friendly car, it has some common issues and problems that potential buyers should be aware of. These include limited range, charging issues, battery problems, interior quality, and repair and maintenance challenges. By understanding these issues, buyers can make an informed decision about whether the Fiat 500e is the right car for them.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-08-15
  • VIN: 3C3CFFGE8FT
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: THE 2013-2017 FIAT 500E CHARGER PORT [THE PART MOUNTED ON THE VEHICLE] IS A WEAK PLASTIC PART THAT BREAKS EASILY WHILE THE VEHICLE IS PARKED & BEING PLUGGED/UNPLUGGED FROM VEHICLE CHARGERS. INDICATIONS ARE THAT MOST BREAK DUE TO THE ACTION OF PLUGGING & UNPLUGGING THE VEHICLE. IT IS ALSO BOLTED TO THE BODY IN A WAY THAT STRESSES THE MATERIAL FURTHER, CAUSING IT TO BREAK EVEN EASIER. IT IS ALSO MOUNTED IN A POORLY CONCEIVED POSITION THAT LEAVES IT SUSCEPTIBLE TO DAMAGE BY OTHER VEHICLES, PASSING PEDESTRIANS & BICYCLISTS, HARD TO PLUG/UNPLUG CHARGE UNITS, & MORE. BROKEN CONNECTORS CAUSE WIRE HARNESS DAMAGE WHICH CAN LEAD TO ELECTRICAL SHORTS, FIRES [INCLUDING BATTERY PACK FIRES], & ELECTROCUTION. WITHOUT EVEN INSPECTING THE INVOLVED VEHICLE CHRYSLER/FIAT REFUSES TO REPAIR THEM UNDER WARRANTY, & INSTEAD DEALERS ARE QUOTING $1800-$4000 [DEPENDING ON LOCATION] TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE HARNESS, NOT JUST THE BROKEN CONNECTOR BODY, WHICH AHS LED MANY OWNERS TO IGNORE THE PROBLEM OR TRY 'CREATIVE' WAYS OF GETTING BY, LIKE GLUES.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-04-28
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: MY SUNROOF EXPLODED WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY. AS I WAS DRIVING (WITH SUNROOF CLOSED), A LOUD "BOOM" SOUNDED. MY FIRST THOUGHT WAS SOMETHING HIT ME. BUT I QUICKLY REALIZED MY SUNROOF EXPLODED. CARS BEHIND ME SCATTERED AS GLASS FLEW ALL OVER THE FREEWAY. THIS EXPLOSION WAS QUITE JARRING, AND UNDER DIFFERENT CIRCUMSTANCES, THIS COULD HAVE CAUSED AN ACCIDENT. FORTUNATELY, THAT DIDN'T HAPPEN. I CONTACTED FIAT CHRYSLER, BUT THEY WILL NOT CLAIM FAULT. SUNROOFS DON'T EXPLODE. AND IF THEY DO, IT HAS TO BE A MANUFACTURING FLAW. FIAT CHRYSLER NEEDS TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THIS BEFORE AN INCIDENT LIKE THIS CAUSES SOME ONE TO GET HURT.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-09-14
  • VIN: 3C3CFFGE0FT
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: RECEIVED A R20 SAFETY RECALL NOTICE FOR MY 2015 FIAT 500E REGARDING A PROBLEM WITH THE EVCU (ELECTIRC VEHICLE CONTROL UNIT) THAT MAY SET A DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE COD (DTC) THAT CAN RESULT IN A SHIFT TO NEUTRAL CONDITION. THIS COULD CAUSE A LOSS OF MOTOR POWER, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH. I CALLED PREMIER FIAT OF FREMONT 7 TIMES OVER THE COURSE OF 1-2 MONTHS AND WAS NEVER ABLE TO REACH ANYONE IN THEIR SERVICE DEPARTMENT TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT. I LEFT A MESSAGE EACH TIME NOTING THE SAFETY RECALL, BUT STILL NO RESPONSE. I AM DISAPPOINTED THAT A GREAT SALES EXPERIENCE WAS FOLLOWED BY A SERIOUSLY UNRELIABLE SERVICE EXPERIENCE. LOOKS LIKE I'LL HAVE TO DRIVE INTO THE DEALERSHIP UNANNOUNCED AT THIS POINT BECAUSE PHONE CALLS TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT APPARENTLY DOESN'T WORK HERE...AND SAFETY IS AT STAKE.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-04-25
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: 3 DAYS AFTER DRIVING MY NEW FIAT 500E WHICH I AM LEASING , I BEGAN TO NOTICE EXTREMELY UNCOMFORTABLE PHYSICAL SENSATIONS. THE ONLY THING I CAN COMPARE IT TO IS TAKING ON AN OLD CELLPHONE FOR A LONG PERIOD OF TIME. IT'S A SIMILAR KIND OF FEELING OF POWER AND RADIATION. I HAVE TAKEN AT LEAST 10 PEOPLE FOR RIDES IN THE CAR. 3 OF THEM REPORT SIMILAR SENSATIONS, WITHOUT BEING PROMPTED IN ANY WAY WHILE SOME ARE NOT AWARE OF THE THE RADIATION. EFFECTS/SYMPTOMS (PARTIAL LIST ) : HEAD ACHE, TINGLING ON FACE AND AROUND EARS ,PRESSURE FEELING IN EARS, PRESSURE FEELING IN CENTER OF CHEST, FOGGY FEELING IN HEAD, WHICH CONTINUES FOR 15 TO 60 MINUTES AFTER DRIVING. NOTES: I HAVE TESTED MYSELF SITTING IN THE CAR WITHOUT IT TURNED ON FOR 30 MINUTES. THERE ARE NO NEGATIVE EFFECTS WHATSOEVER. THE SYMPTOMS ARE WORSE WHEN: 1) THE AIR CONDITIONER IS TURNED ON 2) MORE ACCELERATION IS USED, USING MORE POWER. THESE ARE NOT DUE TO THE FEELING OF THE AIR, OR G FORCE FROM ACCELERATION. I HAVE MADE SURE TO RULE OUT BOTH OF THESE FACTORS. I HAVE STOPPED DRIVING THE CAR BECAUSE IT IS NOT SAFE FOR ME TO DRIVE. IT HAD BEEN TESTED AS "NORMAL" BY FIAT MECHANICS. THERE IS NOTHING AT ALL NORMAL ABOUT THIS AND SOMETHING HAS TO BE DONE.

Negative 2015 Fiat 500e car reviews

  1. Gregory Rutherford 2024-09-13

The vehicle did not meet my expectations as the wheels wore out after only 10k of use and the tires were expensive to replace. Additionally, the headlights needed to be replaced in the second year. Despite my attempts to address these issues with customer service, they were not resolved. It would have been helpful if I had been informed about the durability of the tires before leasing the vehicle. A more transparent approach would have allowed me to make a more informed decision.

  2. Anthony Bechtelar 2024-09-07

That's not good value for money, as it has a limited range.

  3. Trey VonRueden 2024-07-03

I leased a 2015 500e, but unfortunately, the charging cable broke and the plugin part became loose, causing the prongs to burn my outlet. Due to this issue, my car is currently in the shop and I am unable to drive it. Despite my concerns, customer service was unable to provide me with information regarding the warranty of the charging cable. As a result, I am left feeling frustrated with the situation. However, I am confident that the issue will be resolved soon and I will be able to enjoy my car once again.

Positive 2015 Fiat 500e car reviews

  1. Edison Koch 2025-01-08

We purchased the car instead of leasing it and we are extremely pleased with it overall. The back seats are quite usable, although taller individuals may find them a bit cramped. We usually keep the rear seats down. The car is very zippy with excellent acceleration, especially from 0 to 50. I typically get over 85 miles on the highway from each charge, but your mileage may vary. You may get less if you have the A/C on, more in the city, or if you drive less aggressively than I do. I have driven the gas 500 (not the Abarth), and the 500e is significantly more enjoyable. Although we had to deal with the half-shaft recall and some additional teething problems, the fundamentals (electric engine, inverter, battery) all appear to be very good. The car is certainly deserving of the awards it has recently received.

  2. Frankie Littel 2024-11-16

It's great to hear that you find it fun to drive! Additionally, you mentioned that it has great acceleration and good handling, which is fantastic.

  3. Hoyt Russel 2024-11-11

I drive this car 58 miles each way to work and 58 miles back home, all on freeway miles. Part of the drive includes a steep hill for about 2 miles. On the way to work, I end up with about 20% battery life, but on the way home, I am at about 8%. So far, the car has 46K miles and it's been great because I save tons of cash versus gas. The only thing I don't like about the car is the circular gear console. It's a little tight for me personally because I like to open my legs and stretch out from the long commutes I do every day, but besides that, the car is GREAT!!! If you commute less than 50 miles, I definitely recommend it. It's also great in tight spots when looking for parking.

  4. Loy Will 2024-09-07

I was a bit worried about buying a used lease vehicle made by Fiat since I've always purchased new vehicles. However, after six months of driving this little electric car, I must say I'm quite impressed! I was originally looking into leasing an electric car while idling in commute traffic with my V-8, but ended up buying this Fiat instead. With the savings on gas and bridge tolls, this used car will pay for itself in about 5 years, not to mention the reduced wear and maintenance on my Jeep. The only downside I've experienced so far is the lack of Fiat service centers.

  5. Willard McDermott 2024-08-16

These used cars are unbeatable in terms of cost. They are also very enjoyable to drive in the city and on crowded highways with frequent stops and starts. However, they may not be the best option for long highway drives at full speed as they tend to bounce around quite a bit.
