1996 Oldsmobile Aurora problems

oldsmobile logo

The Oldsmobile Aurora is a luxury sedan, manufactured and marketed by General Motors from 1994 until 2003 over two generations — sharing platforms with Buick Riviera and using the Cadillac-derived G platform. At the time of production, the Aurora was the flagship vehicle in the Oldsmobile lineup. It originated as the 1989 Oldsmobile tube car concept.

The Aurora replaced the Toronado coupe and eventually the Oldsmobile 98, LSS and Regency in the Oldsmobile range — using V8 and V6 engines. It was equipped with a four-speed automatic transmission.

Origins

Early design work on what would become the Aurora began as early as the late 1980s with the 1989 Oldsmobile Tube Car engineering concept, designed by Bud Chandler. In addition to the overall similar shape, the Tube Car featured many detailed elements that were later found on the production automobile, including a full-width taillamp, wraparound rear windshield, and frameless windows. Unlike the eventual production car, the Tube Car used a pillarless hardtop design with suicide doors. The final production design was signed off on in July 1989, originally set for a 1992 start of production.

By the Aurora's introduction, Oldsmobile sales had fallen from a record high of 1,066,122 in 1985 to 402,936 in 1993; rumors of the division's demise were rampant, which GM at the time firmly denied. Competition from Acura, Infiniti and Lexus offered similar products that benefited from superior durability and reliability reputations. GM developed the Aurora to rejuvenate Oldsmobile as a result. The Aurora bore no Oldsmobile badging save for the radio-CD-cassette deck and engine cover (during focus group testing, potential customers had been repelled when they learned the Aurora was in truth an Oldsmobile). At one point, then-division head John Rock (who had recently arrived from the GMC division) proposed using the Aurora name to replace the Oldsmobile brand entirely and offer cars in a similar fashion to GM's nascent Saturn division (a plan ultimately nixed by the GM higher-ups, though for a period Saturn's no-haggle pricing was implemented). Instead, the Aurora used a stylized A emblem, foreshadowing a similar restyling of Oldsmobile's corporate "rocket" emblem for 1997.

One bizarre footnote of development was a 1993 incident where a prototype Aurora, driven by freelance car reviewer Tim Dunne, was nearly totaled after a four-foot log fell from a Michigan Department of Natural Resources truck (Dunne was able to maneuver the Aurora so much that only the right front wheel was struck); this subsequently led then-governor John Engler to purchase an Aurora (Engler having been a life-long Oldsmobile customer).

Oldsmobile subsequently borrowed Aurora styling cues for its Intrigue and compact Alero models.

Common 1996 Oldsmobile Aurora problems

The 1996 Oldsmobile Aurora is known for several common problems, primarily related to the engine, electrical system, and weather stripping.

One of the most significant issues is the head gasket problem, which is common in the Oldsmobile Aurora due to the Northstar engines used in these vehicles

. The head gasket can fail due to corrosion from coolant in the water jacket when not completely full of water, causing steam pockets that increase pressure inside the water jacket and potentially damage the engine. This issue can be costly and time-consuming to repair, as it requires new head bolts and potentially drilling and bolt threads in the block. However, many owners are willing to invest in these repairs due to their love for the car.

Another common problem is oil leaks, which can be caused by various factors, including worn-out seals, gaskets, or other engine components. Oil leaks can lead to significant engine damage if not addressed promptly, as they can cause the engine to run low on oil, leading to increased wear and tear on engine components and, in some cases, engine failure.

The electrical system in the 1996 Oldsmobile Aurora is also prone to issues, particularly related to the primary vehicle ground on the passenger fender well. This ground is exposed to salt, dirt, and water, which can cause corrosion and electrical issues. Many owners have reported adding a new ground from the engine block to the shock tower to solve these issues

Finally, the weather stripping in the 1996 Oldsmobile Aurora can become brittle and crack over time, particularly as the car ages. This can lead to water and other elements entering the car's interior, causing damage to the car's interior and potentially leading to other issues. While GM no longer makes these parts, some owners have had success with custom-made weather stripping, although this can be expensive

In summary, the 1996 Oldsmobile Aurora is known for several common problems, primarily related to the engine, electrical system, and weather stripping. These issues can be costly and time-consuming to repair, but many owners are willing to invest in these repairs due to their love for the car.

Negative 1996 Oldsmobile Aurora car reviews

  1. Easton Shields 2025-01-01

I have owned this car for 8 years and it has been quite a journey. Although it has only done 85K miles, I have had to replace almost everything at least once. From fuel injectors to shocks, circuit boards to O2 sensors, air conditioning compressor clutch to fuel pump, fuel tank (!), brake rotors twice, and brake lines, I have spent thousands of dollars to keep it on the road. While I want to love this car, I am tired of spending a fortune to keep it going. As a result, I have decided to sell it and move on.

  2. Eloy Legros 2024-10-20

In Consumer Reports, this car receives some of the worst ratings in every category except exhaust. My experience with this model vehicle certainly supports that. I had to replace the air conditioning system, radiator, water pump, computer, and fix numerous other problems. These issues all occurred before GM's claim of 100,000 miles before the first tune-up. However, I have since switched to a reliable Japanese car.

  3. Jaime Gulgowski 2024-06-05

Although this car has had all scheduled maintenance, it has required several repairs such as the air conditioning, water pump, brakes, radiator, and CD player. Currently, there are some computer and electrical issues tied to the engine and transmission that mechanics are having trouble diagnosing. However, I am confident that these issues will be resolved soon. While I wish I had researched the car before purchasing, I am still optimistic about its future performance.

  4. Owen Graham 2024-01-28

Consider the potential risks of purchasing a used car. In my experience, even with diligent maintenance, the engine (head gasket) failed at 150000 miles and required a costly $8000 (Canadian) replacement. As a result, I have decided not to purchase another GM product.

Positive 1996 Oldsmobile Aurora car reviews

  1. Jarrett Leuschke 2024-10-19

No problems encountered with the vehicle at all. A joy to own and drive.

  2. Deontae Beatty 2024-10-16

AC, power steering, transmission, front struts, starter, power windows, fuel tank door and brakes have all been repaired or replaced at least once, with the AC being repaired twice. While this may not be the best reflection on US car manufacturers catching up with the Japanese and Europeans, I have still enjoyed the car's looks and ride despite the repairs. I bought the car used and during the first year of ownership, the repairs were covered by GM. Overall, I still recommend this car for its style and performance.

This is the first car I ever paid cash for and had reservations at first, but I have been more than satisfied with it. After owning this car for a year and a half, the only money I put into it was for the 100,000 mile tune-up, which cost me $300. Although it was a bit expensive, it was worth it. This car drives so smoothly, it's like it floats on the interstate. I would take one of these old cars over a new cheaper model any day!! All of the bells and whistles are great! Defrosting side-view mirrors, heated leather seats (couldn't live without them!), and passenger side climate control make this my perfect car!!

I'm so glad to hear that you've had such a positive experience with your car's mechanics! It's great to know that the Northstar motor and transmission have been so reliable for you, even after 161,000 miles.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it 5 years ago as a low-mileage used vehicle in prime condition, and it's been a great investment. Even with 185,000 miles, I haven't experienced any leaks or oil consumption, and all of the electronics and air suspension still work perfectly. It's my daily driver and the car I take on trips anywhere. Unfortunately, I did have to replace the starter this year, but other than that, it's been smooth sailing. The Northstar engine is fantastic, and the car is incredibly responsive and powerful. With Olds now gone, my wife has moved to Chrysler, and I may too when this car finally dies - if it ever does. Thanks for listening!
