The BMW Z models are a line of roadsters manufactured by German automaker BMW. The Z stands for Zukunft (German for future), and has been produced in four different series with six generations consisting of roadster, coupé, sports car, and concept variants.

The introduction of the M Coupé and M Roadster in the Z3 line marked the first of the Z series to have a high-performance BMW M variant. The first generation Z4 also continued to offer M Coupé and M Roadster variants. The current Z4 (G29) uses BMW's (B58B30) inline-six, its platform is the basis for the current Toyota Supra.

BMW Z1 (E30 based; 1989–1991)

The BMW Z1 is a two-seat roadster developed by BMW and was produced from March 1989 to June 1991. It was based on the E30 3 Series platform. The Z1 featured unusual doors which, instead of opening outward or upward, dropped into the door sills and had body panels which could easily be removed and replaced; the car could be driven with all its body panels removed for weight reduction and increased performance. Only 8,000 examples of the Z1 were produced.

Steering Problems

Another common problem area for the 2008 BMW Z4 is steering issues. Steering problems can range from minor inconveniences to more severe issues that can impact the safety of the vehicle. Engine Problems

Engine problems are also common with the 2008 BMW Z4, with some owners reporting issues related to engine misfiring. However, this can also impact the overall performance and drivability of the vehicle.

Seat Belts/Air Bags Problems

The 2008 BMW Z4 has also had issues with seat belts and airbags, with some owners reporting unexpected airbag deployment. This can be a significant safety concern, as it can occur without warning and potentially cause injury to the vehicle's occupants.

Electrical Problems

Does the BMW Z4 have problems?

Drivers of certain BMW models have reported coolant leaks, especially in the 2003 to 2005 Z4 models. These leaks can lead to engine overheating, possibly damaging engine components and even causing engine failure. Signs of a coolant leak may include sudden temperature spikes and engine overheating.

Is BMW Z4 2008 reliable?

The Z4 has proved itself to be a reliable car. It's very mechanically dependable, as it uses lots of technology found on other BMW cars from its era. As we mentioned in the first page of this review, it's the niggling faults such as electrical gremlins and tatty trim that let the car down.

Is BMW Z4 high maintenance?

With an annual maintenance and repair cost of about $2,100, the BMW Z4 is a rather annoying piece of machinery to contend with on a daily basis. With steering and engine problems aplenty, the Z4 then becomes a sports car that will end up stealing your time on the road, as well as your peace of mind.

Which year BMW Z4 is most reliable?

The BMW Z4 is an excellent choice, and there are several quality years to choose from on the market. Go with 2004, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, or 2020 for the most dependable driving experience.

  • VIN: 4USBU33508L
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: A FAILED FRONT PASSENGER AIR BAG SEAT SENSOR MAT CAUSES THE AIR BAG WARNING LAMP AND THE PASSENGER AIR BAG 'ON-OFF' LAMP TO BE ILLUMINATED SIMULTANEOUSLY. IN AUGUST 13, 2008, BMW ISSUED A VOLUNTARY RECALL INVOLVING FRONT PASSENGER SEAT SENSOR MAT ON U.S.A. MODEL BMWS REGARDING THE FRONT PASSENGER AIR BAG SEAT SENSOR MAT INVOLVING APPROXIMATELY 200,000 MODEL YEAR 2004-06 VEHICLES. MY SIMILARLY AFFECTED 2008 VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE RECALL ALSO STATES THAT IN THIS SITUATION, BMW RECOMMENDS CUSTOMERS NOT TO USE THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT AND HAVE THE VEHICLE SERVICED IMMEDIATELY. WHEN I CALLED MY LOCAL BMW DEALER, I WAS ADVISED OF A $152 SHOP DIAGNOSIS FEE AND A LIKELY REPAIR COST OF $1800. THIS IS A PROHIBITIVE COST FOR A FACTORY DEFECT ON A 73 YEAR OLD SENIOR CITIZEN LIVING ON SOCIAL SECURITY.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-08-01
  • VIN: 4USBU33508L
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: 'THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED USED FROM A DEALER IN OCTOBER 2012, WITH ABOUT 30600 MILES;, CURRENT MILEAGE IS ABOUT 57400. THE AIRBAG DISABLED LIGHT IN INSTRUMENT CLUSTER STARTED ACTING UP SEVERAL MONTHS AGO; NOW IT IS ON AT ALL TIMES, WHETHER OR NOT A PASSENGER IS IN THE SEAT OR THE CAR IS IN MOTION OR STOPPED. A SCAN OF THE VEHICLE SHOWS A DEFECTIVE PASSENGER OCCUPANCY SENSOR / MAT. RESETTING THE LIGHT WITH THE SCAN TOOL DOES NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. MANY 2008 BMW MODELS WERE RECALLED FOR A SIMILAR PROBLEM, BUT NOT THE Z4, EVEN THOUGH THERE ARE SEVERAL COMPLAINTS LISTED HERE. THE LOCAL BMW DEALER WANTS $152.00 SHOP DIAGNOSIS FEE AND A REPLACEMENT MAT SWITCH COULD BE $1800.00. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE KNOWN BY THE MANUFACTURER FROM THE BEGINNING AND SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN THE RECALL.

  • VIN: 4USBU33588L
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: TAKATA RECALL AIRBAG LIGHT ON AT ALL TIMES ON THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER. A SCAN OF THE VEHICLE SHOWS A DEFECTIVE PASSENGER SEAT CUSHION SENSOR. RESETTING THE LIGHT WITH THE SCAN TOOLS DOES NOT FIX THE PROBLEM, THE LIGHT GOES BACK ON IMMEDIATELY AND STAYS ON WHETHER THERE IS A PASSENGER SEATED IN THE VEHICLE OR NOT. IT DOES NOT MAKE A DIFFERENCE IF THE VEHICLE IS STATIONARY OR MOVING. I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE USED ON MAY 7TH 2016 AND THE LIGHT WAS ON WHEN I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-12-14
  • VIN: 4USDU53528L
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: VERY ERRATIC STEERING. CROSSING THE CROWN OF A ROAD WILL PULL ONE WAY AND THEN QUICKLY PULL IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION UNLIKE ANYTHING I HAVE EVER DRIVEN. ALSO SAME EFFECT WITH TRYING TO STAY IN LANES WITH ANY COMMON DEVIATION. THIS IS WORST AT HWY SPEEDS BUT DOES OCCUR AT LOWER SPEEDS AS WELL.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-01-17
  • VIN: 4USBU53568L
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: LIGHT INDICATING PASSENGER AIRBAG WAS DISABLED BEGAN COMING ON WHILE PASSENGER IN THE SEAT. WITHIN A FEW WEEKS OF NOTICING THIS, PASSENGER AIRBAG ALWAYS INDICATES OFF. MANY 08 MODELS WERE RECALLED FOR PASSENGER AIRBAG MAT FAILURES, BUT NOT THE Z4 (TOO FEW CARS MADE?) I CALLED BMW-USA AND A CASE AGENT CALLED ME BACK. BMW WOULD TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE FAILURE.
2014-12-07

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-11-08
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: JUST BOUGHT A USED 2008 Z4. CANNOT DRIVE STRAIGHT LINE, CAR GOES ALL OVER THE ROAD. STEERING HAS "STICK-SLIP" EFFECT. CAR WANDERS FROM RIGHT TO LEFT AND LEFT TO RIGHT. GOT RUBBER ELEMENTS IN FRONT AXLE REPLACED, 4 WHEEL ALIGNMENT, ..., NO CHANGE. APPEARS TO BE A POWER STEERING ISSUE. *TR
2014-10-09

STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-01-01
  • Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: WHILE TURNING ON A CONSTANT RADIUS CLOVER-LEAF ON-RAMP (RIGHT OR LEFT), A SUDDEN CHANGE IN STEERING ANGLE WAS REQUIRED TO AVOID AN OBSTACLE. AS THE ELECTRICALLY-ASSISTED STEERING WAS QUICKLY ADJUSTED, A FLAT SPOT (OR A HEAVY SPOT OR A DELAY IN BOOST) IN THE STEERING WHEEL/FEEL WAS ENCOUNTERED. IN OTHER WORDS, MORE FORCE WAS REQUIRED THAN EXPECTED TO QUICKLY CHANGE THE STEERING ANGLE. IF THIS IS NORMAL, IT COULD INTERFERE WITH EMERGENCY MANEUVERS TO AVOID OBSTACLES. PERSONALLY, I FIND IT TO BE UNSAFE AS THE STEERING FEEL IS UNPREDICTABLE. THIS UNPREDICTABLE STEERING FEEL OCCURS ANYTIME I NEED TO MAKE AN ABRUPT CHANGE IN STEERING ANGLE. *TR
2013-07-18

STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-06-17
  • Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: AFTER STARTING UP THE CAR (BUT DURING IGNITION, THE KEY SLIPPED IN MY FINGERS CAUSING A MISSED START, I THEREFORE HAD TO TURN THE KEY AGAIN TO GET ENGINE TO TURN OVER.) AND DRIVING FROM MY DRIVEWAY, THERE WAS A COMPLETE FAILURE OF THE STEERING ASSIST WHICH CAUSED EXTREMELY DIFFICULT STEERING/CORNERING. I PULLED OVER, THINKING IT HAD TO DO WITH THE MISSED START, TURNED OFF THE ENGINE AND RESTARTED IT; STILL NO POWER ASSIST. TOOK IT TO THE DEALER, THEY WERE ABLE TO DO A COMPUTER RESET WHICH RESTORED POWER ASSIST, BUT TOLD ME THEY COULD NOT SAY IF OR WHEN IT WOULD HAPPEN AGAIN. I COULD OPT FOR COMPLETE STEERING COLUMN REPLACEMENT AT A COST OF $3500! I'VE OWNED THE CAR FOR 5 MONTHS AND MAYBE PUT 400 MILES ON IT? THIS IS TOO DANGEROUS A THING TO LET GO, I DON'T THINK THIS IS SAFE. THIS SHOULD BE RECALLED. *TR
2012-07-26

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2012-07-26
  • VIN: 4USBU335X8L
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: STEERING FAILURE WITH DTC FAILURE AND BRAKE YELLOW WARNING LIGHTS. MUST FIGHT WITH CAR TO DRIVE STRAIGHT WANTS TO VEER TO THE LEFT WITH SHAKY STEERING. *TR

WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2011-08-19
  • VIN: 4USBU33528L
  • Components: WHEELS
  • Summary: ALL FOUR RIMS ARE BENT. THE VEHICLE HAS NEVER BEEN TAKEN OFF-ROAD, NOR HAS THE VEHICLE ENCOUNTERED MAJOR POTHOLES. A LOGICAL EXPLANATION FOR THIS OCCURRENCE IS SHODDY MANUFACTURING. BENT RIMS POTENTIALLY CAUSE HAZARDOUS DRIVING CONDITIONS. *TR

Negative 2008 Bmw Z4 car reviews

  1. Jairo Gorczany 2024-09-04

Although the car is a head turner, I am looking forward to the end of my lease and returning it to the dealership. The German suspension is wonderful for flawless German roads, but unfortunately, it is too stiff for flawed American roads, making the ride uncomfortable. The seats are poorly padded and after a half hour in the car, I am ready to get out. I took it from Washington DC to New York and by the time I got to my destination, I was eager to leave it behind. However, I still use it because it is small and easy to park.

  2. Sven Frami 2024-08-26

I recently leased a 2007 BMW Z4 3.0si to use as a daily driver, but quickly realized that this car is better suited for weekend adventures! While the ride can be a bit bumpy on older roads and the interior is a bit cramped, the handling, transmission, and power are all top-notch. It's an absolute blast to drive in the cool morning air or for a romantic evening cruise, but it's not meant to replace a sedan. Despite this, I'm still excited to upgrade to the 2008 535i!

  3. Marcel Eichmann 2024-08-05

Looking to rent a car for your holiday in Phoenix? Consider the 2007 Z4! I recently drove it from Phoenix to Page via the Grand Canyon and I have to say, the acceleration is fantastic. You can easily reach speeds of 80 or even 100mph without even noticing! However, I did find the steering to be a bit tight, especially on uneven roads. Additionally, the circulation design could use some improvement when the top is down. During my drive down the Grand Canyon, wind came into the cabin from the gap between the window and the trunk top, resulting in some loud wind noise. Despite these minor issues, the Z4 is a beautiful looking roadster that is sure to turn heads!

  4. Antone Langosh 2024-07-03

This review highlights some areas of improvement for the car. The paint is fragile and scratches easily, which is unfortunate. Additionally, the car is mostly made of plastic, which makes it difficult to remove scratches. The beeper can be annoying as it doesn't stop for a minute and there are no chimes. The seat belt cannot be adjusted and can irritate the neck. The runflat tires are sensitive and need to be checked regularly. The 6-speed manual doesn't shift smoothly. The car doesn't hold its value and depreciated $13K in less than 4 months. The steering requires the driver to be more active than expected. The ride quality on rough roads is not up to par and every imperfection can be felt. The car can also be noisy with the roof up and rattles. While there are areas for improvement, the car still has some great features. It's important to note that the reviewer has high standards, especially when paying $47K+ for a new BMW!

Positive 2008 Bmw Z4 car reviews

  1. Keshawn Mertz 2025-01-04

This car is so much fun to drive! Although the steering can be a bit startling on grooved or rough pavement, it's nothing that will ruin your experience. With the Sports Package, it takes off in any gear, even on the interstate. The MPG is amazing for a performance car of this caliber, making it a great investment. If you're considering buying one, I highly recommend getting a CPO instead of a new one to save some serious cash. Mine had only 19K on it! Make sure you get the SI model instead of the i, as the difference in horsepower is definitely worth it. Just be careful around cement bumpers, as getting too close can mess up that one-piece front bumper. Also, watch out for potholes, as there isn't much clearance on the underside.

  2. Cloyd Runolfsdottir 2025-01-04

Nothing beats completely changing your day like hopping into the Z and springing off into the night. I had an incredible driving experience and I'm lucky to have many windy roads to enjoy. It was so much fun!

  3. Lew Green 2024-11-24

Hey there! Just wanted to let you know that I have a sweet sports car with a classy style that's currently in storage until May. I'll be sure to update you in June with more details!

  4. Abdiel Barrows 2024-11-06

The car performs as expected with great acceleration, exhaust note, and handling. Although, when driven with the top up on not-so-perfect days, there may be a few rattles in the roof and seats. It may not be as fast as a Vette off the line, but the exceptionally comfortable seats, awesome THX stereo, and nimble handling make it all worth it in the end. However, if you plan to do most of your driving with the top up or in the winter months, it may not be the best option for you!

  5. Brook Kub 2024-11-05

This car is an absolute blast to drive! No matter where you live, heated seats are a must-have. The feeling of driving with the top down is unbeatable. I highly recommend getting the M seats, as well as the premium and sport packages. The navigation system is top-notch and seamlessly integrates with the radio and phone. With just a double click of the remote, you can put the top down before even entering the car! The sport button is amazing and provides excellent driving stability control. The extended leather is also a great addition. If you're looking for an automatic transmission, I recommend the 3.0si with 265 HP - it's plenty powerful. However, if you prefer a manual transmission and want 355 HP, go for the M. This car is just so much fun to drive - it's fast, rides great, and turns heads wherever you go!
