- Summary: My girlfriend, [XXX] , purchased a used 2003 BMW z4 2.5i. It is pristine with 47K original miles. Always maintained, garaged and never driven in foul weather. I, [XXX] , drove it home for her and noticed the steering to be "sticky". This showed on the highway traveling at 65 MPH. It was very unsettling to feel the car want to track in a direction that i could not control. I used "more force" to pull the steering wheel to get tracking correctly and stay in my travel lane. Lucking I did not overcorrect and lose control or cause and accident. Once it happened it continued to happen the balance of the drive on the highway and back roads. I've owned and driven many different makes and models of vehicles from Dodge, Renault, Toyota, GMC, Chrysler, Volvo, Geo, etc. and never has "steering" been an issue. Once we got home I looked up "sticky steering" issue for the 2003 Z4 and this is a known issue. Driving this BMW was unsettling and unsafe. The contact stated while driving, the rear view of the vehicle was blocked by the detached plastic liner. The contact stated that the convertible top was able to retract and return into place, but the convertible top attachment clasps and mechanism were exposed. The contact was unable to reattach the liner. The contact had not taken the vehicle to a dealer or to an independent. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 99,000.

The 1st recommended check of steering components per BMW service manual is is "6th engine oil service (approx 60,000 miles)". There was no warning of the premature fail. This is the same part that was issued an extended service contract by BMW for various other models. I believe my model is rare enough to not be included but it should. The existing recall/warranty is “SIB 01 12 19 FRONT GRILLE UPPER/LOWER ACTIVE AIR FLAPS: LTD WTY EXT TO 15 YEARS/150,000 MILES” and I believe mine should be included in this as it is the same engine as these various models. The grill shutters are experiencing the same fault and they do not open and close properly as the models listed. I receive code P05AF which is signals the lower shutters are not closing.

- Summary: I have just found out that my 2006 BMW Z4 Convertible has serious wiring issues. The wires for example on my front headlights the insulation is falling off the and leaving bare wires. I am very concerned this could be a fire safety issue that could result in bare electrical wires shorting together and starting a car fire. My research shows that many people who have 2006 BMW Z4 Convertibles are having this same issue. This seems to be a real issue with BMW using cheap wiring harnesses material and over time due heat and cooling is cause the insulation to fail and resulting in this issue.

In short, I was so impressed with the styling and performance of the Z4 3.0i that I ordered it over the phone without even taking it for a test drive. It's an amazing car that turns heads wherever I go. To really experience its power, switch to Sport Mode and hit the throttle. If DSC interferes, simply turn it off. The stereo is also fantastic, and the exhaust note makes the engine sound bigger than it actually is. The automatic top is a real crowd-pleaser. The handling is solid and stable, and the ride is firm due to the sport suspension and run-flat tires. I highly recommend taking one for a test drive or, like me, just going ahead and buying one!

It's only been a week since I got the car, so it might be too soon to give a proper rating. However, I can say that the car feels brand new with only 23k miles (which I verified). The sound and punch are both great, and the ride is not as harsh as I initially feared. It's definitely not a '55 Buick, but it's also not too tight. In fact, it's much more comfortable than the Miata I tried before, which didn't fit me well. When I had it inspected, the guy at the station even thanked me for bringing such a great car. It's been six months now, and the car has been running perfectly. Driving it on the back roads of Cape Cod is an absolute joy. It has just enough power, and even though I might prefer the 3.0, it never feels like it's going to get away from me or break loose. Sport mode adds a little excitement. I haven't had to do any repairs or maintenance after the initial inspection and oil change.

This review highlights some areas of improvement for the car. The paint is fragile and scratches easily, which is difficult to fix due to the plastic material. The beeper can be annoying as it does not stop for a minute and there are no chimes. The seat belt cannot be adjusted and can irritate the neck. The runflat tires are sensitive and require added air twice in 4 months. The 6-speed manual does not shift smoothly. The car does not hold its value and has depreciated $13K in less than 4 months. The steering requires the driver to be more active than necessary. The ride quality on rough roads is not up to par and every imperfection can be felt. The car can be noisy with the roof up and rattles. While the car has some areas of improvement, it is still a BMW and has high standards. The writer paid $47K+ for a new BMW and expects the best.

I have the v-6. It's a great car for performance and power. However, it does burn a lot of gas. But then again, when you pay over $42,000 for a sports car, you can't complain too much about gas. The car is extremely fun to drive, and I love the automatic top that you don't have to latch yourself.

One thing to keep in mind about this car is that it's not designed to compete on the track against a Cayman S or Boxster S. However, it's an excellent high-speed, top-down cruiser that's perfect for what it was built for. If you compare it to those other cars, you'll immediately notice how much better they handle, but for everyday driving, the Z4 is quite good. The N54 engine is superb and can be easily upgraded. The car is also very comfortable and luxurious. The only downsides I've identified are that some 2011 models don't come with the Combox controller, which means you won't have Bluetooth audio capabilities. Additionally, the handling in some tight corners feels a bit delayed, and I've felt the rear end skitter out on me more than a few times. It's not to the extent that it would be dangerous or cause any real concern, but it certainly doesn't have the
