2021 Bmw X7 problems

bmw logo

The BMW X7 is a full-sized luxury sport utility vehicle manufactured by BMW. It is BMW's largest and 2nd most expensive SUV in its line-up.

The X7 was first announced by BMW in March 2014. It was officially unveiled on October 17, 2018, with pre-orders being taken online. The X7 has been available at dealers since March 2019.

Launch and development

BMW provided a preview of the upcoming X7 with the showing of the Concept X7 iPerformance at the 2017 International Motor Show in Frankfurt. Production of the X7 started in 2018 at the BMW US Manufacturing Company plant in Greer, South Carolina.

The X7 is built on the same BMW CLAR platform as the G05 X5, however the X7 is taller and wider plus it has been stretched for increased cargo space and third row seating which is standard and more spacious for adults (the X5's third row seating, which is optional, is mainly for children). In contrast to the X5, it is not available with rear-wheel drive, instead using an all-wheel drive (xDrive) drivetrain for all models. In Europe, diesel and petrol engines are available, while the choice is limited to inline-6 and V8 petrol engines in the United States.

The G07 features a self-levelling air suspension system, with a double-wishbone front suspension and multi-link rear suspension. It can be raised or lowered by 40 mm (1.6 in) and will automatically lower the car by 20 mm (0.8 in) at speeds of over 138 km/h (86 mph). The boot capacity is rated at 326 litres (11.5 cu ft), and 2,120 litres (75 cu ft) with the seats folded down.

All petrol and diesel models feature engine particulate filters and meet the Euro 6d-TEMP emissions standard. The xDrive50i model is available outside the European markets, while the European markets will get the M50i models.

In July 2019, a pickup truck concept car was unveiled, though not intended for production.

Common 2021 Bmw X7 problems

Based on complaints from owners of the 2021 BMW X7, several common problems have been reported:

  • Connection Between 48-Volt Battery and Starter-Generator: Another reported problem involves the connection between the 48-Volt battery and the starter-generator assembly not being assembled properly. This can result in increased electrical resistance at the connections, potentially causing issues with the vehicle's electrical system. BMW has initiated a recall to inspect and replace the connection if necessary, free of charge.
  • Air Suspension Concerns: Some owners have raised concerns about the air suspension system in the X7. While the BMW B58 engine and N63R engine iterations are considered reliable, issues with the air suspension have been highlighted by some owners. Problems with the air suspension can lead to a less comfortable ride and potentially costly repairs. Proper maintenance and inspection of the air suspension system are recommended to prevent any major issues.
  • Mechanical and Electrical Component Failures: Instances of mechanical and electrical component failures have been reported by X7 owners. These failures can range from minor issues like trim pieces to more significant problems like leaks in the roof that affect GPS and other electronic systems. While some of these issues have been covered under warranty and promptly addressed by BMW, they highlight the importance of regular maintenance and prompt attention to any emerging problems to ensure the vehicle's reliability and performance.

By addressing these common problems reported by owners of the 2021 BMW X7, potential buyers can make informed decisions and be aware of the issues they may encounter with this vehicle.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-16
  • VIN: 5UXCW2C09M9
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: The transfer case became damaged causing shuddering and loss of power while turning and accelerating. Once failed all power lost to rear wheels. My vehicle is available for inspection upon request and the problem has been confirmed by BMW dealership and replacement is required. Any loss of control of your vehicle is a safety hazard. This is a widely known issue and a recall has already been issued for years 2013-2016. The problem still exist in later models mine being a 2021.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-12
  • VIN: 5UXCW2C0XM9
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: The car’s fuel capacity and miles remaining projection after refueling, both indicate a 12 gallon capacity fuel tank, despite Toyota’s published 17.2 capacity fuel tank. Well documented online, the safety concern here is 1) the fuel level sensor is defective, 2) the gas tank neck design is defective, 3) the miles remaining calculator is calculating incorrectly creating stranded passenger risk, or 4) misleading marketing though not a safety issue, but would have deterred me from purchasing the car due poor distance range. If true, I would want Toyota to purchase the car back.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-12-08
  • VIN: 5UXCW2C08M9
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: When starting the vehicle and shifting into drive, "hard" brakes are felt. Brake pedal is "stuck" in a high position and cannot be compressed. The vehicle is extremely unstable - the car lurches forward when brakes are slightly released. Excessive brake pressure is required to prevent the vehicle from moving inadvertently. This persists for 10-60 seconds, then the brakes relax into the normal position and no other issues are experienced. Confirmed NO lights on dash or warnings sounded. This has been experienced 4 times in 6 months. Issue has been reported to dealership. After second occurrence, dealership took vehicle for diagnostics and updated software. After third occurrence, dealership took vehicle and replaced ABS module, with software update. Feedback from BMW is that they think a diagnostic is running at startup and when the vehicle is shifted into drive it is not finished with the cycle. Most recent visit to dealership was late November 2022. Issue occurred again on 12/8 in the afternoon. Vehicle was parked in carpool line at school. When line began moving, vehicle was started and shifted into gear. Hard brake immediately felt (this is after repairs from BMW). This recurrence prompted this submission.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-07-05
  • VIN: 5uxcw2c08m9
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: When applying brakes and releasing the brakes there is a grinding sound. The grinding sound is pronounced when applying the brake and turning the steering wheel at the same time. When I took the vehicle to Checkered flag BMW of Virginia Beach, I was told per BMW engineering it was norm operating characteristic. The Shop Foreman said he had several customers complain about the same problem and duplicated the problem while driving my vehicle. He was the person that showed me the noise was much louder when turning the steering while braking. The report I received from the Service manager named the issue as brake/pad rotor stiction and pad vibration. The invoice stated that the loud noise was not a flaw or defect, but normal operating characteristic. Simply put and 85,000 vehicle grinding noise is okay. I believe there is a problem that will get much worse over time and become a very serious safety issue. So much so that I will take a loss and sell the vehicle.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-05-16
  • VIN: 5UXCW2C05M9
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: When moisture gets into the cupholders of a BMW 2021 X7, it leaks into the electrical system for the airbag sensors and seatbelt sensors. This makes them USELESS in an accident. BMW currently has a lawsuit pending against this VERY ISSUE. A small amount of soda spilled in the cupholders by my daughter. It was quickly cleaned and dried- but this caused a leak and lead to the restraint system failure- which renders my airbags in the driver and passenger seats useless- along with the seatbelts. They will NOT work in the event of an accident. This was confirmed by Rick Hendrick BMW Charleston in Charleston, SC. BMW should recall the ACSM and make the area waterproof.

  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: 5uxcw2c07m9
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: I was driving a car with family and all of a sudden we all started smelling a burning smell but we thought it must be from outside. However, in just few seconds the vents started throwing vapors so I stopped the car hoping it may stop if some minor damage. However, the hood started throwing oranges color fumes and by the time we all left the vehicle the entire front hood/engine area started burning. There were no indications of any faults in the car. This was the most shocking incident we had to face with my family where there were two kids of 4 and 9 along with my wife and her parents who are senior citizens.

Negative 2021 Bmw X7 car reviews

  1. Travon O'Conner 2024-04-18

I have owned this car for 6 months and unfortunately, I have had a very negative experience. The car has been unreliable and I have had some issues with the customer service. I am disappointed with the quality of the car and the service I have received. I hope that BMW can improve their customer service and the reliability of their cars in the future.

  2. Kobe Emmerich 2024-03-13

The car exhibited several issues, including three Pirelli tires bursting unexpectedly. The tires were found to be faulty, and the service provided by the agents was subpar. Based on this experience, I have decided not to purchase another BMW in the future.

  3. Ervin Breitenberg 2024-01-24

Your X7 is beautifully finished inside and out, with superb road manners and unbeatable comfort. However, the technology can be overwhelming with numerous unprompted options that require attention and can become annoying. The climate controls require manual adjustment of the fan speed, which can be mystifying given all the technology available that is seldom needed or used. Accidentally pressing the speed limit control and anti-rolling buttons (which is easy to do) can be disconcerting. We understand your frustration and will work to ensure that your driving experience is as smooth and enjoyable as possible.

Positive 2021 Bmw X7 car reviews

  1. Giovanny Skiles 2024-10-18

Now that the kids are gone, there are no more interior colors to hide spills and crumbs. The 6-cylinder engine runs very smoothly. Although I usually prefer 8-cylinder vehicles for their quick pick-up, this car is still very quick and you don't really need the extra cylinders. When we had an X7 loaner while our car was being serviced, we noticed that the 8-cylinder engine was much louder inside, which is a drawback. Since we already own a BMW, we quickly got used to the idrive system. I love the leather interior throughout the car, and there's enough room for six passengers - the grandkids love the 3rd row. On a recent 1000-mile round trip to a wedding with 4 adults (including my 7-foot-tall son) and two wives who are 5'10, we found the car to be more comfortable than a first-class flight. The only downside is that my wife has been driving a Yukon XL for 30 years, so she was surprised by the lack of interior storage - the center bin is quite small. On the wedding trip, we had to pack luggage for 8 people since the kids flying didn't want to check bags at the airport. It was an engineering marvel to fit everything in, but we managed. One pleasant surprise was that the under-trunk spare tire area has a lot of storage space, so you don't really need the spare.

Congratulations on your purchase of a 2021 CPO with only 5k miles! It's great to hear that you've been enjoying the drive, especially after having driven so many SUVs over the last 20 years. The X7 seems to have left a lasting impression on you, with its smooth and refined engine, spacious and comfortable cabin, and quiet ride. While it's unfortunate that there isn't more under cabin storage space, it's good to know that the space offered is being put to good use storing the cargo cover.

This is, without a doubt, the best car I have ever driven. It is incredibly smooth, fast, and comfortable. My family is thrilled for me, and my kids absolutely love it. I have owned many different types of cars, including BMWs, Benzes, Audis, Range Rovers, and Teslas, but this SUV is truly exceptional! The acceleration is so powerful that it easily overtakes slow drivers who try to speed up when I pass them. They don't stand a chance! :)

The M Sport package is a great addition to the X7. I found the ride to be incredibly smooth, so much so that I had to keep checking my speed to make sure I wasn't going too fast! The car is packed with features and technology that make driving an absolute dream.

The car has an impressive power of 523 horses! Although it belongs to my wife, I get to drive it on occasion. The interior is simply awesome! We previously had the X5, but it was a bit cramped for me. The X7, on the other hand, has a ton more room! The V8 engine produces a rumble that reminds me of the power this car has! In my opinion, the sound system and the 2nd row captain chairs are a must-have. I'm excited for a road trip! Although it's hard to resist the temptation to speed!
