2022 Volkswagen Id.4 problems

volkswagen logo

The Volkswagen ID.4 and Volkswagen ID.5 are battery electric compact crossover SUVs produced by Volkswagen. Based on the MEB platform, the ID.4 is the second model of the Volkswagen ID. series. The production version of the ID.4 debuted in September 2020 as the first fully-electric crossover SUV under the Volkswagen brand, while the coupe-shaped variant of the ID.4 (akin to the Audi Q8 Sportback e-tron) is marketed as the Volkswagen ID.5 and was revealed in November 2021.

The ID.4 is positioned by Volkswagen as a high-volume, mass-market electric vehicle — a car for "the millions, not the millionaires," as the company claimed in its advertising. It was delivered to European customers from late 2020, and the first quarter of 2021 for the North American market.

The ID.4 was elected World Car of the Year 2021 over runner-ups Honda e and Toyota Yaris.

The vehicle was updated for the 2024 model year; this includes a new, more powerful electric motor.

Common 2022 Volkswagen Id.4 problems

The Volkswagen ID.4, a popular electric vehicle (EV) introduced in 2022, has been praised for its sleek design and modern gadgetry. However, like any other vehicle, it is not without its share of issues. Here are some of the most common problems reported by owners of the Volkswagen ID.4:

  • Software System: The software system in the ID.4 has been criticized for its basic graphics, clunky user experience, and slow response times. Some owners have reported inconsistent greetings when entering the vehicle and slow and irritating voice controls.
  • Hardware Issues: Some ID.4 owners have reported issues with the plastic button on the driver's side floormat and the tab for the rear-seat HVAC vent breaking. These issues were not addressed during service appointments.
  • Braking Behavior: While some ID.4 owners have reported no issues with the braking behavior, others have reported seconds- to minutes-long delays in getting CarPlay fired up and strange braking behavior.

In summary, the Volkswagen ID.4, while a sleek and modern EV, has some common problems that owners have reported. These issues include engine stalling, infotainment system glitches, software system problems, hardware issues, and braking behavior. While some of these issues have been addressed through software updates and recalls, others may require more extensive repairs. It is essential for potential ID.4 owners to be aware of these issues and consider them when making a purchasing decision.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-14
  • VIN: WVGGNPE28NP
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: In the VW ID.4, one can retract the rear-view mirrors, making the car a bit narrower, for example for parking. Multiple times, I have started the car and been unable to extend the rear-view mirrors. Not only can I not use the rear-view mirrors, but also, I am distracted trying to figure out how to make them extend. For example, I turn the switch multiple times and failing that, I LOOK at the switch (instead of the road) to verify that I am moving the correct item. This problem has been temporarily mitigated by pulling over, turning off the car, and re-starting it.

STRUCTURE,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-11
  • VIN: WVGTMPE20NP
  • Components: STRUCTURE,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: I am writing to report two concerning safety issues with my vehicle: Repeated Door Clicking During Car Wash: On multiple occasions while driving through an automatic car wash, I have noticed that the car doors repeatedly click, as if attempting to unlock or open. This erratic behavior occurs despite no input from the driver or passengers, raising concerns about the vehicle’s electrical system and its reliability under normal operating conditions. Speedometer Malfunction: More critically, the instrument panel, including the speedometer, has gone completely black while driving. The panel remains non-functional for 5-10 minutes before rebooting on its own, leaving me unable to see my speed or other critical driving information during this period. This issue poses a significant risk to my safety as well as the safety of others on the road. Both issues are unpredictable and have occurred multiple times, making the vehicle unsafe under certain conditions. I kindly request your assistance in investigating these problems to ensure that no further safety hazards arise.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-15
  • VIN: WVGUNPE28NP
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: My complaint is that VW has not fixed a recall in a timely manner. I am writing in reference to recall number 24v344. This is a software recall that was initiated almost 4 months ago and has not been addressed. This diminishes the value of the vehicle and makes it unusable for my purposes. In addition, there is a second new recall for #24V651. This is the second time there have been issues with the door handles and possible water ingress. There was a previous recall on this issue which required inspection by the dealer and my vehicle was not affected. VW has had plenty of time to address this issue since the same issue was present on the last recall. I use this vehicle in a rental business with Turo. I am unable to rent a vehicle with any open recalls.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-17
  • VIN: WVGGNPE28NP
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: The seals/bonding on the rear right tail light assembly failed under normal use. Water has recently accumulated in the assembly and caused part of the taillight to stop functioning. In addition to apparent defect in integrity of the light housing, it is likely that there is a secondary defect in the conformal coating that lead to the water being able to damage the light. The internal light monitoring feature also did not detect the failed light element until several days after we identified it was broken. Dealer is attempting to reject coverage for something that should clearly fall under manufacturing and workmanship warranty.

WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-29
  • VIN: WVGTMPE25NP
  • Components: WHEELS
  • Summary: I recently did a 20,000 miles service on my vehicle and was told the Bridgestone Alenza tires I have on the vehicle are at a level unsafe to drive - under 3/32. These are the tires that came with the vehicle. The VW person informed me that these tires are unfit for an EV and VW stopped installing them. I reported this to a friend who has the same car but with 16,000 miles, he got the car checked, and got the same answer- unsafe to operate. There are potentially tens of thousands of ID.4 vehicles out there that came out in 2021 and 2022 that have these tires on, driving on tires that are unsafe to operate because nobody expects tires to be that bad after less than 20k miles. These should be recalled. I have reported this to VW customer service. VW is unwilling to take any responsibility for this issue. They told me to go talk to the manufacturer (Bridgestone).

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-03
  • VIN: WVGGNPE23NP
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: During a recent trip to Oregon, my Volkswagen ID.4 experienced a critical failure of both the interior and exterior lighting systems, including the headlights and emergency lights. Initially, upon returning from a walk, I found the lights were on despite the vehicle being locked and not in the "Auto" mode as I had left them. Locking and unlocking the vehicle did not resolve the issue. When I entered the vehicle, a warning light indicating a malfunction in the lighting system appeared on the dashboard, and subsequently, all lights stopped functioning entirely. This malfunction posed a significant safety risk to both myself and other road users, as the failure occurred during a time when proper lighting was essential for visibility and safety, potentially leading to a dangerous situation, especially as it was almost evening. The problem has not been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center at this time. The vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives, or other relevant parties, although a video recording of the incident is available for review and is attached to the report in the PDF file. Prior to the failure, there were no warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms indicating a potential issue. However, during the incident, a warning light for a lighting system malfunction appeared on the dashboard.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-05-13
  • Number Of Injuries: 2
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: WVGKMPE21NP
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: On 5/13/2023, I drove using adaptive cruise control (ACC). I traveled approximately 9 miles without issues and turned left into a parking lot. Upon turning, the break was engaged and which canceled the cruise control. I do not recall the exact speed it was set but it was over 50mph. I drive my VW ID.4 in B mode which is brake energy recuperation mode and brakes the car as soon as the foot is lifted from the accelerator. In the parking lot, I was driving at a slow rate of speed because it was a Saturday morning and there were lots of kids going to the Jui Jitsu gym and dance studio which was my destination. While navigating at this slow speed, I typical lift my foot off of the accelerator rather than tapping the brakes as it is an effective method in the B driving mode. I was turning right into a spot, my foot was on the accelerator because there is not coasting in this mode to turn into the spot. As I was turning the wheel hard to the right, my hand grazed the capacitive controls of the ACC and resumed the cruise control causing my car to suddenly accelerate at the previously set speed into the curbing. As mentioned, my foot was on the accelerator as I was pulling into the spot. When the car crashed into the sidewalk the impact caused my foot to depress further on the accelerator which caused a secondary impact into a support pillar further on the sidewalk. Fortunately, the pillar was there, otherwise, I would have crashed through the yoga studio directly behind the pillar which had a full class going. I also narrowly missed a father and son walking on the sidewalk to Jui Jitsu. I notifed VW and they analyzed the black box but claimed the accident to be my fault since the accelerator pedal was engaged, and I did not break until after impact. I do not dispute that.

The vehicle failed to start as needed. While the vehicle was idling, all the doors were locked, with the contact holding a key fob. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the sensor needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V344000 (Back Over Prevention, Equipment, Electric System); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-16
  • VIN: WVGJNPE22NP
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: My backup camera does not work and hasn't worked for almost a year. There is no solution, and it just now got recalled today, but there is no fix. It is incredibly dangerous to drive this car with the reduced size of the rear window plus wide, oversized quarter panels, and no backup camera. Add to this the fact that my driver's side door doesn't open. Not when I'm trying to get in to it and often when I'm trying to get out. I climb over the passenger seat every single time I want to get into the car and sometimes when I want to get out.

Negative 2022 Volkswagen Id.4 car reviews

I have experience with the ID 4 as a company car in Sweden and unfortunately, it has been the most unpleasant car experience of my life. The user interface is seriously flawed and it is just mind-boggling how VW, one of the world's biggest car makers, could launch something so expensive and still so horribly bad! The infotainment system totally lacks structure, making it a nightmare to use. The inner lighting is also a joke, and the motion sensor on/off is just totally senile. Maneuvering the windows and mirrors is also quite difficult. However, the Lane Assist system is the most dangerous feature of all. It tries to keep you

Goods: The car rides comfortably and smoothly, with a spacious back seat. At low speeds, it is impressively quiet. The exterior design is attractive and stands out among other EVs. The car's technology is user-friendly and offers a variety of features to make driving easier. Visibility is excellent, and the air conditioning works very well. Bads: Although the interior is sleek, the overuse of piano black can be a bit overwhelming. The infotainment system could be smoother compared to other competitors. The touch area for the volume and temperature controls is not illuminated, making it difficult to see at night. Fingerprints tend to show up easily on the infotainment screen. At speeds above 60 miles per hour, there is noticeable wind noise. The pedestrian sound at speeds under 20 miles per hour is louder than necessary and exceeds US standards. There are some design and assembly issues in certain areas that make you question the car's quality. The doors and hood are quite heavy.

It's great that VW is making an effort to produce an electric car, but there is definitely room for improvement. The electronics are decent, but the delayed charging could use some work as it is not consistent. The app is basic and could benefit from more features. Compared to similar cars, Hyundai seems to have better features. However, one plus point for the VW is the tax credit. It's worth noting that VW recommends charging up to 80% rather than 100%, which does limit the range but can help with usage in the long run.

As an experienced owner of several EV's and EV Hybrids, I can confidently say that the ID 4 is a decent EV. However, there are some areas that require improvement, such as the software. The touch screen can be glitchy and delayed at times, and the MyVW app is not up to par. Additionally, the estimated range is not always accurate, with a 10-15% discrepancy. On the positive side, the SUV offers ample space and the acceleration is satisfactory. While I purchased the ID 4 in Aug 2022 after a year-long wait, I am not entirely convinced that I would purchase another one based on my initial experience.

After only 7300 miles, my 2021 ID4 experienced a major engine failure that affected several other systems, including braking, steering, driver assist, hill holding, and even the proximity noise electric cars make. Despite the inconvenience, I am pleased to report that VW promptly replaced the motor and ultimately agreed to buy back the car after 5 months. While VW offered me extra cash to purchase another VW, I have decided not to take the risk based on my 13-month experience with this car. It is important to note that the infotainment system can be confusing, and the climate control and radio controls are difficult to see in the dark. Additionally, the line of sight when making left turns is poor. In my opinion, the VW ID4 still requires further improvements before it is ready for the marketplace.

Positive 2022 Volkswagen Id.4 car reviews

As a fellow EV enthusiast, I recently test drove both the ID.4 and the Ford Mustang Mach-E as an upgrade from my Honda Clarity PHEV. While the Mach-E was impressive, the ID.4 was just as great without the added $5,000 dealer markup that Ford dealerships were charging. For my needs, the ID.4 was the better choice due to its comfortable ride and solid handling, which are more important to me than zero-to-60 time trials at my age. Additionally, the ID.4 is eligible for the $7,500 Federal tax credit, making it more affordable than luxury EVs in its class like the Tesla Models Y, the Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, and Volvo Recharge. Although it may lack some luxury features, it excels in comfort, ride, and handling, and offers more cargo space, a 4-year 50,000 mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, and 3 years of unlimited charging at the Electrify America charging network. While there were some initial issues with the Electrify America network, they have since improved significantly. The ID.4 also boasts better range than most of its competitors, except for the Teslas and the new Hyundai and Kia models. After two and a half years of driving in 80+ degree heat with the a/c on, I'm averaging 3.8 miles per kilowatt, well above the original estimated 2.9 mile/kWh, which translates to an estimated 275-mile range. With the tax credit, the ID.4 is also competitively priced with smaller and less well-equipped EVs like the Chevy Bolt and Bolt EUV, Leaf Plus, Kia Niro, and Hyundai Kona, none of which offer an AWD option or have tow-ratings. Overall, the ID.4 seems like the perfect choice for me.The ID.4 has found the sweet spot for an EV with more than adequate range for most drivers, whether for daily around-town commutes or taking extended family vacations to most parts of the country. Just note that for extended travel to some parts of the country, it's important to do your homework for availability of charging stations or networks. Its features and performance match or exceed most of its rivals, with competitive pricing and the best warranty aside from Hyundai and Kia. After the test drive, my wife said it was the best car she had ever driven, and I couldn't agree more. After a couple of weeks of driving, it still feels that way, and we're anticipating that will be the case for a long time to come. VW has also done some free software upgrades that make our ID.4 even better, with improved driving screen displays and driver and front passenger seats that slide back when exiting the vehicle and then slide forward to the last seating position when entering and powering up the vehicle for easier entry and exiting. And the massage features on both front seats are very nice, something rarely found outside of so-called luxury vehicles, and not on all of those. And, before you ask, no, it's not quite perfect. Many critics have justifiably harped on the infotainment system. Some of the controls are less-than-intuitive, making it dangerous for the driver to try and use while driving as you have to avert your eyes from the road. Using the voice-commands is the best solution for those moments, but it's definitely something VW needs to address in future models. After 27 months of owning and driving our ID.4, we are just as happy with it as the day we bought it. It has been completely reliable thus far and has been given Top Safety+ ratings by the IIHS. And we are averaging 3.8 miles per kilowatt hour or around 275 miles of range. It may not be the perfect vehicle for everyone, but for our driving habits and life, it does everything we ask it to do and more.Plus, you get the bonus perk of never having to pay for a single drop of gasoline again, at least not with a vehicle you own.

You've owned a dozen sedans, mostly Camry, Malibu, Impala etc. and this one might just be the best of the lot! It's very enjoyable and comfortable, and I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying the adaptive cruise control and the quietness. It sounds like a great road car! I understand that you looked at the Model 3 and Y, but couldn't justify the added price. From what you've said, it seems like Tesla overestimates their range estimates, while VW underestimates. I'm happy to hear that there are Electrify America stations in every major city in Ohio. It sounds like the Tesla is a good choice if you're looking for the brand or speed, but for those who aren't, the VW is a great option. When the sedan version comes out, it sounds like you'll be interested in buying that too. I'm glad to hear that your wife loves it!

  3. Efren Braun 2024-10-05

The all Electric ID4 has been a joy to own and operate. We added a home 220v fast charger to make charging more realistic, as the 120v charger that comes with the car is almost worthless, giving about 3 miles of charge per hour. It's really nice that the car comes with free 3 years of Electrify America charging. Although not all features are intuitive, we're enjoying discovering new little features almost every time we drive!

Auto pilot is not as good as expected, but the driver experience is awesome!

  5. Frank Waters 2024-09-08

An EV that doesn't require putting up with strange funky stuff or sacrificing capability. There is plenty of space, and it still manages to handle corners like a German car should, yet it's also surprisingly comfortable over bumps. It tows great, and just because it's electric doesn't mean you need to forgo a roof rack. Installing one on the roof is quick and easy.
