2012 Volkswagen Golf problems
The Volkswagen Golf is a compact car/small family car (C-segment) produced by the German automotive manufacturer Volkswagen since 1974, marketed worldwide across eight generations, in various body configurations and under various nameplates – including as the Volkswagen Rabbit in the United States and Canada (Mk1 and Mk5), and as the Volkswagen Caribe in Mexico (Mk1).
The original Golf Mk1 was a front-engined, front-wheel drive replacement for the air-cooled, rear-engined, rear-wheel drive Volkswagen Beetle. Historically, the Golf is Volkswagen's best-selling model and is among the world's top three best-selling models, with more than 35 million units sold as of 2019.
Initially, most Golfs were 3-door hatchbacks. Other variants include a 5-door hatchback, estate (Variant, from 1993), convertible (Cabriolet and Cabrio, 1979–2002, Cabriolet, 2011–present), and a Golf-based saloon, called the Jetta, Vento (from 1992) or Bora (from 1999). The Golf covers economy to high-performance market segments.
The Golf has won awards, including the World Car of the Year in 2009, with the Mk6 and in 2013 with the Mk7. Along with the Renault Clio and the Vauxhall Astra, the Golf is one of only three cars to have won European Car of the Year twice, in 1992 and 2013. The Golf has made the annual Car and Driver 10Best list multiple times. The Mk7 won the Motor Trend Car of the Year award in 2015, and the Mk1 GTI also won the award in 1985. The Mk4 won for the best-selling car in Europe in 2001.

Common 2012 Volkswagen Golf problems
The Volkswagen Golf 2012 has been known to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. Here are some of the issues:
- Rattling Sound from Engine: There may be a rattling sound that can be heard when starting the engine, which disappears after driving for a few miles and then reappears at random intervals. This issue is caused by the camshaft-driven high-pressure fuel pump, which should be replaced every 20k miles even if the rattling sound is not audible.
- The Car Has Gone into Limp Mode: The Golf may suddenly go into Limp Mode while driving, which is likely due to a faulty water pump. This issue can be resolved by replacing the water pump with a spare one, which is easy to find and replace.
- Rough Gear Changes (Automatics): The automatic gear changes may not be smooth, which is a common issue in Golfs, especially earlier models. In most cases, the gearbox unit needs to be replaced completely. However, before doing that, it is recommended to check the timing chain, as it might have snapped.
- Rear Boot Locking Problems: If you are facing problems with locking the boot on your Golf, it is likely due to a cracked and leaking brake servo pipe. This issue can be resolved by ordering a replacement from an online store and installing the new pipe.
- Hot ABS Unit: The ABS unit may overheat, even during short journeys, due to an electrical fault in the ABS control unit. This issue can lead to a fire if left untreated, and it is common in Golfs built between 1997 and 2004. A replacement ABS unit can be found using an online store's parts page, and the faulty one can be removed and replaced with a new one.
- Grinding from Rear: A grinding noise may come from the rear of the car while driving, indicating faulty rear axles. This issue is common in Golfs built between 1997 and 2004 and can be resolved by replacing the entire rear axle.
- Faulty Seat Belt Pre-Tensioner: The seat belt pre-tensioner may discharge excessive heat when put to use, causing a fire risk. This issue is common in Golfs produced between 1997 and 2004, and replacement seat belt pre-tensioners can be found on an online store's parts list.
- Struggle to Get Fifth Gear: The gearstick may require force to get into 5th gear, but there is no problem with the other gears. This issue can be resolved by checking the gearbox oil levels and replacing any faulty or broken gear linkage or cables.
These common problems in the Volkswagen Golf 2012 are based on complaints from owners and are not exhaustive. It is always recommended to consult the vehicle's manual and seek professional advice when experiencing any issues with the car.
Is 2012 a good year for VW Golf?
Overall, though, we think very highly of the 2012 VW Golf and find that its added cost in TDI guise is justified by its impressive fuel mileage, added refinement and details that won't show up if you simply compare the features of one car to another.
Do VW Golf have transmission problems?
Over time, the gearbox in automatic Golf models can wear out and start to judder intermittently. This is a sign of failure in the mechatronic unit, also known as the control centre of the gearbox. Look out for the following symptoms: Loss of power when changing gear.
How long will a VW Golf engine last?
Most Volkswagen vehicles will last between 100,000 and 200,000 miles, although well-kept models can last even longer than that. All VWs are remarkably reliable vehicles. When it comes to longevity, the Golf, Passat, Jetta, and Beetle are known to be particularly long-lasting.
Is Volkswagen Golf high maintenance?
According to RepairPal, Volkswagen maintenance costs are only slightly more expensive than average. Volkswagen maintenance and repairs cost about $676 per year while the industry average is $652.

Is VW Golf a good car to buy?
Yes, it's the Volkswagen Golf, the 'hear hooves, think horses' of family hatchbacks. It's an industry benchmark. A vanguard in the battle against the overdone, overblown and ostentatious. An easy (and possibly lazy) recommendation given by all car people to non-car people when they simply need 'a car'.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-05-19
- VIN: Wvwnm7aj2cw
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: At first, my vehicle dashboard warning light came on saying I have 9 different lights out(headlight, high beam, brake light, turn signals, etc). I thought it was odd for all these to go out at once, so I took it to the dealership for them to look at it. They couldn’t find anything and gave it back. It went off for a while but then the warning lights came back on. I again took it to the dealership, they told me I would have to leave it for an unknown amount of time for them to look at it. I wasn’t able to do that because it was my only motive transportation. After looking online to see if anyone else had the same issue I found multiple people who said they have the same issue. The fuse box under the hood has begun to melt, which affected the green 30 fuse which was almost completely melted. I replaced that fuse with a new one and that fixed the warning lights. I feel it is still a safety issue because the fuse box is going to continue to melt which could produce a fire.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-06-06
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- Crash: 1
- VIN: WVWAB7AJ0CW
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: My vehicle struck a car from behind moving about 35 mph. Air bags did not deploy and I had a proceeding next injury. Why did the airbags not deploy? I have read that "A loss of electrical connection to the driver's frontal air bag will prevent the air bag from deploying in the event of a vehicle crash, increasing the risk of injury" for 2011-2014 Golf. I would like confirmation that this was supposed to happen, no airbag deployment. My car was totaled.
EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-10-03
- VIN: WVWNM7AJ7CW
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: INTERMITTENTLY, DASHBOARD MFD WOULD INDICATE THAT ALL EXTERIOR LIGHTS FAILED. SHUT OFF ENGINE AND PULLED OUT KEY. INSERTED KEY AND RESTARTED AND ALL WOULD BE FINE. GOT TO THE POINT THAT LIGHTS WERE IN FACT NOT WORKING. PULLED OUT FUSES AND WHEN I PULLED THE 30A FUSE (F16?) I NOTICED THE FUSE AND FUSE BOX WAS MELTED. I CLEANED THE CONTACTS ON THE FUSE WITH SANDPAPER AND A WIRE BRUSH. I ATTEMPTED TO USE THE BRUSH ON THE FUSE BOX BUT TO NO AVAIL. I INSERTED THE FUSE BACK IN AND THE LIGHTS WORKED. NEXT MORNING, I TURNED THE KEY ON AND MFD INDICATED ALL THE LIGHTS WERE NOT WORKING. I OPENED THE HOOD AND FUSE BOX AND WIGGLED THE FUSE. WORKED ALL THE WAY TO AND FROM WORK. FOUND TWO VW FORUMS DISCUSSED THIS SAME ISSUE. MOST WERE TIGUANS. PICTURES ARE THE FUSE BOX AND THE FRONT AND REAR LIGHTS BEFORE I CLEANED THE FUSE. THE CAR WAS STATIONARY WHEN I WAS WORKING ON IT.*DT *TR

MY VEHICLE HAS BEEN MAKING A TERRIBLE NOISE WHEN I TURN THE WHEEL IN EITHER DIRECTION, WHICH VW ATTRIBUTES TO THE CLOCK-SPRING. THEY TOLD ME THE 2012 GOLF TDI MODEL IS NOT COVERED UNDER THE RECALL BUT APPARENTLY THIS CLOCK-SPRING PROBLEM IMPACTS OTHER MODELS. THEY WARNED THE PROBLEM WILL GET WORSE AND EVENTUALLY IMPACT THE STEERING, AIRBAG, TURN SIGNALS, HORN, AND OTHER ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS INSIDE THE STEERING WHEEL. THEY QUOTED THE COST TO REPLACE THE CLOCK-SPRING IS $890. SO MY QUESTION IS CAN THE RECALL BE BROADENED TO INCLUDE 2012 GOLF TDIS AS WELL?
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-06-30
- VIN: WVWDM7AJ8CW
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: TAKATA RECALL - RECEIVED NOTICE OVER 18 MONTHS AGO THAT THE PASSENGER AIRBAG NEEDS TO BE REPLACED BUT HAVE NOT RECEIVED INFORMATION THAT A NEW AIRBAG IS AVAILABLE. WHAT IS TAKING SO LONG? THIS ISSUE NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED FOR THE PASSENGERS IN MY CAR.

THE ENGINE WOULD NOT RESTART AND THE "COILS" WARNING LIGHT WAS ILLUMINATED IN THE DASH BOARD. SEVERAL ATTEMPTS WERE MADE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE AS WE WAITED FOR A TOW TRUCK. THE PROBLEM WAS WITH A FAILURE OF THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP (HPFP). THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP. WE WERE WITHOUT A VEHICLE FOR OVER A WEEK AS THE FUEL WAS BEING TESTED FOR CONTAMINATION (WHICH THERE WAS NONE) AND WAITING APPROVAL FROM VOLKSWAGEN FOR APPROVAL UNDER WARRANTY COVERAGE. - Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: WHEN STARTING MY GOLF TDI I RECEIVED SEVERAL WARNING MESSAGES ON THE CAR'S INFORMATION SCREEN TO CHECK TURNING LIGHTS, BRAKE LIGHTS, HEADLIGHTS AND RUNNING LIGHTS ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE OF THE CAR. THE RIGHT HAND HEADLIGHTS, TURN SIGNALS AND BRAKELIGHTS WERE OUT. THE CAUSE OF THE FAULT WAS A MELTED FUSEBOX. THE INTERNAL WIRING OF THE FUSEBOX OVERHEATED AND MELTED THE PLASTIC OF THE BOX AND THE PLASTIC OF THE FUSE WITHOUT BREAKING THE CIRCUIT. ACCORDING TO MY REPAIR SHOP, THIS IS A DESIGN FLAW AFFLICTING AS MANY AS ONE MILLION VWS OF VARIOUS YEARS. I SAW THAT VW HAS INITIATED RECALLS FOR THIS PROBLEM WITH OTHER MODELS, BUT NOT THE GOLF OR GOLF TDIS. THIS FAULT CAN CAUSE THE VEHICLE TO LOSE PARTIAL OR TOTAL HEADLIGHTS AND TURN SIGNALS, CREATING A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY HAZARD FOR DRIVERS AND OTHER VEHICLES. *TR

- Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain model year 2010-2014 Volkswagen CC, and Passat, 2010-2013 Eos, 2011-2014 Golf, GTI, Jetta, and Tiguan, and 2012-2014 Jetta Sportwagen vehicles. In the affected vehicles, debris may contaminate the air bag clock spring, a spiral wound, flat cable that keeps the air bag powered while the steering wheel is being turned. This contamination may tear the cable and result in a loss of electrical connection to the driver's frontal air bag.
- Consequence: A loss of electrical connection to the driver's frontal air bag will prevent the air bag from deploying in the event of a vehicle crash, increasing the risk of injury.
- Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will install a protective cover over the steering wheel clock spring if the air bag light is off. If the airbag light is on and the steering wheel clock spring requires replacement, dealers will install a new steering wheel clock spring. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on January 15, 2016. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-822-8987.
- Manufacturer: VOLKSWAGEN OF AMERICA, INC
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, DIESEL
- Summary: VOLKSWAGEN IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL 2009-2012 JETTA AND JETTA SPORTWAGEN VEHICLES, MANUFACTURED FROM MAY 2008 THROUGH SEPTEMBER 2011, MODEL YEAR 2010-2012 VOLKSWAGEN GOLF VEHICLES, MANUFACTURED FROM MAY 2009 THROUGH SEPTEMBER 2011, AND MODEL YEAR 2010-2012 AUDI A3 VEHICLES, MANUFACTURED FROM SEPTEMBER 2009 THROUGH SEPTEMBER 2011, THAT ARE EQUIPPED WITH A 2.0L TDI COMMON RAIL DIESEL ENGINE/CLEAN DIESEL ENGINE. THE FUEL INJECTION PULSES COULD COINCIDE WITH THE NATURAL FREQUENCY OF THE INJECTOR LINE #2, IN SPECIFIC LOAD AND RPM CONDITIONS. THIS RESONANCE CREATES ADDITIONAL STRESS IN THE FUEL LINE.
- Consequence: DUE TO THE RESONANCE CONDITION, INJECTOR LINE NUMBER 2 COULD DEVELOP SMALL CRACKS WHICH COULD LEAD TO FUEL LEAKAGE. LEAKING FUEL IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE, MAY LEAD TO A FIRE.
- Remedy: VOLKSWAGEN WILL INSTALL AN IMPROVED FUEL INJECTOR LINE FOR THE NUMBER 2 CYLINDER ON CERTAIN VEHICLES AND WILL INSTALL VIBRATION DAMPERS ON ALL OF THE INJECTOR LINES. VOLKSWAGEN AND AUDI WILL NOTIFY OWNERS TO HAVE THE VEHICLES REPAIRED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING NOVEMBER 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT VOLKSWAGEN AT 1-800-822-8987.
Negative 2012 Volkswagen Golf car reviews
Positive 2012 Volkswagen Golf car reviews
-
I've owned this car for about 6 months and have put 5000 miles on it. I noticed that some reviews claimed the car returned an average MPG rating of over 44 mpg, but my average since owning the car is 35mpg. While it's not as high as others have claimed, it's still very good and higher than the 34mpg EPA estimate. The car is fun to drive for a front-wheel-drive economy car. The only issue I've encountered with the car is the steering. Since I've had the car, the steering wheel needs to be turned slightly left to drive straight. The dealer said it was due to a crown in the road; however, it still requires the wheel to be turned to the left even on flat roads without crowns.

I am extremely pleased with this purchase, and the engine in particular has exceeded my expectations. During my drive from Montreal to Chicago, with mostly highway driving, I achieved an impressive average of 49+ miles per gallon (4.7 litres / 100km), with peak segments reaching 57 mpg. This was achieved mostly at ~70 mph, without the use of cruise control. I also took a detour for curves and hills, and was impressed with the torque and suspension. While the seats were uncomfortable for my elderly and extremely skinny dad after an hour of sitting, this was easily solved with a thick extra cushion. Overall, I am confident in recommending this vehicle, and any suggested improvements are minor.

Looking for an economical daily driver, I ended up with a TDI Golf and I couldn't be happier. With 160,000 miles on it, it still feels almost as refined as my BMW 335i weekend toy. I've never had any major mechanical problems and it starts fine even at -20C (although it can have some difficulty in colder temperatures, which is to be expected with a diesel). The range is phenomenal and the interior and performance of this Golf far exceeded my expectations. I was originally considering a Toyota for their reputation for reliability, but the Golf's interior and performance won me over. While it may not be a BMW, it's top-notch for its price point with excellent fit and finish. I opted for the DSG transmission and it's been great - seamlessly changing gears at the right time. As my first ever diesel car, I was expecting it to be rough, slow, and loud, but it's the complete opposite. Once up to temperature, the engine runs very smoothly, the acceleration is decent (almost similar to a GTI I once owned), and cabin noise is extremely low. Speaking of my GTI, the one I owned was a complete lemon, but this TDI has made me forgive Volkswagen.

The Golf TDI handles really well. Although we don't get much rain or snow here in Los Angeles, I have driven in some rain and the Golf does well with OEM Conti's. The brakes are great and it handles really well. Some people talk about it being stiff, but compared to my other car, a Dodge Cummns truck, the Golf is a huge improvement. The visibility from all windows is great, and the Bluetooth works pretty well. The radio (non dyna) is good for stock, and I use my iPod. When I need directions, I use Bluetooth to hear phone Navi (non navigation head unit). The fun factor is very high and the fuel mileage is incredible.

I am amazed that any negative reviews exist for this car. Personally, I have nothing but positive things to say about it. Where do I even begin? This car has been trouble-free for nearly 150,000 miles and I get an impressive 44 mpg, allowing me to go over 600 miles on a single tank. The storage space in the back is abundant, especially when the seats are laid down. The car feels solidly built and the interior is well-crafted. It is an absolute pleasure to drive, whether it's uphill, on long drives, or anywhere else. I have only had to replace the battery once and the rear latch gave out 5000 miles ago, with a total repair cost of only $200. At around $25k, this car has been an absolute steal. I am truly saddened that I have to give it back with the buy-back program, otherwise I would drive it until the wheels fall off. My German auto maintenance guy even said that these TDI engines can last virtually forever if you take care of them. It's a shame we'll never know. In about 60 days, I will have to say goodbye to my wonderful car and buy something I have no business owning: a Corvette Stingray. :)

This vehicle is unfortunately caught up in the VW emissions scandal, but I have found it to be a reliable car that gets 35-40mpg. The turbo provides a nice boost of power, especially for climbing hills in the Rocky Mountains. The sunroof is a great feature, just remember to close it when it rains! As a taller driver at 6'2
