2005 Pontiac Gto problems
The Pontiac GTO is a front-engine, rear-drive, two-door, four-passenger automobile manufactured and marketed by the Pontiac division of General Motors over four generations from 1963 until 1974 in the United States — with a fifth generation made by GM's Australian subsidiary, Holden, for the 2004 through 2006 model years.
The first generation of the GTO is credited with popularizing the muscle car market segment in the 1960s. The Pontiac GTO is considered by some to have started the trend with all four domestic automakers offering a variety of competing models.
For the 1964 and 1965 model years, the GTO was an optional package on the intermediate-sized Pontiac Lemans. The 1964 GTO vehicle identification number (VIN) started with 22, while the 1965 GTO VIN started with 237. The GTO became a separate model from 1966 through 1971 (VIN 242...). It became an optional package again for the 1972 and 1973 intermediate LeMans. For 1974, the GTO was an optional trim package on the compact-sized Ventura.
The GTO was selected as the Motor Trend Car of the Year in 1968.
The GTO model was revived from 2004 to 2006 model years as a captive import for Pontiac, a left-hand drive version of the Holden Monaro, itself a coupé variant of the Holden Commodore.

For 2005, Pontiac slid the LS2 6.0-liter V8 under the hood, good for 400 hp. Blasting from zero to 60 in less than 5.5 seconds and blitzing the quarter-mile in under 14 ticks means a 2005 Pontiac GTO will simply embarrass nearly any old Goat you could name.
Why did Pontiac stop making the GTO?
Production stopped in mid-2009, following the GM decision to suspend the Pontiac brand.” General Motors (GM) stopped making the Pontiac GTO and Chevy SS. Why was this decision made? They sold too few to be profitable.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-08-20
- VIN: 6G2VX12U35L
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: MY DRIVER SIDE DOOR HAS FLUNG OPEN SEVERAL TIMES DUE TO THE WINDOW TRACK COMING UNGLUED FROM THE GLASS. IT HAS HAPPENED AT DRIVE UP WINDOWS, DRIVING DOWN THE STREET/HIGHWAY AND EVEN HAS FLUNG OPEN THE DOOR IN A TURN BEFORE. IN THE 2004-2006 PONTIAC GTOS BOTH FRONT SIDE WINDOWS COME DETACHED FROM THEIR FORWARD MOST BRACKET THAT KEEPS THE WINDOWS IN THEIR TRACKS. WHEN THIS HAPPENS IT ALLOWS THE WINDOW TO MOVE AND APPLY PRESSURE ONTO THE DOOR RELEASE MECHANISM OR LINKAGE. THERE HAVE BEEN TIMES WHERE WHILE ROLLING DOWN THE WINDOW IT HITS THE LINKAGE TO OPEN THE DOOR AND THE DOOR OPENS. IF GOING THROUGH A TURN AND ROLLING DOWN THE WINDOW THE DOOR CAN FLY OPEN AND YOU CAN POSSIBLY FALL OUT. ALSO IF THE DOOR OPENS INTO TRAFFIC OF SOME SORT LIKE IN CLOSE QUARTERS ON A 2 LANE ROAD THE VEHICLES DOOR COULD BE STRUCK AND INJURE THE DRIVER OR PASSENGER DEPENDING ON WHICH DOOR IS CURRENTLY AFFECTED.
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-02-15
- VIN: 6G2VX12U05L
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: MY STEERING WHEEL LOCKED UP IN MY YARD, HAVING TO GET IT TOWED TO THE PONTIAC SERVICE DEPARTMENT PAYING OVER $2,000 TO GET IT FIX. THEN AFTER A YEAR IT LOCKED UP AGAIN. BEEN SITTING IN MY GARAGE EVERY SINCE. I DON'T HAVE THAT TYPE OF MONEY TO CONTINUE TO GET THE PROBLEM FIX IF IT'S GONNA KEEP OCCURRING.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2011-05-15
- VIN: 6G2VX12UX5L
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: PARKING BRAKE ENGAGES WITHOUT WARNING WHILE VEHICLE IS UNDERWAY. WHILE THE VEHICLE IS UNDERWAY AT 30MPH IN A STRAIGHT LINE, WITH NO WARNING, ONE OR BOTH OF THE PARKING (EMERGENCY) BRAKES MAY ENGAGE, LOCKING THE REAR WHEEL(S), AND CAUSING THE CAR TO SLOW ABRUPTLY OR SKID. THE CAR HAS TO BE DRIVEN WITH THE EMERGENCY BRAKES ENGAGED TO A SAFE PLACE OUT OF TRAFFIC. ONCE STOPPED, THE CONDITION CAN BE CLEARED BY DEPRESSING AND HOLDING THE PARKING BRAKE LATCH BUTTON AND VIGOROUSLY PUMPING THE HANDLE UP AND DOWN. ONCE THIS HAS HAPPENED, THE PARKING BRAKE (A FUNCTION PERFORMED BY THE EMERGENCY BRAKES) NO LONGER ENGAGES CONSISTENTLY. SEVERAL MECHANICAL DISASSEMBLIES AND INSPECTIONS HAVE NOT UNCOVERED THE CAUSE, NOR FULLY FIXED THE EMERGENCY BRAKES. A SINGLE, C-SHAPED, ONE-PIECE BRAKE SHOE THAT CONTACTS A DRUM BUILT WITHIN THE REAR BRAKE ROTOR PERFORMS THE EMERGENCY BRAKE FUNCTION ON EACH REAR WHEEL. AN EXPANDER SITS BETWEEN THE ENDS OF THE C AND PRESSES THE ENDS OF THE BRAKE SHOE OUTWARD WHEN THE EMERGENCY BRAKE LEVER IS PULLED . THE DESIGN OF THIS EXPANDER LOOKS POSSIBLY FAULTY; LITTLE MORE THAN FRICTION APPARENTLY HOLDS IT IN POSITION WITH THE ENDS OF THE BRAKE SHOE. IF IT WERE TO LOSE CONTACT, OR FALL OUT OF POSITION, IT MIGHT CAUSE THE EMERGENCY BRAKE TO ENGAGE UNEXPECTEDLY. THE PHOTOS ARE ONES OF THE BRAKE SHOES AND ROTORS DISCUSSED, RECENTLY REPLACED (AGAIN) IN HOPES OF SOLVING THIS PROBLEM.

WHY HAS GM NOT PUT OUT A RECALL ON THIS DANGEROUS ISSUE? LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL WHEN THIS OCCURS. SOME ONE IS GOING TO GET HURT OR LOSE THEIR LIFE. I LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE THE FIRST TIME IT OCCURRED BUT MANAGED TO STAY ON THE ROAD.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2006-05-01
- VIN: 6G2VX12U15L
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: HAD THE CAR FOR LESS THAN A YEAR. PARKED IT AND WENT TO REMOVE MY KEY AND THE KEY FROZE IN THE IGNITION SWITCH. WAS TOLD BY DEALER SERVICE DEPARTMENT THAT IT WAS A KNOWN PROBLEM AND THAT THE PARTS WERE ON BACK ORDER. SIX WEEKS LATER I FINALLY GOT MY CAR BACK. SINCE THEN, REMOVING THE KEY FROM THE IGNITION SWITCH REQUIRES THE STEERING WHEEL BE PERFECTLY STRAIGHT AND JIGGLING THE KEY AS YOU ARE REMOVING IT. IT HAS GOTTEN WORSE IN THE PAST SEVERAL MONTHS AND THERE IS QUITE A BIT OF PLAY IN THE IGNITION SWITCH. MY MECHANIC ADVISED ME THAT IT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED AND THAT THE KEY AND IGNITION SWITCH ARE NO LONGER MANUFACTURED. I'M CONCERNED THAT AT SOME POINT SOON THE SWITCH WILL LOCK UP AGAIN WHILE THE CAR IS MOVING AND I WON'T BE ABLE TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL. *TR
STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2013-08-02
- VIN: 6G2VX12U75L
- Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: WHEN I PUT MY KEY INTO THE IGNITION, IT FROZE. I COULDN'T TURN THE KEY. I COULDN'T MOVE THE CAR. THE IGNITION WAS LOCKED UP. I TRIED JUST REPLACING THE IGNITION CYLINDER, BUT THAT DID NOT WORK. I HAD TO HAVE THE ENTIRE STEERING COLUMN REPLACED. IT COST $1371.67 TO GET THIS CAR FIXED DUE TO NO FAULT OF MY OWN. I HAVE RESEARCHED THIS ISSUE AND IT SEEMS THAT ON THE WEEK MY VEHICLE WAS IN THE SHOP, 3 OTHER PONTIACS WERE IN THE SAME SHOP, FOR THE EXACT SAME ISSUE. UPON DOING MORE RESEARCH ONLINE, I HAVE FOUND THAT NUMEROUS PEOPLE ARE EXPERIENCING THIS EXACT ISSUE. DUE TO NO FAULT OF MY OWN AND DUE TO INSUFFICIENT FAULTY PARTS IN THE IGNITION, I HAD TO HAVE THIS REPAIRED. I HAD TO HAVE MY CAR TOWED BECAUSE YOU CAN NOT MOVE THIS CAR OR PUT IT IN NEUTRAL TO GET THE VEHICLE TO MOVE OTHERWISE. FUNNY HOW IT FAILED 2 MONTHS AFTER MY WARRANTY EXPIRED! HOW IS THIS FAIR THAT THEIR PART FAILED AND YET THEY ARE TAKING TO RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS? THIS WAS A VERY EXPENSIVE FIX! PLEASE RECALL THE PONTIAC IGNITIONS! SO I AM OUT ALMOST $1500. BAD CALL GM! *TR
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2013-05-13

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2013-02-13
- VIN: 6G2VX12U75L
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS
- Summary: FEB 16TH 2013 CASE # [XXX] MY CAR WAS IN FOR THIS SERVICE FOR A AIRBAG FAULT LIGHT I WAS TOLD THAT "FOUND LOW VOLTAGE TO VARIOUS SRS COMPONENTS" AND THAT ACCORDING TO A GM SERVICES BULLETIN INSPECTION OF THE SRS WIRING SYSTEM BEHIND THE DASH IS NEEDED. ACCORDING TO THE DEALER THERE IS A GM SERVICE BULLETIN ON FAULTY WIRING HARNESS BEING THE CAUSE. THE AIRBAG SYSTEM COULD BE NOT WORKING. MY CONCERN IS WITH SAID SERVICES BULLETIN I COULD NOT FIND ANYONE IN THE NETWORK OF GTO OWNERS CLUBS THAT WERE GIVIN ANY NOTICE OF THIS. BUT I DID FIND ON THESE FORUMS THAT ONE PARTICULAR WIRING HARNESS COMES IN CONTACT WITH A METAL BRACE WHEN THE CARS WAS CONVERTED TO LEFT HAND DRIVE FOR SALE HERE THAT HAS CAUSED FIRES. WOULD NOT THIS BE A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE FOR WHICH EITHER GM OR NHTSA WOULD BE INVOLVED IN? GM ACKNOWLEDGED THE PROBLEM TO ME IN MY MANY EMAILS AND CONVERSATIONS WITH CUSTOMER SERVICE REPS ON THE PHONE BUT HAS NOT NOTIFIED OWNERS NOR WANTS TO FIX THE ISSUES. THE ISSUE OF THE AIRBAG FAILURE IS ANOTHER SAFETY CONCERN. GIVEN THE NATURE OF THESE FAILURES WHY WOULD NOT THIS BE HANDLED AS PART OF A SAFETY RECALL? SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2011-09-12
- VIN: 6G2VX12UX5L
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: I PURCHASED THIS CAR NEW IN 2005, I HAVE 38,000 MILES ON IT TODAY AND I AM ON MY THIRD SET OF TIRES AND FIFTH ALIGNMENT. MY TIRES ON THE REAR, WEAR SEVERELY ON THE INSIDE EACH TIME, SO I MORE CAREFULLY WATCHED AND HAD RECHECKING THE ALIGNMENT ON A REGULAR BASIS ALONG WITH TIRE ROTATION. THIS TIME I TOOK IT TO A DISCOUNT TIRE COMPANY AND THEY TOLD ME THAT THEY CAN NOT ALIGN THE REAR END AND ALL COMPONENTS LOOK GOOD, GO TO DEALER. I WENT TO DEALER AND SHOWED THEM THE SPECKS WHAT THE CAR WAS OUT AND THEY SAID THEY COULD DO THE ALIGNMENT. THEY DID A ALIGNMENT FOR A FEE AND TOLD ME IT NEED PARTS, FRONT CAMBER KIT, REAR NEEDS TWO BUSHINGS AND GM PART 1 ON THE EXPLODED VIEW KNOWN AS DIFFERENTIAL BRACKET WHICH HOLDS THE REAR END TOGETHER FOR A PRICE OF PARTS $1,249.00 AND LABOR $664.00 TOTAL $1913 AND ANOTHER FOUR WHEEL ALIGNMENT FOR JUST A LITTLE OVER $2,000.00. I SAID WHY ARE YOU CHARGING ME FOR AN ALIGNMENT IF YOU CAN NOT DO IT PROPERLY AND I HAD ALREADY GIVEN YOU THE ALIGNMENT SPECS FROM DISCOUNT TIRE COMPANY. THEY SAID ALL MACHINES ARE DIFFERENT AND WE HAVE TO DO OUR OWN. SO YOUR TELLING ME THAT THIS PROBLEM THAT I HAVE HAD SINCE NEW IS A STRUCTURAL PART FLAW THAT YOU HAVE NOT RECOGNIZED BEFORE BUT HAVE BEEN CHARGING ME FOR ALIGNMENTS AND TIRES MULTIPLE TIMES. NO, WE FEEL YOUR CAR GOT HIT ON THE RIGHT SIDE AND IT CAUSED THE DAMAGE. I SAID THE CAR HAS NEVER HIT ANYTHING AND IT IS A PREIGSITING PROBLEM FROM NEW THAT HAS BEEN OVER LOOKED AT MY EXPENSE. TOOK CAR TO A THIRD PARTY AND THEY SAID THERE ARE NO PARTS THAT ARE STRUCTURAL DAMAGED, THEY GOT ON LINE AND SAW ALL THE BLOGS FOR THIS IDENTICAL CONDITION AND THAT IS WHY I AM REPORTING THE PROBLEM. THE FIX IS CAMBER KIT FOR REAR FROM MANUFACTURE IN AUSTRALIA WHERE CAR IS MADE AND THEY HAVE BEEN AWARE OF FOR YEAR, PLEASE MAKE THIS A RECALL FROM GM. *TR

SUSPENSION,TIRES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2009-03-18
- VIN: 6G2VX12U85L
- Components: SUSPENSION,TIRES
- Summary: TIRES WEAR EXCESSIVELY ON MY 2005 GTO. TIRE FAILURE WAS DUE TO EXCESSIVE WEAR ON THE INSIDE EDGE. IT WAS NOT DETECTED BECAUSE IT ONLY OCCURS AT THE VERY INSIDE EDGE. TIRE FAILURE ON THE HIGHWAY OCCURRED AND WHEN TAKEN IN FOR SERVICE TO THE DEALER THEY NOTICED THE OTHER WAS SHOWING STEEL THROUGH AS WELL. THEY SAID IT WAS AN ALIGNMENT ISSUE. AFTER ALIGNMENT AND NEW TIRES THE CAR CONTINUES TO WEAR EXCESSIVELY. DEALER SAYS THEY DO NOT KNOW WHY. GM MUST DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS BEFORE A FATALITY OCCURS. *TR
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2010-05-07
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: THE FACTORY INSTALLED TIRES ON MY 2005 PONTIAC GTO RUB AGAINST THE STRUT MOUNTS CAUSING EXCESSIVE WEAR ON THE INSIDE LIP OF THE TIRE. I HAVE REPLACED TWO SETS OF TIRES WITH ONLY 15,000 MILES ON EACH SET. MY FATHER WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE WHEN THE MOST RECENT SET OF TIRES CAUSED ERRATIC STEERING CONDITIONS. HE WAS NOT INJURED, BUT THE RUBBER ON THE TIRES WAS SO SEVERELY DAMAGED FROM RUBBING ON THE STRUT MOUNTS THAT THE RUBBER WAS SEPARATED FROM THE STEEL BELT. THIS RUBBING COULD POTENTIALLY CAUSE A BLOWOUT WHICH WOULD BE VERY DANGEROUS AT THE HIGH SPEEDS THE GTO IS CAPABLE OF. THERE IS A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT IN CALIFORNIA CURRENTLY ON THIS ISSUE. I JUST WANT GM TO NOTIFY GTO OWNERS OF THIS PROBLEM, EVEN IF THEY ARE UNWILLING TO PONY UP THE CASH TO FIX THEIR OWN ENGINEERING BLUNDER. *TR

I recently purchased an 05 GTO with only 18K miles on it, and it came with the sport appearance package (SAP) which includes quad exhausts, cool side skirts, SAP front bumper and grills. The paint is a sleek Cyclone Gray. I also added a JHP color-matched gauge pod for volts and engine oil pressure, chrome tail lights with red LED's, chrome aluminum wheels, GM Performance high flow oil pump, headers and 160-degree therm. To improve performance, I use ALT friction modifier in my engine oil (6 oz.) and 1 oz. in my power steering. ALT claims a 48% reduction in friction, which is pretty impressive. I even removed the rear spoiler and painted the trunk lid for a more streamlined look. At 54K miles, I replaced the rotors and pads and also replaced the auto trans fluid and differential fluid with GM friction modifier.

The car is a blast to drive! While it could use a bit of styling help for the 06 model year, it definitely meets all my expectations when it comes to performance and handling. Overall, it's a great car. I did have a small issue with the tires, as I wore off the factory ones in only 30k miles with very little burnout action.
-
The GTO is a fantastic car for drivers who prioritize comfort and speed over interior quality. While the interior may not be the highest quality, it's a small trade-off for the overall driving experience.

This modern muscle machine is not your father's GTO. It's a 2+2 Corvette with an added stealth advantage. Some people criticize the so-called 'jellybean' styling, but I think it's a beautiful car inside and out, with power to spare. The clutch is a bit heavy for stop-and-go driving, but with 400 lb/ft of torque, you can simply ease out the clutch without touching the gas. It won't stall like a gutless high-revving VTEC. This car is pure adrenaline in a sophisticated touring package. In the words of Ferris Bueller, 'it is so choice.' If you have the means, I highly recommend you pick one up.

What a heartwarming story! It's amazing how a car can hold such a special place in our hearts. Your wife's surprise for your 50th birthday was truly thoughtful and I'm so glad to hear that the wait was worth it. The Cyclone Grey GTO sounds like a fantastic car that truly embodies the essence of muscle cars. It's great to hear that it performs magnificently and provides a true pleasure to own and drive. I can understand your concern about the future of the GTO, but let's hope that it continues to be produced for many years to come!

Hey there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my thoughts on the car I recently purchased. While I was initially excited about it, I have to admit that it hasn't quite lived up to my expectations. I've owned a Dodge SRT-4 in the past, which was much faster than my current six-speed GTO and cost over 10k less. However, I will say that the interior of the car is quite nice. I do wish that they had put more effort into the engine though. Thanks for listening!

If you are considering purchasing a vehicle, I would recommend looking into other options besides this one if you are a fan of Toyota/Nissan or Honda. Unfortunately, I experienced a few issues with my GTO after only 1300 miles. The first two problems were related to the LSD/Differential, which caused a whining noise and occasional knocking sound when shifting. The third issue was with the clutch sticking. It seems that the LSD/Diff problem has been present since the Camaro/Firebird days and now affects the GTO as well. It is disappointing to have these problems so early on, especially considering that this issue has been around in GM for over 10 years. It is my personal opinion that GM has a poor quality control program. As a result, I have decided to explore other options and will not be purchasing an American car again.
