The Audi A6 is an executive car made by the German company Audi since 1994. Now in its fifth generation, the successor to the Audi 100 is manufactured in Neckarsulm, Germany, and is available in saloon and estate configurations, the latter marketed by Audi as the Avant. Audi's internal numbering treats the A6 as a continuation of the Audi 100 lineage, with the initial A6 designated as a member of the C4-series, followed by the C5, C6, C7, and the C8. The related Audi A7 is essentially a Sportback (liftback) version of the C7-series and C8-series A6 but is marketed under its own separate identity and model designation.

All generations of the A6 have offered either front-wheel-drive or Torsen-based four-wheel-drive, marketed by Audi as their quattro system. The A6 has also been used as the basis for the company's Allroad models since 1999.

Both petrol and diesel versions of the A6 are offered. The wide range of engines available have power outputs ranging from 150 to 333 PS (110 to 245 kW). These are inline four-cylinder turbocharged engines and more powerful 3-litre units in a V6 configuration with a mechanical compressor.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-11-03
  • VIN: WAUEH54B81N
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I HAVE A 2001 AUDI A6 QUATTRO 2.8L WITH P1411 AND P1423 DTC CODES. I AM HEARING IT IS A VACUUM HOSE OR COMBI VALUE PROBLEMS FROM WHAT I AM READING, COMMON TO THIS MODEL, BUT I HAVE HAD SEVERAL MECHANICS LOOK AT IT AND NOT WANT TO TACKLE IT. IN A RECENT FORUM I WAS TOLD MANY OF THE ITEMS I HAVE LISTED WERE RECALL ITEMS-INCLUDING VACUUM HOSES. YES, MANY WERE, THERE WAS EVEN A LAW SUIT WITH AUDI, THAT AUDI DENIED MY CLAIM AND PAID SEVERAL ON. I APPEALED AND THEY DID NOT RESPOND AND DID NOT DEFINE WHY THEY REFUSED TO COVER IT. AUDI STILL HAS YET TO COVER THE VEHICLE IN THE PROFESSIONAL MANNER I EXPECTED. MY LIFE BURDENS ARE ENOUGH, I DO NOT NEED A CAR MANUFACTURER OR DEALER TO YANK ME AROUND, THE VEHICLE NOW HAS 205,000 MILES, BECAUSE I PAID OUTRAGEOUS CAR REPAIRS ON IT. I FEEL AUDI IS A GOOD CAR, BUT FIXING THINGS ON IT THAT SHOULD BE COVERED UNDER RECALLS AND SERVICE WARRANTIES IS NOT HAPPENING. DO I REALLY HAVE TO SUE TO GET RESULTS, THIS IS RIDICULOUS! I HAVE EXPERIENCED CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, FAILED EMISSIONS TESTING, HEADLIGHT PROBLEMS, ISSUES WITH WATER IN LENSES AND MIRRORS, TURN SIGNAL ISSUES, I HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH MY FUEL LINE, REPLACED TIE RODS, AND ABS BRAKE LIGHT SIGNALS AFTER BRAKE REPAIR. I AM HOPING NHTSA CAN SHED SOME LIGHT AND ASSIST ME WITH RECTIFYING MY CAR SITUATION POSSIBLY. I HAVE BEEN DEALING WITH THESE ISSUES FOR MANY YEARS NOW AND I AM HOPEFUL TO RECEIVE SOME RELIEF. *TR

2014-08-23

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-08-01
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: TRANSMISSION WENT OUT AT 104,000 MILES. THIS SEEMS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM ON AUDI'S. THE CAR WAS A $55000 CAR! I ENDED UP SELLING IT FOR PARTS, AS THE COST OF A NEW TRANSMISSION WAS MORE THAN THE MARKET VALUE. I WILL NEVER BUY AUDI AGAIN. *TR

FUEL SYSTEM, OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-04-10
  • VIN: WAUEH54B21N
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, OTHER
  • Summary: THERE IS NOT ACCIDENT INVOLVED YET. THERE IS A GAS SMELL ON LEFT REAR SIDE, OVER THE WHEEL ARCH ON MY AUDI A6 2001. I SEARCHED NHTSA FOR AUDI RECALL CAMPAIGN. THERE IS A RECALL CAMPAIGN# 11V267000 HOWEVER, WHEN I CONTACT AUDI-USA AT THE NUMBER PROVIDED BY THIS CAMPAIGN, THAT IS 1-800-822-2834, AFTER ASKING MY THE VEHICLE MILEAGE, AUDI-USA JUST SAID MY CAR IS NOT COVERED BY THE THIS RECALL. APPARENTLY, THE DEFECT EXACTLY MATCHES WHAT THIS RECALL CAMPAIGN# 11V267000 DESCRIBES. WHY AUDI-USA REFUSES TO COVER MY CAR? I AM WONDERING WHETHER IT'S BECAUSE MY CAR IS AT HIGH MILEAGE. THEY MAY TRY TO SAVE COST, BUT THIS IS AN APPARENT SAFETY HAZARD CAUSED BY MANUFACTURING DEFECT. AND THE DEFECT SHOULD BE FIXED REGARDLESS OF VEHICLE MILEAGE. REGULATORS NEED TO OVERSIGHT THINGS LIKE THIS. THE CAR MANUFACTURERS CANNOT JUST WAIT TO FIX DEFECTS UNTIL REAL ACCIDENT HAPPENS. *TR

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2011-09-19
  • VIN: WAULH64B01N
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: OUR 2001 AUDI AND MANY OTHER CARS LIKE IT HAVE PLASTIC HEADLIGHTS THAT PERFORM WELL FOR SEVERAL YEARS. THEN IN ANY SUNNY LOCATION LIKE THE US SOUTHWEST THEY BEGIN TO FOG UP AND BECOME PROGRESSIVELY MORE OPAQUE. THIS RESULTS IS MORE LIGHT SCATTER USING THE HEADLAMPS AT NIGHT: THE HEADLAMPS NO LONGER FOCUS A NARROW BEAM OF LIGHT ON THE ROADWAY AHEAD. DUE TO FOGGED, OPAQUE HEAD LAMP LIGHT SCATTER VISIBILITY IS REDUCED PUTTING ESPECIALLY PEDESTRIANS AND BICYCLES AT RISK WHILE DRIVING AT NIGHT. ALSO, ONCOMING TRAFFIC EXPERIENCES GREATER NIGHTTIME GLARE FROM FOGGED HEADLAMPS INCREASING ACCIDENT RISK. OFTEN, REPLACEMENT COSTS FOR NEW PLASTIC HEADLAMPS ARE PROHIBITIVE - AT TIMES MORE THAN THE COST OF A USED CAR. MANY US DRIVERS THUS DRIVE WITH FOGGED UP, OPAQUE HEADLAMPS. PREVIOUSLY GLASS HEADLAMPS DELIVERED MANY DECADES OF RELIABLE SERVICE WITHOUT EVER FOGGING UP AS DO THE WINDOWS OF ANY OLDER CAR. I BELIEVE THE NHTSA SHOULD INVESTIGATE AND CONSIDER ISSUING A SAFETY RECALL. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 89,000.

Negative 2001 Audi A6 car reviews

  1. Mauricio Gutmann 2024-10-26

I bought my car from a lovely elderly lady with 150000 miles on the clock. She had only needed to fix the brakes and fluids, which was great. Although it's a fantastic car to drive, I've had to spend 7k on repairs in the six months I've owned it. Unfortunately, 5k of that came within a week and a half of each other. It's not reliable enough for someone who depends heavily on their car, which is a shame. It's turned out to be quite a money pit for me. It's a shame that the German engineering buzz I heard when I first bought the car didn't live up to my expectations.

I am confident in stating that this car has not met the expectations of its owner. Despite the attractive appearance and enjoyable driving experience, the car has required significant repairs including engine gaskets and seals, a frozen turbo, and an airbag controller, all of which cost over $1,000. Additionally, there have been repairs needed for tie rods, control arms, miscellaneous suspension parts, window guides, and differential seals (all 3), as well as O2 sensors, which cost less than $1,000. It is clear that the car was not built to a high standard of quality.

Great performance and comfort! Having quattro is a bonus in New England weather. However, I have experienced some transmission and electronic problems ever since I drove it off the lot. I have the 4.2 LOADED, and the car was $52K. I expected so much more for that kind of money and a German automobile. I will never get one again or recommend it to anyone. But, thank God it's a lease!

In 2005, I bought this car for my wife and we absolutely loved it. We took great care of it, storing it safely in our garage and being meticulous when washing it. We even took it on a memorable drive down to Vegas. However, we started experiencing some electrical problems which was disappointing. Despite my initial belief that German cars were the best, it seems that this one fell short. The spotlights required frequent fixing and the dash display led pin lighting began to fail. Additionally, other engine lights came on. When I inquired about the cost of repairing the dash at the Audi dealer in Kelowna, I was quoted almost $2000. I did what I could to fix the issues and ultimately sold the car to a young lady, although I felt guilty doing so. While I don't think I would purchase another Audi or VW product again, I do appreciate the memories we made with this car.

  5. Keagan Lind 2024-08-04

The vehicle was purchased used and driven for 5 months, during which over $2,000 was spent on maintenance bills. Despite attempting to trade in the vehicle, even the Audi dealer offered only $4K for the trade-in. It is advised not to purchase this vehicle, particularly this engine model, unless one is financially capable of handling the repair bills. It is important to exercise caution as a buyer.

When we were searching for a new car to replace our 1993 Camry, we considered five different brands: Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Mercedes Benz, and VW. In our search, we found that the Audi A6 had the best interior by far. On the other hand, we were disappointed with the MB, as it seemed to prioritize status and prestige over quality. The VW was a close second, but we were concerned about unresolved reliability issues. However, the body of the VW is similar to the Audi. We only had one issue within the first 30 days, which was a HID xenon headlamp that was replaced under the manufacturer's warranty. Overall, we are very happy with our wonderful car...

I purchased this car used from the Audi dealership with only 7000 miles on it. The Audi assured warranty provides me with peace of mind. Overall, the ride is great - super responsive, smooth, and fast. However, with the standard 16

You bought this car in '04 as a CPO'd car for your wife and it sounds like it's been a fun ride! The 2.7T engine is definitely a blast to drive and it's great to hear that the ride is comfortable. It's understandable that repairs can be expensive, especially since the warranties have run out. Hopefully, the recent trans work will be the last major repair for a long time. It's impressive that you've only put 36,000 more miles on it in 6 years since buying it with only 33,000 miles. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

Coming to the end of a 3-year lease, this was my first Audi. I chose it over the Mercedes E400 with all-wheel drive because it met or exceeded that car feature for feature, had much better acceleration, and had the design/feel of a sports car vs. a 'sedan'. Every button is where it should be. I actually like the simplified navigation system (taking route a turn at a time) as opposed to other 'digital map' implementations. I never expected extra conveniences like fold-down rear seats to expand trunk space. It's pure fun to drive alone or chauffeur others.

  5. Odell Ankunding 2024-08-03

I purchased this Audi A6 quattro with a 2.8 V6 engine after doing a lot of research on the car. I decided to stay away from the 2.7T due to the numerous problems reported with it. While the 2.8 V6 could use a bit more power, it builds speed effortlessly from around 40-50 MPH if you're a little patient. The ride quality is fantastic, although it can be a bit stiff for city driving. However, the car's solid grip on the road more than makes up for it. The car is built like a tank, and you can feel it at high speeds. The car becomes more and more stable as the speed increases, which is a huge difference from cars like the Toyota Camry and Highlander. I absolutely love the interior and exterior looks, as well as the quality of the materials used.
