2007 Audi A6 problems

audi logo

The Audi A6 is an executive car made by the German company Audi since 1994. Now in its fifth generation, the successor to the Audi 100 is manufactured in Neckarsulm, Germany, and is available in saloon and estate configurations, the latter marketed by Audi as the Avant. Audi's internal numbering treats the A6 as a continuation of the Audi 100 lineage, with the initial A6 designated as a member of the C4-series, followed by the C5, C6, C7, and the C8. The related Audi A7 is essentially a Sportback (liftback) version of the C7-series and C8-series A6 but is marketed under its own separate identity and model designation.

All generations of the A6 have offered either front-wheel-drive or Torsen-based four-wheel-drive, marketed by Audi as their quattro system. The A6 has also been used as the basis for the company's Allroad models since 1999.

Both petrol and diesel versions of the A6 are offered. The wide range of engines available have power outputs ranging from 150 to 333 PS (110 to 245 kW). These are inline four-cylinder turbocharged engines and more powerful 3-litre units in a V6 configuration with a mechanical compressor.

Common 2007 Audi A6 problems

The Audi A6 is a luxury sports sedan known for its quality infotainment and excellent performance. However, some model years have experienced common problems that potential buyers should be aware of.

One common issue with the 2007 A6 3.2 quattro is carbon buildup, which can be addressed by using top-tier premium gasoline, high-quality oil, and occasionally doing an "Italian tune-up" (WOT to redline) to help prevent the issue.

Electrical problems are another concern, with the digital display on the instrument cluster potentially failing.

The A6 is also known for using a lot of oil. If the oil gets low, it can have detrimental effects on the engine. Regularly checking the oil levels and topping up if necessary is crucial to maintaining the engine's health.

Gearbox problems, specifically software issues in automatic, CVT, or multitronic gearboxes, can cause hesitant or clunky gear changing. These issues can be resolved by re-programming the software at an Audi dealer, but it is the owner's responsibility if the car is not under warranty.

Turbo problems, such as blue smoke from the exhaust or a whistling noise from the top of the engine, may indicate that the turbo is failing and needs to be replaced.

Excessive vibration from the engine when revving it in neutral is usually caused by a problem with the dual mass flywheel, which is a very expensive repair. Professional inspection and potentially purchasing a quality second-hand flywheel are recommended.

Water leaking into the passenger footwell is often caused by blocked drainage holes below the windscreen or in the plenum chamber. Regularly checking and cleaning these areas can prevent water leaks.

In summary, potential buyers of a used Audi A6, particularly the 2007 A6 3.2 quattro, should be aware of these common problems and consider preventative measures, such as using high-quality fuel and oil, and regularly checking the engine for potential issues.

Why does my Audi A6 use so much oil?

Inside the engine of an Audi, there are small valves that help it work properly. These valves have seals that keep everything tight and in place. But if one of those seals gets damaged or worn out, it can cause the engine to use up more oil than it should. And that's not good for the car or its owner!

Negative 2007 Audi A6 car reviews

  1. Christop Hahn 2024-09-24

When I received my car, the brakes were very loud. The salesman assured me that it was just a temporary issue and would go away, but unfortunately, it has only gotten worse. The service department's response was that the brakes squeak. However, my other four vehicles do not have squeaky brakes. The worst problem, though, is the delayed acceleration at slow speeds. I am concerned about the safety of my family members driving this car. Unfortunately, the service reps say that this is just the way it is. I have owned two Lexuses and two BMWs, and any problems I had were taken care of. Audi's indifference to these acknowledged problems is beyond belief.

  2. Joan Homenick 2024-08-04

Despite my disappointment with the steering and electrical problems that my car has presented since purchase, I have found the AWD feature to be very helpful with handling and the interior to be very nice. However, I have experienced issues with the car drifting left and right, warning lights that will not go off, a malfunctioning MMI, and a stereo that does not work. Additionally, the undercarriage plastic protection ripped off with rainwater and plastic parts wear off too quickly. Although Audi USA claims that the vehicle is operating to specs, I have spent hundreds of dollars on several alignments and have just gotten used to the way it behaves. While I hope that Audi will improve their product in the future, I have decided that I will not be a repeat buyer due to these issues. I have also experienced issues with the front bumper coming off when parking.

Positive 2007 Audi A6 car reviews

  1. Hermann Trantow 2025-01-03

I spent months agonizing over which car to choose: Audi, BMW, Lexus, or Acura. But now, I am definitely very happy with my choice. The V8 engine is quick off the line and even more appreciated when passing on the freeway. The S line handling and paddle shifter add a fun touch, but are not mandatory. The new addition of the review camera is especially important in the city, where bumpers are not made for love taps. The interior comfort is very similar to the A8, which is a great thing. Overall, the car is awesome. The navigation system is easier to use than BMW's, and it gets decent mpg for a V8. The only downside is that the brakes could be more responsive. Apparently, they didn't make too many V8 A6s, so they are usually only ordered, which means you end up paying more for it (just 1k under MSRP). However, it is definitely worth it.

  2. Milo Braun 2024-11-27

What a fantastic car! It handles like a dream and has exceptional grip on the road. The design, both inside and out, is truly stunning and sets it apart from its competitors. The front seats are incredibly comfortable and the ride is smooth. I've driven 16,000 miles in less than a year and it has been incredibly reliable, only needing regular maintenance. The AWD is also fantastic, handling beautifully in the snow without slipping or sliding. Audi has really outdone themselves with this one!

  3. Laverne Smith 2024-10-24

This car is really awesome! It drives like a dream and the luxury amenities are truly luxurious. The navigation system is fantastic and I love the voice command and Bluetooth technology that allows me to call my friends without getting a ticket. It's beautiful both on the inside and outside. I'm having so much fun figuring out how to use the console to its fullest potential!

  4. Adolf Rippin 2024-10-04

I researched all German and Japanese sedans in the $40,000 to $60,000 range and Audi was one of the last I drove. As someone who has been driving BMWs since the late 70s, owning the 3 and 5 series, I was curious about Audi's A6 reliability, which has received better reviews in recent years. I must say, I was pleasantly surprised by how nimble, powerful and fun to drive it is, not to mention its stylish design. As a female driver, the color of the car is important to me, and I absolutely love the amaretto interior. The Bose sound system is also fantastic and really cranks up the volume. Overall, I had a great experience with the Audi A6 and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a new car.

  5. Alden Senger 2024-10-04

The 4.2 V-8 engine is a bit of a gas guzzler as expected, but the performance is fantastic. It would be great if there was an option to add Bluetooth to it, though. Also, it's worth noting that this model only has a CD changer in the rear.
