The Chevrolet S-10 is a compact pickup truck produced by Chevrolet. It was the first domestically-built compact pickup of the big three American automakers. When it was first introduced as a "quarter-ton pickup" in 1981 for the 1982 model year, the GMC version was known as the S-15 and later renamed the GMC Sonoma. A high-performance version of the latter was released in 1991, called "Syclone." The pickup was also sold by Isuzu as the Hombre from 1996 through 2000, but only in North America. There was also an SUV version, the Chevrolet S-10 Blazer/GMC S-15 Jimmy. An electric version was leased as a fleet vehicle in 1997 and 1998. These models are sometimes internally referred to as the S/T series to denote two and four wheel drive models respectively (similar to the full size Chevrolet C/K trucks) despite all versions being badged with 'S' nomenclature.

In North America, the S-series was replaced by the Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, and Isuzu i-Series in 2004.

The S-Series ended production in Brazil in 2012, being replaced by the Chevrolet Colorado, but still with the name S-10.

Common 1991 Gmc S15 problems

Common Problems with the GMC S15 1991

  • Ball Joint Wear: The ball joints on some GMC S15s have been reported to wear out prematurely. This can lead to safety concerns, as the ball joints are a crucial part of the suspension system. It is recommended to check the ball joints periodically, especially if the vehicle is used for intense driving.
  • Fuel Pump Access: Some owners have found it necessary to remove the bed of the vehicle to access the fuel pump. This can be time-consuming and inconvenient. A removable access panel would make maintenance and repairs easier.
  • Checking for Trouble Codes: Some GMC S15 owners have had difficulty locating the 12-pin link terminal to check for trouble codes. This can make diagnosing issues more challenging. It is important to locate the terminal and understand how to decode the flashes that follow, as this information can be crucial in identifying and resolving problems with the vehicle.
  • Electrical Issues: After swapping out the radio in a 2003 GMC S-10, some owners have reported a loss of dash lights, including instrument gauges and heater controls. This can be caused by improper wiring during the installation process. It is recommended to thoroughly check the wiring and fuses to ensure proper connections and functionality.
  • Driver's Side Window Dilemma: Some GMC S15 owners have experienced issues with the driver's side window, such as difficulty rolling it up or down. This can be caused by various factors, including worn-out window regulators or mechanical issues within the window mechanism.
  • Transmission Issues: Some GMC S15 owners have reported problems with the speed sensor and the ECU, which can affect the vehicle's speed and overall performance. It is recommended to check all connections from the speed sensor to the ECU and inspect the transmission for any broken drive gears.
  • Safety Concerns: The NHTSA website provides a platform for reporting safety problems with vehicles, including the GMC S15. If you experience any safety issues with your GMC S15, it is important to report them to the NHTSA to help keep roads safe.
