2004 Audi A6 problems
The Audi A6 is an executive car made by the German company Audi since 1994. Now in its fifth generation, the successor to the Audi 100 is manufactured in Neckarsulm, Germany, and is available in saloon and estate configurations, the latter marketed by Audi as the Avant. Audi's internal numbering treats the A6 as a continuation of the Audi 100 lineage, with the initial A6 designated as a member of the C4-series, followed by the C5, C6, C7, and the C8. The related Audi A7 is essentially a Sportback (liftback) version of the C7-series and C8-series A6 but is marketed under its own separate identity and model designation.
All generations of the A6 have offered either front-wheel-drive or Torsen-based four-wheel-drive, marketed by Audi as their quattro system. The A6 has also been used as the basis for the company's Allroad models since 1999.
Both petrol and diesel versions of the A6 are offered. The wide range of engines available have power outputs ranging from 150 to 333 PS (110 to 245 kW). These are inline four-cylinder turbocharged engines and more powerful 3-litre units in a V6 configuration with a mechanical compressor.

Common 2004 Audi A6 problems
The Audi A6 C5, produced from 1997 to 2004, is known for its reliable engines, but like any vehicle, it has its share of issues, particularly when it comes to high mileage and aging. Here are some common problems reported by owners of this car:
- Chain drive resource: The chain drive resource of the Audi A6 C5 is generally reliable, lasting at least 180,000 kilometers. However, some owners have reported that the chain had to be changed even after 120,000 kilometers. After 200,000 kilometers, the chain tensioner may begin to fail, causing a knocking noise at idle that subsides with an increase in speed over 1500 rpm.
- Timing belt drive: The timing belt drive should be replaced every 60,000 kilometers, along with the pump. Failure to do so can result in significant problems.
- Electric coolant temperature sensor: This sensor can cause many problems, including a buggy door that doesn't close completely and windows that don't return down. Silicone grease may help if the cause is banal souring electronics, but a complete replacement of the dashboard is often necessary.
- ABS ECU and airbags malfunction: The ABS ECU and airbags can malfunction due to oxidation of the contacts and tired soldering of the unit. The unfortunate location of the comfort unit can lead to loss of control of windows and light in the cabin, requiring replacement of the locks.
- Door switches: The door switches built into the locks are known to be buggy or fail completely, requiring replacement.
- Generator and starter: After 300,000 to 400,000 kilometers, the generator and starter may require repair or replacement.
- Heater radiator: After 350,000 to 450,000 kilometers, the heater radiator may lose its effectiveness due to clogging.
- Turbocharged engines: The 1.8 and 2.7 liter versions of the Audi A6 C5, which are equipped with turbochargers, require extra attention. The plastic base of the turbine over pressure valve can burst after about 150,000 kilometers, causing significant problems.
- Air-con: The air-con is surprisingly susceptible to faults, with roughly a quarter of cars needing attention. Check that it blows icy-cold air and that there are no damp or musty smells.
- Diesel engines: The diesel engines can get through oil between services, so it's vital to check them regularly. Inspect the oil level and see when the car was last serviced.
- Gremlins in the electrical system: Gremlins in the electrical system strike in almost 40% of cars. The engine's ECU can also cause problems, so look for warning lights on the dashboard or a sudden drop in performance.
- Rear wheels rubbing on wheelarches: Some owners have reported that the rear wheels rub on wheelarches when the car is loaded, especially in S line cars.
- Expensive tyres: Tyres can be expensive to replace, too.
It's important to note that the Audi A6 has a good reputation for reliability, and many of these issues can be avoided with proper maintenance and care. However, potential buyers should be aware of these common problems and consider them when purchasing a used Audi A6 C5.

"SINCE WE ARE SHOWING THE 20L8 COMPLETED IN JULY OF 2008 AND THE ORIGINAL 20L8 REPAIR IS SPECIFIC TO DRIVER'S SIDE ROLLOVER NIPPLE VALVES, ACCORDING TO THE DEALERSHIP THIS CURRENT REPAIR IS UNRELATED TO THE RECALL." "CURRENTLY PER THE NHTSA WEBSITE, THE 20L8 IS NOT SHOWING AS AN OPEN RECALL, SO I WOULD BE UNABLE TO SPEAK TO HOW THEY WOULD REACT TO INFORMATION REGARDING A CLOSED RECALL." 'WE HAVE NO EVIDENCE SUPPORTING AN INCORRECT REPAIR BEING PERFORMED IN JULY OF 2008, SO AT THIS TIME WE WOULD BE UNABLE TO PROVIDE ASSISTANCE TOWARDS THIS REPAIR." CURRENT EMISSIONS CHECK ENGINE LIGHT (NOV 18, 2018) IS DIAGNOSED BY THE AUDI DEALER AS A GAS TANK LEAK. ALSO, THERE IS A STRONG ODOR COMING FROM GAS TANK. SEATS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2009-12-05
- VIN: WAULT64B84N
- Components: SEATS
- Summary: I FILED A COMPLAINT ABOUT MY 2004 AUDI A6 IN DEC OF 2009. I REPORTED THAT MY BACK PASSENGER SEAT HAD ALMOST CAUGHT FIRE, AND WAS BURNT. BOTH MY SEAT CUSHION AND UPPER BACK CUSHION WERE BURNED. AT THE TIME I HAD NOT CONTACTED AUDI, YET FILED A COMPLAINT, BECAUSE I FELT AND STILL DO THAT THIS WAS A MAJOR SAFETY HAZARD. SINCE MY LAST COMPLAINT I DID CONTACT BOTH MY DEALERSHIP (ROTH AUDI IN ERIE, PA) AND AUDI HEADQUARTERS AKA: AUDI CUSTOMER RELATIONS. THEY WERE VERY WILLING TO WORK WITH ME, SEEMED EXTREMELY CONCERNED AND SAID NOT TO WORRY BECAUSE I STILL HAD A WARRANTY LEFT ON MY CAR. WELL AFTER THE CAR RETURNED HOME FROM THE DEALERSHIP THEY ONLY FIXED HALF OF THE PROBLEM! THE DEALERSHIP SAID AUDI TOLD THEM TO REPLACE THE BOTTOM CUSHION ONLY. THE DEALERSHIP PAINTED OVER THE TOP CUSHION AND I FOUND THIS OUT AFTER I BEGAN WIPING MY SEAT, BECAUSE I THOUGHT I HAD SMUDGE MARKS ON IT... NOPE PAINT WAS COMING OFF AND COULD SEE THE BURNED SEAT UNDERNEATH THE PAINT. I CALLED AUDI BACK, AND THEY HAD ME TAKE IT BACK TO THE DEALER TO BE ASSESSED AGAIN. AFTER 6 DAYS OR SO THE PERSON I HAD BEEN DEALING WITH FROM AUDI CUSTOMER RELATIONS CALLED TO SAY WE CANT REPLACE THAT PART OF THE SEAT BECAUSE THEY FOUND NO DEFECT IN THE HEATING ELEMENT. SO IN ESSENCE, THEY ONLY DID HALF OF THEIR JOB SINCE THE SEAT BURNED FROM ONE INCIDENT! I HAVE SINCE CONTACTED THE FTC, AND THE ATTORNEY GENERAL RE: THIS ISSUE. I WILL NOT STOP THERE IF I DO NOT GET THIS RESOLVED. THE ENTIRE SEAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN COVERED UNDER THE WARRANTY. CONSIDERING VW RECALLED MANY OF THEIR CARS FOR THE SAME REASON, AND AUDI IS OWNED BY VW I WOULD THINK THEY WOULD BE A BIT MORE CONCERNED ABOUT THEIR CUSTOMERS. I HAVE VIEWED MANY FORUMS, AND FOUND THERE WERE A LOT OF COMPLAINTS SIMILAR TO MINE WITH REGARDS TO THE HEATED SEATING EITHER CATCHING ON FIRE OF BURNING THE SEAT. I'D LIKE TO KNOW IF NHTSA IS HONESTLY LOOKING INTO THIS? THANK YOU. *TR

FOR THE PAST SEVERAL MONTHS IT HAS HAD A SEVERE SHUDDERING IN THE STEERING COLUMN AS I ACCELERATE MID-THROTTLE, AS WHEN I ACCELERATE ONTO AN ON-RAMP. I HAVE TRIED TO HAVE MY LOCAL AUDI DEALER ADDRESS THIS (IT IS A CERTIFIED VEHICLE) BUT THEY SO FAR HAVE NOT COME ACROSS WITH RESOLUTION. I HAVE ALSO CONTACTED THE AUDI OF AMERICA CUSTOMER SUPPORT FOLKS SEVERAL TIMES AND THEY SAY THAT THERE IS NOT A PROBLEM LIKE THIS WITH THIS CAR, BUT THEY ALSO SAY THAT IF I USE A SPECIFIC MAKE OF MICHELIN TIRE, IT MIGHT ALLEVIATE THE PROBLEM! I'M CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF THIS CAR-IT DOESN'T ALWAYS DO THIS, BUT WHEN IT DOES THE STEERING WHEEL "SHUDDERS", LIKE IT VIBRATES/WOBBLES AND THE WHOLE CAR VIBRATES. IT STARTED AT ABOUT 40,000 MILES AND SEEMS TO HAVE WORSENED OVER TIME. IS THERE A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS VEHICLE? PLEASE HELP IF YOU CAN! *TR

I bought it and haven't touched another car ever since. It would be like cheating. All I can say is, test drive this car - you will love it too!

I recently traded in my 2003 3.0 A6 for a brand new 2004 A6 2.7 s-line and I couldn't be happier. While I really enjoyed my 3.0, the 2.7's acceleration and handling are simply outstanding. The spoiler is the perfect finishing touch to the rear end, and the 9 spoke wheels are beautifully crafted. The quattro is also amazing, and the braking is top-notch. As a car enthusiast, I highly recommend the s-line.

I had many friends who owned Audis in the past, circa mid-80s. They loved the performance but hated the maintenance problems. I waited for some fifteen years, but now that I have the car, I love it. So far, I have driven 16,000 miles and counting, and I have had no appreciable problems. The regular service has been incredibly good, punctual, and reliable. Actually, they have even been kind. I would strongly recommend this car, specifically the A6 and A6 allroad.

A great driving 300HP car. My major complaint is city mileage but it is an 8. It's a comfortable and great handling automobile with lots of power.

This is definitely the best car I have ever driven in tough winter conditions here in Minnesota. I have always used SUVs before, but I don't think I'll ever go back to one again. I also really appreciate the XFM radio that comes standard in this vehicle. The heated car seats activate very quickly.

Hi there! I wanted to share that my Audi A6 gets around 14.5 miles to the gallon. I had a bit of a frustrating experience with the dealership (Legend in Amityville) as they didn't honor the loaner agreement and made ownership a bit of a challenge. I would recommend avoiding this dealership if possible. Also, just a heads up that the car can be a bit of a gas guzzler. Thanks for listening!

Love it! It's just that I wish I didn't have to put so much money into it. When it rains, it pours. My eyes were bigger than my stomach. It could be an awesome car. I love working on it (a lot), even though everything is a pain to get to and nothing is simple. But, I do love my car, I guess because I am still paying on it.
