1996 Buick Skylark problems
The Buick Skylark is a passenger car formerly produced by Buick. The model was made in six production runs, during 46 years, over which the car's design varied dramatically due to changing technology, tastes, and new standards implemented over the years. It was named for the species of bird called skylark.
The Skylark name first appeared on a limited production luxury convertible using the Buick Roadmaster's chassis for two years, then was reintroduced in 1961 as a higher luxury content alternative to the entry-level Buick Special on which the Skylark was based upon. It was then positioned as Buick's luxury performance model when the Buick GSX was offered. As GM began downsizing during the late 1970s, the Skylark became the entry-level model when the Special nameplate was used as a trim package designation, then in the 1980s was offered as a front-wheel-drive vehicle where it was both a coupe and sedan for three different generations.
1953–1954
Created to mark Buick's 50th anniversary, the Roadmaster Skylark joined the Oldsmobile 98 Fiesta and Cadillac Series 62 Eldorado as top-of-the-line, limited-production specialty convertibles introduced in 1953 by General Motors to promote its design leadership. Of the three, the Skylark's run of 1,690 units proved the most successful, and an amazing sales feat considering the car's 1953 list price of slightly in excess of US$5,000 ($56,940 in 2023 dollars ) was over 50% more than the well-equipped US$3,200 Roadmaster convertible on which it was based ($36,442 in 2023 dollars ). It was comparable in price to the 1953 Packard Caribbean with a similar retail price.
Production ran for two years. Based on the model 76R two-door Roadmaster convertible, the 1953 Skylark (designated model 76X) had identical dimensions (except height), almost identical appearance, shared its drive train, and had all its standard equipment, plus its few remaining options, including power windows, power brakes, full carpeting, and a "Selectronic" AM radio. Only air conditioning was not offered, unnecessary in either convertible.
Importantly, the new Skylark featured Buick's new 322 in3 (5.3 L) Fireball V8 in place of the automaker's longstanding straight 8, and a 12-volt electrical system, both division firsts. It debuted full-cutout wheel openings, a styling cue that spread to the main 1954 Buick line. Accenting its lowered, notched beltline was a new "Sweepspear" running almost the entire length of the vehicle, a styling cue that was to appear in various forms on many Buick models over the years.
The 1953 Skylark was handmade in many respects. Only stampings for the hood, trunk lid, and a portion of the convertible tub were shared with the Roadmaster and Super convertibles. All Skylark tubs were finished with various amounts of lead filler. The inner doors were made by cutting the 2-door Roadmaster's in two then welding the pieces back together at an angle to produce the rakish door dip. An overall more streamlined look was reinforced by cutting the windshield almost 3 inches (7.6 cm) shorter and lowering the side windows and convertible top frame proportionately. Seat frames and steering column were then dropped to provide proper headroom and driving position. Front legroom was 44.7 inches (114 cm). Authentic wire wheels were produced by Kelsey-Hayes, chromed everywhere except the plated and painted "Skylark" center emblem.
The Skylark returned in 1954 with radically restyled styling unique to the Buick line, which included wheel cutouts that could be painted in a contrasting color to the body's. The trunk was sloped into a semi-barrel, and tail lights moved to large chromed fins projecting atop the rear fenders.
Re-designated model 100, the car was based on the all-new shorter Century/Special series 40 chassis and not the larger series 60 Roadmaster/Super chassis, also all-new for 1954. Once again, all Skylarks were built as 2-door convertibles and carried the same luxury equipment as before, but front leg room dropped 2.4 inches (6.1 cm). While smaller and lighter, the Skylark received a performance boost by retaining the big Buicks' powertrain, an evolutionary improvement of 1953's with the highest output in the division's lineup.
The 1954 Skylark once again had unique sheet metal stampings for its elongated wheel cutouts and new semi-barrel trunk, though fabrication was done without hand labor. The hood ornament was unique, adopted the following year across the Buick product line.
Sales proved to be poor, reflecting the Skylark's continued high price of US$4,843 ($54,947 in 2023 dollars ) coupled with a perceived step-down from the Roadmaster/Super series using the Century's chassis, slumping far enough to cause the model's cancellation at the end of the 1954 model year, with only 836 being manufactured.

Common 1996 Buick Skylark problems
The 1996 Buick Skylark is known for several common problems that owners have reported over the years. These issues range from electrical and computer-related problems to maintenance and engine concerns.
- Faulty Ignition Switch: Another common problem with the 1996 Buick Skylark is a faulty ignition switch. This issue can cause the power to the gauges to malfunction, and the ignition switches used to burn up in some cars. GM had a recall on some cars to install a starter relay to take the load off the ignition switch.
- Corrosion on Main Fuse Holder Bracket: Some owners have reported finding a fair amount of corrosion on and around the POS bolt/sta-kon connector to the main fuse holder bracket. Although cleaning the corrosion did not solve the problem, it is still recommended to check and clean all grounds to ensure proper electrical connections.
- Instrument Cluster Failure: The instrument cluster in the 1996 Buick Skylark is prone to failure, which can make it challenging to find replacement parts at junkyards. This issue can affect the car's ability to display essential information such as speed, fuel level, and engine temperature.
- Engine Maintenance and Repairs: The 1996 Buick Skylark requires regular maintenance and repairs, especially for older models. Some basic repairs can be challenging due to the engine's location, making it difficult to access.
- Rough Running: Despite a tune-up, some owners have reported that their 1996 Buick Skylark runs rough, which can be a disappointment. This issue may require further investigation to diagnose and resolve the problem.
In summary, the 1996 Buick Skylark has several common problems that owners have reported, including computer and security system issues, faulty ignition switches, corrosion on the main fuse holder bracket, instrument cluster failure, engine maintenance and repairs, and rough running. These issues can be frustrating for owners, but many can be resolved with proper maintenance and repairs.

- Summary: THE AIRBAG EXPLODED WHILE I WAS DRIVING THE CAR AND THEN CAUSED THE HORN TO CONTINUOUSLY GO OFF. NOT FIVE MINUTES INTO MY DRIVE IT WENT OFF WHILE I WAS ACCELERATING FROM BEING STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT. I WAS PULLED OVER ON A SIDE STREET WHEN THE HORN STARTED GOING OFF. THE AIR BAG BRUISED AND BURNED MY LEFT ARM, HOWEVER MEDICAL ATTENTION WAS NOT REQUIRED. I HAD A WATER LEAK SOMEWHERE THAT CAUSED WATER TO BUILD UP PRIMARILY ON MY DRIVER SIDE FLOOR BOARD, HOWEVER EVENTUALLY THE BACK FLOOR BOARDS BECAME WET AS WELL. IT IS BELIEVED THAT THE WATER CAUSED AN ELECTRICAL MALFUNCTION AND SET OFF THE AIR BAG. IT SEEMS STANDING WATER IS AN ISSUE FOR THESE CARS AND CAN CAUSE AN ISSUE WITH A CONTROL BOX LOCATED UNDER THE SEAT, WHICH IS AN AWFUL COMBINATION. THIS ACCIDENT COULD HAVE BEEN WAY WORSE THAN IT WAS, AND IT FORCED ME TO BUY A NEW CARE EARLIER THAN I WAS FINANCIALLY PREPARED TO DO. *TR

- Consequence: THE INTERIOR LAMPS COMING ON UNEXPECTEDLY COULD STARTLE A DRIVER CAUSING A MOMENTARY LOSS OF CONTROL INCREASING THE RISK OF A VEHICLE ACCIDENT.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL RUN A DIAGNOSTIC TEST ON THE LAMP CONTROL MODULE AND, IF NECESSARY, REPLACE IT.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: STEERING: STEERING WHEEL/HANDLE BAR
- Summary: THE STEERING COLUMN LOWER PINCH BOLT WAS NOT PROPERLY TIGHTENED DURING ASSEMBLY.
- Consequence: AN UNDERTORQUED PINCH BOLT CAN RATTLE AND CAUSE LOOSENESS IN THE STEERING SYSTEM. IF THE PINCH BOLT BACKED OUT OF THE JOINT COMPLETELY, ROTATION OF THE STEERING SHAFT AGAINST THE CONNECTOR COULD CAUSE INCREASING LOOSENESS IN THE STEERING SYSTEM AND RESULT IN LOSS OF STEERING AND AN ACCIDENT.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE STEERING COLUMN PINCH BOLT FOR CORRECT TORQUE AND, IF NECESSARY, TIGHTEN THE BOLT TO THE SPECIFIED TORQUE.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL
- Summary: DURING DEPLOYMENT OF THE PASSENGER AIR BAG, THE AIR BAG FABRIC CAN SNAG ON A REINFORCEMENT INSIDE THE INSTRUMENT PANEL, CAUSING THE EXPANDING AIR BAG TO LIFT THE INSTRUMENT PANEL PAD AND THEN DEPLOY UNDER THE INSTRUMENT PANEL INSTEAD OF THROUGH THE DOOR IN THE INSTRUMENT PANEL.
- Consequence: IN A CRASH, THE FRONT SEAT PASSENGER COULD RECEIVE MORE SEVERE INJURIES IF HE OR SHE CONTACTS A BROKEN REINFORCEMENT OR IF THE SNAGGING AFFECTS THE DEPLOYMENT OF THE AIR BAG.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE INSTRUMENT PANEL PADS AND, IF NECESSARY, INSTALL A PLASTIC EDGE PROTECTOR TO THE INSTRUMENT PANEL PAD REINFORCEMENT. ON CERTAIN EARLY-PRODUCTION VEHICLES, THE INSTRUMENT PANEL PAD WILL BE REPLACED.

I'm not your typical Buick owner, I bought my 1st Skylark when I was 24, I am now 31. I can't say enough about how I love my Buick. It is safe, reliable and I enjoy driving it. Yes, I too have repaired & replaced my fair share of things, but with over 107k miles on it, that's to be expected. The worst repair I had to make was replacing the transmission at 90k miles. This is my 2nd Skylark, I lost my 1st in '97 in a nasty accident (rear-ended at a stoplight by a 12-ton truck). Since I walked away from that, I was determined to find myself another one.

On a long trip, you can go 50-55 mph and get mid-30 mpg with this car. The 6 cylinder is torquey, but the overdrive keeps the mileage in the mid to upper 20s. It's a solid car that can keep you functional even if someone rear ends you. While it's not a land yacht, it can carry four people in reasonable comfort (although the back seat is a bit tight). It's easy to insure and travel in, although you may want to bring a pillow or small poodle for neck rest support. The car could use better lumbar support, but it always runs! The speedometer is HUGE (as it should be). Overall, I'm very happy with the 6-banger 'lark.

I'm so glad to hear that you've had your car since 2004 and it's still running great! It's impressive that it's only required minimal repairs despite having 119000 miles on it in 2018, which is a testament to its quality. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

Congratulations on owning your first car! It sounds like it served you well and got you where you needed to go. Although there were some issues towards the end, it's great to hear that it held out for as long as you needed it to. The car provided a smooth ride, good braking system, and powerful acceleration. Unfortunately, towards the end, there were some troubles with the coolant system, which required some repairs. Despite this, you were able to fix the issues and keep the car running until you were in a position to buy another car. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my car that I bought from a friend back in 2005. It was a great first car and I trusted my friend to sell me a reliable vehicle. Although it handled well at first, I've had some issues with it over the years. Unfortunately, it doesn't start up as easily as it used to and I've had to deal with some electrical problems. I've taken it to a few mechanics to try and fix the issues, but it's been a bit of a challenge. Despite these problems, I've put a lot of love and care into this car and it's served me well. It only has 70,000 miles on it, so it's not like it's been driven into the ground. Overall, it's been a bit of a challenge, but I'm grateful for the time I've had with it.

Although some reviewers may have had a different experience, I must say that my personal experience with this car was not satisfactory. Despite purchasing it used from a trusted source, I found that American cars tend to have issues after reaching 100,000 miles, and unfortunately, this car was no exception. While it was visually appealing and enjoyable to drive, it required frequent maintenance and was not reliable. It was surprising to see how quickly the car deteriorated within just six months, but it is important to note that it is a '96 model in 2008, so it may have simply reached the end of its lifespan.

I purchased this car from a friend's father in 2002 when it had 109K miles on it. It has been a reliable vehicle, with no engine or transmission issues, despite now having 157K miles on it. The only problem we have encountered is a persistent coolant leak, which has required the replacement of the radiator once and the hoses three times. Unfortunately, we still seem to be experiencing the same issue. We spend $15 a week on coolant, which can be frustrating. However, overall, I am very fond of this car. It has great gas mileage, although I would recommend a 4-door model if you have a family. Also, I suggest going for the V-6 engine. Best of luck!

It's great to hear that you've been driving your 1995 Buick Skylark GS for three years now! I remember purchasing mine when gas was three dollars a gallon, and it's been an excellent choice as an inexpensive commuter car instead of driving my diesel pickup all the time. I'm really pleased with this car! This is actually the second Buick I've owned, and I find them to be well-built, economical, and a great alternative to imports. I get as good of gas mileage as many imports, with a much more powerful and nicer car to boot. The exterior of the car looks sporty (for a Buick!) and I love the pretty red with dark gray exterior trim and black and gray leather/fabric interior.

I have had very few mechanical problems with this vehicle. It is a basic and reliable car that rides well on the highway and is not too bad in the city. Although, it does have one major flaw - the interior has been falling apart since I purchased it! The carpet was worn within a year, and most plastic parts are either cracked or have fallen off. However, if you are looking for reliable transportation and don't mind the interior, the Skylark is the perfect car for you!
