1990 Audi 100 problems
The Audi 100 and Audi 200 (and sometimes called Audi 5000 in North America) are primarily mid-size/executive cars manufactured and marketed by the Audi division of the Volkswagen Group. The car was made from 1968 to 1997 across four generations (C1–C4), with a two-door model available in the first and second generation (C1-C2), and a five-door model available in the last three generations (C2–C4).
In 1982, the third generation Audi 100 achieved a remarkably low (for its time) drag coefficient of 0.30, featuring flush greenhouse sides with unique sliding window mountings.
The C2 and C3 models of the Audi 100 were marketed in North America as the Audi 5000 from 1978 to 1988, and in South Africa as the Audi 500.
In 1993, the models were mildly restyled, and renamed the Audi A6 series in conjunction with a general new Audi naming scheme, until they were replaced by a new generation of A6, internally code-named C5, in 1997. The Audi 100's traditional competitors include the Mercedes Benz E-Class and BMW 5-Series.

Common 1990 Audi 100 problems
Based on the information from the sources provided, here are the common problems with the Audi 100:
- Starting Difficulties: Owners of 1990-1991 model year Audi 100 vehicles may face starting difficulties due to air leaks and fuel injection system issues. Prompt diagnosis and repair are essential to ensure proper vehicle operation.
- Oil Leaks: External oil leaks from the valley pan gasket and head gasket are common in Audi 100s from 1992-1994. Repairing these leaks can be costly, with the average cost for head gasket replacement ranging from £1,515 to £1,930 in the UK.
- Transmission Problems: Transmission issues, such as slipping gears, delayed shifts, and harsh shifting, are reported in Audi 100 models with automatic transmissions. In severe cases, transmission failure may necessitate expensive replacements.
- Engine Overheating: Some Audi 100s, particularly from the 1992-1994 model years, may experience engine overheating issues related to the water pump and timing belt. Regular inspection of these components is crucial to prevent engine overheating and costly repairs.
- Suspension and Steering: Worn bushings around the subframe, suspension, and steering components can lead to clunking noises while driving. It is recommended to have the constant velocity (CV) boots and CV joints inspected regularly to prevent further damage.
- Rust Protection: Some models of the Audi 100, like the C3 -88 (facelift 88B), may have inadequate rust protection, which can be a concern in regions prone to rust like Sweden. Additionally, issues with the electrics and door handles breaking have been reported in this model.
These common problems highlight the importance of regular maintenance and prompt attention to issues to ensure the Audi 100 runs smoothly and to avoid costly repairs.

Great warranty! This car can go up to 200,000 miles and still get a new transmission. It performs really well in the snow and is easy to service with local garage specialists in Audi.

After 19 years, the car still looks and drives great! What really makes a difference is that the suspension was lowered by about 2 inches, giving it a very tight ride (although it can be a bit harsh at times); but wow, can it corner! It gets me about 20 mpg on average mixed around town driving, and up to 25 mpg on solid highway driving.
