2005 Toyota Prius problems
The Toyota Prius (/ˈpriːəs/ PREE-əss) (Japanese: トヨタ・プリウス, Hepburn: Toyota Puriusu) is a compact/small family liftback (supermini/subcompact sedan until 2003) produced by Toyota. The Prius has a hybrid drivetrain, combined with an internal combustion engine and an electric motor. Initially offered as a four-door sedan, it has been produced only as a five-door liftback since 2003.
The Prius was developed by Toyota to be the "car for the 21st century"; it was the first mass-produced hybrid vehicle, first going on sale in Japan in 1997 at all four Toyota Japan dealership chains, and subsequently introduced worldwide in 2000.
In 2011, Toyota expanded the Prius family to include the Prius v, an MPV, and the Prius c, a subcompact hatchback. The production version of the Prius plug-in hybrid was released in 2012. The second generation of the plug-in variant, the Prius Prime, was released in the U.S. in November 2016. The Prius family totaled global cumulative sales of 6.1 million units in January 2017, representing 61% of the 10 million hybrids sold worldwide by Toyota since 1997. Toyota sells the Prius in over 90 markets, with Japan and the United States being its largest markets.

Common 2005 Toyota Prius problems
The Toyota Prius, a hybrid vehicle first introduced in 2001, has been a popular choice for those looking for a fuel-efficient vehicle. However, the 2005 model of the Toyota Prius has had its fair share of problems, as reported by owners.
One common issue with the 2005 Toyota Prius is the malfunctioning headlights. Many owners have reported that their car's headlights would go out while driving, which can be a severe safety hazard when night driving.
Another issue that has been reported by Prius owners is problems with the interior accessories. One of the most common issues is the faulty dashboard display. The dashboard lights may go out for no reason, leaving drivers unable to see their fuel gauge and speedometer. In some cases, the Prius may not lock, and the engine may refuse to shut down.
Owners of 2004-2009 Prius models have also reported acceleration issues. The sedan may randomly accelerate, which can be dangerous if it happens in heavy traffic. Toyota has issued a statement that the possible cause of random acceleration is related to stuck gas pedals and misplaced floor mats.
These issues, along with excessive oil consumption, have been reported by owners of the 2005 Toyota Prius. While these problems can be frustrating, it's worth noting that the Prius is still considered a reliable vehicle, with many models from 2000-2004 and 2013-2020 being considered the best options for those looking for a used Toyota Prius.
In summary, the 2005 Toyota Prius has had some common problems, including malfunctioning headlights, interior accessory issues, and acceleration problems. STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-01
- VIN: JTDKB20U957
- Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS
- Summary: I had lost functionality for some buttons on the steering wheel that didn't directly impact safety. On replacing the clockspring mechanism inside the whweel I decided to inspect the old unit. Four of the lines in the flex cable are impacted by corrosion, three have already failed. The fourth line is one of the airbag's electrical lines. I'm filing an issue report because the airbag would be next impacted by this failure and I believe there's a fair chance the corroded line could fail during the vehicle's attempt to fire the airbag on the wheel.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-02-22
- VIN: JTDKB20U053
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: We purchased our 2005 Prius in 2014, and after 7 years of learning to drive with the bizarre behavior of this Gen 3 Prius, and reporting it to the dealer (who said that's just how they are designed), I just read dozens of reports on NHTSA, all from Gen3 Prius owners, all reporting identical issues with the antilock braking and traction control systems. It is as if Toyota intentionally designed them to operate exactly the opposite of how they should. With traction control, anytime the front drive wheels loose traction - gravel, railroad tracks, even as simple as painted road stripes or damp surfaces - traction control kicks in; however, on this car, traction control immediately cuts all motive power to the drive wheels, leaving the driver vulnerable to getting hit from behind; it cuts in and out until the car decides it has enough traction to proceed. It's dangerous and idiotic. The anti-lock brakes do much the same; if one encounters a situation requiring emergency braking, when the anti-lock system initiates, the brakes simply cut out, and the car jumps ahead, until they grab, then loose again immediately, with multiple lurches, and sometimes just no brakes at all available. It is dangerous and, from the Toyota dealer where we get it serviced regularly, a constant complaint from owners. And, Toyota does nothing. There needs to be a class action addressing both of these dangerous propensities. It's an awful design. Just awful.

- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: 2005 TOYOTA PRIUS BRAKE ACTUATOR/ FLUID ACCUMULATOR. TOYOTA HAS ONLY ISSUED AN EXTENDED WARRANTY ON THIS ISSUE, WHICH EXPIRED IN DEC 2017. COMPLETE CARELESSNESS ON THEIR PART! THIS ISSUE SEEMS TO BE PREVALENT IN MANY OF THEIR VEHICLES. IT SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN AN EXTENDED WARRANTY BUT A FULL-ON RECALL. THIS FAULTY PART IS VERY DANGEROUS AS IT CAN LEAD TO A TOTAL LOSS OF BRAKING ON THE VEHICLE. I BOUGHT THIS CAR USED JUST A MONTH AGO AND AM NOW DEALING WITH AN EXTREMELY COSTLY REPAIR BILL TO CORRECT THIS PROBLEM. THE PREVIOUS OWNER APPARENTLY DID NOT BRING THE CAR IN FOR REPAIR DURING THE SO CALLED 'WARRANTY' TIME FRAME AND NOW I AM DEALING WITH IT. TOYOTA HAS SAID IF THE COMPONENT DIDN'T FAIL DURING THE WARRANTY TIMEFRAME, THEN THEY WERE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPAIR COST. I FEEL TOYOTA WAS TRYING TO AVOID THE REPAIR COSTS AND NOW WANT ME, THE CONSUMER, TO COVER IT OUT OF POCKET. NEEDS TO BE AN IMMEDIATE RECALL ON THIS!
EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-12-18
- VIN: JTDKB20U153
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: THE HEADLIGHTS ON MY 2005 PRIUS CONTINUE TO GO OUT. WE REPLACE THE BULBS BUT EVEN WITH BRAND NEW BULBS WILL BE DRIVING AND AFTER ABOUT 60 SECONDS OF HEADLIGHTS BEING ON THE LIGHT WILL TURN OFF. SOMETIMES ONLY ONE TURNS OFF BUT OFTEN BOLT TURN OFF AND WE'RE IN COMPLETE DARKNESS DRIVING ON THE ROAD. WE HAVE TO TOGGLE THE HEADLIGHT CONTROL OFF AND ON SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE THEY TURN ON AGAIN, WHICH LEAVES US DRIVING IN COMPLETE DARKNESS AND IT'S A BIG SAFETY HAZARD! AGAIN, BRAND NEW BULBS HAVE THIS ISSUE, TOO. GETTING THE WHOLE HEADLIGHT AND COMPUTER BEHIND IT REPLACED IS VERY EXPENSIVE. THIS IS A BIG SAFETY ISSUE AND IT HAS BEEN HAPPENING AND GETTING WORSE FOR OVER A YEAR.
2005 Toyota Prius recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 6 recalls for different components of the 2005 Toyota Prius.
- Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: Toyota is recalling certain model year 2004-2009 Prius vehicles manufactured August 5, 2003, through March 30, 2009. The affected vehicles have a steering intermediate extension shaft assembly built with metal splines that complete the connection from the steering wheel to the steering gear. These splines may have been manufactured with an insufficient hardness.
- Consequence: Over time, the splines may wear and eventually fail resulting in a loss of steering ability, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
- Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the extension shaft and replace it if it is one with insufficient hardness, free of charge. The recall began during December 2012. Owners may contact their Toyota dealer or the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331.
- Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: Toyota is recalling certain model year 2004-2009 Prius vehicles manufactured August 6, 2003, through March 30, 2009 and FCHV-adv vehicles manufactured December 12, 2008, through September 13, 2011. During manufacturing, a scratch may have occurred inside of the electrically driven water pump at the coil wire. The coil wire may corrode at the scratched portion.
- Consequence: The corroded coil wire may break and the water pump could stop. The corroded coil wire could cause a short circuit between coil wires and a possible open fuse, creating a stall-like condition of the hybrid system while the vehicle is being driven. This may increase the risk of a vehicle crash.
- Remedy: Toyota will notify its owners, and dealers will replace the electric water pump, free of charge. The recall began on January 17, 2013. Owners may contact their Toyota dealer or the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331.
- Manufacturer: SOUTHEAST TOYOTA DISTRIBUTORS, LLC

THESE VEHICLES WERE SOLD WITHOUT THE REQUISITE LOAD CARRYING CAPACITY MODIFICATION LABELS.
- Consequence: A DRIVER MAY OVERLOAD A VEHICLE WHICH MAY INCREASE THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL MAIL TO CONSUMERS THE CORRECTED LABEL OR THE CUSTOMER WILL HAVE THE OPTION FOR DEALERS TO INSTALL THE LABEL FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON MAY 27, 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT SOUTHEAST TOYOTA AT 1-800-301-6859.
- Manufacturer: TOYOTA MOTOR NORTH AMERICA, INC.
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL:ACCELERATOR PEDAL
- Summary: TOYOTA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2004-2010 PASSENGER VEHICLES. THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL CAN GET STUCK IN THE WIDE OPEN POSITION DUE TO ITS BEING TRAPPED BY AN UNSECURED OR INCOMPATIBLE DRIVER'S FLOOR MAT.
- Consequence: A STUCK OPEN ACCELERATOR PEDAL MAY RESULT IN VERY HIGH VEHICLE SPEEDS AND MAKE IT DIFFICULT TO STOP THE VEHICLE, WHICH COULD CAUSE A CRASH, SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.
- Remedy: TOYOTA FILED AN AMENDED DEFECT REPORT ON NOVEMBER 25, 2009, STATING THAT DEALERS WILL MODIFY THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND, ON CERTAIN VEHICLES, ALTER THE SHAPE OF THE FLOOR SURFACE UNDER THE PEDAL. THESE CHANGES ADDRESS THE RISK OF PEDAL ENTRAPMENT DUE TO INTERFERENCE WITH THE FLOOR MAT. REDESIGNED ACCELERATOR PEDALS WILL BECOME AVAILABLE BEGINNING IN APRIL 2010 AND DEALERS WILL REPLACE ANY MODIFIED PEDAL WITH THE NEW PEDAL IF DESIRED. ALSO, DEALERS WILL REPLACE ANY GENUINE TOYOTA OR LEXUS ALL-WEATHER FLOOR MATS WITH REDESIGNED ALL-WEATHER MATS, OR REPURCHASE THE PREVIOUS MATS FROM OWNERS WHO DO NOT WANT THE NEW ONES. ADDITIONALLY, SOFTWARE MODIFICATIONS WILL BE INSTALLED ON CAMRY, AVALON AND LEXUS ES 350, IS 350 AND IS 250 MODELS THAT WILL ENSURE THAT THE BRAKE OVERRIDES THE ACCELERATOR IN THE EVENT BOTH BRAKE AND ACCELERATOR PEDALS ARE APPLIED. TOYOTA WILL BEGIN MAILING LETTERS TO OWNERS ON DECEMBER 31, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331, LEXUS AT 1-800-255-3987.

- Summary: THE INTERMEDIATE SHAFT AND SLIDING YOKE IN THE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING SYSTEM CAN CRACK WHEN LARGE FORCES ARE APPLIED AND THE CONNECTION MAY SEPARATE OR THE SLEEVE MAY FRACTURE.
- Consequence: THIS COULD RESULT IN A LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE.
- Remedy: TOYOTA WILL REPLACE THE STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT AND INSPECT THE SLIDING YOKE AND REPLACE IT IF NECESSARY. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JUNE 9, 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331.
- Manufacturer: TOYOTA MOTOR NORTH AMERICA, INC.
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: ON CERTAIN VEHICLES, DUE TO IMPROPER ASSEMBLY OF THE AIR BAG INFLATOR, WHICH IS USED IN THE SIDE AIR BAG, THE CURTAIN SHIELD AIR BAG, AND THE KNEE AIR BAG ASSEMBLY, SOME INFLATORS WERE PRODUCED WITH AN INSUFFICIENT AMOUNT OF THE HEATING AGENTS NECESSARY FOR PROPER AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT. IN THIS CONDITION, THE EXPANSION FORCE OF THE GAS MAY BE INSUFFICIENT TO PROPERLY INFLATE THE AIR BAG WHEN THE SRS SYSTEM IS ACTIVATED DURING A CRASH.
- Consequence: THIS MAY INCREASE THE RISK OF INJURY TO THE OCCUPANT IN THE INVOLVED SEATING POSITION IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE SPECIFIC SRS AIR BAG. THE RECALL BEGAN ON APRIL 6, 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-888-270-9371, SCION AT 1-866-548-1851, OR LEXUS AT 1-800-255-3987.
Negative 2005 Toyota Prius car reviews
Positive 2005 Toyota Prius car reviews
-
We've had our 2005 Prius for over 3 years now and it still performs like it's brand new. We loved it so much that we bought another one - a 2008 package 5 in October. Even though the 2005 model has 50,000 miles, they both ride the same. Living in Canada, we were worried about how it would handle in the winter, but it's been an absolute charm. We've had no problems with the battery, and it starts up even at -40 degrees. Overall, we think it's an excellent vehicle.
-
This sounds like an amazing car! It's so reliable and gets awesome mileage. I usually get around 42, even with all my short city trips, and on the highway it's even better at 50. Plus, it's really comfortable to drive and has just the right amount of power. And the best part? I've never had a single mechanical problem with it!
-
We love our Prius! We can get 51 mpg on a whole tank just by paying attention to when we lay off the gas pedal. Even when we're not as careful, we still get 46 mpg, which is still better than the gas-guzzling SUV we used to drive. Plus, we're taking a stand (as we all should) to stop our dependence on oil.
-
It's a great vehicle! I've had the pleasure of showing it to many people and they've all been highly impressed by its features. I always make sure to show off the impressive mileage, which ranges from 45 to 57 MPG. However, there are a few minor issues that I've noticed. For example, the monitor can be difficult to see when the sun is shining due to glare. It would be great if they could find a way to protect it from the sun. Additionally, some features of the monitor, such as phone numbers and map features, are disabled for safety reasons. While I understand the reasoning behind this, it would be nice if passengers could use these features when the vehicle is in motion. Lastly, the headlights could be stronger as they can be quite blinding during night driving. Overall, I still think it's a fantastic vehicle!

Driving this vehicle is so much fun! It's my wife's car, but I try to drive it whenever I get a chance. I absolutely love the real-time fuel consumption gauge and the GPS is perfect for the city. The steering is great and the car accelerates surprisingly fast. There's plenty of room for my large road bike in the back and, as a 6' 2

The engine can be quite noisy during acceleration and unfortunately, a rattling sound has developed in the dash. Despite multiple attempts by the service department, the issue has not been resolved yet. It's worth noting that the Prius has a smaller fuel tank (only 11 gallons), which limits its driving range, although the gas mileage is still impressive. On the other hand, the Honda Civic Hybrid has a standard tank (13 gallons) and a much longer range. If I had the chance to make the decision again, I would either go for the Civic or opt for a non-hybrid vehicle.

The Prius is a great car! However, before making a purchase, it's important to test-sit in it. The slanted roof can make it difficult for anyone over 5'10

In the first 2 months, I have experienced some minor setbacks, but I am confident in the overall performance of the vehicle. The mileage has been 40-43, which is still impressive, despite being slightly lower than the advertised amount. While the acceleration may not be the strongest, it is a necessary trade-off for achieving 43 mpg. Additionally, while the Prius may not handle like a sports car, it still performs well in everyday driving situations.
