The Toyota Prius (/ˈpriːəs/ PREE-əss) (Japanese: トヨタ・プリウス, Hepburn: Toyota Puriusu) is a compact/small family liftback (supermini/subcompact sedan until 2003) produced by Toyota. The Prius has a hybrid drivetrain, combined with an internal combustion engine and an electric motor. Initially offered as a four-door sedan, it has been produced only as a five-door liftback since 2003.

The Prius was developed by Toyota to be the "car for the 21st century"; it was the first mass-produced hybrid vehicle, first going on sale in Japan in 1997 at all four Toyota Japan dealership chains, and subsequently introduced worldwide in 2000.

In 2011, Toyota expanded the Prius family to include the Prius v, an MPV, and the Prius c, a subcompact hatchback. The production version of the Prius plug-in hybrid was released in 2012. The second generation of the plug-in variant, the Prius Prime, was released in the U.S. in November 2016. The Prius family totaled global cumulative sales of 6.1 million units in January 2017, representing 61% of the 10 million hybrids sold worldwide by Toyota since 1997. Toyota sells the Prius in over 90 markets, with Japan and the United States being its largest markets.

Common 2022 Toyota Prius problems

The Toyota Prius is known for its reliability, but like any vehicle, it has some common issues that owners have reported. Here are some of the most frequent problems with the 2022 Toyota Prius, based on owner complaints:

  • Excessive Oil Consumption: Another common problem with the 2022 Prius is excessive oil consumption, which can be an annoyance and costly to rectify.
  • Faulty Multi-Function Display: Models from 2001 to 2016 have been affected by this issue, where the display becomes unresponsive or stops working altogether.
  • Engine Issues: Some owners have reported a wide array of engine-related problems, such as stalling, hesitation, blown head gasket, overheating, and engine failure.
  • Faulty Headlights: Many Prius owners, particularly with the 2008 model, have complained about their car’s headlights, where the headlights would just go out while driving, making it a severe safety hazard when night driving.
  • Brake Booster Pump Failure: Some Prius models built between 26 April and 3 June 2019 may have a faulty brake booster pump, which can lead to increased braking effort in order to slow down.
  • Inverter Failure: Some cars made between 18 January and 10 December 2016 may have a loose inverter in the hybrid system, which will need to be replaced to solve this issue.
  • Engine Wiring Harness Chafing: A part of the wiring harness could chafe on the engine, wearing through the insulation material and potentially leading to a fire. It is recommended to speak to a Toyota dealer to find out if your car is one of those affected by this and was built between 23 March 2016 and 14 May 2018.
  • Instrument Cluster Short Circuit: The combination meter or instrument cluster of a small number of examples manufactured between 10 - 31 July 2019 could short circuit and go blank. It is recommended to find out if your car is one of those affected by this because it'll need to have the cluster replaced to prevent further issues.

It is worth noting that despite these issues, the Toyota Prius has a reliability rating of 4.0 out of 5.0 and a 10th ranking out of 24 midsize cars, according to RepairPal. However, it is still recommended to check for these common problems when buying a used 2022 Toyota Prius to ensure that you are getting a reliable and safe vehicle.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-01
  • Number Of Injuries: 3
  • VIN: JTDKAMFU5N3
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Extremely loud, ear-piercing noise from speakers when the vehicle is started. Lasts about two to three seconds. My ears have been damaged by it. My young boys cried while in their car seats and said that their ears hurt. Noise occurs randomly. Dealer states that they can't do anything since it is not reproducible. I offered to record the noise when I enter the car. I would have to have my cell phone ready to do this every time I start the car. Dealer said they will not accept recordings or videos. It has to occur in the presence of their technician. I filed a complaint with Toyota corporate. They said it's up to the dealer. No help there. Internet forums are filled with these random high-pitched noises on late model Toyotas: [XXX] module and/or amplifier are the specified culprits in TSBs. However, since my particular year and model is not listed, they will not investigate or do anything. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

AIR BAGS,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-20
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: JTDKAMFU0N3
  • Components: AIR BAGS,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: My husband and I rented a car from Avis on June 19, 2023. THe car they we selected was not available so they picked a prius out of the lot and gave it to us. On the morning of June 20, I was slowly turning into the driveway at [XXX] , my foot on the brake the whole time to slow to a stop so I could park parallel to my realtor's car. My realtor, [XXX] , witnessed the slow speed, as did many of the neighbors, as it was a quiet residential street. I continued to depress the brake but instead of stopping, our rental car, a Toyota Prius, suddenly lurched forward through the garage door! At no time did I lift my foot from the brake from the time I slowed the vehicle to enter the driveway. My husband can attest to this. In fact, he told me he was about to remove his seat belt, as he expected we would come to a stop. THe car ended up crashing through the back wall of the garage causing extensive damage. The air bags did not deploy either. I cannot explain why the vehicle would suddenly accelerate while my foot remained on the brake. I am now being sued by the homeowners insurance company. Fortunately no one was hurt nor killed. I filed a claim initially with avis two days later and asked for a report or dcm download of the brake system. Their ins. co. is named Sedgwick and I have followed up with their reps and no one can tell me if the brakes were checked and what was found. I have never been in a crash in my life and this is extremely upsetting. No one is getting back to me. Can you please help? • Summary: Problem is with what Toyota calls the Combination meter of the Instrument Cluster. Specifically, (going from left to right), "Headlight high beam indicator," "Shift position indicators," "Cruise control indicator," and Passenger Air Bag status indicators are washed out or unreadable. The result is that important safety information is denied to the driver. Toyota of Nashua has inspected my concerns and agrees my observations are accurate but further states this situation is the same for all 2022 Priuses and no safety recall or service bulletin has been issued by Toyota.

Negative 2022 Toyota Prius car reviews

  1. Donald Sanford 2024-09-19

I recently purchased this car after being very happy with my 2008 Prius. Although they didn't have a similar model in stock, the salesman convinced me that this car would be just as great. While it is my first time with AWD, there are a few things that have been disappointing. Firstly, the fact that the car doesn't come with a spare tire has been a bit of a nightmare. I've had two flats and dealing with the warranty has been a headache. Secondly, the storage space is not as good as my older Prius, despite the car being bigger. There are also no cute secret compartments anymore. Thirdly, the buttons on the steering wheel are super sensitive, especially the ones for phone calls. If you turn the wheel, something might turn on or off accidentally. Fourthly, you have to click the remote four times to get all four doors to open, and if you try to open the doors from the passenger side with your remote, they won't open. They will only open from the driver's side, unlike the 2008 model. Fifthly, there is no GPS unless you download the Toyota app, which I found to be a bit of a disaster. The GPS will only work if you plug your phone in, but then if someone else wants to play music from their phone, it won't work unless my phone is unplugged. Sixthly, the windshield got dented from something on the road and the dent turned into a long crack, probably from the heat of the summer. Although I found out that I have a warranty to cover this, I was disappointed to learn that it cannot be a crack of a certain length. Seventhly, the car is quite low to the ground and I didn't realize this until I parked and felt the curb scratching the bottom of the front bumper. Eighthly, the choice of colors is quite limited. I went with blue. Lastly, I initially wanted to return the car within a month, but decided to keep it for a few more months. However, less than 5 months later, I definitely wanted to return it as I had no use for AWD.Too late. 10) I really like how the car gives you a grade- A, B, C, D, or even an F to tell you how well you're driving. However, what I don't like is that every time I accelerate to pick up speed, it accelerates very slowly, almost as if it's gasping for air. But that's not a big deal- I'll just go slow.

Positive 2022 Toyota Prius car reviews

  1. Kenton Bechtelar 2025-01-04

I'm so glad you love your zippy car! It's great to hear that it accelerates well and has awesome safety features. Plus, all wheel drive is a fantastic feature!

  2. Jamaal Oberbrunner 2024-10-10

    It's such a great vehicle!

  3. Loy Wyman 2024-09-23

Before purchasing our 2022 Prius XLE, I read many reviews and didn't expect to be surprised by the driving experience. However, my husband and I are thoroughly enjoying the handling and everything else about this vehicle. The only drawback for us is that, like many small hybrids, there isn't a spare tire, just a tire repair kit. This made us feel uneasy, but our salesperson was incredibly helpful and provided us with a spare tire which we keep in the cargo area. We may sacrifice a little on gas mileage, but we feel much safer being on the road. We absolutely love this car!

  4. Nolan Russel 2024-08-17

We are so glad to hear that you are enjoying your Prius L ECO! It sounds like it has just the right amount of features for your needs, including a backup camera and lane change alert. And of course, the great mileage is a huge plus. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

  5. Wilfred Kunde 2024-08-10

I've owned two Prius LEs, my first in 2011 and my current one is a 2022 model. It's amazing how some things change in a decade, but the quality of a Toyota remains the same. While there can be some road noise at times, the gas mileage and reliability make it a great investment for those who want to save money. I use my Prius for my daily commute and running errands, and I'm always impressed by how little gas it uses. With a tank that holds only about 9 gallons, I can go a long way. So far, I've been getting an impressive 53 to 55 mpg combined highway and in-town driving.
