Alfa romeo Stelvio problems

alfa romeo logo

The Alfa Romeo Stelvio (Type 949) is a car produced by the Italian manufacturer Alfa Romeo since 2016. As a D-segment model it slots above the smaller Tonale model in the marque's SUV range. A large SUV, it was first revealed at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show, introduced by a 60" short film directed by Louis Sebastian Pane, and entered production at the Cassino Plant at the end of 2016. In 2018 it was Alfa Romeo's best-selling model, with roughly 43,000 sold that year.

The Stelvio uses FCA's Giorgio platform, shared with the D-segment Giulia saloon. The name Stelvio derives from the Stelvio Pass, Italy's highest mountain pass, noted for its 48 circuitous switchbacks.

Characteristics

The Stelvio uses the same Giorgio platform already used by the Giulia, but slightly modified and raised by 22 cm (8.7 in). The Stelvio also shares the same engines and most of the mechanics, including a carbon-fibre driveshaft. In addition, its track width has increased by 2.9 cm (1.1 in) in the rear and 5.4 cm (2.1 in) in the front. It has a boot capacity of 525 L (18.5 cu ft). The boot sill is aligned with the rear bumper and cargo does not need to be lifted over a lip when being removed. There are large vehicle blind spots behind the car's pillars. It has a 50/50 weight distribution and a drag coefficient of 0.32 (Cd). Euro NCAP classify it as a large off-road car.

In order to reduce the weight of the car, aluminium is used for body panels, as well as for mechanical parts such as the suspension, brakes, and engine. The suspension, called AlfaLink, implements double wishbones in the front, and an aluminium multi-link configuration in the rear. The springs are longer than those in the Giulia, but stiffer to account for the extra weight and ride height. The driver sits nearly 20 cm (7.9 in) higher from the road than in the Giulia. The suspension is tuned for improved handling and driving dynamics, which can compromise ride quality if optional larger-diameter wheels are fitted.

Rear-wheel drive as standard, the Stelvio can be optioned with an Alfa Romeo "Q4" all-wheel drive system, which can send up to 50% of power to the front in low-grip conditions. The Stelvio weighs 1,660 kg (3,660 lb) with all fluids, 145 kg (320 lb) less than an equivalent BMW X3 and 110 kg (243 lb) less than a four-cylinder Porsche Macan. The car's braking system is designed to be less-susceptible to brake fade, which can take time for unfamiliar drivers to get used to.

All models feature an 8.8-inch infotainment system with Apple Car Play and Android Auto as standard, while small tweaks have been made throughout the ranges.

Common Alfa romeo Stelvio problems

Based on complaints from owners of the Alfa Romeo Stelvio, common problems with this car include issues with the engine, electrical system, leaking coolant hoses, and adaptive cruise control.

  1. Engine Problems: Owners have reported issues with the engine, such as recurring spark plug problems leading to fuel rail and fuel mixture issues. This can result in white smoke from the tailpipes and the SUV not running properly.
  2. Electrical System: The electrical system in the Alfa Romeo Stelvio has been a concern for owners. Problems range from starting the car to issues with the sat-nav operation, electric seats, and rear tailgate operation. Electrical malfunctions can affect windshield wipers, lights, and even lead to potential fire hazards due to overheating.
  3. Leaking Coolant Hoses: Another common problem reported by owners is leaking coolant hoses. This issue can lead to coolant leaks, overheating, and potential engine damage if not addressed promptly.
  4. Adaptive Cruise Control: Owners have experienced problems with the adaptive cruise control system. Malfunctions in this system can affect the vehicle's driving dynamics and safety features, impacting the overall driving experience.

These issues highlight some of the challenges faced by Alfa Romeo Stelvio owners, emphasizing the importance of regular maintenance and thorough inspections to address these common problems effectively.

My vehicle is available to the NHTSA upon request. On each occasion, except one, I was fortunate to be in the right hand lane and was able to pull over onto the shoulder before any could hit me. On [XXX] , near Richards, there was no shoulder and I was stopped within the single lane of westbound traffic. I was fortunate that traffic was light at that time and that it was daylight. After the first two incidents in 2023, I took it to Northside Imports in Spring, Texas (XXX) They were unable to duplicate the problem or determine what was the cause. On [XXX], I took the car back to Northside Imports and they determined that it needed a new fuel pump, seal and control module. (I was informed on Friday, [XXX] that the parts have been received and can be installed on [XXX].) Between the time that the fault was identified and the time the parts were available the car has failed on the highway twice, once on [XXX] and once on [XXX] . The vehicle has not been inspected by anyone but Northside Imports in Spring, Texas. There were no warnings in advance of the shutdown. I was able to restart the vehicle after a short period of time after disconnecting the battery. Each time, it restarted in "limp" mode. • Summary: I was in the process of merging on the the express way when my vehicle threw a warning light, "service electronic throttle control" along with a "service engine" message and a check engine light. The vehicle went into a "limp" and had extremely poor acceleration, I was almost rear ended because the vehicle couldn't reach highways speeds fast enough. The vehicle has not yet been inspected my the manufacturer but I did some research on this issue and found it to be alarmingly common. There seems to be no clear answer to the reason for this and no sure repairs for the problem. This poses a safety risk to drivers as this problem seems to happen while accelerating. It can be dangerous if someone on the expressway is attempting to merge into 60mph traffic and hit "limp mode" at roughly 30. I believe an investigation need to be conducted regarding this followed by a recall of the affected part.

Latest negative Alfa romeo Stelvio car reviews

  1. Emilio Stiedemann 2025-03-27

    Vehicle year: 2018

I've been driving my Stelvio since June and it's been a fantastic experience. The engine, transmission, and steering are all top-notch. However, I do have to admit that the interior and technology could use some improvement. The seats have limited positions, which can make long drives uncomfortable. In comparison, my wife's F-Pace has a much more sophisticated cabin (although it's still not the best in class). The Stelvio's stereo upgrade (Harmon) is only average, which is a bit disappointing. I was initially told by my local dealer that an infotainment upgrade was imminent, but it doesn't look like that's happening anytime soon. Overall, if you're looking for a fun and unique driving experience, the Stelvio definitely delivers. However, if you prioritize high-end comfort, sophistication, and refinement, this might not be the best fit for you.

*********UPDATED REVIEW 10/9/22: Hi everyone, I wanted to share an update on my experience with the Alfa Romeo dealership in Glendale, CA. Initially, I had given them a one-star review, but I'm happy to say that I've updated it to two stars thanks to the amazing customer service I received. Despite facing a challenging situation with my car being disassembled in a body shop for several months due to a missing part, the service manager, Jerry Gordon, went above and beyond to find a solution. He was able to locate a suitable part in Florida and had it shipped to our body shop in California the following week. As of 10/8/22, our car is finally repaired and drivable again! I'm grateful for Jerry's outside-the-box thinking and dedication to finding a solution when no one else could. I only wish I had been put in touch with him earlier, as it would have saved us months of waiting. Thank you, Jerry, and the team at Alfa Romeo Glendale for your excellent customer service! In my opinion, if you purchase or lease an Alfa and nothing goes wrong with the car, you'll probably be very happy with it. However, if something does go wrong, you might be in for a very long wait with an unusable car due to persistent supply chain issues. Therefore, I would not recommend getting an Alfa as a daily driver, unless you also have a second/backup vehicle for your use. We were fortunate that Jerry Gordon was so resourceful, once I finally got to speak with him, or else we would still be out of a car right now. The car may look cool and drive well, but if you experience ANY problems with it, customer care will not help you!! We purchased a brand new $58,000+ Alfa Romeo Stelvio, and while it was parked, someone hit the headlight in the parking lot. We took it to the body shop. The tab on the old headlight was broken, so when they removed it, it could not be put back. The body shop placed the order for the new part in June 2022. The part was apparently backordered. We understand that there have been worldwide part shortages due to COVID, so we have been patiently waiting since then, and paying for Ubers completely out of pocket. To our dismay, the ETA for the part kept getting pushed back--eventually, until Sept 2022. But now, in September 2022, Alfa is saying that the part will be even more delayed--and the best they could tell us was a vague To make matters worse, when I called customer service and asked to speak to a higher-level manager, they hung up on me. It's really disappointing to have such a negative experience with Alfa Premium Care. In contrast, I've owned Lexus and Infiniti vehicles that I bought used with 100k+ miles and I was always treated like a valued customer whenever I went to the dealership. They provided me with loaners, coffee, and super kind and respectful customer service. This is exactly what you expect when you buy a luxury brand. I've never had any issues with parts, even during the pandemic, since the cars are so popular that there is always a good supply of everything available. Alfa Romeo is clearly a rare brand, but it's unfortunate that they don't treat their customers well. Once you've bought the car, it seems like you're on your own. I'm disappointed with my experience and I don't think I'll be buying another Alfa Romeo anytime soon. From now on, I'll stick with Lexus or Infiniti. #alfaromeosucks

I've owned a Porsche, a Benz, and a G35, but with a family, I decided to try the Alfa. I must say, the handling is amazing, and the design is gorgeous. It's spacious enough for me and the kids, and the gas mileage is decent. However, there are a few issues that I encountered. Firstly, it dings and rings every time you get close to another car or curb, and the front yells at you when it bottoms. Secondly, there's no touch screen, which is surprising for a car in 2019. Thirdly, there's no spare tire, and finding a replacement tire is a challenge. I had to pay $309 for a screw in the tire. The storage space for change, keys, etc. is also quite limited. Lastly, the hands-free feature can be quite annoying as it keeps switching back to inside the car even when you're not in it. Despite these issues, it's still a sexy car. However, I've learned that looks aren't everything, and the extra effort required to maintain it may not be worth it. UPDATE: Unfortunately, right before its second year, it fell apart. The battery died, water leaked into the passenger door, frying the electrical system and destroying the speaker. After two weeks in the shop, it died again with the same problem. I finally decided to get rid of it.

There seems to be a lot to discuss, from the dealership experience to the customer service provided by Alfa Romeo Corporate. Unfortunately, it seems that the cost is not worth it, and there have been issues with promises not being kept. It may not be worth driving far to any dealership. It's best to avoid purchasing in this situation.

My Stelvio experienced tire wear at 35k, lost quick pick up at 37k, and had interior plastic falling apart at 41k. However, my VW and BMW held together without any issues through 60k, and my VW is still running smoothly at 73k. Based on my experience, I would recommend considering other options before investing in a Stelvio.

I have a 2022 Stelvio Veloce and it has met or exceeded my expectations. I traded a 2020 Audi Q3. The Q3 was smaller by 7 inches as well as noticeably narrow. The Stelvio is much quicker and reacts with precision when the need be. Overall, I have to say that Alfa has done an amazing job building a quality automobile that is not only fun to drive but also exceeds expectations.

Today the car has 20,200 miles on it. As I mentioned before, CarPlay can be a bit fussy, but I've found that giving it a short wait before driving seems to do the trick. It can get a bit confused at times, especially when playing my music, but I've found a workaround that usually works. If it won't launch, I simply shut off the car, open the door for a few seconds, then close it and start the car again. My opinion is that it's still a bit of a fault, but overall I still love the car and would definitely buy another. Alfa USA has been very engaging with me, always reaching out to get my thoughts. Previously, at 12,145 miles, the Stelvio was running fine. I haven't had any major issues, just two minor ones since new. One was that the battery was junk, and the other was that the radar lens on the right lower front fell off, which seems to be a common issue. Both were replaced under warranty. The only items that seem a bit glitchy are Apple CarPlay, which doesn't always launch (could be me?), and the automatic high beam, which works but not as I'd expect. It often won't click to high even when it's really dark, so I'll have to get this looked at. The dealer, Valenti Alfa Romeo, has been great, and between them and Alfa, I feel like they are trying to keep me happy. I'd definitely buy the Stelvio again. I stand by my original comments, and I've read that some of the minor issues I mentioned were taken care of on the 2020 model. It remains a solid and fun car to drive. Small to mid-size SUVs all look the same, but I needed one, so I reluctantly searched and thankfully found the Stelvio. My must-haves were a unique, stylish look and excellent handling and performance. After spending a month reading reviews of various luxury car brands, including BMW, Audi, Porsche, Jag, and Volvo, I found that the Stelvio stood out in terms of both looks and driving experience. Despite some complaints about lack of luxury and quirky controls, I found that these issues were overstated. I ultimately test drove the 2019 Stelvio Ti Sport with almost all the options, including the hitch and full spare, which had an MSRP of $58.5k. I highly recommend the Ti Sport performance package, which includes the active suspension and limited slip rear differential. The Ti Sport beats the competition in the N mode, but switching to the D mode of driving puts the Performance Package in play and it’s an impressive change. It’s a hot rod race car! If you drive one with this option you'll have to have it! I have no complaints regarding performance of the engine, transmission, handling or brakes, they all respond to make the drive thrilling. You’ll want to drive this car hard so have to be careful to avoid tickets! The seats are comfortable and supportive, and the paddle shifters are perfect. The car's safety features, including active cruise, lane change, side & front warnings, and cross traffic all work well. The climate control and sound system are also great. While the automatic high beam feature seems a little quirky and the navigation is plain, it has enough features and does what it’s intended to do. The back up camera window is small but sufficient. CarPlay and Bluetooth can sometimes be quirky, but I usually stay in CarPlay mode which works well. While it's not a touch screen, the knob style device is easy to master and once you establish your settings, they'll rarely change. Voice commands may need a little time to sync to your voice, but they work well once they do.In my opinion, this car is a solid 4-star option when it comes to technology, especially when compared to other cars I've mentioned. However, it's a 5-star performer when it comes to handling and overall performance. Personally, I love driving this car and I often receive compliments on its stylish appearance.

If you're looking for an SUV that's both indulgent and fun to drive, the Stelvio is definitely worth considering. The sport trim's front two seats, complete with bolsters, are particularly impressive. While the GLC AMG43 and X3 M40i are great cars, they're also significantly more expensive than the Stelvio. With its precise steering, impressive acceleration, and responsive braking (although it may take some time to get used to the electronic system), the Stelvio is a steal, especially with the current offers available. The red interior is a standout feature compared to other options. In terms of driving and handling, the Stelvio outperforms the regular X3, GLC, and Macan. If you opt for the sport version, the ride may be a little stiff, and passengers in the back seat may find it bumpy on less-than-perfect roads. However, if you're looking for a sporty SUV rather than a luxury or utility-focused one, the Stelvio is an excellent choice. I'm finding more and more excuses to drive it, and it's been a while since driving has been this much fun!

Reviewers often criticize the Stelvio for its perceived lack of practicality and technology compared to other SUVs. However, the Stelvio is not just a basic driving appliance designed to transport you and your family from point A to point B. It is a practical sports car that offers the personality, handling, and fun-to-drive factor of sports cars and sports sedans, all in a more practical package. Personally, I was looking for a sports car with the practicality of an SUV, and the Stelvio was the perfect choice. Every time I drive it, it puts a smile on my face - something that cannot be said for many other SUVs.

The 2020 Alfa Stelvio is an absolute blast to drive! It's fast and confident in the turns. While the fuel economy could be better, I have to admit that my lead foot doesn't help. I recently traded in my Lexus GX 460 (which was a great car and served its purpose), but I wouldn't go back now.
