2011 Mini Cooper s countryman problems
The Mini Countryman, also called Mini Crossover in Japan, is a subcompact crossover SUV, the first vehicle of this type to be launched by BMW under the Mini marque. It was launched in 2010 and received a facelift in 2014. The second generation vehicle was released in 2017.

Common 2011 Mini Cooper s countryman problems
The 2011 Mini Cooper S Countryman has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. These issues include:
- Electrical System Failure: Another owner reported that the electrical system of their 2011 Mini Cooper S Countryman blew out, causing significant inconvenience and potential safety hazards.
- Squealing Noise from Engine Compartment: A third owner reported a terrible squealing noise coming from the engine compartment, indicating a possible mechanical issue that requires professional attention.
- Fuel Pump Failure: Several owners reported fuel pump failures, which resulted in the car not starting or running properly. One owner had to wait a month for the part to arrive from Europe, indicating potential supply chain issues or lack of readily available spare parts.
- Water Pump Failure: Another owner reported that the water pump failed, which is a critical component of the car's cooling system. This failure can lead to engine overheating and potential engine damage if not addressed promptly.
- Transmission Problems: Numerous Mini Countryman models, including the 2011 model, are susceptible to transmission issues. These problems can manifest as abnormal noises, delayed shifting, excessive vibrations, and acceleration jumps. Regular transmission checks are recommended to prevent further damage.
- Exploding Sunroof: A relatively significant issue reported with the 2013 Mini Countryman is the sunroof shattering or exploding, causing potential safety hazards. Replacing the sunroof with shatterproof glass is recommended to fix this problem.
- Engine Overheating: The 2012 Mini Countryman reportedly has an engine that tends to overheat, causing symptoms like illuminated check engine lights, coolant leakage, blown head gaskets, etc. This issue is caused by faulty core plugs and coolant leaks.
- Internal Oil Leaks: Another noteworthy problem with the 2012 Countryman is internal oil leaks. Unlike common oil leaks, this is hard to detect outside the car, and the internal oil leak drips through the wiring sheath and may reach the electronic control unit (ECU), causing a short circuit and severe damage.
- Stretching Timing Chains: Petrol Countrymen, including the 2011 model, have been known to suffer from stretching timing chains if they're run low on oil. Therefore, it pays to keep checking the oil regularly, as a replacement timing chain is an expensive repair.
- Oil Leaks: Countrymen are known to suffer with oil leaks, often from the oil pump solenoid valve. It’s worth keeping an eye on leaks from this area and getting them rectified as soon as possible, as the drips have been known to contaminate electrical components, resulting in costly repairs.
These common problems indicate that the 2011 Mini Cooper S Countryman may require more frequent maintenance and repairs than other vehicles in its class. Therefore, potential buyers should carefully consider these issues and weigh them against the car's performance, style, and other positive attributes.

- Summary: CAR FIRE UNDER THE HOOD. ON SUNDAY, APRIL 15, 2018 I DROVE 10 MINUTES FROM HOME. I WAS PARKED IN A LOT FOR 5 MINUTES. CAME OUT OF STORE, STARTED ENGINE AND HEAVY SMOKE IMMEDIATELY STARTED FILLING THE INTERIOR AND BILLOWING UP FROM UNDER THE HOOD. I QUICKLY GOT OUT. OPENED THE HOOD. SAW FLAMES DEEP DOWN, JUST TO THE LEFT OF THE COOLANT EXPANSION TANK. HEAVY WHITE/GRAY SMOKE. CALLED 911, WHO RESPONDED QUICKLY (DANBURY CT FIRE DEPT.) THE OWNER OF THE STORE I HAD BEEN IN, CAME OUT AND WITNESSED FIRE/SMOKE. FIRE SUBSIDED AND FIRE DEPT CHECKED FOR HOT SPOTS, AUTHORIZED FOR TOWING BY AAA TO DEALER. MY MINI HAD BEEN IN THE DEALER'S SERVICE DEPT. APRIL 12, HAVING MAINTENANCE DONE... LESS THAN 48 HOURS BEFORE THIS FIRE HAPPENED. (WORK DONE INCLUDED NEW FAN BELT, OIL CHANGE, FILTER, BRAKES, 2 FRONT TIRES...) I PICKED MY CAR UP ON FRIDAY, APR. 13, AND DROVE HOME. AFTER 2 SHORT ERRANDS ON SUNDAY, THE FIRE BROKE OUT. MY CAR IS AT THE DEALER BEING FIXED BY MINI. MINI USA HAS AUTHORIZED THE WORK. VERY CONCERNED ABOUT WHAT DAMAGE THE INTENSE HEAT CAUSED TO SURROUNDING PARTS UNDER THE HOOD. SO MANY SENSORS AND CIRCUIT BOARDS/ELECTRICAL PARTS... SERVICE MGR SAID IT WAS CAUSED BY A "HOT WIRE." COULD IT HAPPEN AGAIN? I WILL NEVER FEEL SAFE IN THIS CAR AGAIN. I HAVE THE DANBURY FIRE DEPT. RECORD IN AN EMAIL, AND PHOTOS OF MY CAR BEING TOWED. THE DEALER HAS THE INSPECTION REPORT OF DAMAGE. FIRE HAPPENED JUST HOURS AFTER CAR HAD BEEN WORKED ON. COINCIDENCE? THEY SAY SO. NO PROOF. BUT, THIS SHOULD NOT HAPPEN. IF I HAD BEEN ON A ROAD/HIGHWAY (WHICH I ALMOST WAS), I WOULD'VE BEEN OVERCOME WITH SMOKE AND PROBABLY PASS OUT BEFORE PULLING OFF THE ROAD. THANK GOD I WAS IN A PARKING LOT AT THE TIME! VERY DANGEROUS AND SCARY. I OWNED THE CAR FOR 7+ YEARS. ONLY OWNER/DRIVER. 73K MILES. MAINTAINED VERY WELL. NO GAS/FUEL/OIL/COOLANT LEAKS.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-10-07
- VIN: WMWZC3C54BW
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: ON OCTOBER 7TH, 2014 THE KEY WOULD NOT COME OUT OF THE KEY SLOT. THE KEY IS NOT REQUIRED TO BE INSERTED TO START THE CAR BUT SIMPLY WITH YOU. HOWEVER, MY DAUGHTER HAD BORROWED THE CAR AND INSERTED THE KEY SO I HAVE NO WAY OF KNOWING IF THIS FAILURE OCCURRED ON THE DATE MENTIONED OR EARLIER. IT WAS IN FOR SERVICE ON AUGUST 25TH, 2014 SO SOMETIME BETWEEN THE TWO DATES THE FAILURE OCCURRED. I TOOK IT TO OUR LOCAL DEALER, MINI OF DES MOINES, AND THEY ALSO COULD NOT REMOVE THE KEY. THEY NOTICED THAT WITHOUT THE CAR RUNNING AND THE BRAKE PEDAL NOT DEPRESSED THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SHIFTER COULD BE MOVED TO ANY POSITION. THEY DID NOT KNOW IF THIS WOULD OCCUR WITH THE CAR RUNNING, I.E. INADVERTENTLY HITTING THE SHIFTER INTO REVERSE OR PARK WHILE DRIVING. THEY ALSO DID NOT KNOW IF THE CAR WAS ACTUALLY IN PARK WHEN INDICATED SO. I LEFT THE CAR, WAS GIVEN A LOANER, AND WHEN THEY CALLED ME THE DIAGNOSIS WAS THAT LIQUID HAD SPILLED IN A CUP HOLDER AND LEAKED THROUGH THE UNSEALED SCREW IN THE BOTTOM ONTO AN ELECTRICAL COMPONENT CAUSING THE PROBLEM. I AM WELL AWARE OF LIQUID SPILLING INTO THE CUP HOLDER AS THIS HAPPENED A COUPLE OF TIMES WHEN I FIRST GOT THE CAR DUE TO THE SPRING LOADED HOLDERS IN THE SIDE OF THE CUP HOLDER THAT I THEN REMOVED . THEY ARE ENGINEERED INCORRECTLY AND ALTHOUGH THE MANUAL STATES TO USE "LIGHTWEIGHT, NON-BREAKABLE CONTAINERS" THESE SPRING RETAINERS WILL POKE A HOLE IN STYROFOAM CUPS AND WILL COMPRESS A PAPER CUP, LIKE STARBUCKS, ENOUGH THAT LIQUID WILL EXPEL THROUGH THE TOP VENT HOLE AND DRINKING SLOT. IN ADDITION, WHILE ONE WOULD ASSUME THAT LIQUID WOULD OCCASIONALLY BE SPILLED IN A CUP HOLDER, AN ADDITIONAL ENGINEERING ERROR WAS MADE WHEN NO SEALING WASHER WAS USED ON THE RETAINING SCREW IN THE BOTTOM AND ANY LIQUID THE WOULD LEAK ON TO ANOTHER UNSEALED COMPONENT AND CAUSE THIS FAILURE. A $1,100.00 REPAIR COST FOR BMW'S INEPT ENGINEERING???
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2013-08-19
- VIN: WMWZC3C51BW

- Summary: WITH JUST OVER 16000 MILES ON MY 2011 MINI COOPER S COUNTRYMAN, MY CLUTCH IS BURNED OUT! HAVING IT TOWED TO THE CLOSEST MINI DEALERSHIP AT 70 MILES AWAY, THEY ARE SAYING THE FAILURE IS DUE TO ABUSE AND IS NOT COVERED BY MINI USA WARRANTEE. I HAVE BEEN DRIVER FOR OVER 40 YEARS WITH MOST OF MY CARS BEING MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS AND HAVE NEVER HAD TO REPLACE A CLUTCH. AFTER SOME RESEARCH ONLINE, THE CLUTCH SEEMS TO BE AN ISSUE WITH THE 2011 & 2012 COUNTRYMAN MODELS AND NOW HAVE SAID...'AS PART OF THE CONTINUAL REFINEMENT AND OPTIMIZATION OF MINI VEHICLES' THEY WERE MODIFYING THE CLUTCH ON THEIR 2013 MODELS! I AM STILL IN NEGOTIATIONS WITH MINI USA ON WHO WILL PAY FOR THE REPAIRS ON WHAT I SEE AS DEFECTIVE PARTS THAT SHOULD HAVE A RECALL ON THEM.

THE POLICE WERE CALLED AND A REPORT WAS FILED. THERE WERE NO INJURIES FROM THE EXPLOSION. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TOWED BY THE STATE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND THEY ADVISED HIM THAT THEY WOULD GET BACK TO HIM AT A LATER DATE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 120.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2011-04-30
- VIN: WMWZB3C52BW
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: WHEN ACCELERATING, THERE APPEARS TO BE A 1-1.5 SECOND DELAY FROM COMPLETE STOP POSITION TO START WHEN DEPRESSING THE ACCELERATOR. THIS DELAYED ACCELERATION IS PROBLEMATIC ONLY FROM COMPLETE STOPPING POSITION. EXAMPLE, AT PERPENDICULAR INTERSECTION WAITING TO TURN LEFT (PULLING OUT OF A GAS STATION OR MERGING INTO TRAFFIC, THE VEHICLE REQUIRES A ROLLING OR MOVING START BEFORE THE VEHICLE WILL ACTUALLY ACCELERATE OR AT A SAFE ENOUGH SPEED TO PULL OUT INTO TRAFFIC. WHEN I AM AT A COMPLETE STOP AND TRY TO ACCELERATE BY PRESSING THE ACCELERATOR FIRMLY FROM ANY COMPLETE STOP POSITION IN A SAFE ENOUGH SPEED TO CROSS TRAFFIC WHEN TURNING, THERE IS ALWAYS A DELAYED REACTION FROM THE TIME I DEPRESS THE PEDAL AND THE TIME THE VEHICLE TAKES OFF. THIS DOES NOT TO APPEAR AS A PROBLEM THAT HAPPENS ONLY ONCE IN A WHILE, BUT APPEARS ALL THE TIME AND TO BE A MANUFACTURER ISSUES WITH THE ELECTRONIC TRANSMISSION AND GEAR CONTROL. I CONTACTED THE DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT I SHOULD ACTIVATE THE SPORT BUTTON AND DE-ACTIVATE THE DCS CONTROL WHICH CONTROLS THE "SPIN-OUT" ACTION ON THE COUNTRYMAN. I HAVE TRIED THOSE RECOMMENDATIONS AND THE PROBLEM STILL EXIST. THIS IS NOT ONLY THE PROBLEM. THERE IS ALSO AN ISSUE WHEN I AM SIMPLY IN THE DRIVEWAY. WHEN STARTING THE CAR AND PUTTING THE VEHICLE IN REVERSE, THERE IS ALSO THAT "DELAYED" REACTION AFTER THE CAR IS ALREADY IN GEAR, ALMOST LIKE THE VEHICLE HAS TO THINK ABOUT MOVING BEFORE IT ACTUALLY DOES. THIS OCCURS EACH AND EVERY TIME WHILE IN THE VEHICLE. MY VEHICLE IS AN AUTOMATIC. I HAVE EXPERIENCE WITH BOTH AUTOMATIC AND MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS AND HAVE OVER 25 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE AND HAVE PURCHASED OVER 15 CARS IN MY DRIVING CAREER AND THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THAT I HAVE EVERY EXPERIENCED THIS TYPE DRIVING EXPERIENCE WITH AN AUTOMATIC.
INTERIOR LIGHTING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2011-04-24
- VIN: WMWSV3C53BT
- Components: INTERIOR LIGHTING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: OCCASIONALLY AND INTERMITTENTLY, THE DIGITAL AUDIO DISPLAY IN THE MIDDLE OF MY MINI'S LARGE SPEEDOMETER WINDOW GOES BLANK, WHILE ALLOWING YOU TO CHANGE CHANNELS AND CHOOSE FUNCTIONS (IPOD, TELEPHONE, RADIO, SATELLITE) WITHOUT BEING ABLE TO SEE WHAT YOU'RE CHOOSING. THE GAS MILEAGE DIGITAL DISPLAY ABOVE THE AUDIO SYSTEM IS READABLE AT ALL TIMES. OCCASIONALLY ALSO AN ORANGE LINE WILL GO THROUGH THE DIGITAL AUDIO DISPLAY HINDERING THE ABILITY TO READ IT COMPLETELY. I BROUGHT THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALER WITHIN 2 WEEKS OF PURCHASING IT NEW TO ADDRESS THE PROBLEM, BUT NOTHING WAS FOUND AND THE CAR WAS RETURNED WITHOUT A REPAIR AFTER 2 DAYS AT THE SHOP. I HAVE SUBSEQUENTLY EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM AND HAVE TAKEN PICTURES OF THE DISPLAY EACH TIME. *TR
