2001 Acura Tl problems
The Acura TL is a car that was manufactured by Acura, the luxury division of Honda. It was introduced in 1995 to replace the Acura Vigor and was badged for the Japanese-market from 1996 to 2000 as the Honda Inspire and from 1996 to 2004 as the Honda Saber. The TL was Acura's best-selling model until it was outsold by the MDX in 2007. In 2005, it ranked as the second best-selling luxury sedan in the United States behind the BMW 3 Series, but sales decreased after the 2008 model year. Four generations of the Acura TL were produced, with the final fourth generation TL premiering in 2008 as a 2009 model and ending production in 2014, when it was replaced together with the TSX by the TLX.
First generation (UA1–UA3; 1996–1998)
The TL "Touring Luxury" debuted as 1996 model, first with the 1996 2.5 TL available with the 2.5 L 176 hp (131 kW) SOHC 20-valve 5-cylinder engine from the Vigor. The 3.2 TL used the 3.2 L 200 hp (149 kW) SOHC 24v V6 from the second generation Acura Legend. The model with the 2.0-liter inline-five was not offered in the US market. The debut of the TL signaled Acura's shift from traditional vehicle names to alphanumeric designations. By replacing recognizable names such as Vigor and Legend with a two-letter designation, the luxury maker hoped to focus consumer attention on the Acura name. The TL was the first Acura model to adopt the new naming scheme.
The 2.5 TL was positioned as the sporty model and the 3.2 focused more upon a luxurious ride. There were minimal styling differences between the two, but the 3.2 TL had larger tires despite the 2.5 TL's more sporty marketing. Moreover, the added power in the 3.2 TL gave it better acceleration. Both engines were mounted in a front-rear, or longitudinal position. This contrasted with the more typical transverse engine mount style, and was intended to provide better weight distribution and reduce nose dive. The engine mount design resulted in an elongated hood for the first generation TL, a shorter front overhang and longer wheelbase, fitting for a near-luxury car. The inline-5 engine in the 2.5 TL competed with similar 5-cylinder engines offered in Audi and Volvo models.
The first 1996 Acura TL was manufactured at Sayama, Japan on March 28, 1995. Sales of the 2.5 TL began in spring 1995, but the 3.2 TL was delayed until fall because of a U.S.-Japan trade dispute. The U.S. government had threatened to impose 100% tariffs on higher-priced Japanese cars in response a growing U.S.-Japan trade deficit. Ultimately a deal was reached which avoided the tariffs.
The first generation Acura TL had standard features including dual airbags, antilock brakes, automatic climate control, a cassette/CD player sound system, and power windows and locks. Leather was standard on the more upscale 3.2 TL, while the 2.5 TL featured a firmer suspension setup. Like its predecessor, the Vigor, this generation TL was a 4-door pillared hardtop, with frameless windows.

I WAS GIVEN NO WARNING SIGNS, NO SYMPTOMS OF SHIFTING PROBLEMS, AND NO CONSOLE INDICATION THAT MY TRANSMISSION WAS RUNNING HOTTER THAN NORMAL. I UNDERSTAND THAT THERE WAS A RECALL ON MY YEAR MAKE AND MODEL, AND THAT MY TRANSMISSION WAS INCLUDED IN THAT RECALL. WHY DIDN'T ACURA FIX THIS PROBLEM? MY VEHICLE HAS ONLY 103,000 MI; THIS SHOULDN'T HAVE HAPPENED. *TR
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2013-01-07
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: I SPOKE TO A GENTLEMAN FROM THE NHTSA ON 2/6/13 WHO INFORMED ME THAT THE RECALL PERTAINING TO THE 2001 ACURA TL TRANSMISSION, 2ND TO 3RD GEAR SLIPPAGE THAT CAN RESULT IN TRANSMISSION LOCKUP AND CRASH, IS STILL VALID THROUGH APRIL OF 2014, WITH NO MILEAGE RESTRICTIONS AND IS TO BE REPLACED AT THE FULL COST OF THE MANUFACTURER (NHTSA RECALL I.D. 04V176, ACURA RECALL I.D. P39). IN AN ATTEMPT TO HAVE A PRODUCTIVE CONVERSATION WITH AN ACURA CLIENT RELATIONS REPRESENTATIVE ON 2/19/13, IN HOPES OF HAVING THE TRANSMISSION REPLACED AS THE VEHICLES TRANSMISSION IS DETERIORATING RAPIDLY, I WAS TOLD THAT THE GENTLEMAN WHO I SPOKE WITH FROM THE NHTSA WAS INCORRECT IN THE INFORMATION HE PROVIDED AND THAT THE RECALL HAS ALREADY EXPIRED. I WOULD LIKE THE NHTSA TO PLEASE CONTACT MYSELF AND ACURA CLIENT RELATIONS, IN WRITING, EXPLAINING THAT THE RECALL PERTAINING TO THE 2001 ACURA TL TRANSMISSION IS STILL VALID SO THAT I MAY TAKE THE NECESSARY STEPS IN HAVING THE TRANSMISSION REPLACED ASAP AND AVOID HAVING A MAJOR INCIDENT AS I FEAR FOR MINE AND MY FAMILY'S SAFETY. *TR
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2013-01-07
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: MY COMPLAINT IS TOWARD ACURA RELATIONS AND DEVAN ACURA OF NORWALK, CT REGARDING A SERIOUS TRANSMISSION PROBLEM. MY TRANSMISSION HAS BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH HAVING A HARD SHIFT/SLIPPAGE FROM 2ND TO 3RD GEAR, WHICH IS PART OF RECALL, I.D. 48580. THIS TYPE OF PROBLEM CAN RESULT IN TRANSMISSION LOCKUP, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH. A CASE MANAGER FROM ACURA RELATIONS EXPLAINED OVER THE PHONE THAT IF PROBLEM IS RECALL RELATED, THE COST OF REPAIRS WOULD BE COVERED. UNFORTUNATELY, EVEN THOUGH DEVAN ACURA OF NORWALK HAS DETERMINED THAT A HARD SHIFT/SLIPPAGE FROM 2ND TO 3RD GEAR EXISTS, THEY NEVER ASKED ME WHAT I FELT COMFORTABLE DOING, WHICH MY ANSWER WOULD BE TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION, AS IT PERTAINS TO THE RECALL, ESPECIALLY AS PROMISED BY ACURA RELATIONS. DEVAN ACURA OF NORWALK PERFORMED A TRANSMISSION FLUID FLUSH TO TRY AND RESOLVE THE PROBLEM, WHICH DID NOT IMPROVE THE DRIVABILITY OF THE VEHICLE, AS A HARD SHIFT/SLIPPAGE STILL EXISTS. PLEASE NOTE THAT I PAID FOR THIS VEHICLE BRAND NEW, IN FULL, FROM DEVAN ACURA OF NORWALK AND DO NOT APPRECIATE FEELING AS THOUGH ACURA RELATIONS AND DEVAN ACURA OF NORWALK HAS SHOWN A LACK OF CONCERN TOWARDS MINE AND MY FAMILY'S SAFETY, AS THEY CHOSE NOT TO FURTHER ASSIST IN THIS MATTER AND I FEAR FOR MY FAMILY'S SAFETY DRIVING THIS VEHICLE AND WOULD LIKE IT REPAIRED AS PROMISED BY ACURA RELATIONS (CASE NUMBER WILL BE PROVIDED UPON REQUEST). *TR
2001 Acura Tl recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2001 Acura Tl.
- Manufacturer: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.)
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
- Summary: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2001-2002 Acura 3.2CL, 2000-2003 Acura 3.5RL, 2000-2001 Acura 3.2TL, Honda CR-V and Honda Odyssey, 2001-2002 Acura MDX and 2000 Accord Coupe, Accord Sedan, Civic Coupe, and Civic Sedan vehicles. These vehicles may have received a replacement driver frontal air bag module as part of a vehicle repair. Due to a manufacturing issue, the replacement NADI inflator may absorb moisture, causing the inflator to rupture or the air bag cushion to underinflate.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating air bag deployment, an inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants. An underinflated air bag cushion may not properly protect the occupant. These scenarios increase the risk of serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the air bags in the vehicles, replacing the driver frontal air bag inflator with an inflator of a different design, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began October 1, 2020. Owners may contact American Honda's Customer Support & Campaign Center at 1-888-234-2138.
- Manufacturer: HONDA (AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CO.)
- Components: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
- Summary: ON SOME MINI VANS, SPORT UTILITY AND PASSENGER VEHICLES, CERTAIN OPERATING CONDITIONS CAN RESULT IN HEAT BUILD-UP BETWEEN THE COUNTERSHAFT AND SECONDARY SHAFT SECOND GEARS IN THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, EVENTUALLY LEADING TO GEAR TOOTH CHIPPING OR GEAR BREAKAGE.
- Consequence: GEAR FAILURE COULD RESULT IN TRANSMISSION LOCKUP, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.
- Remedy: ON VEHICLES WITH 15,000 MILES OR LESS, THE DEALER WILL UPDATE THE TRANSMISSION WITH A SIMPLE REVISION TO THE OIL COOLER RETURN LINE TO INCREASE LUBRICATION TO THE SECOND GEAR. ON VEHICLES WITH MORE THAN 15,000 MILES, THE DEALER WILL INSPECT THE TRANSMISSION TO IDENTIFY GEARS THAT HAVE ALREADY EXPERIENCED DISCOLORATION DUE TO OVERHEATING. IF DISCOLORATION EXISTS, THE TRANSMISSION WILL BE REPLACED IF DISCOLORATION IS NOT PRESENT, THE DEALER WILL PERFORM THE REVISION TO THE OIL COOLER RETURN LINE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON APRIL 21, 2004, FOR PILOT, ODYSSEY, AND MDX OWNERS. OWNERS OF THE ACCORD VEHICLES WILL START RECEIVING LETTERS ON JUNE 28, 2004, AND ON JUNE 29, 2004, FOR OWNERS OF THE TL AND CL VEHICLES. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT HONDA AT 1-800-999-1009 OR ACURA AT 1-800-382-2238.
- Manufacturer: AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CO.
- Components: SEAT BELTS:FRONT:BUCKLE ASSEMBLY
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: THE FOLLOWING VEHICLES WERE REPAIRED WITH INCORRECT PARTS: 2002 ACURA 3.2TL SEDANS WITH REPLACEMENT BUCKLES INSTALLED PER RECALL 01V-166001; CERTAIN 2000 ACURA 3.2TL VEHICLES WITH REPLACEMENT BUCKLES INSTALLED AS PRODUCT UPDATE REPAIRS; AND CERTAIN 2000-2002 ACURA 3.2TL VEHICLES WITH REPLACEMENT BUCKLES INSTALLED AS WARRANTY OR COLLISION REPAIRS. REPAIRS WERE MADE FROM MARCH 9 THROUGH JULY 27, 2001. SOME OF THE NONCOMPLIANT BUCKLES WERE MISLABELED AND REDISTRIBUTED TO ACURA DEALERS TO BE USED AS RECALL REPAIR PARTS. HONDA ALSO DETERMINED THAT INCORRECT FRONT SEAT BELT BUCKLE REPLACEMENT PARTS WERE USED FOR SOME PRODUCT UPDATE REPAIRS OF 2000 ACURA 3.2TL VEHICLES, AND WARRANTY OR COLLISION REPAIRS OF 2000-2002 3.2TL VEHICLES. THESE SEAT BELT BUCKLES MAY NOT COMPLY WITH REQUIREMENTS OF FMVSS NO. 209, "SEAT BELT ASSEMBLIES."
- Consequence: IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH, THE SEAT OCCUPANT MAY NOT BE PROPERLY RESTRAINED.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT, AND IF NECESSARY, REPLACE THE FRONT SEAT BELT BUCKLES. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN AUGUST 20, 2001. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT ACURA AT 1-800-999-1009.
Negative 2001 Acura Tl car reviews
Positive 2001 Acura Tl car reviews

I've owned this car since it was new, purchased in September 2000. The transmission was replaced by Acura at no extra charge when it had about 34,000 miles on it. Since then, I've had no issues with the transmission and the mileage currently stands at 153,000 miles. The car still drives and runs beautifully. I get it serviced regularly by an Acura dealership and I absolutely love their service. Even though it's twelve years old, people who don't know too much about cars think it's only 3 or 4 years old. Last month, I had the oil changed along with a tire rotation. When I was about to leave after the work was done, the mechanic who did the work came outside and offered me $6500 for it! I couldn't believe it.

I thought this one was just an upgraded Accord, but I was mistaken. The difference is like night and day.

The Acura TL is an excellent blend of characteristics that I was looking for. It has good handling, acceleration, a quiet ride, good fuel economy, and performance. It's stylish yet not pushy.

My wife has a car, but I sometimes borrow it when she's not using it and have her drive my truck instead. It's a wonderful vehicle - classy, sleek, peppy, and stylish. It makes you feel good when you're behind the wheel. It zips down the interstate at 90 with ease, and the fact that it gets 27 to 28 MPG is just the cherry on top for this feisty V-6.

Although Acuras may not receive high praise from critics for their conservative styling, you'll find plenty of reasons to consider purchasing one by checking out user opinions. Acuras are a Honda product and are known for their exceptional quality and reliability. Personally, I have owned two Acuras over the past 12 years, including a Vigor, and have experienced no mechanical issues beyond routine maintenance. Additionally, I have had very positive experiences with my local dealership, where the service matches the quality of the vehicle.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with the TL we purchased from the dealer. Other than some trouble with the transmissions, we haven't had any issues with the car. However, we've had to replace the transmission four times in just four years, and the car only has 67k miles on it. Acura has been great about taking care of the problem each time, and they even extended the warranty on the transmission to 7 years and 100k miles. Despite this, I'm still a bit hesitant to fully trust the car. The service advisor mentioned that there were some transmission issues with TLs built before 2004, but I still love the car and would consider buying another Acura in the future. Just not a TL built before 2004. Thanks for listening!

The wind noise is excessive and the front seats could benefit from being firmer. However, I strongly prefer my 91 Legend.

Overall performance is okay, but I have had some issues with the brakes, cruise control, and windshield since taking delivery of the car brand new. Unfortunately, during the first year, the car was in the shop constantly. I am disappointed in this car and have decided to trade it for another brand and model.
