Acura Rdx problems

The Acura RDX is a compact luxury crossover SUV produced by Acura, a luxury vehicle division of Honda, as the second crossover SUV offering from the brand after the mid-size MDX. Since it was introduced, it shared its platform with the Honda Civic and CR-V.
First generation (TB1/2; 2007)
Originally previewed as the Acura RD-X concept car, the production RDX had its debut at the 2006 New York Auto Show and went on sale on August 11, 2006. A facelifted 2010 model went on sale in August 2009, which featured the addition Acura's "power plenum" grille and a front-wheel drive option.
Engine
The first-generation RDX is powered by a 2.3-litre straight-4 turbocharged gasoline engine, rated at 240 bhp (179 kW; 243 PS) at 6,000 rpm with a torque peak of 260 ft⋅lbf (350 N⋅m) at 4,500 rpm. At the time, this was uncommon among Honda vehicles.
The K23A1 engine has all-aluminum construction, an i-VTEC head, and dual balance shafts. It was also one of the only four-cylinder powered luxury SUVs of its generation. Honda's variable flow turbocharger reduces turbo lag by using a valve to narrow the exhaust passage at low rpm, increasing the velocity of the exhaust flow and keeping the turbine spinning rapidly. At higher rpm, the valve opens to allow more exhaust flow for increased boost. The engine also features a top-mounted intercooler which receives air from the grille, channeled by ducting under the hood.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimated fuel mileage is 19 mpg‑US (12 L/100 km; 23 mpg‑imp) city and 23 mpg‑US (10 L/100 km; 28 mpg‑imp) highway miles per gallon. An updated EPA mileage estimate in February 2007 rated the RDX at 17 mpg‑US (14 L/100 km; 20 mpg‑imp) city and 22 mpg‑US (11 L/100 km; 26 mpg‑imp) highway.

Common Acura Rdx problems
The Acura RDX is known for its reliability and practicality, but like any vehicle, it has had some common problems over the years. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on owner complaints and data from repair and maintenance sites.
- Engine oil leaks: This issue has been reported by seven owners of the first-generation 2007 to 2012 Acura RDX. The oil pressure sensor is known to leak during normal operation, which can be fixed by inspecting, properly sealing, and possibly replacing the sensor.
- Improperly welded tow hitch: This problem affected only the 2007 Acura RDX and prompted a recall to ensure owners wouldn't pay for repairs. It is related to the manufacturing defect of the tow hitch.
- Cracked axles: The 2012 model year of the Acura RDX has been reported to have cracked axles, which can be a significant issue affecting the vehicle's drivability and safety.
- Rodents chewing on soy-based wire coverings: This issue was reported by owners of the 2015 model year. The soy-based insulation on the electrical wiring can attract animals into the undercarriage, causing damage that can cost around $2000 to fix.
- Squeaky brakes: The 2019 model year of the Acura RDX has been reported to have squeaky brakes, which can be a nuisance and potentially indicate a more serious issue with the braking system.
- Failing turbocharger: The Acura RDX is known for its turbocharged engine, but this component can fail over time, leading to reduced power and fuel efficiency. This issue is more common in first-generation models.
- Limp mode problem: This issue can occur when there is a problem with the transmission or engine, causing the vehicle to enter a reduced power mode to prevent further damage. This has been reported in various model years of the Acura RDX.
- Dim headlights: This issue can affect the safety of the vehicle, especially when driving at night. It has been reported by owners of various Acura RDX model years.
- Squeaking brake noises: This issue can be a nuisance and potentially indicate a more serious problem with the braking system. It has been reported in various model years of the Acura RDX.
It is important to note that while these issues have been reported by some owners, the Acura RDX has a strong reputation for reliability, and many of these problems are relatively rare. When considering purchasing a used Acura RDX, it is always a good idea to research the specific model year and vehicle history to be aware of any potential issues.

Acura Rdx 2018
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-09
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-09
- VIN: 5J8TB4H39JL
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: My 2018 RDX has started to jerk when I stop and then restart. I have noticed some hesitation and a bit of jerky driving but today it was very noticeable. I could barely go above 40 miles an hour after I started driving after a stop light and the car was very jerky. It seems to be either a fuel pump or transmission issue. I am going to check with the RDX dealership where I bought the car in 2018 but I wanted to report the issue. I also looked up the VIN on my car for a recall and the system said my car had not been recalled. Not sure why my 2018 RDX is different from other 2018 RDX models that were recalled.
Acura Rdx 2019
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-06
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-06
- VIN: 5J8TC2H77KL
- Components: POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: The breaks did not work while in a parking lot right after switching into drive. No major risk of any injury where this occurred. Not reported to the dealer, not inspected. No injury, no property damage. I left my wife in the vehicle with the car in park and went into the store. I came out 15 minutes later, car was running. I got in, put my foot on the break, and switch to drive? The car started rolling forward on its own. I repeatedly tried the breaks, but no response. I had steering. I gave it a little gas, and the engine reved like it was in neutral. I looked down and that point the car indicated it was in neutral. My wife said that none of the drive indicators were on while I had the issue. At some point the breaks started working, after I gave it a little gas? I got the car into drive, and tested it before moving on to verify it was behaving correctly. The forward motion of the vehicle was probably due to the slope it was parked on, rather than the car's idle power. This also matches the car then reporting it was in neutral. The biggest issue was no breaks at the point it started rolling forward. My comment was that was weird, but it scared my wife, so I am reporting it. I was operating the vehicle.
Acura Rdx 2020
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-05
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-05
- VIN: 5J8TC2H72LL
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: I entered my 2020 Acura RDX after it was parked for several hours while I was at work. The outdoor temperature was around 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Upon closing the drivers door I hear a crashing noice and noticed the rear lift gate glass shattered and fell into the rear cargo area. This appears to be a very widespread issue with this make and model and is a serious safety concern that should be recalled.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-01
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-04
- VIN: 5J8TB3H38FL
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: The low beam headlights are so dim and weak it is unsafe to drive. I have read where Acura rdx years 2012-2015 have a lot of reports of this problem. I understand Honda has recalled another style of Acura in same time years but not acknowledged this. I have used brand name headlight restoration kit and paid to replace the headlight bulbs(low beam) but there is no improvment This is very unsafe and Honda needs to replace/repair the headlights.
Acura Rdx 2015
- Date Of Incident: 2022-06-01
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-02
- VIN: 5J8TB4H31FL
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: I purchased my 2015 Acura RDX in October of 202o. At about 90K miles, two years later, the Low-Beam headlights started getting dimmer and it is now 4 years into owning the vehicle and literally impossible to see at night. It is not the lens clouding over, nor is it the bulbs which have been replaced a couple times now. Looking online I see that there is a problem with the reflective coating on the inside of the headlight assembly, as it deteriorates it makes the headlights dim at night. This needs to be recalled by ACURA and is definitely a safety hazard! I've already almost been in two accidents because of this. Leaving high beams on at night is the only option which poses another hazard to oncoming traffic.
Acura Rdx 2013

- Date Complaint: 2024-10-01
- VIN: 5J8TB4H33DL
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: My headlights are dim and this started happening about 3 years ago when my car 7-years-old. I have to use my brights to drive at night. The Ron Tonkin Acura of Portland, OR told me the projectors are bad and that both headlights need to be placed for $2000. This is luxury vehicle and this situation is ridiculous. This needs to be a recall. Others have complained online about the same issue.
Acura Rdx 2014
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-01
- Date Complaint: 2024-09-30
- VIN: 5J8TB4H57EL
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: Driving at night the headlights are dim and it's difficult to see. I have read online this is a very common issue with this make and model. Bulb replacement did not fix the issue, the low beam lights are dangerously low. When it is difficult to see it makes driving dangerous. The dealership confirmed this is a common complaint amongst customers. It has not yet been inspected by the dealership, though they are familiar with the problem. There have not been any warnings or messages notifying that my lights are dim.

- Summary: My 2014 RDX has defective headlights and Acura Honda will not address it. They say the headlight assembly is ok, but the lights are too dim to drive in darkness. Acura Honda customer service headquarters offers no solution. There is much online information about this defect. Acura Honda should be required to address this safety hazard expeditiously.

My spouse and I have a tradition of buying a new car every six to seven years. Recently, I purchased the RDX, which was a great choice for me as I was looking for something upscale and fun. Additionally, I needed a car that could handle winter weather and had cold weather features. The RDX met all my requirements, including heated seats, heated outside mirrors (which I love because I hate scraping), AWD, XM radio (I prefer XM over Sirius because of the better channels and no Howard Stern), Bluetooth, and good acceleration. The car also has a classy look, even without the BMW, Lexus, or Mercedes nameplate. The only feature that I missed having was auto-headlights.

This car is perfect! I traded my '07 MDX for better gas mileage and because I only used the 3rd row twice last year. The RDX is so much better than the Lexus RX that I was considering. Although the RX may have a few more options, the Lexus RX ride is 'mushy' compared to the quick and nimble Acura RDX. My husband, who drives a BMW 535i, absolutely LOVES my RDX - he always wants to switch cars! The RDX is roomy yet sporty, super smooth, agile and quick. We have 3 kids and they fit comfortably in the back seat (my oldest is 5'7'). I would have liked one more option package (heated steering wheel, heated 2nd row seats, wood grain trim), but it's not a deal breaker. We are extremely happy with the value of the RDX for the price.

I absolutely loved driving this SUV! The seats were incredibly comfortable and much nicer than those in other luxury SUVs I test drove. The storage and cargo capacity were also impressive. The panoramic moonroof was a fantastic feature, providing a great distraction for kids when they start getting antsy. I remember one time when I asked my kids how many clouds they could see, and it was so much fun! Although the moonroof shade cover did get stuck in the open position once two summers ago on a really hot day, it started working again a couple of days later and I haven't had an issue since. The SHAWD was amazing, especially when powering around curves, making it an absolute blast to drive. The infotainment system wasn't as fancy as some of those wrap-around dash displays found in Mercedes, but it was very easy to use, making it safe to use while driving. The different drive modes were great too. I usually drove in sport mode, but when the family was in the car, I tended to put it on comfort mode, which my wife appreciated. The snow mode was also a lifesaver during winter, improving the control I had on snowy roads. Although there was no drive mode that offered better fuel economy, and it was slightly annoying that I had to disable the auto idling each time I started the car up, these were minor complaints compared to all of the great features this car had to offer. UPDATE: I had the car for 4.5 years before recently trading it in for a new 2024 RDX. I had no issues with the vehicle, but I wanted a refresh. The 2024 RDX I got also had a quieter cabin due to more noise-canceling foam in the frame, better brake engagement, and improved acceleration (plus some extra features based on the trim). I'm still happy that I went with the RDX both times over the Q5 or X3.You can't go wrong with any of the other vehicles, but I still feel that the RDX is the better bang for your buck and a more comfortable ride than its German rivals.

I really enjoy Honda Motor Company. I previously owned an MDX and loved it, but opted for the 2wd version this time since I don't need SH-AWD in Texas. It gets slightly better mpg, but I do wish that the RDX, being a 4 cyl., would get at least 20 MPG. In the city, I only average 17 MPG, even though I'm not a lead-foot. The tech package is fantastic and very similar to my MDX's, but it also controls my iPod and provides weather forecasts. I love the hands-free talk features and the feel of the steering. I don't use the paddle-shifters, but the ride is sportier and quicker than the MDX, albeit slightly bumpier. Road noise is not an issue. There's plenty of room for us, but we don't regularly haul anything other than groceries. I don't tow anything and don't plan to.

I recently traded in my 2012 RDX Tech, which was considered the loaded model, for the 2019 RDX Advance. I was hoping to get the ASPEC for the rims, but since the Advance was loaded like the ASPEC, I decided to go with the black Advance with black interior and upgraded to black rims. Let me tell you, it's a stunning car! The ride is smooth and comfortable, and it exceeded my expectations when I drove it out of state the second day I had it. The handling on sport or sport+ mode was nice and tight, and the seats are soft and supple. I especially loved the lane keep assist and cruise control features, which made driving a breeze. The panoramic sunroof is also a gorgeous addition. While the touch pad takes some getting used to, it gets easier with practice. However, there are a few cons to note. A small space for coins would be nice, and a bigger center console would be a great addition. Additionally, the navigation system could use an upgrade, as there were portions of not-so-new roads where I was 'flying in the gray' on the screen because those roads weren't recognized. Overall, I'm thrilled with my new car!

Considering an RDX? It looks amazing on paper, no doubt. However, before making a decision, it's important to do your research. You may want to look up the RDX Class Action Lawsuit to learn more about the experiences of some RDX owners, including myself. While the car has many great features, some owners have reported daily frustrations and safety issues with the electronics system. For example, there have been reports of freezes, shut downs, error messages, and sporadically non-functioning features. Even with the latest firmware, Apple CarPlay has been known to quit on a random but consistent basis while driving, which can be frustrating when navigating on a tricky patch of road. Additionally, the touchpad interface may not work as well with CarPlay or Android Auto, which can be a disappointment for those who use these apps frequently. It's important to note that Acura is working to revise the firmware and improve the system, but there is no guarantee that all issues will be resolved. Overall, the RDX is a great car, but it's important to be aware of these potential issues before making a purchase. But remember, you're not just buying a car on paper. It's important to find a car that not only offers great value for your money, but also works reliably.

My wife and I decided to try out an Acura after owning a BMW X3. We thought that since Honda is known for great engineering, an Acura would be a great example of the company's efforts. Unfortunately, we have experienced some issues with the RDX. Let me start with the issues that the dealership technicians have been unable to fix. The transmission can be slow to respond when going from drive to reverse and vice versa, especially at slow speeds like when parking. It feels like a transmission with over 100,000 miles on it. The front brakes and suspension are also loud and sound like an old car with worn bushings. When going from reverse to drive, you can hear the pads release and the suspension settling as the weight shifts. Additionally, the steering at slow speeds when parking the car is not well dampened and stops with a hard and loud thunk. The last car I experienced this in was a 2006 Corolla. There are also some issues that are fixable but have not yet been resolved. For example, the sunroof makes a loud crack whenever the car's chassis flexes, such as when going up a driveway. A recall service was completed replacing the window frame, but the issue has not gone away. The infotainment screen also routinely displays blue or black and white static. A recall service had the connectors replaced twice, but the issue has not gone away. However, there are some good things worth mentioning. Once the car gets up to speed, the suspension and steering are very nice and composed. The seats are also very comfortable and supportive, which is the primary reason my wife chose the car. The plastics and switch gear are high quality and nothing feels cheap. The leather is also nice, especially when you treat it with some leather conditioner.I'm not sure if we just got unlucky or if we received a particularly bad example of the car, but it seems unlikely to have so many quality issues on one car. Can anyone else relate? Please feel free to comment.

I've had my new RDX for 4 months and put 5k miles on it. Unfortunately, I've experienced some issues with gear shifting, brakes, and suspension. It's frustrating to be driving a brand new car that doesn't feel quite right. The dealership has informed me that Acura is aware of these issues, but they can't fix them until there's an official recall. They're still investigating the cause of the problems. I've even started videoing the noises and issues to protect myself, and it seems to be helping. This is my third time at the service center, and it's been a bit of a challenge not to warn other customers. Despite my disappointment, I still believe this car has great potential. I apologize for any typos, as I'm writing this on my phone while waiting at the dealership.

I've been driving this car for just over 2 years now and it has 40,000 miles on it. Overall, it's been a joy to drive, with only routine maintenance needed. However, I have experienced some ongoing issues with Apple CarPlay, which can be frustrating. Despite the dealer replacing the computer once, the problem persists and Acura has yet to find a solution. If Apple CarPlay is important to you, it may be best to avoid the 2021 RDX until Acura resolves the issue. I learned about the problem shortly after purchasing the car and unfortunately, it has not been resolved despite efforts to fix it. Hopefully, Acura will find a solution soon.

As a lifelong Honda driver and fan, I have some feedback on my recent experience with the car. While the drive itself is terrific and sporty enough for a 4 cylinder car, I have noticed a few issues with the touch pad and Airplay. Sometimes the touch pad can be a bit jumpy, and Airplay doesn't work about every 5th time, which can be frustrating. However, I do find the seats to be quite comfortable. The seat belt anchor could be 1/2 inch longer, and the driver's side heat vent blows into the steering wheel and cannot be properly adjusted. While my MPG has been at the lower end of the expected range, I understand that with Covid, I'm doing very little highway driving. Overall, I appreciate Honda's efforts and look forward to seeing improvements in future models.
