2023 Acura Rdx problems
The Acura RDX is a compact luxury crossover SUV produced by Acura, a luxury vehicle division of Honda, as the second crossover SUV offering from the brand after the mid-size MDX. Since it was introduced, it shared its platform with the Honda Civic and CR-V.
First generation (TB1/2; 2007)
Originally previewed as the Acura RD-X concept car, the production RDX had its debut at the 2006 New York Auto Show and went on sale on August 11, 2006. A facelifted 2010 model went on sale in August 2009, which featured the addition Acura's "power plenum" grille and a front-wheel drive option.
Engine
The first-generation RDX is powered by a 2.3-litre straight-4 turbocharged gasoline engine, rated at 240 bhp (179 kW; 243 PS) at 6,000 rpm with a torque peak of 260 ft⋅lbf (350 N⋅m) at 4,500 rpm. At the time, this was uncommon among Honda vehicles.
The K23A1 engine has all-aluminum construction, an i-VTEC head, and dual balance shafts. It was also one of the only four-cylinder powered luxury SUVs of its generation. Honda's variable flow turbocharger reduces turbo lag by using a valve to narrow the exhaust passage at low rpm, increasing the velocity of the exhaust flow and keeping the turbine spinning rapidly. At higher rpm, the valve opens to allow more exhaust flow for increased boost. The engine also features a top-mounted intercooler which receives air from the grille, channeled by ducting under the hood.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimated fuel mileage is 19 mpg‑US (12 L/100 km; 23 mpg‑imp) city and 23 mpg‑US (10 L/100 km; 28 mpg‑imp) highway miles per gallon. An updated EPA mileage estimate in February 2007 rated the RDX at 17 mpg‑US (14 L/100 km; 20 mpg‑imp) city and 22 mpg‑US (11 L/100 km; 26 mpg‑imp) highway.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-01
- VIN: 5J8TC1H62PL
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The infotainment system on this vehicle keeps failing when using Apple Carplay. The problem consistently happens when driving. The problem consists of the apple carplay going black screen and disconnecting entirely and then taking long to reconnect. This is a safety issue if you’re using the gps navigation from iOS while driving. The problem has been reported to the Acura Service dealer multiple times and they were able to reproduce it as well. They have said there is an interruption caused by satellite communications interfering with carplay while driving. They said currently no fix for this issue.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-31
- VIN: 5J8TC1H59PL
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: Highlight: The car was able to be started with a button press and driven away without any key inside the car. (Also, some side information that the car had it's annual check-up on the Saturday before this incident). Normally my wife keeps her purse in the house on the counter (along with the spare key in a drawer under that counter). Previously, if she forgot her purse (and car keys inside the purse), she would head out to the garage and attempt to start the car (she keeps it unlocked in the garage). In a normal situation, the car would beep at her that she didn't have the key and she would go into the house to grab her purse. On 7/31, after a frazzling day, she got a call from her doctor to come to their office for a checkup (40 minutes away). She forgot her purse again; however, this time, the car started without any warning. She took the complete drive to the doctor's office shut off the car and then realized she didn't have her purse. She even tried to turn the car back on to see if the key was in the car, it did not start. She called me, I checked her purse and spare key were both in the same location they were always in. I did remotely try to start the car to see if she could drive it back with me starting it, however, it wouldn't let her take it out of park. She continued with her doctor's appointment. Inconveniently, I grabbed her purse and took my car 40 minutes to drop off her keys and back. Luckily, she was at a doctor's office and in a safe space, however, this has the potential to be very inconvenient and unsafe for others.
EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-16
- VIN: 5J8TC1H57PL
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: I am leasing the ACURA RDX 2023 . Currently mileage in 11444. This car start has oxidized on right side of headlight 4 months ago. I came to service in NIELLO ACURA. They called Acura factory service . It is not under warranty. They can’t do anything for my car. I only had this car 1 years . This is total defective .
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-04
- VIN: 5J8TC2H7XPL
- Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: The contact owns a 2023 Acura RDX. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 35 MPH, the Forward Collision Avoidance: Emergency Automatic Braking inadvertently activated, and the vehicle stopped. The contact was able to regain control of the vehicle, veer to the shoulder, and contacted the dealer to have the feature deactivated. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 7,888.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-03
- VIN: 5J8TC2H6XPL
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: The infotainment screen went blank 4 times. It works intermittently and reset itself. The dealer performed service bulletin S/B 24-004 on May 21, 2024. Since then it has gone out twice. I taking the vehicle in again. I seen there are issues with that system draining the battery and the car not starting. That had to me this morning.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-08
- VIN: 5J8TC1H50PL
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: On entering the highway and accelerating quickly, engine lost power and car entered limp mode, refusing to exceed 60 MPH. Also, check engine light began flashing. Very dangerous situation in heavy traffic all going over 70 MPH. Exited at next exit, shut down car, then restarted with no further issues.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-28
- VIN: 5J8TC2H88PL
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Infotainment system fails while using Android auto after receiving or making a phone call, which results in navigation via Google Maps unable to provide directions. The only manner in which I found temporarily resolves the issue, is restarting the infotainment system, which requires the vehicle to be stopped turned off and the driver’s door opened. This poses a grave safety risk while operating the vehicle, especially in heavy traffic conditions especially in inclement weather conditions, which I have unfortunately experienced on multiple occasions. on my second visit to the dealership i was advised by the service advisor at the dealership, that Honda is ‘aware of an uptick in reports with Android Auto and new phone models, and there is no fix identified, and any fix will most likely be with a software update.’ I as also advised that as an alternate method of restoring the connection between the phone and the car is to turn off the wi-fi and Bluetooth connections on the phone, then turn it back on, and once its turned back on, use the infotainment system to reconnect the phone. This advice is reckless at best as it requires me to move my attention from operating the vehicle to resolve this issue.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-01
- VIN: 5J8TC1H64PL
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Fast blinking engine light, and car not able to accelerate past 40mph. Was informed by dealership that it was possible water intrusion but had no guarantee or adequate mitigation strategy to ensure the problem would not occur other than indicating it is normal behavior to expect during heavy down pour!! The following codes were presented to dealership service dept after performing diagnostic: P0300, P0301, P0304 Car has 10k miles and it’s a 2023 RDX A Spec. Another issue happening with the car is an intermittent “Brake Failure. See Dealership” message on the dashboard. Was told it’s expected behavior for this to sometimes happen and due to no permanent code present, they cannot repair or identify the issue. I guess the breaks have to fail while driving before they actually prevent an accident from happening?!!!
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-07-17
- VIN: 5J8TC2H85PL
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: My name is Jorge L Cremades, my mobile phone is 786-546-6956. Today, 7/17/2023, around 2:42 PM EST, as I was driving / backing up in my driveway, my 2023 RDX shattered it's rear glass. As I was backing up in my driveway and looking through the side and back mirrors, I heard a loud noise and when I looked back into my car I saw my rear glass was blown away like it exploded or something similar. I bought this vehicle on 5/15/2023.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-16
- VIN: 5J8TC2H58PL
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: On a new ACURA RDX with 10,771 miles my wife was charged $315 dollars by the local ACURA dealer for "differential service" because "sub code 6" was on the maintenance minder. I believe this is a scam or any differential service should be under warranty. I pursued the complaint with HONDA extensively on the phone and just now was called back by HONDA and told that is regular maintenance and is not covered by the new car warranty. No car that I have ever owned needed differential service after 5 months - this is a scam.
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-17
- VIN: 5J8TC2H75PL
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: My issue is with the liftgate on all Acura models including my own RDX. I was sitting on the edge of the van with the liftgate fully opened taking off my spikes after golfing. I inadvertantly triggered the fob in my pocket when i leaned forward causing the liftgate to close. At first i did not realize it was closing on me ,but jumped up and it caught me on my upper back. I avoided serious injury. Brought it to the dealership and it appears to be common to all makes of acura with liftgates. Serious pressure has to be put on the liftgate in order for it to stop . Page 177 of my manual states the if the liftgate detects resistance it will reverse itself. We tested it at the dealership and a great amount of pressure has to be used for it to stop and reverse. This is a serious defect and needs correction before someone gets seriously injured. The service advisor almost hurt her arm trying to get the liftgate to stop . It is not only my vehicle. the sensors do not react appropriately. I have had two Nissan Murano's before purchasing this vehicle and as soon as you got in the way of the liftgate as it closed it stopped and reversed itself. Acura has a serious problem here and it needs to be recalled and corrected immediately. I am totally surprised if this has not been brought to anyone's attention. Hopefully you will test this and see what I am expressing here. Thank you for you time and and I await your response .
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-05-02
- VIN: 5J8TC2H55PL
- Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: The contact owns a 2023 Acura RDX. The contact stated while driving approximately 70 MPH and overtaking another vehicle, the contact moved to the right lane and the vehicle started beeping with the Forward Collision Assist system engaging abruptly. The contact stated that the brake was applied independently without warning. The driver was able to avoid a collision. There were no warning lights illuminated. There were no other objects or vehicles nearby. The contact called the local dealer, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 2,000.
STRUCTURE,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-01-13
- VIN: 5J8TC2H76PL
- Components: STRUCTURE,VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: On Friday, January 13, 2023, the rear hatch window on my 2023 RDX spontaneously shattered while it was sitting in my garage. After I discovered it, I searched for a cause and found nothing. I had just purchased this vehicle on 12/3/22. I discovered online similar complaints being made about the rear windshield glass and sunroof exploding in previous model years. The photos of the previous rear hatch window explosions matched exactly what my RDX looked like. I also discovered an Acura Service Bulletin #22-014 dealing with this issue for the 2019 and 2020 model years. In answer to your questions . . . it was the rear hatch window (aka, rear windshield glass) which failed. The vehicle is now with the dealer; inspection would have to be done quickly as I have made a warranty claim to have it repaired. Safety could have been an issue had I been in the vehicle. Problem has existed on previous models. No one except the dealer has inspected the RDX. There were no warning signals with before the failure or afterwards.

You were fortunate enough to find this in just 4 hours in April in Atlanta. Congratulations! This is your second RDX, the first one being a 2016. You must really love the RDX, as it is a very high quality machine! It's great to hear that the touch pad is not an issue for you. You and your wife have found a great solution by using Siri to get Waze and the radio station she wants. When the time comes, it sounds like you will most likely get another RDX. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

I really enjoy my 2022 Acura RDX A Spec! However, there is an intermittent noise it makes when backing up that can be a bit distracting. I've noticed that people sometimes stare when they hear it, which can be a bit embarrassing. Acura has informed me that this is a normal noise for this model, but I didn't experience it with my previous 2019 RDX. I would appreciate it if Acura could investigate this further. Despite this issue, I still love my car and look forward to driving it every day!

Great to hear that you're enjoying a smooth driving experience and an excellent sound system!

I'm glad I switched from Toyota to Acura because of the RDX's sleek exterior look. However, I did notice that I had to switch to a higher grade of gas (91+) and the mpg on the AWD RDX is not great, especially when I'm on the interstate 90% of the time. Despite this, I find all other aspects of the vehicle to be good. If you're looking for sales or service, I recommend going to Advantage Acura in Naperville instead of McGrath in downtown Chicago.

I can tell you really love your new RDX! It's great to hear that you're enjoying it so much. I noticed that this is your first RDX, but you've had three other Acuras before - that's impressive! It sounds like you're really happy with your purchase, and I'm glad to hear that it's such a beautiful car that drives like a dream.

The charging station does not work for Apple phones! The lens on Apple phones raises the angle, so the flat charging station does not work, resulting in a dead battery.

Although I appreciate the sound system, I find the touchpad and navigating around the settings to set up favorites to be quite challenging and time-consuming. Despite having leased the car for only two weeks, I am considering other options due to the difficulties I have experienced with the radio system.

In April 2023, we purchased a brand new Acura RDX Aspec after driving an Audi Q5 for 10 years. Unfortunately, the Audi started consuming oil and rusting, so we decided to upgrade. The Acura was a great price and we loved its looks, size, and drive. However, we live on a gravel road and encountered some issues with the brake pads and dust pan behind them. Gravel would get stuck and cause high-pitched squeaking and squealing. Despite the dealership being unable to find a solution, we endured the situation for 3 months before deciding to trade it in for a different brand. Additionally, we noticed a lot of road noise coming from the bottom of the car. Although it was a great car, we wouldn't recommend it for those who regularly drive on gravel roads due to this design flaw. We ended up purchasing a new Mercedes GLC 300 and have had no issues. We hope our fellow farmers and countrymen/women can learn from our experience instead of making the same mistake. 😊
Jairo Mohr 2024-06-08
The car seems to be lacking some features for its price point, such as automatic windshield wipers and parking assist. Additionally, the brakes tend to make loud noises after a few months of use, which can be unpleasant for the driver and passengers. Some reviews on Google have also mentioned this issue. Overall, I understand the frustration and disappointment with the car's performance. Thank you for sharing your experience.
Hugh Crona 2024-04-09
Unfortunately, at the moment, Acura does not have the wiring harness available to install a hitch on the 2022 RDX with A-Spec technology, and there is no date for when this will be available. We understand that this may be disappointing, and we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. We appreciate your feedback and will take it into consideration for future improvements. Thank you for choosing Acura.
