2019 Acura Rdx problems

The Acura RDX is a compact luxury crossover SUV produced by Acura, a luxury vehicle division of Honda, as the second crossover SUV offering from the brand after the mid-size MDX. Since it was introduced, it shared its platform with the Honda Civic and CR-V.
First generation (TB1/2; 2007)
Originally previewed as the Acura RD-X concept car, the production RDX had its debut at the 2006 New York Auto Show and went on sale on August 11, 2006. A facelifted 2010 model went on sale in August 2009, which featured the addition Acura's "power plenum" grille and a front-wheel drive option.
Engine
The first-generation RDX is powered by a 2.3-litre straight-4 turbocharged gasoline engine, rated at 240 bhp (179 kW; 243 PS) at 6,000 rpm with a torque peak of 260 ft⋅lbf (350 N⋅m) at 4,500 rpm. At the time, this was uncommon among Honda vehicles.
The K23A1 engine has all-aluminum construction, an i-VTEC head, and dual balance shafts. It was also one of the only four-cylinder powered luxury SUVs of its generation. Honda's variable flow turbocharger reduces turbo lag by using a valve to narrow the exhaust passage at low rpm, increasing the velocity of the exhaust flow and keeping the turbine spinning rapidly. At higher rpm, the valve opens to allow more exhaust flow for increased boost. The engine also features a top-mounted intercooler which receives air from the grille, channeled by ducting under the hood.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimated fuel mileage is 19 mpg‑US (12 L/100 km; 23 mpg‑imp) city and 23 mpg‑US (10 L/100 km; 28 mpg‑imp) highway miles per gallon. An updated EPA mileage estimate in February 2007 rated the RDX at 17 mpg‑US (14 L/100 km; 20 mpg‑imp) city and 22 mpg‑US (11 L/100 km; 26 mpg‑imp) highway.

POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-06
- VIN: 5J8TC2H77KL
- Components: POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: The breaks did not work while in a parking lot right after switching into drive. No major risk of any injury where this occurred. Not reported to the dealer, not inspected. No injury, no property damage. I left my wife in the vehicle with the car in park and went into the store. I came out 15 minutes later, car was running. I got in, put my foot on the break, and switch to drive? The car started rolling forward on its own. I repeatedly tried the breaks, but no response. I had steering. I gave it a little gas, and the engine reved like it was in neutral. I looked down and that point the car indicated it was in neutral. My wife said that none of the drive indicators were on while I had the issue. At some point the breaks started working, after I gave it a little gas? I got the car into drive, and tested it before moving on to verify it was behaving correctly. The forward motion of the vehicle was probably due to the slope it was parked on, rather than the car's idle power. This also matches the car then reporting it was in neutral. The biggest issue was no breaks at the point it started rolling forward. My comment was that was weird, but it scared my wife, so I am reporting it. I was operating the vehicle.

ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-15
- VIN: 5J8TC2H74KL
- Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Near the first of the year 2024 I received a fuel pump recall notice for my 2019 Acura RDX. To date, no parts for addressing this issue have been available and no timeline has been made available as to when parts would be available. I am planning my annual trip to the Eastern Sierra in early September where no Acura dealer is available nearby. Should the fuel pump fail during that trip it would be a significant inconvenience for me, including interruption of medical appointments, room and board expenses, pet sitting expenses, etc., as I have been told by Honda that in such an emergency situation the car would have to be towed to the nearest dealership, with the part being specially ordered which would take 2 weeks and that I may be responsible for my room and board, and other costs during that period. I find this behavior to be outrageous. Additionally I have been told by my local dealer that it is not possible to determine possible failure beforehand as either it is working or it has failed. This is totally opposite from what I was told by Honda which was to schedule an appointment with a dealer to determine the status of the fuel pump so that they could special order one for replacement if it demonstrated potential failure. This entire issue reeks of poor and ineffective management of this situation by Honda, likely putting costs over safety putting me at substantial risk for this trip that was planned a year ago and likely will cost me my deposit and access privileges if canceled. As such, I am requesting that NHTSA hold Honda/Acura accountable for this disgraceful behavior, putting owners of their vehicles at substantial risk, and demand that they explore and take immediate actions to resolve the parts shortage in a reasonable amount of time.

- Summary: Spontaneous Shattering of 2019 Acura Back Windshield On June 3, 2023, while our 2019 RDX was parked with the back hatch open as we were packing to return home from a weekend away, we heard a loud noise. To our shock, we discovered the rear windshield had shattered, scattering thick black glass both inside and outside the vehicle. Fortunately, no one was near the car at the time, including our toddler and infant grandchildren, whom we transport in this vehicle twice a week. A quick search revealed that there have been reported defects and incidents of shattering windshields in 2019-2023 Acura RDX models. We were dismayed to learn that Honda has been aware of this issue since 2020 and has only notified its dealers in 2023. We understand that American Honda is currently facing legal action for not addressing this defect adequately. We were shocked and concerned that we had not been made aware of this issue, given the safety risks involved. We immediately contacted the dealership from which we purchased the car, seeking guidance on how to safely get the vehicle to them for repair. We assumed that Honda would take responsibility for this known defect. However, we were informed by two managers, that Honda is not taking responsibility for this issue. The thick black glass exploded with a loud and startling sound. The broken glass surrounded inside and outside of the car and continued to fall as we researched what to do. The danger was to my husband packing the car, to my toddler and infant grandchildren had this occurred any Tuesday or Thursday we transportation in this car, to us had it happened while driving as the sound was like a gunshot or crash, and other drivers had we reacted.

The vehicle was repaired but the failure persisted. The contact was concerned about the safety of the vehicle. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 49,000.
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-18
- VIN: 5J8TC2H74KL
- Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: While driving today around 30 MPH using cruise control the display suddenly changed from showing a vehicle icon on the HUD and dashboard display to a black box with a white line around it with the words in white "Cruise Mode" and disabled my cruise control operation while I was driving. This action almost resulted in a rear end collision with the vehicle in front of me as I was barely able to stop the vehicle before hitting the rear of the car in front of me. There was no warning no message that the function was being disabled. It just suddenly happened. I have contacted multiple dealers on this, contacted Acura Emergency services and Roadside Assistance. No one has ever heard of this happening and have no idea of the cause. Acura Client Relations is closed on the weekends and has no hotline on the weekend for reporting safety issues. I can't even get any constructive feedback as to if the car is currently safe to drive without using the cruise control. I have scheduled an appointment with Acura of Fremont Service on Monday at 2:30PM PDT. This may be a flawed vehicle update that was pushed onto the vehicle while driving as I have run in car diagnostics and everything that should be normal in green seems to be. In my opinion this should be a high priority as it can lead to collisions.

Your family will love this car! In fact, if you were replacing your second car today, you'd end up with two identical cars in the driveway. You evaluated every competing 2-row luxury SUV and chose this one mainly because it: 1. Offers the best interior space and comfort relative to exterior dimensions (including ample rear headroom and legroom); 2. Has the best mix of sporty luxury; 3. Has the freshest design and technology; 4. Offers the most competitive pricing, even when fully loaded. You noted only a few things that you haven't read about much in other excellent, comprehensive reviews: window defrost takes forever, even after starting the car remotely; the rear seats allow little adjustment/recline; lane-keeping assist has so little reliability that it adds nothing to vehicle convenience or safety (but adaptive cruise control with low speed follow works great); even with 50/50 suburban/highway driving, your gas mileage won't budge from 18.2.

I've had my 2019 Acura RDX Advance for 5 years now and I wanted to share my thoughts on it. Before this, I owned a 2014 RDX and a 2010 TSX. I still love the handling, modern look (inside and out), and overall feel of the new RDX 3rd generation over the 2014 (2nd generation). However, I'm not a fan of the 4 cylinder turbo as it doesn't get any better mileage than the smooth performing 6 cylinder. Despite this, I'm happy to report that my earlier complaints about entering addresses into the navigation system are no longer an issue since the AcuraLink was updated. Now, I can enter locations from the app directly to the infotainment system while the RDX is off. I've done several at a time and all I need to do when I start the car is accept them and they are on the system for use later. The addresses for companies and other locations (besides personal locations) show up in full. Overall, the technology is amazing. Although there have been several over-the-air free updates since buying, they have not corrected all the quirks. The AcuraLink app has fewer quirks since the more recent updates and they added several features prior updates had removed, such as individual tire pressure and the ability to download directions from my living room through the AcuraLink app when the car was off. However, I still don't understand why a premium priced automobile did not come with a remote start key and requires a yearly subscription as the only way to remotely start it unless you pay nearly $500-$600 to the dealer to install a transponder. In my opinion, the standard key-fob should allow remote starts.

I've only had my 2019 Rdx Aspec for a week now. While there are a few things I'm not a fan of, overall I'm hopeful that these issues will subside within a few weeks. The body style is spot on, and I love the white & black color scheme. The interior is also fantastic, and the dual moon roof is a great touch. I do have some concerns about the road departure mitigation system and the automatic stop/start engine, but I'm optimistic that these features will work as intended. I also noticed some play in the steering when I had the lane keeping assist off, but I'm planning to reach out to the dealership to see if they can help. Despite these minor issues, I'm still happy with my purchase and I'm looking forward to enjoying my new car. By the way, we also have a 2018 Rdx tech pkg and I absolutely love that vehicle!

I recently traded in my 2012 RDX Tech, which was considered the loaded model, for the 2019 RDX Advance. I was hoping to get the ASPEC for the rims, but since the Advance was loaded like the ASPEC, I decided to go with the black Advance with black interior and upgraded to black rims. Let me tell you, it's a stunning car! The ride is smooth and comfortable, and it exceeded my expectations when I drove it out of state the second day I had it. The handling on sport or sport+ mode was nice and tight, and the seats are soft and supple. I especially loved the lane keep assist and cruise control features, which made driving a breeze. The panoramic sunroof is also a gorgeous addition. While the touch pad takes some getting used to, it gets easier with practice. However, there are a few cons to note. A small space for coins would be nice, and a bigger center console would be a great addition. Additionally, the navigation system could use an upgrade, as there were portions of not-so-new roads where I was 'flying in the gray' on the screen because those roads weren't recognized. Overall, I'm thrilled with my new car!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share some feedback on my SUV. Overall, I really love it! However, I have noticed a few things that I think need to be checked out. As I was reading through some posts, I saw that some people were experiencing turbo lag when accelerating from low speeds. I have noticed this too, and it can be a bit frustrating. Additionally, I've found that the gear shifts from 1, 2, and 3 can be quite abrupt, especially when stopping on a hill and then releasing the brake. Another issue I've noticed is that at certain speeds, the car seems to shake a bit, almost like the turbocharger is struggling. Finally, when I'm driving at high speeds and need to brake, the SUV shakes quite a bit. I'm not sure if it's the transmission downshifting or something else. Have you experienced any of these issues? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Looks like I’m not the only one who sensed rough transmission transition at low speed. I believe 2019 RDX has a serious transmission problem. I have a base model. The problem that I noticed is that when leaving my place in the morning with the temperature gauge stuck at the lowest position, the vehicle jerks when switching the gear to upper ones at low speed. As the temperature gauge bar appears as it’s warmed up, the abrupt transition of transmission becomes smoother. I tried warming up for 5 minutes before leaving and the problem was less severe. So this vehicle requires warming up as most of vehicles in 80s or 90s did. But remember you're buying a so-called luxury vehicle paying more than 40 grand in 2019. This is really hard to reproduce at dealer because by the time I arrive at dealer, the vehicle is already warmed up. People complained a lot about hard control of electronic system, but I don’t, it’s a matter of time to get used to it. Another issue is this 2019 RDX is gas greedy, usually I can get a little less than 23 mile/gallon but it requires 92 octane recommended. When I'm spending more money for high-end version and more gas with higher priced octane gas, at least I didn't expect rattling or jerking of rough transmission transition.

I really enjoy driving the RDX, but I want to make you aware of an issue that I have experienced twice in the 8 months that I have owned it. When accelerating hard, the engine may stall or lose power, which can be dangerous when driving on the interstate. Although Acura and the dealership have not acknowledged the issue, I hope it will be resolved soon. Additionally, while CarPlay is not perfect and sometimes disconnects within the first few minutes of use, it works well when it stays connected. Overall, I am happy with the RDX, despite its thirst for fuel. The push button shifter and touch pad are not a problem for me, but I do wish navigating CarPlay was easier.

I recently purchased the Acura RDX AWD Advanced Package after searching for a new vehicle for several months. I had been driving a 2012 BMW X3 that I had custom ordered and purchased in the fall of 2011. I was initially cautious about switching from a V6 to an inline 4 turbo, but I was pleasantly surprised by the power and performance of my new Acura. I particularly enjoy the HUD and the blind spot monitors, and the car itself is both luxurious and great to drive. However, I have experienced some issues with the infotainment system. Despite having paid 50k for the car, I have had trouble playing music without any issues. Although I initially thought that the problem was me and that I just needed to get used to the system, my 22 and 19-year-old children confirmed that it wasn't just me. The car has been serviced twice now, despite having only 819 miles on the clock. The screen sometimes goes blank, freezes, or won't play anything at all. Yesterday, I selected my country playlist, but the system played my disco playlist instead. If I receive a text message or phone call while driving, the entire system goes astray. Unfortunately, the CD player has been removed from this model, so playing a CD is not an option. I have to rely on a USB or my phone for my music. Despite these issues, I still believe that this is a great car, and I plan to drive it for a long time.

This car is packed with features that make it an affordable package, including keyless entry, lane keep assist, collision mitigation, adaptive radar cruise control, backup camera, 10-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, auto engine start/stop, remote start (via phone app or optional 2-way remote), active noise cancelling, 16-speaker ELS surround sound, climate control, and heated and cooled seats. However, some of these features may not work as expected. For example, the collision mitigation system only beeps and charges the brakes, but does not actually stop the car regardless of speed or distance setting. The lane keep assist only reliably works on straight roads with perfect lines, so it's important to pay attention when approaching an off-ramp. In addition, LKAS is only available at speeds of 45mph or above, so it shuts off if your speed drops below that. The backup camera could also be better, as it is very subject to raindrops on the lens. The remote start feature is available, but the climate control settings are disabled until you get in the car. The AcuraLink app works about 70% of the time, but during the other 30%, it may ask you to register your car again or be unavailable. Despite these issues, the car is still a great value and has a lot to offer.I haven't had any issues with the keyless entry so far. However, it's worth noting that you cannot roll the windows up from the keyfob like in almost every other late model car. On the bright side, you can roll them down with the keyfob, just not remotely roll them back up. The 10-speed transmission is next up on the quirky list. Since it's paired with a turbo VTEC 4, you may run into the occasional situation where the car shifts just as the torque band kicks in, leading to an uncomfortable jerky ride. In comfort mode, the car should really skip every other gear. The active noise cancellation is also another oddity. It's hard to tell if it's actually working because it's just not that quiet compared to say a Q5, Lexus NX-RX, or even a Ford Edge. Engine note aside, the car does little to shield you from the road noise. The ELS sound system is actually quite good, but the lack of insulation in the car noticeably hinders its performance. A little resonance control in the door panels would have gone a long way. The infotainment center is next on my critique list. I'm not going to pass judgment on the ergonomics as I knew the shortcomings prior to purchase. However, the lack of detailed control over the vehicle's many functions is almost disturbing to me. Just as with the Acura Link app, most of the functions of the infotainment system are relegated to either ON or OFF with little customization. So, why buy this car? In my opinion, buy it for its SH-AWD, which is amazing. Buy this car for its strong engine and expected Honda reliability. Buy the car for its roomy interior and looks. Whatever the reasoning may be, buying this car for the tech features should be last on the list. In that regard, there are much better offerings on the market today. Yes, most of the competition out there would charge more, but I would much rather pay for something that works instead of something that doesn't. This car is the epitome of smoke and mirrors. The new RDX is an affordable package that offers a wide range of features. While some features may not be noticeable to most buyers, it still functions as expected. However, it's worth noting that some of the competitor's vehicles may offer additional features that are worth considering.

I purchased my 2019 RDX in mid-June, but unfortunately, I noticed several flaws within the first few blocks of driving. These included a crazed front windshield, a steering wheel that was unraveling, flaws in the clearcoat on the hood, and a faulty rear hatch. Although the car seemed to be fixed after four weeks and a loaner for 13 days, I experienced issues with the computer screen displaying frequent messages of 'LOADING' or 'FUNCTION NOT AVAILABLE' with steering wheel controls. This made it difficult to access important information while driving. While the local dealer and corporate have informed me that an update is coming, nobody knows when it will be available. Unfortunately, I have been waiting for three months now. Additionally, my horn has stopped working and keeps blowing fuses, which has been a safety concern. The car has been in the shop for several days, and I am hesitant to drive too far from home for fear of experiencing further issues. Other problems include a cracked battery cable and a mysterious mug rolling around under the seat, which was not mine. The leather on most seats is also picked, which I have been told is normal, but it does not match the quality of other cars in the showroom. As a long-time Honda and Acura owner of 20 years, I am disappointed with the poor quality of this car and the poor attitude from corporate in trying to resolve these issues. UPDATE: After four months of filing Lemon Law Arbitration paperwork, my 2019 RDX has been deemed a lemon, and I am awaiting a buyback check. Although I have been shopping for a new car, nothing matches the great look, handling, and amenities of the RDX for the price. However, I cannot go back to Acura due to the poor treatment I received as a loyal customer. During the hearing, everything was blamed on me, which was very disheartening.I sometimes worry that I might use the horn too much or for too long, but even if I did, it's not a big deal! I also find it frustrating when the collision mitigation engages on an empty road, causing the screen to blink because I'm using my main headlights during the day. It seems a bit unnecessary, doesn't it? Unfortunately, my cruise control stopped working, but it wasn't because I used it in the rain - I even have videos of it malfunctioning on a sunny day! While I wait for a settlement, I still have to drive the car, but it's a shame that no dealer will see me to reset my flashing screen. Despite these issues, I still love my RDX - strangers even stop me to ask about it! However, I did have some trouble with Honda America during the buyback process, which took nearly a year to complete. Despite this, I'm now happily driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee, which has proven to be much more efficient and dependable than the 2019 RDX.
