2020 Acura Rdx problems

acura logo

The Acura RDX is a compact luxury crossover SUV produced by Acura, a luxury vehicle division of Honda, as the second crossover SUV offering from the brand after the mid-size MDX. Since it was introduced, it shared its platform with the Honda Civic and CR-V.

First generation (TB1/2; 2007)

Originally previewed as the Acura RD-X concept car, the production RDX had its debut at the 2006 New York Auto Show and went on sale on August 11, 2006. A facelifted 2010 model went on sale in August 2009, which featured the addition Acura's "power plenum" grille and a front-wheel drive option.

Engine

The first-generation RDX is powered by a 2.3-litre straight-4 turbocharged gasoline engine, rated at 240 bhp (179 kW; 243 PS) at 6,000 rpm with a torque peak of 260 ft⋅lbf (350 N⋅m) at 4,500 rpm. At the time, this was uncommon among Honda vehicles.

The K23A1 engine has all-aluminum construction, an i-VTEC head, and dual balance shafts. It was also one of the only four-cylinder powered luxury SUVs of its generation. Honda's variable flow turbocharger reduces turbo lag by using a valve to narrow the exhaust passage at low rpm, increasing the velocity of the exhaust flow and keeping the turbine spinning rapidly. At higher rpm, the valve opens to allow more exhaust flow for increased boost. The engine also features a top-mounted intercooler which receives air from the grille, channeled by ducting under the hood.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimated fuel mileage is 19 mpg‑US (12 L/100 km; 23 mpg‑imp) city and 23 mpg‑US (10 L/100 km; 28 mpg‑imp) highway miles per gallon. An updated EPA mileage estimate in February 2007 rated the RDX at 17 mpg‑US (14 L/100 km; 20 mpg‑imp) city and 22 mpg‑US (11 L/100 km; 26 mpg‑imp) highway.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-29
  • VIN: 5J8TC1H7XLL
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: My wife weighs about 125 pounds. When she sits in the front passenger seat of this car, often (but not always) an indicator will light up on the dashboard, saying "Passenger Air Bag OFF." Even if she shifts around in the seat or bounces up and down, the indicator light will stay on. I have taken the car to my local Acura dealer twice, asking that this problem be diagnosed and fixed. The first time their service technician reported "No issues at this time. Unable to duplicate concern at this time." The second time (today), the technician reported that he had "checked system for codes, no codes in system. Light will go on and off if passenger moves around in seat." I remain quite concerned that this un-repaired problem is a significant safety issue, as the indicator light appears to be saying that the airbag won't deploy in a collision.

Negative 2020 Acura Rdx car reviews

  1. Jaeden Wunsch 2024-11-29

As a long-time Honda and Acura owner spanning over three decades, I recently purchased (not leased) an RDX Tech three weeks ago. Unfortunately, I have already had to return to the dealer due to some known and unresolved issues with the vehicle. Prior to this, we had three GM SUVs, all of which were problem-free. However, I must say that the RDX falls short in terms of luxury and economy, and the build quality is subpar. The road noise, tire roar, and suspension noise are even louder than my pick-up truck. Additionally, the RDX only gets 17.7 MPG in mixed driving. It seems that the RDX is a prime example of the trade-offs that come with SUVs/CUVs. Despite the positive reviews from many professionals, Acura has missed the mark with this one. We made our purchase based on our familiarity with the Honda/Acura brand and reviews, but after driving 1000 miles, it is clear that Acura has failed to deliver on their brand proposition. There are much better options available at or below the price of these vehicles.

  2. Conrad Schaefer 2024-11-25

After purchasing a brand new Acura and experiencing multiple issues, I was extremely disappointed with the way Honda/Acura handled the situation. Despite bringing the car in four times, they refused to fix anything, claiming they couldn't replicate the problem. It was frustrating to have to spend so much time waiting in the service center, driving a loaner, and making phone calls. This has been the worst car buying experience I have ever had. I would advise caution when considering the Honda company.

  3. Josiah Kovacek 2024-10-28

We have a 2020 RDX and have had dash rattles from the onset. The dealer said push cardboard in the gaps to quiet them! I also think the blind spot warning should be in side mirror not on hard to notice part of door. We also had tech option series and still don’t have fog lights. Think twice before buying this much better out there with more intuitive controls.

  4. Riley Sipes 2024-09-22

The car has some great features such as its looks, SH-AWD, and engine. The body is also very solid with no creaks. However, there are some downsides to it. The stereo sounds okay, the infotainment system is not up to par, and the leather feels cheap and does not wear well. The noise insulation needs a lot of work and the transmission is slow for up/down shifts. The shift paddles are more like toys than tools. The safety tech, including the lane keep assist, is not very useful in practice. At the end of the day, it can only be classified as a luxury vehicle if you are upgrading from something like a CRV, RAV4, or lesser. If you own a Lexus RDX, BMW X series, Mercedes GLE, or Infinity QX series, moving to this car would be a noticeable step down. I have had dozens of cars, and I have to say, this is probably the only one that I really don't like driving. It's disappointing really as I expected better from Acura. Update: Finally turned it in after lease expiration and must say it’s one of the happiest days of my life. After having to pay for 2 brake flushes that the check engine light said I needed, navigation CPU having to be replaced, and entire gas tank having to be replaced due to a bad valve that prevented refills, I’m done with this vehicle.

  5. Al Morar 2024-08-21

I have been a loyal Acura/Honda customer for 30 years, but unfortunately, my recent experiences have not been up to par. The 2015 TLX I purchased had some defects, and the 2016 RDX I received as a replacement had some issues with the throttle and other electronics. Currently, I am driving a 2020 RDX, which has also had some electronic issues. However, I believe that if the excessive technology was removed, it would be a great vehicle. Despite these issues, I am committed to my 4-year lease. I also own a 2006 CRV with 250,000 kilometers, which has only required routine maintenance. In the future, I may consider purchasing a Lexus.

I can't express how much I love the new RDX! It drives beautifully, is incredibly comfortable, and for an SUV, it's turbocharged and very responsive. Plus, it's loaded with tech features. I couldn't be happier!

Learning all the controls may take some time, but with a little training, they become easier to operate. However, the owners manual is quite lengthy at over 600 pages. The gps/nav system with the touch pad/voice control is not my favorite, as I prefer a touch screen or manual selection by city/state. The older selection method was much easier. When finding new names/addresses for destinations, the 2014 model had more flexibility compared to this one.

  3. Antwan Rau 2024-09-05

This car is full of luxury and technology. The exterior has a sleek and classy shape. The engine has a lot of pep, being a four-cylinder turbo, but it won't win a Nascar race! The ride is smooth and very comfortable. It's a real winner!

  4. Nicholas Pacocha 2024-08-08

Fantastic all-around car! It checks all the boxes for cheaper than the competitors. I absolutely love the car and my wife does too. I would buy it again in a second. After 3 years, we still absolutely love the car and would recommend it to anyone.

I recently purchased a 2020 Acura RDX from Flow Acura in Wilmington NC and I couldn't be happier! The vehicle is stunning both inside and out, with a beautiful glass ceiling that really catches the eye. The technology is impressive and user-friendly, with voice commands that respond quickly and accurately. The seats are heated and exceptionally comfortable, and the spacious and beautiful interior makes for a truly enjoyable ride. It's amazing how this SUV drives like a sports car, making it really fun to drive. Overall, I am extremely satisfied with my purchase and would definitely buy it again without hesitation!
