Common 1997 Saturn Sc1 problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the 1997 Saturn SC1, several common problems have been reported:
- Lack of Warning Indicator for Low Oil: Owners have highlighted the absence of a warning indicator to show when the oil is low and needs to be added. This lack of warning can result in unexpected engine failure while driving, potentially causing accidents.
- Engine Seizure: There have been instances where the engine has seized while driving, even after regular oil changes and maintenance. This sudden engine failure can be dangerous, especially when driving at higher speeds.
- Head Cracking in Single Cam Engines: Single cam engines in these Saturn models have been reported to have issues with head cracking, which can lead to significant engine problems and the need for costly repairs.
- Motor and Tranny Mount Wear: Owners have experienced issues with motor and transmission mounts wearing out around 150,000 miles. Replacing these mounts is crucial to minimize further problems with the vehicle.
- Fuel Filter Replacement: The fuel filter, located along the driver side front fender, may need replacement after some time. This maintenance task is essential to ensure proper fuel delivery and engine performance.
- Idle Pulley Bearing Failure: Some owners have faced problems with idle pulley bearings failing around the 200,000-mile mark. Replacing the pulley and belt is necessary to prevent further damage to the engine.
- Hard Shift Transmission: A common issue reported is a hard shift transmission, often attributed to a faulty valve body on top of the transmission. Repairing this requires expertise due to the complexity of the components involved.
- Valve Cover Gasket Leakage: The valve cover gasket has been identified as a common gasket to fail, leading to oil leaks. Replacing this gasket is essential to prevent oil seepage and maintain engine performance.
These reported problems highlight the importance of regular maintenance and prompt attention to any signs of issues to ensure the longevity and reliability of the 1997 Saturn SC1.

- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: WE BOUGHT A USED SATURN 2 YEARS AGO FROM A DEALERSHIP. SINCE THE DAY WE GOT THE CAR HOME WE HAD TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS. MAINLY WHEN MY WIFE WOULD DRIVE IT TO GET OUR SMALL CHILDREN TO DAY CARE, AND SHE WOULD GO TO WORK. WHEN THE TRANSMISSION WARMED UP IT GAVE HER A HARD TIME GETTING IT INTO GEAR. COUNTLESS TIMES OF SITTING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE INTERSECTION WAITING TO TURN THE LIGHT TURNED RED AND THE OPPOSITE TRAFFIC GOT GREEN AND STARTED HEADING TOWARD HER HONKING, SHE WAS FRANTICLY TRYING TO GET THE CAR INTO GEAR. THEN SHE WOULD HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO HAVE TO INJURE HER HAND TO SLAM IT INTO GEAR TO GET OUT OF THE WAY AS MY LITTLE ONES WERE CRYING IN THE BACK AND SHE WAS SHAKING AND UPSET. WE HAVE HAD VEHICLE IN REPAIR SHOPS COUNTLESS OF TIMES COMPLAINING OF IT, BUT THE EXTENDED WARRANTY REFUSED TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM BECAUSE IT WAS STILL DRIVABLE, ACCORDING TO THEM. NOW AS MY WIFE DROVE OUR KIDS TO THE BABY SITTERS SO SHE COULD GO TO WORK THE TRANSMISSION SNAPPED. ABOUT 1 WEEK AGO FOUND OUT THE EXTENDED WARRANTY EXPIRED, AND THEY REFUSED TO HELP. THEY SAID WE SHOULD HAVE FILED A REPORT OF THE PROBLEM BEFORE IT EXPIRED,. WE EXPLAINED THAT WE DID SO MANY TIMES AND THEY WERE DENIED. WE HAVE PROOF FROM DEALERSHIPS, BUT THEY REFUSED TO LET US FAX THE PROOF. *AK

- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: I BOUGHT MY SATURN IN MAY OF 1999, AT 20,000 MILES. IT WAS PREVIOUSLY A LEASE VEHICLE. AT 73,000 MILES, THE ENGINE STARTED TO BURN OVER 2.5 QUARTS OF OIL EVERY 3000 MILES. THE CAR WAS UNDER WARRANTY AND THE ENGINE WAS REBUILT. AT APPROXIMATELY 150,000 MILES THE ENGINE STARTED BURNING AGAIN. I HAVE TO HAVE MY OIL CHANGED EVERY 1500 TO 2000 MILES NOW. I HAVE BEEN TOLD, BY MULTIPLE MECHANICS, THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE SATURN SC2S. I'VE ALSO HAD THE IGNITION REPLACED. I STARTED HAVING PROBLEMS WITH STARTING IT UP AT ABOUT 45,000 MILES. EVERY TIME I STARTED IT UP, IT WOULD TAKE A WHILE TO TURN OVER, UNTIL ONE MORNING WHEN I TRIED TO GO TO WORK, IT WOULDN'T START UP AT ALL. I HAVE ALSO BEEN THROUGH 3 ALTERNATORS AND THREE BATTERIES. I HAVE TAKEN GOOD CARE OF MY CAR AND HAVE NEVER HAD THESE PROBLEMS WITH CARS I HAVE HAD PRIOR, THAT HAVE BEEN TWICE AS OLD, AND ALMOST DOUBLE THE MILEAGE. OF COURSE, THOSE CARS WERE NOT GM PRODUCTS. I THINK I WILL GO BACK TO MY PERVIOUS BRAND.*AK
