2009 Volvo Xc70 problems
The Volvo V70 is an executive car manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars from 1996 to 2016 across three generations. The name V70 combines the letter V, standing for versatility, and 70, denoting relative platform size (i.e., a V70 is larger than a V40, but smaller than a V90).
The first generation (1996–2000) debuted in November 1996. It was based on the P80 platform and was available with front and all-wheel drive (AWD), the latter marketed as the V70 AWD. In September 1997, a crossover version called the V70 XC or V70 Cross Country was introduced. The sedan model was called Volvo S70.
The second generation (2000–2007) debuted in spring 2000. It was based on the P2 platform and, as with its predecessor, was also offered as an all-wheel drive variant marketed as the V70 AWD and as a crossover version initially called V70 XC. For the 2003 model year, the crossover was renamed to XC70. The sedan model was called Volvo S60.
The third generation (2007–2016) debuted in February 2007. It was based on the P3 platform and marketed as the V70 and the XC70. Production of the V70 ended on 25 April 2016, the XC70 continued until 13 May 2016. The sedan model was called Volvo S80.

Common 2009 Volvo Xc70 problems
The Volvo XC70 2009 has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. Here are some of the issues in detail:
- Ignition Lock Malfunction: Some owners have reported issues with the ignition lock getting stuck, making it impossible to start the car. In some cases, a replacement from Volvo did not work due to a programming issue. However, a YouTube video can help resolve the problem.
- Front Wheel Bearing Noise: The front wheel bearings may begin to make noise, indicating wear. This issue was unexpected for the owner, as their older XC70s with higher mileage did not have similar problems. Replacing the wheel bearings and lower control arms/ball joints can address this issue.
- Windshield Leak: The windshield in P3 Volvo models, including the XC70, is prone to leaking. This can lead to water flooding the car's rear driver well and leaking into the rear-view mirror housing, affecting critical electronics. If the car being considered does not have this problem, it should not be a concern.
- Transmission Issues: Transmission problems have been reported, with the transmission not shifting properly. This issue can be resolved by repairing or replacing the transmission, although the frequency of this problem is not specified.
- ABS Control Module Failure: The ABS control module may fail, which can affect the car's braking system. Replacing the ABS control module can address this issue, but the frequency of this problem is not specified.
- Front Control Arm Bushings Wear: The front control arm bushings may wear out, leading to a less responsive and uncomfortable ride. Replacing the worn-out bushings can improve the car's handling and ride quality, but the frequency of this problem is not specified.
- Slipping and Hard Shifts: The transmission may slip or experience hard shifts, indicating a problem with the transmission or its control system. Repairing or replacing the transmission can address this issue, but the frequency of this problem is not specified.
These problems are not exhaustive, and other issues may arise in individual vehicles. It is essential to thoroughly inspect any used car, including the Volvo XC70 2009, before purchasing to ensure its overall condition and address any potential problems.

I'm glad to hear that you've had an excellent experience with this vehicle! It sounds like it handles snow like a champ, even better than the Subaru all-wheel drive system. While it may be slightly underpowered off the line, it has plenty of torque to pass on tough Colorado mountain passes at 55 miles per hour and above. The interior design and quality are excellent, and the seats are everything you expect from a Volvo. It's great to hear that they wholeheartedly live up to their expectation. The only issues you've experienced have been a few rattles and squeaks, as well as a defective speaker, but it's great that the dealer was able to solve those problems for you.

The vehicle is incredibly comfortable to drive. The leather seats with the seat warmers are fantastic, and there's plenty of legroom. I absolutely love driving my car!

The 2008 XC70 is a significant upgrade from the 2005 model in terms of comfort, ride, and interior. Despite the heavier weight and engine, the superior ride and feel of the car make it a worthwhile trade-off. While the gas mileage and handling may be slower, the T6 models are much more spry. The only downside is the lack of heated front seats, which were present in the older model. It is worth noting that the car has been reliable, with only minor issues such as a cracked engine mount and a faulty fuel sensor, which were promptly fixed. Overall, the XC70 is a solid choice and I am considering the 2016 XC70 or V90 wagon for my next Volvo.
-
This is my fourth XC70! I currently own one in the US and lease another in Europe. I have previously owned a 1999 (which had problems) and a 2001 XC70 which I picked up in Sweden on Volvo's Tourist program. Contrary to the other review here, I am delighted with my new XC70. It is a solid, comfortable ride. I did change the tires from the Continentals it came with to Bridgestones. It's a great addition to the lineup. Although, I do wish it had the Four C suspension. Unfortunately, I got misled by the dealer about that.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with our 2002 XC70. It has been the least troublesome car we've ever owned, which is saying a lot considering the issues we've had with other brands. When it came time to get another car, my wife insisted on getting another XC and I couldn't be happier with her choice. I was initially worried about the fuel mileage, but was pleasantly surprised to find that we were getting 25.4 mpg during normal cruising speeds of 72 mph. And let me tell you, the T6 is a powerhouse! My wife is already looking for Mustangs to race against. I'll be sure to update you as we put more miles on it. So far, we've driven 400 miles and it's been a joy.

I leased a Volvo for 2 years and 12K miles with the promise of a 6-month extension. However, at the end of the lease, Volvo and the dealer refused to honor the original agreement. They offered a $29K buyout, which I believe is too high. Unfortunately, this experience has left me disillusioned with Volvo. In the past, I owned a 2000 V70XC-SE and a prior 240 DL. Both vehicles experienced major system failures after 90K miles, and the cost of repairs was exorbitant. The 2008 model I leased had disappointing performance and mileage, and the BLIS and ultrasonic sensors did not work in the rain or snow. Additionally, any load in the rear caused the springs to bottom out. I recommend checking the cost of Xenon headlight replacement before making a purchase.
Lewis Kreiger 2024-10-02
Hey there! I've been driving this car for almost 3 months now and I have to say, there are some features that I absolutely love, like the PCC and BLIS, among other gadgets. However, I have noticed that the mileage isn't great and it would be great if they could do something about it, or even bring in a diesel model. Comparatively, the BMW 5 series does offer better mileage. While the performance is just okay, I have noticed that at high RPM, the car can be a bit noisy and the reaction time when pressing the gas is a bit slow. However, once you're cruising on the highway, everything goes smoothly and the car handles pretty well. Overall, it's been a good experience so far!

I have had the pleasure of owning three Volvo's over the last 10 years, always leasing them for 4 years and then getting another one. Unfortunately, my experience with this 2008 XC70 has not been as positive. On the day I received it, one of the radiators sprung a leak and I was forced to get it serviced on a Saturday. Additionally, the sales rep did not include an owner's manual or the Volvo hotline. Since then, I have had to replace the floating panel and the windows do not go up and down properly. When I took the car in at 82,000Km to get the last warranty work done (I was late by 2K), I was informed that it had to be under 80,000KM. Despite my 10-year history with the company, I was not granted any reverse loyalty. I am looking forward to the end of my lease in Jul12.
Delmer Sipes 2024-09-18
I've had this car for 14 months and unfortunately, I cannot wait for my lease to be up. It seems that Volvo still has some work to do before everything comes together in this car. Every week, I encounter electronic issues, alert messages, rattles, and transmission jumps from one gear to another for no reason. Additionally, when driving in the mountains, the car can be unpredictable. According to the dealer, these issues are normal for this model, but Volvo is working to improve it. Unfortunately, the resale value and reliability are not great. I recommend checking Consumer Reports and the ratings from the editors at Edmunds before making a decision. I hope that Volvo will address these issues soon, as it is surprising to see such a decline in quality from their past models.
Unique Bechtelar 2024-05-12
I enjoyed driving the car, but unfortunately it had several issues and even Volvo was unable to fix it, resulting in a refund after 15 months. Despite the problems, I still appreciated the experience of driving it.
