2010 Volvo Xc70 problems

volvo logo

The Volvo V70 is an executive car manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars from 1996 to 2016 across three generations. The name V70 combines the letter V, standing for versatility, and 70, denoting relative platform size (i.e., a V70 is larger than a V40, but smaller than a V90).

The first generation (1996–2000) debuted in November 1996. It was based on the P80 platform and was available with front and all-wheel drive (AWD), the latter marketed as the V70 AWD. In September 1997, a crossover version called the V70 XC or V70 Cross Country was introduced. The sedan model was called Volvo S70.

The second generation (2000–2007) debuted in spring 2000. It was based on the P2 platform and, as with its predecessor, was also offered as an all-wheel drive variant marketed as the V70 AWD and as a crossover version initially called V70 XC. For the 2003 model year, the crossover was renamed to XC70. The sedan model was called Volvo S60.

The third generation (2007–2016) debuted in February 2007. It was based on the P3 platform and marketed as the V70 and the XC70. Production of the V70 ended on 25 April 2016, the XC70 continued until 13 May 2016. The sedan model was called Volvo S80.

Common 2010 Volvo Xc70 problems

The 2010 Volvo XC70 is known for several common problems that owners have reported over the years. These issues range from automatic transmission slips and hard shifts to knocking or squealing noises from control arm bushings.

One of the most prevalent issues with the 2010 Volvo XC70 is the automatic transmission slipping and shifting hard between gears. This problem occurs due to erroneous software, a bad valve body, or faulty shift solenoids. The transmission may shift harshly when it gets too hot, and in some cases, it may slip between gears, making driving dangerous. Some owners have had to replace or rebuild the entire transmission to resolve this issue, which can be quite costly.

Another common problem with the 2010 Volvo XC70 is knocking or squealing noises from control arm bushings. Control arm bushings protect the suspension parts from friction and heat. However, some drivers have reported that their front control arm bushings became worn out earlier than expected. When the unprotected metal of the control arms comes into contact with other metal parts, they produce knocking or squeaking sounds. The worn bushings can also throw the wheels out of alignment, leading to problems like uneven wear on the tires. Replacing the worn bushings usually gets rid of the noise.

In addition to these problems, some drivers have reported transmission shifting problems with the 2010 Volvo XC70. The transmission may take too long to shift between gears, shift or downshift harder than normal, or stop working altogether. This problem has been reported for other model years of the Volvo XC70, including the 2003-2008 and 2012 models.

It is important to note that while these issues are common, not all 2010 Volvo XC70s will experience them. However, potential buyers should be aware of these problems and consider them when purchasing a used XC70. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent these issues from occurring or detect them early on, potentially saving owners from costly repairs.

SEAT BELTS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-15
  • VIN: YV4992BZ4A1
  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: On two P3 Volvo cars I have owned now, the front passenger and driver side seatbelt release button sometimes does not release the seatbelt, this happens almost daily and requires the button to be forcibly pressed to release, more commonly on the passenger side. Additionally, on two separate occasions, the passenger side seatbelt has slotted into the latch but was loose when tugged on, not being able to support any tension. This happened on both cars that I owned and with different passengers, where we would arrive at our destination and then they would go to press the button and the seatbelt simply disconnected. On my newer P3 car, (With the VIN here) I replaced the seatbelt catch device on the passenger side believing this was an issue with just the car, but the new replacement also had this issue. This is a serious safety issue as it prevents passengers from exiting the vehicle during an emergency and also may give a false sense of safety with the belt being latched, when really the slightest tug releases it.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-10-01
  • VIN: YV4960BZ4A1
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: The windscreen seal has failed. Water leaking into the overhead lighting fixture and main cabin. This will ruin the car, and shouldn't happen to any car. The windscreen, when properly attached to the body, contributes to the structural integrity and crashworthiness of the vehicle. If the screen is only partly bonded, any stress could detach it and the upper part of the body would suffer reduced strength integrity. I can push the windscreen out with my hand.

  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: The contact owns a 2010 Volvo XC70. The contact stated that the rear differential was making an abnormal sound. The bearings were spalling metal into the gears. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact called the local dealer however, the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified however, no further assistance was provided. The approximate failure mileage was 95,000.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-11-11
  • VIN: YV4992BZ3A1
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: I would appreciate your deepest consideration for assistance with the problematic rear differential on the 2010 XC70 Volvo. I have spent considerable funds to maintain my vehicle at top working order through maintenance at Volvo. I have always asked the Volvo advisors for service recommendations on the vehicle to keep my car running economically to ensure main components did not fail due to lack of maintenance. Therefore, when I learned that my rear differential is failing and there is no recommended service on that particular part which can be seen on the Maintenance Service manual below, there seems to be a lack of knowledge shared on this part. Unfortunately, I just started to look into this matter once my rear differential starting to fail, this knowledge was not shared to me during regular periodic maintenance, my Volvo Service advisors never recommended changing the rear differential oil. Moreover, it is a known defect for Volvo cars built throughout the years of 2008-2014. Volvo and Land Rover use the same part and there are many examples of this happening to Volvo owners around the mid-90K mile range. The cost is extremely expensive at an estimated $5,580.00. Please look in to this matter, this should be a national recall for this vehicle!

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-09-15
  • VIN: YV4960BZ4A1
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: OUR CAR HAS ABOUT 93,000 MILES ON IT. BEGINNING AT 60,000 MILES, THE CAR BEGAN TO USE AN EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OF OIL. THE LOW OIL INDICATOR COMES ON AND WE NEED TO ADD ONE OR MORE QUARTS OF OIL AT EACH 3,000 TO 3,500 MILES. THE CAR DEALER TELLS US IT IS "NORMAL" FOR SOME CARS TO USE THIS AMOUNT OF OIL AND THE PROBLEM HAS NOT BEEN RESOLVED. I NOTICED A RECALL NOTICETSB #TJ30021 COVERED SOME 2011 VOLVO XC 70S FOR OIL LOSS. WHY DOES IT NOT COVER THE 2010 CARS? THIS IS A CONTINUING PROBLEM WITH MY CAR. HAVE THERE BEEN OTHER COMPLAINTS SIMILAR TO MINE? I HAVE RECORDS FOR MY OIL CHANGES FROM THE CAR DEALERSHIP.

EQUIPMENT PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-03-01
  • VIN: YV4960BZ2A1
  • Components: EQUIPMENT
  • Summary: SAFETY ISSUE THE TIRE PRESSURE LABEL ON OUR XC70 (VIN: [XXX]) LIST THE PROPER TIRE PRESSURE AS BEING 33 PSI. AT THIS PRESSURE THE TIRE PRESSURE WARNING LIGHT IS CONSTANTLY ON. THIS RENDERS THE FEDERAL MANDATED TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM ESSENTIALLY NON-FUNCTIONING AND PLACES THE DRIVER AT RISK. VOLVO OF NORTH AMERICA HAS REVIEWED THIS ISSUE AND HAS CONFIRMED THE 33 PSI VALUE, NOT THE HIGHER VALUE IN THE OWNERS MANUAL, IS CORRECT. VOLVO HAS CONFIRMED THEIR RECALL TO REPLACE THE INCORRECT 33 PSI LABELS ON THE 08-10 XC70 DOES NOT APPLY TO THIS VEHICLE. SINCE PROPER TIRE PRESSURE AND THE TIRE MONITORING SYSTEM IS AN IMPORTANT ELEMENT IN SAFE DRIVING, VOLVO NEED TO RESOLVE THIS ISSUE. WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-02-25
  • VIN: YV4960BZ2A1
  • Components: WHEELS
  • Summary: THERE IS A VOLVO RECALL 226 (NHTSA CAMPAIGN #10V190000) TO REPLACE AN INCORRECT FMVSS LABEL THAT SHOWS TIRE PRESSURE OF 33 PSI AND TO REPLACE A PAGE IN THE OWNERS MANUAL THAT SHOWS THE PRESSURE SHOULD BE 35 PSI. THE CORRECT PRESSURE IS 36 PSI. THIS IS INFORMATION IS ALSO CONTAINED IN A LETTER FROM VOLVO TO NHTSA DATED 4 MAY 2010 (10V-190 3 PAGES). ACCORDING TO VOLVO, OUR XC70 (MFD 8/09) IS NOT PART OF THIS RECALL. HOWEVER, THE TIRE PRESSURE ON THE FMVSS LABEL AND LISTED IN THE OWNERS MANUAL MATCH THE INFORMATION IN THE RECALL. SINCE THE INFORMATION ON THE FMVSS LABEL DOES NOT MATCH WHAT IS LISTED IN THE OWNERS MANUAL FOR OUR XC70, VOLVO NEEDS TO 1) INCLUDE OUR XC70 IN THE RECALL OR; 2) ISSUE A NEW RECALL OR; 3) INFORM US HOW THE TWO DIFFERENT PRESSURES (ON THE FMVSS LABEL AND OWNERS MANUAL) ARE CORRECT. *JS

TIRES,WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-07-02
  • VIN: YV4992BZ4A1
  • Components: TIRES,WHEELS
  • Summary: I HAD JUST PICKED UP THE CAR FROM THE VOLVO DEALERSHIP WHERE THE CAR WAS THERE FOR TWO WEEKS. I STOPPED FOR GAS AND DID SOME SHOPPING AND AS I WAS ENTERING HIGHWAY THE 'TIRE PRESSURE LOW' WARNING LIGHT CAME ON. I THOUGHT IT WAS PROBABLY DUE TO WORK THAT WAS DONE IN THE SHOP. I ENTERED THE HIGHWAY AND AS I WAS SPEEDING UP, I NOTICED THE NOISE COMING FROM THE WHEELS, NOTICED THAT THERE WAS A FLAT. THE FLAT WAS DUE TO TPMS VALVE STEM FAILING AND AS I WAS TOLD LATER BY THE DEALERSHIP, THE LOSS OF AIR WAS VERY QUICK AND THE 13 MONTH OLD TIRE WAS DAMAGED AFTER ONLY DRIVING ON LOW PRESSURE FOR LESS THAN A MILE. AS I UNDERSTAND IT WOULD HAVE BEEN DANGEROUS IF IT HAPPENED WHILE DRIVING AT HIGH SPEEDS. AFTER I TOOK THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP, THEY REPLACED ALL TPMS SENSORS ON THE CAR DUE TO THE VOLVO TSB TJ-24767 DATED DEC 2011 TITLED 'TIRE MONITORING SYSTEM - TPMS SENSOR NUT CORROSION'. MY MAIN COMPLAINT IS THAT VOLVO KNEW ABOUT THIS ISSUE AND NEITHER THEY TRIED TO REPLACE THE TPMS SENSORS AT A FEW TIMES THE CAR WAS AT THEIR DEALERSHIP, NOR THEY TRIED TO EDUCATE THE CAR OWNERS ABOUT THE POSSIBLE RISKS. AS A RESULT, ONE OF THE TIRES WAS DAMAGED WHICH I HAVE BILLED TO PAY FOR. *TR

WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-05-17
  • VIN: YV4BZ982891
  • Components: WHEELS
  • Summary: DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE HIGHWAY THERE WAS A SUDDEN LOSS OF TIRE PRESSURE. THIS WAS CAUSED BY A FAILURE OF THE TIRE PRESSURE VALVE DUE TO CORROSION OF THE METAL. THE NEW VALVES ARE MADE OF PLASTIC. HOWEVER, THE ISSUE IS THAT ONE DOESN'T KNOW ABOUT THE PROBLEM UNTIL IT OCCURS. IF THE FRONT TIRE HAD LOSS PRESSURE THERE MAY HAVE BEEN A WORSE INCIDENT. THIS HAD PREVIOUSLY OCCURRED ABOUT 6 MONTHS EARLIER WITH ANOTHER TIRE. I STOPPED TO ADD AIR TO A TIRE AND DISCOVERED THAT THE VALVE WAS PUSHED INTO THE TIRE WHEN TRIED TO APPLY THE AIR HOSE. THE TIRE VALVE WAS REPLACED, BUT I DIDN'T THINK ANYTHING OF IT AT THE TIME. THIS TIME AROUND I HAD ALL OF THE ORIGINAL VALVES REPLACED, AND FOUND THAT THE DEALERS IN THE AREA ARE ALL OUT OF STOCK WITH THE VALVES, SO IT APPEARS TO BE A UNIVERSAL PROBLEM. I BELIEVE THAT THE ORIGINAL VALVE CAN BE CHARACTERIZED BY A DEFECTIVE DESIGN WITH RESPECT TO THE MATERIALS USED. AS A RESULT, I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE TWO DAMAGED TIRES, AS WELL AS FOUR TIRE PRESSURE VALVES DUE TO THIS ISSUE. MY SUGGESTION IS THAT THE ISSUE SHOULD BE QUICKLY INVESTIGATED FOR A POSSIBLE RECALL AND REPLACEMENT AT THE EXPENSE OF THE MANUFACTURER. THANK YOU. *TR

Negative 2010 Volvo Xc70 car reviews

  1. Trystan Blanda 2024-10-22

I purchased a new xc70 four days ago and was thoroughly impressed with its appearance and interior comfort. Unfortunately, a brake failure signal began blinking yesterday and instructed me to stop. I promptly pulled over, put the car in park, and turned it off. Despite the inconvenience, I remained confident that the issue would be resolved quickly. However, the dealer service was unable to fix the problem the following day and provided me with a loaner vehicle. They estimated that it may take a week or more to identify the root cause of the issue. While this news was disappointing, I trust that the dealership will resolve the issue and return my vehicle to me in perfect condition.

  2. Kadin Jenkins 2024-04-21

I have owned several Volvo cars in the past, but unfortunately, this one has been the worst with the most problems. Recently, the battery needed to be replaced at just under 50,000 miles. Currently, the car is at the dealer because it died in a parking lot and the AC and lights would not turn off. Additionally, I kept receiving all types of weird messages on the car. I called the dealer and they said they were not sure what was wrong and it may be the battery. If so, it means it only lasted 30,000 miles. I had to have the car towed and when I left the dealer, they could not tell me when it would be looked at. The lights were still on and the key was stuck in the car. I would bet money that if I drove past there today, the key would still be stuck and the lights, if any life left in the car, would still be on.

  3. Peter Kemmer 2024-03-12

I've had this car for 14 months and unfortunately, I cannot wait for my lease to be up. It seems that Volvo still has some work to do before everything comes together in this car. Every week, I encounter electronic issues, alert messages, rattles, and transmission jumps from one gear to another for no reason. Additionally, when driving in the mountains, the car can be unpredictable. According to the dealer, these issues are normal for this model, but Volvo is working to improve it. Unfortunately, the resale value and reliability are not great. I recommend checking Consumer Reports and the ratings from the editors at Edmunds before making a decision. I hope that Volvo will address these issues soon, as it is surprising to see such a decline in quality from their past models.

  4. Julio Lesch 2024-03-05

I have been following Edmunds for many years and have read numerous reviews. As a driver of several higher-end cars, I have had experience with Volvo's previous models. However, I have noticed a significant change in the newer models and would love to share my thoughts with the CEO. While the seating is great, I have found the new 6-cylinder engine to be too loud at cruising speed, sounding like a vacuum cleaner. Additionally, the transmission tends to jump when idle, and I have had to make several trips to the dealer for software upgrades. During one of these visits, the Volvo technician also experienced the car jumping forward without applying the gas. In comparison, my wife's 2008 five-cylinder model is much quieter. Furthermore, the gas mileage of the newer models is disappointing, averaging only 21 mpg on the highway. It is clear that this is not the Volvo of the past.

  5. Vern Lakin 2024-01-07

I recently purchased my second Volvo, with a BMW, Yukon, and Jaguar in between. While my wife has had three Volvos and is happy with them, I have had some issues with my XC70. Specifically, the transmission makes a slight jolt forward at low speeds when coming off a stop, even without pressing the gas pedal. Despite several attempts by the dealer to fix it through software updates and other means, the issue persists. I am wondering if the all-wheel drive is the cause of this problem. Has anyone else experienced this issue? I have been told that there are no tech bulletins on this problem.

Positive 2010 Volvo Xc70 car reviews

  1. Jerrod McLaughlin 2024-11-28

Hello! Thank you for sharing your experience with us. We recently purchased a demo T6 (4600 miles) to replace our trusty '98 XC (145,000 mi). After considering the Audi A6, BMW 530xi and Passat 4Motion, we ultimately decided to go with the Volvo due to its superior cargo size and utility, as well as our positive past experiences with the XC in snowy conditions. We frequently drive in the Colorado mountains during the winter, and the Volvo (equipped with snow tires) has proven to be unbeatable - it goes exactly where you want it to and stops on a dime, giving us a great deal of confidence in even the worst conditions. While I was initially concerned about the car's fuel efficiency based on reviews I had read, I'm happy to report that we're getting a solid 21 mpg in mixed driving (even with a cargo pod always on the roof), which is about the same as our smaller '98 XC. Thanks again for letting us share our thoughts with you!

  2. Ray Kemmer 2024-10-01

This is my fourth XC70! I currently own one in the US and lease another in Europe. I have previously owned a 1999 (which had problems) and a 2001 XC70 which I picked up in Sweden on Volvo's Tourist program. Contrary to the other review here, I am delighted with my new XC70. It is a solid, comfortable ride. I did change the tires from the Continentals it came with to Bridgestones. It's a great addition to the lineup. Although, I do wish it had the Four C suspension. Unfortunately, I got misled by the dealer about that.

I went from a 2004 v70 to the 09 xc70 and it surpasses it in every way. The car has plenty of kick if you have to speed up to merge and it drives as smooth as silk. It is also very comfortable. Although higher gas mileage would be great, it’s fine on the highway. The sound system is great too! As an audio engineer, I’m always happy bumping my music while floating up the roads. I hope you enjoy the ride!

Just about perfect in every way! It looks good, drives like a luxury car, has lots of power, is quiet, and is quite large. This is a well-thought-out vehicle.

This car is very comfortable to drive. It is solidly built and provides a quieter and more comfortable ride than the 2006 model that I really liked. Every time I drive it, I think to myself, 'this is a pleasure'.
