2004 Volvo Xc70 problems
The Volvo V70 is an executive car manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars from 1996 to 2016 across three generations. The name V70 combines the letter V, standing for versatility, and 70, denoting relative platform size (i.e., a V70 is larger than a V40, but smaller than a V90).
The first generation (1996–2000) debuted in November 1996. It was based on the P80 platform and was available with front and all-wheel drive (AWD), the latter marketed as the V70 AWD. In September 1997, a crossover version called the V70 XC or V70 Cross Country was introduced. The sedan model was called Volvo S70.
The second generation (2000–2007) debuted in spring 2000. It was based on the P2 platform and, as with its predecessor, was also offered as an all-wheel drive variant marketed as the V70 AWD and as a crossover version initially called V70 XC. For the 2003 model year, the crossover was renamed to XC70. The sedan model was called Volvo S60.
The third generation (2007–2016) debuted in February 2007. It was based on the P3 platform and marketed as the V70 and the XC70. Production of the V70 ended on 25 April 2016, the XC70 continued until 13 May 2016. The sedan model was called Volvo S80.

- Summary: I received a recall notice for the defective driver airbag. The nearest dealership is 10 hours away. I called Customer care and they said I would be responsible to transport my Volvo to the dealership in Billings Montana. The vehicle is a 2004 Volvo with 188k miles. Expense and travel is prohibitive to me. I am on a fixed income and I would worry about making a 20hr round trip in an older car. My desire is to gift this car to my granddaughter when she gets her driver's lic. I could not forgive myself if the driver's airbag deployed and the result could be serious injury or death. I contacted the Volvo Customer Care service and they said they could transport the car one way. can you help?

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-02-18
- VIN: YV1SZ59H341
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: ALTHOUGH THE 'CRACKED FUEL PUMP FLANGE' RECALL SERVICE (VOLVO RECALL R220, NHTSA 09V-483) WAS PREVIOUSLY PERFORMED ON MY VEHICLE, THE VOLVO XC70 HAS AN ADDITIONAL 'FUEL SENDING UNIT' ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE OF THE CAR. THIS ADDITIONAL FUEL COMPONENT HAS A SIMILARLY FORMED FLANGE WHICH ALSO DEVELOPS A CRACK. EVEN THOUGH THE UNITS ARE SIMILARLY COMPOSED AND BOTH IN THE SAME ENVIRONMENT, I HAVE BEEN TOLD THE AUXILIARY FUEL SENDING UNIT IS NOT COVERED UNDER VOLVO RECALL 220. EXACTLY AS DESCRIBED IN THE FUEL PUMP RECALL, THE CRACK IN THE DRIVER'S SIDE FUEL SENDING UNIT ALLOWS GASOLINE TO CONSTANTLY OOZE THROUGH THE CRACK AND SLOWLY POUR ONTO THE GROUND AND PUDDLE. IF A FUEL PUMP FLANGE CRACK ALLOWING GASOLINE TO POUR ONTO THE GROUND WAS CAUSE FOR A RECALL, WHY IS THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM IN THE AUXILIARY FUEL SENDING UNIT NOT ALSO A CAUSE FOR RECALL?

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-05-01
- VIN: YV1SZ59H741
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: THE FUEL PUMP BEGAN LEAKING FUEL IN HOT WEATHER. IT LEAKS BOTH IF THE CAR IS BEING DRIVEN OR IF IT'S STATIONARY. THERE IS AN EXISTING RECALL THAT SEEMS TO COVER THIS ISSUE. IT IS REFERRED TO AS "RECALL 220" IN VOLVO'S DOCUMENTATION. THE ORIGINAL RECALL LIMITS THE AFFECTED VEHICLES TO ONES WHICH WERE ORIGINALLY PURCHASED IN SPECIFIC U.S. STATES. THIS IS ODDLY ARBITRARY CONSIDERING CARS CAN BE MOVED AROUND AND WARM WEATHER ISN'T EXCLUSIVE TO ANY SPECIFIC LOCATION. I'VE ATTEMPTED TO CONTACT THE MANUFACTURER AND THE NHTSA BUT AM IMMEDIATELY SHUT DOWN DUE TO MY VIN NOT BEING LISTED IN THEIR DATABASE. VOLVO ISSUED DOCUMENTATION TO THEIR SERVICE LOCATIONS ON HOW TO VISUALLY INSPECT A VEHICLE TO DETERMINE IF IT'S AFFECTED. I PERFORMED THOSE STEPS AND BELIEVE MY VEHICLE FITS THE GUIDELINES FOR THE RECALL.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-05-09
- VIN: YV1SZ59H241
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: THIS COMPLAINT IS FOR A 2004 VOLVO XC70. THIS CAR HAS SOME SERIOUS PROBLEMS WITH ITS VARIOUS MODULES. WHEN DRIVING ON A BUSY INTERSTATE HIGHWAY, THE CAR JERKED AS IF THE TRANSMISSION WAS SLIPPING. AFTER THIS A WARNING LIGHT STATING "BRAKE FAILURE; PULL OVER SAFELY" ILLUMINATED. CAR WENT INTO LIMP MODE WHILE ON THE HIGHWAY IN FAST-MOVING TRAFFIC. GOT CAR TO A PARKING LOT AND WAITED ABOUT 30 MINUTES. CAR STARTED AND I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE IT HOME, ALTHOUGH BEING ABOUT 50 MILES AWAY. CAR WENT IN TO LIMP MORE AGAIN DURING DRIVE AND LOST ALL DASH INDICATORS, INCLUDING TURN SIGNALS, SPEEDOMETER AND ODOMETER. LIGHT FOR "CHECK ENGINE" WAS ILLUMINATED. AFTER MECHANIC RESET CODES, HE STATED THAT IT MIGHT BE THE ECM OR TCM. I SENT OFF THE ECM FOR DIAGNOSIS AND IT CAME BACK WITHOUT ANY ERRORS. I THEN SENT OFF THE TCM AND LEARNED THAT IT NEEDED REPAIR. AFTER RECEIVING THE REPAIRED TCM UNIT, WE RE-INSTALLED AND CAR DROVE FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS. I TOOK THE CAR FOR A 6-HOUR ROUND TRIP DRIVE THIS PAST WEEKEND AND HAD ONE INCIDENT OF THE JERKING, BUT WITHOUT ANY OTHER ISSUES. AFTER LETTING THE CAR SIT IN THE DRIVE FOR AROUND 20 MINUTES, I TRIED STARTING IT ONLY TO GET ANOTHER "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT AND INOPERABLE DASH INDICATORS (SPEEDOMETER, ODOMETER, TURN SIGNALS, ETC.). TOOK THE CAR TO A VOLVO DEALERSHIP TODAY FOR A DIAGNOSIS. THEY STATED THAT THERE WAS NO CONTACT OCCURRING WITH THEIR COMPUTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. THEY RECOMMENDED A REPLACEMENT OF THE CEM AS A FIRST STEP WITH NO GUARANTEE THAT THE PROBLEM RESIDES IN THE THAT MODULE. THAT PART INSTALLED IS OVER $1,100. THIS IS MY FIFTH VOLVO, AND UNDOUBTEDLY, THE WORST YET. I AM CONSIDERING JUNKING IT AND LEAVING VOLVO IN MY PROVERBIAL REAR VIEW. IT IS ASTOUNDING THAT VOLVO HAS NOT OFFERED A RECALL AS THIS IS CLEARLY A SAFETY HAZARD. PERHAPS IT TAKES PEOPLE DYING FOR CAR COMPANIES TO OWN UP TO FAULTY BUILDING.

THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 09V483000 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE) BECAUSE IT WAS REGISTERED IN THE PARTICIPATING STATES PER THE RECALL INFORMATION. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 150,000.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-12-05
- VIN: YV1SZ59H941
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: THE CAR LOCKS BY ITSELF AUTOMATICALLY WHEN KEY IS IN IGNITION AND YOU STEP AWAY FROM CAR LEAVING YOU LOCKED OUT. ACCORDING TO THE DEALER, THIS IS A "FEATURE" OF THIS CAR. AMONG ALL THE CARS I HAVE OWNED AND DRIVEN THIS IS THE ONLY THAT DOES THIS, VOLVO NEEDS TO CORRECT HIS ISSUE.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-10-27
- VIN: YV1SZ59H441

I REMOVED THE FUEL PUMP COVER IN THE FLOORBOARD, AND THERE IS A LEAK IN THE TOP OF THE FUEL PUMP, THAT DRIPS CONSTANTLY WHILE THE IGNITION IS ON. FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

- VIN: YV1SZ59H341
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: I HAVE A COPY OF RECALL 220NHTSA #09V483 FOR A 2004 VOLVO XC70. THE REASON BEING FUEL SMELL AND/OR FUEL SEEP PAGE. WE HAVE BEEN SMELLING FUEL FOR SEVERAL MONTHS AND ON 7/29/17 I NOTICED A COUPLE OF DROPS OF FUEL HIT THE PAVEMENT WHILE LOOKING AT THE CAR. I HAVE CALLED VOLVO TWICE CONCERNING THIS MATTER AND I HAVE ALSO CALLED NHTSA (REFERENCE NUMBER 1122416) AND HAVE BEEN ADVISED THAT MY VIN NUMBER DOES NOT MATCH THE RECALL, EVEN THOUGH IT'S THE SAME YEAR MAKE AND MODEL AND IS EXHIBITING THE VERY SAME SYMPTOMS INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. I'M EXTREMELY CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF MY VEHICLE I.E. FUEL IGNITION AND I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY I AM RESPONSIBLE TO PAY FOR THE NECESSARY REPAIR WHEN MY VEHICLE IS CLEARLY INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR HELP IN RECTIFYING THIS SAFETY ISSUE. THANK YOU, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).'*JB
SUSPENSION PROBLEM

- VIN: YV1SZ59H541
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: I WAS DEPARTING MY HOME VILLAGE ABOUT A BLOCK FROM MY HOME AND I HEARD A LOUD BANG IN THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE AT ABOUT 15 MPH!! NO BUMP.. NOTHING! I LOOKED UNDER THE CAR AND THERE WAS NO OBVIOUS ISSUE AT THE INITIAL LOOK AND I DROVE ANOTHER QUARTER MILE AND HEARD A SLIGHT GRIND OR NOISE ON SMALL BUMPS... THEN A CLANK. I BACKED UP AND THERE WAS A PIECE OF THE COIL SPRING ON THE ROAD!!!! THE FRONT LEFT - DRIVERS SIDE - COIL SPRING SNAPPED IN TWO. AT 101,000 MILES. THE CLEAN BREAK AND NO RUST OR UNUSUAL CORROSION INDICATES A FAULTY METAL. HOW CAN I TRUST THE VOLVO XC AGAIN!! SAFETY AND VOLVO ARE NO LONGER WORDS THAT SHOULD BE USED TOGETHER. MY COMPLAINTS TO VOLVO AMERICA WERE RESPONDED TO WITH NO CONSIDERATION TO THE MAGNITUDE OF THE ISSUE. VOLVO DID NOT STAND BEHIND THE OBVIOUS FLAW IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE VEHICLE. MANY OTHER COMPLAINTS ON NHTSA AND ONLINE FORUMS INDICATE A COMMON ISSUE WITH VOLVO XC SUSPENSION COIL SPRINGS. SO DANGEROUS!

Overall, this is a great vehicle. I recently switched from a Mercedes to a Volvo and I find it much more comfortable for my daily commute. It's also very practical for all my trips to Costco, the nursery, and the vet.
-
This car is amazing! It performs way better than it looks. If you hit the turbo, you'll leave most everyone else sitting at the stoplight. The build quality is very solid, and I haven't had any issues so far (at 30k miles). Maintenance hasn't been too bad because the major ones were covered under warranty, although they no longer offer that (which is a shame). I usually run synthetic oil in it.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to let you know that we recently traded in our BMW 528I with 127,000 miles on it. We were looking for a vehicle that could tow a trailer without being an SUV, and we think we found the perfect fit with the XC70. It's rated to tow up to 3500 lbs, which is more than we'll ever need. We've only had it for a couple of days, but we're feeling good about our decision to switch from BMW. Thanks for your time!

A good practical car with a much improved exterior design from earlier models. However, the lack of a standard transmission is a serious mistake. The geartronic works, but the lag in shifting and the difficulty in knowing what gear you are in can be disorienting and limit performance. Driving the car is very civilized and secure, but it suffers from a lack of feedback to the driver. It feels like a refined car being driven in accordance with your commands by someone else, rather than a sense of the car being an extension of oneself.

I recently purchased a 2004 XC70 with only 65,000 km from a Volvo dealership as a second car. At first, I was excited about the purchase, but unfortunately, I have experienced some issues with the transmission, ABS, Anti-Skid Control, Speed sensor, and ABS sensor. These problems have been quite expensive to fix and have even caused some scary moments, such as when the ABS engaged while I was driving through an intersection with my kids in the car. I did not receive a great trade-in value for my Honda, but I have learned that this car is essentially a computer on wheels, with the computer located in the engine compartment, which can cause overheating. Despite these issues, I still believe that this car has potential and I am hopeful that future models will address these concerns.

I used to own an Audi 200 quattro avant, which is very similar to this car on paper. However, in reality, there is no comparison. The older car outperforms this one in every way. The start is delayed, the handling is poor, and the brakes are lighter and less effective. Additionally, the controls feel cheap and are counterintuitive. The seat always moves away from the last driver when you get in, and the armrests are not well-designed. The car also has a tendency to blow light bulbs for no apparent reason. On the bright side, the gas mileage is decent. I have decided to switch back to a real European car and get rid of this Ford!

I recently bought a 2003 Volvo, but unfortunately, I experienced some issues with it within the first few months of ownership. The keyless entry, emissions light, and dome light were all problematic, and the final straw was an oil pan leak and engine trouble. Despite the high cost of $40K, the car did not meet my expectations. As a result, I decided to trade it in for a Honda, which I have always known to be a reliable choice.

Although there have been some issues with the drive train and the front passenger door, these problems have been addressed and resolved. The cruise control has also been fixed. While there may be some road noise and occasional clunking sounds, overall this XC70 is a reliable and high-quality vehicle that is worth the investment.
