2005 Volvo Xc70 problems
The Volvo V70 is an executive car manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars from 1996 to 2016 across three generations. The name V70 combines the letter V, standing for versatility, and 70, denoting relative platform size (i.e., a V70 is larger than a V40, but smaller than a V90).
The first generation (1996–2000) debuted in November 1996. It was based on the P80 platform and was available with front and all-wheel drive (AWD), the latter marketed as the V70 AWD. In September 1997, a crossover version called the V70 XC or V70 Cross Country was introduced. The sedan model was called Volvo S70.
The second generation (2000–2007) debuted in spring 2000. It was based on the P2 platform and, as with its predecessor, was also offered as an all-wheel drive variant marketed as the V70 AWD and as a crossover version initially called V70 XC. For the 2003 model year, the crossover was renamed to XC70. The sedan model was called Volvo S60.
The third generation (2007–2016) debuted in February 2007. It was based on the P3 platform and marketed as the V70 and the XC70. Production of the V70 ended on 25 April 2016, the XC70 continued until 13 May 2016. The sedan model was called Volvo S80.

Common 2005 Volvo Xc70 problems
The Volvo XC70 2005 is known for several common problems that owners have reported. Here are some of the most frequently mentioned issues:
- Weak transmissions: Some owners have reported weak transmissions in the 2005 XC70, particularly in the AWD models. The Aisin AW55 transmission was used in the 2005 model, and while it was generally reliable, there have been reports of issues with the AWD transmissions. The 2006 model may have had some upgrades or improvements, but it is unclear if this specifically addressed transmission issues.
- Fuel injector pipes: There was a recall in July 2004 due to concerns that the fuel injector pipes might not be fitted correctly, which could lead to fuel leaks and potential fire hazards.
- Overheating and engine fires: A recall was issued in December 2004 due to concerns about possible overheating, which could lead to engine bay fires. This issue was not specific to the XC70, but it affected some models in the Volvo lineup.
- Suspension and electrics: The V70, which the XC70 is based on, is reported to have below-average reliability, with the suspension and electrics being the main culprits for claims. The XC70 may share some of these reliability issues.
- Injector problems: Diesel models, in particular, may suffer from injector problems, which can lead to reduced performance, increased fuel consumption, and other issues.
- Immobiliser faults: Some owners have reported immobiliser faults that can flatten the battery, indicating potential issues with the vehicle's security system.
- Front suspension problems: The front suspension of the XC70 may also be a source of issues, with some owners reporting problems related to wear and tear or manufacturing defects.
These common problems with the Volvo XC70 2005 are based on reports from owners and may not represent all vehicles of this model. It is essential to thoroughly inspect any used vehicle before purchasing and consider having a pre-purchase inspection (PPI) performed by a qualified mechanic, especially when dealing with potential electrical or transmission issues.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-11-20
- VIN: YV1SZ592851
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT FLASHED WHILE DRIVING ON TUESDAY NOVEMBER 20TH AT ABOUT 4:45PM. I WAS NEAREST MY LOCAL MECHANIC SHOP (ELDORADO AUTOMOTIVE) AND THE TECH PLUGGED IN THE COMPUTER GADGET THAT READS WHAT IS HAPPENING AND TOLD ME A HOUSING UNDER THE HOOD NEEDED TO BE REMOVED TO INVESTIGATE FURTHER. I TOOK THE CAR IN THE NEXT MORNING AND FOUND OUT THE MY TIMING BELT WAS ABOUT 1/2 SHREDDED AND READY TO BREAK AT ANY MOMENT. I WAS TOLD I COULDN'T DRIVE IT AND THAT THE REPAIRS WOULD NOT BE COMPLETED UNTIL TUESDAY NOVEMBER 27 FOLLOWING THE THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY. I HAVE A 2005 WAGON AND THE TIMING BELT WAS REPLACED BY VOLVO AT 125K. THE CAR NOW HAS 165K MILES. I WAS VERY LUCKY THAT I DID NOT HAVE A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE AND A RUINED ENGINE. IT WAS JUST COINCIDENCE THAT THIS UNRELATED ISSUE REQUIRED A MORE THOROUGH INVESTIGATION OF THE HOUSING WHERE THE TIMING BELT IS. TIMING BELTS ARE NOT WARRANTIED BY THE VOLVO 2015 LIFETIME WARRANTY PLAN (NO SURPRISE THERE) BUT AN AVERAGE BELT LASTS UPWARDS OF 100K MILES AND IS RECOMMENDED TO BE REPLACED AT/NEAR THAT TIME. I HAVE ALL DOCUMENTS SHOWING WHEN THE BELT WAS REPLACED AND YET VOLVO IS NOT STANDING BEHIND THIS PRODUCT. I DON'T SEE ANY GREY AREA HERE. THIS COULD IN NO WAY BE SOMETHING THAT WAS DONE BY ME. IT LOOKS AS THOUGH THE LOCAL VOLVO DEALER EITHER DID NOT INSTALL THE BELT AT 125K OR IT WAS CLEARLY A FAULTY UNIT. I SUBMITTED A CLAIM TO VOLVO CORPORATE FOR REIMBURSEMENT AND WAS DENIED. I HAVE REQUESTED A WRITTEN ACCOUNTING OF WHY THE CLAIM WAS DENIED. I HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO SPEAK WITH ANYONE OTHER THAN A CUSTOMER SERVICE REP WHO HAS ZERO AUTHORITY TO DO ANYTHING. I HAVE ALSO REQUESTED NAMES OF THE PERSONS IN MANAGEMENT WHO MADE THE DECISION. FEELS LIKE A HUGE SAFETY RISK. THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR HELP.

ONE MONTH LATER 10/16/2017 ON THE HIGHWAY GOING 70MPH I SUDDENLY I FELT AN EXPLOSION/STRONG VIBRATION AND LOST CONTROL. THE ROAD WAS CLEAR I DID NOT HIT ANY DEBRIS THAT CAN AFFECT THE TIRES. I WAS LUCKY THERE WAS NO OTHER CARS AROUND ME, SO I COULD PULL ON THE SHOULDER SAFELY. THE POLICE OFFICER(COLLINS)CAR THAT STOPPED TO SEE IF I AM OK ,SAW THE TIRE AND TOLD ME IT WAS DEFECTIVE AND I WAS LUCKY TO BE ALIVE SINCE THE DEFECTIVE TIRE WAS ON THE BACK NOT ON THE FRONT AND TRAFFIC WAS LIGHT. I DISCOVERED THE SAME REAR TIRE I HAD PROBLEMS WITH BEFORE EXPLODED, LOST PART OF THE TREAD DUE TO THE BREAK OF INTERNAL STEEL BELT . I CHANGED THE TIRE WITH THE RESERVE AND I TOOK THE CAR AGAIN TO TIRE PLUS STORE FOR REPLACEMENT. THE TECHNICIAN RECOGNIZED THE TIRE IS DEFECTIVE BUT REFUSED TO REPLACED BECAUSE IT WAS NOT ON THE LAST RECALL FROM PRIMAEWELL .(17T-013) SO I HAD TO PAY OVER $190 FOR A NEW PAIR TIRE SINCE THE CAR IS AWD AND CANNOT HAVE DIFFERENT TIRE AND STORE DO NOT SELL ANYMORE THIS BRAND(WANDER WHY?) SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2011-12-14
- VIN: YV1SZ592051
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: THE CAR WAS PARKED OVER NIGHT AT HOME. WHEN REVERSING THE CAR OUT OF THE GARAGE THE FOLLOWING MORNING A GRINDING NOISE WAS HEARD FROM THE LEFT FRONT WHEEL. ON INSPECTION IT WAS APPARENT THAT THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE HELICAL SUSPENSION SPRING HAD FRACTURED IN THE FIRST NINE INCHES OF ITS LOWER ARC. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO THE GARAGE AND THEY INFORMED ME THAT THE SPRING WAS IN CONTACT WITH THE TIRE AND THE SPRING RECESS IN THE TOP OF THE WHEEL ARCH. ON INSPECTION IT WAS APPARENT THAT THE SPRING HAD SUDDENLY FAILED DUE TO METAL FATIGUE AND THAT THE FRACTURED SURFACES WERE PARTIALLY RUSTED. THE CAR WAS SERVICED TWO WEEKS PRIOR TO THIS FAILURE AND NO PROBLEMS IN THE FRONT SUSPENSION OR WHEEL ALIGNMENT WERE NOTICED. I HAVE RETAINED THE SPRING FOR INSPECTION AND NOTED THAT THE POWDER COATING ON THE LOWER PART OF THE SPRING WAS MISSING AND THAT THE SPRING'S BARE METAL SURFACE WAS CORRODED. IF THE SPRING HAD FAILED WHILE DRIVING AT SPEED THE BROKEN END WOULD HAVE CAUSED A TIRE FAILURE WITH ACCOMPANYING LOSS OF CONTROL WITH SERIOUS INJURIES TO PASSENGERS OR DRIVER.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2009-01-01
- VIN: YV1SZ592251
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: TRANSMISSION STARTED CLANKING ON THE GO AGAIN WHENEVER AFTER AN ABRUPT STOP. IT HAS PROBLEM SWITCHING IN THE LOW GEARS, BUT IS FINE ON THE HIGH GEARS WHEN IN HIGHWAY. IT HAS DIFFICULTY GOING BETWEEN DRIVE AND REVERSE ALSO. IT MAKES A LOUD NOISE AS IF A HAMMER HIT IT. THIS CAR WAS NEVER IN AN ACCIDENT. IT WAS REGULARLY SERVICED BY THE DEALER. BUT WHEN THIS PROBLEM WAS FIRST REPORTED TO THEM WHEN IT FIRST STARTED, THEY GAVE THE USUAL SUGGESTION LIKE THE SOFTWARE UPGRADE WHICH I DECLINED AFTER READING OTHER OWNERS' STORIES OF ITS INEFFECTIVENESS. THEY FURTHER REFUSED TO REBUILD THE TRANSMISSION BECAUSE THEY SAID THEY SIMPLY DO NOT DO THAT. AND WHEN QUESTION IF THE PROBLEM COULD BE FIXED IF REPLACING THE TRANSMISSION, THEY SAID THEY COULD NOT PROMISE THAT EITHER. THE CAR WAS THEN TAKEN TO A REPUTABLE LOCAL MECHANIC. HE REFUSED TO WORK ON THE CAR. A 2ND MECHANIC CHANGED THE TRANSMISSION FLUID BUT DID NOT REALLY SOLVE THE PROBLEM. THE VOLVO DEALER SHOULD HAVE CHANGED THE TRANSMISSION FLUID IF AND WHEN NEEDED DURING THE REGULAR MAINTENANCE SERVICES. BUT THEY NEVER DID BECAUSE IT WAS CHARACTERIZED AS UNNECESSARY. BASED ON ALL THESE FACTS, I HIGHLY SUSPECT THE TRANSMISSION ON THIS 2005 XC70 IS A FAULTY PIECE OF EQUIPMENT THAT FAILS PREMATURELY. *TR

Bought to replace a Range Rover, this vehicle has been superb. It has all the advantages of an SUV plus good handling, braking and reasonable mileage. I prefer it to the RR and my wife's Lexus.

Hi there! I noticed that you had some trouble with your 2001 v70, but I'm glad to hear that your 2005 xc 70 has been treating you well! It sounds like you've really made it your own with all the tweaks. I agree that all wheel drive is definitely the way to go for a steady and enjoyable ride. Thanks for sharing your experience!

This is my second Cross Country, and I must say the improvements are dramatic! The transmission shift smoothness, great radio controls and sound quality, and reduced turning radius are all welcome changes. What's more, the seat comfort remains unsurpassed. Even after a 10-12 hour non-stop trip, you arrive at your destination feeling refreshed. Don't be concerned about fuel consumption during the break-in period, as it improves significantly. During the first 1000 miles, the MPG was about 14/20 city/highway, but now, after 5000 miles, it's averaging 18/24 and still improving. It's a common Volvo characteristic to have an initial thirst followed by a major improvement in fuel consumption after break-in. Lastly, the build quality and fit/finish are excellent.

You made a great decision buying this car! It's been nine months since I bought it and I've already put 8,500 miles on it. I use it for my daily commute and have even taken it off-road and on sand dunes. It handles all environments really well and gets great mileage for such a versatile vehicle (averaging 21 mpg+). The driver and passenger seats are super comfortable for long trips and off-road adventures. So far, it's been very reliable and the dealer maintenance is top-notch. It's not a gas-guzzling SUV and it's much better than a station wagon. This cross-over vehicle truly is the best of several worlds. Plus, it's rated as a very safe vehicle in all types of collisions.

Your Volvo XC70 is a magnificent automobile. I'm glad to hear that your friends who have driven it are awed by its performance, comfort and stability. It's great to know that it's as at home on the range as it is in the city! In every way, this car is a pure joy!

I have experienced several issues with my 2005 XC70, which have caused me to be without a car more often than not. Despite being my third Volvo, it has unfortunately been the worst one so far. I have encountered a range of problems, from the driver door opening while driving to gas leakage due to a faulty gas line. Although I have faced challenges with the car, I remain confident in my ability to handle the situation. While it may seem like a difficult situation, I am determined to find a solution. Although I am unable to take advantage of the lemon law in PA, I am committed to finding a way to resolve the issue and ensure the safety of myself and my family. I remain optimistic that I will find a solution to this problem.

Great deal with end of year discounts! You'll love this nice wagon with only a few faults. I've been very happy with it in the last few months. I only had to go into the dealer for a loose suspension part and they even gave me a loaner. The Pirelli tires do tramline on concrete freeways, but unfortunately there's no real option to swap them out due to the odd size.

After years of driving SUVs, I decided to try the XC70. Considering I drive nearly 30k a year, reliability is a top priority for me. I have to say, I am somewhat disappointed so far. The car is only 2 years old and I have already had to replace the A/C unit and a rear wheel hub bearing, among other things.

Hi there! I noticed that my 2005 Volvo xc70 goes into limp mode when I start the car with the headlights off. However, when I turn on the headlights before starting the car, it runs smoothly. But when I turn the headlights to the next setting, it goes back into limp mode. Do you have any idea why this is happening? It's really frustrating because I can't drive it in the dark.

You'll love the huge trunk space and comfortable ride of this vehicle. While the fuel consumption is average at 11 li/100 Km, we're still working on resolving a vibration issue. Thank you for your patience!
