Negative 2002 Volkswagen Gti car reviews

Although I have had some challenges with this car, I have learned a lot about car maintenance and repair. I purchased it used in '05 with 18,000 miles on it for $18,500 and have invested over $9,000 in maintenance. Currently, it is not running due to a water leak through the ceiling. I have had to replace both axels, the clutch after about 2,000 miles of ownership, and have had suspension, turbo/exhaust, and ceiling leaks. I have replaced about 20 different hoses and gauges. It was on 2010's Consumer Reports worst car list. I had to replace the timing belt sooner than expected due to issues, and the Catalytic Converter was also replaced. Despite these challenges, I have gained valuable knowledge and experience in car maintenance and repair.

Positive 2002 Volkswagen Gti car reviews

I've owned my GTI since 2002 and I feel that, considering its performance, the maintenance and repairs have been reasonable and minimal. In Europe, the timing belt must be replaced either after 6 years or after reaching the required mileage (which I believe is 60,000). I read a complaint here from someone who had to replace their belt sooner, but the truth is in the details. I've had to replace a few batteries, a water pump, and a clutch (I was racing on the autobahn). However, water pumps are easily broken in any vehicle, and the clutch was my fault as I had tuned up my VW and would take off after some European idiot in their underpowered Audi, BMW, or Mercedes that came up and sat on my rear bumper. My motto was 'eat my dust'. Overall, it's a great car.

  2. Coleman Carroll 2025-03-01

I purchased my 2002 VW GTI 1.8L turbo used with 50,000 miles on it. It is an incredibly fast and nimble car that is an absolute joy to drive. With a new ECU chip, you can even increase the horsepower from 180 to 240. However, it is important to note that this car requires dedicated maintenance and can be costly to keep in top shape. While you may groan at the $1500 shop bill every 6 months, the feeling of rocketing out of the parking lot will make it all worth it. It's like having the best/worst girlfriend ever - she'll rock your world and drain your wallet at the same time, but you'll still have a smile on your face.

I really love my car! I traded in my old 98 Nissan Pathfinder for this one, and it fits my needs perfectly. I originally planned on buying the basic model with the cold weather package, but I ended up getting the Tiptronic and luxury package, and now I'm hooked on the sunroof! This car handles amazingly and has quick pickup- it's truly a pocket rocket! I test drove an Acura RSX with a manumatic transmission, but it was so boring compared to this car. This car is just so much fun to drive- it always puts me in a good mood! Although the cup holder is in a bit of a silly place (over the stereo), I forgive it because I love everything else about this car. Plus, I found a cupholder tray that fits in the armrest on the VW accessories website, which I promptly bought :-)

  4. Bertrand Ward 2025-02-07

I owned an Acura Integra LS 2dr 97 for 5 years and was looking to trade it in for a car with more horsepower and a manual transmission. Initially, I had my heart set on a Toyota Matrix XRS, but upon seeing it up close, I was disappointed. Thankfully, a friend recommended I try the VW 1.8T. The turbo is amazing and it comes with 180 horses stock! I highly recommend it to everyone!

  5. Clint Yost 2025-02-01

I had to go all the way to Vegas to get my 337 edition, but it was definitely worth it. The extra 30 hp makes a huge difference, and the six-speed manual is perfect. This car turns heads, and the 18-inch wheels and 40-series tires grip the road like crazy. It's a little rocket! I love everything about this car, especially the Recaro seats that hold you in place when cornering hard. If you have the chance to get your hands on one, I highly recommend it.
