Common 1991 Volkswagen Gti problems
Based on the information from various sources regarding common problems with the 1991 Volkswagen GTI, here is a detailed list of issues reported by owners:
- Timing Belt Replacement: It is crucial to ensure that the timing belt is replaced on schedule for the 8v and 16v engines. The 16v engines are interference engines, and failure to replace the timing belt can result in severe engine damage.
- Gearbox Issues: Owners have reported problems with the five-speed gearbox, particularly with a bad second gear synchro. Additionally, failing motor mounts and misadjusted linkage can cause grinding gears, affecting the smooth operation of the transmission.
- Electrical Problems: Common electrical issues include failing older components like window motors, blower motors, gauges, and relays. Problems can also arise from poor aftermarket audio and lighting installations, leading to electrical malfunctions in the vehicle.
- Interior Wear and Tear: While seat upholstery is durable, dashboards are prone to cracking, and carpets can wear out over time. Finding replacement parts for missing or damaged interior components can be challenging due to the limited availability of these parts in the market.
- Valuation and Affordability: Despite these issues, the 1985-1992 Volkswagen GTI models have seen an increase in value over the years, making them more attractive to collectors. However, they still remain relatively affordable compared to other European cars from the same era.
By addressing these common problems, potential buyers and current owners of the 1991 Volkswagen GTI can be better informed about the maintenance and potential issues associated with this iconic vehicle.

Hey there! I've had my car for a while now. When I bought it, it already had over 100,000 miles on it and still had the original motor and everything. Since then, I've only had to make minor repairs like replacing the clutch and starter, both of which were original.

I've been the proud owner of my '91 GTI for about ten months now. It's definitely one of the coolest cars on the road! It's so much fun to drive and it always turns heads. When you get behind the wheel, it feels like you're driving a 5-speed go-kart. The handling is excellent and the performance is just as good. However, it's important to keep in mind that Volkswagen cars can have their fair share of problems. They can be expensive to fix, so it's best to be prepared. Overall, this car is a blast to drive and I highly recommend it!

This is definitely the most enjoyable car I have ever driven! While I cannot speak to its reliability due to my various exploits, I can say that it has a close ratio transmission, so please be aware that you may need to turn 3900+ rpm at 80mph (which may impact fuel economy). However, this car was truly made for driving, with easy-to-read gauges and a comfortable driving position. The ride may be a bit harsh, but the handling is truly out of this world. This car loves to get up and go, and I still can't believe I have my driver's license!

The GTI 16V was a fantastic car that had everything I needed at the time. It had utility, great looks, impressive performance, and excellent gas mileage. However, as it aged, more and more things started falling apart, and maintenance was getting expensive compared to its competition. I had to sell it, but I was sad to see it go.
