2020 Honda Civic problems

honda logo

The Honda Civic (Japanese: ホンダ・シビック, Hepburn: Honda Shibikku) is a series of automobiles manufactured by Honda since 1972. As of 2023, the Civic is positioned between the Honda Fit/City and Honda Accord in Honda's global car line-up.

The first-generation Civic was introduced in July 1972 as a two-door fastback sedan, followed by a three-door hatchback that September. With a 1,169 cc transverse engine and front-wheel drive like the British Mini, the car provided good interior space despite overall small dimensions. Initially gaining a reputation for being fuel-efficient, reliable and environmentally friendly, later iterations have become known for performance and sportiness, especially the Civic Type R, Civic VTi, Civic GTi and Civic SiR/Si.

The Civic has been repeatedly rebadged for international markets, and served as the basis for the Honda CR-X, the Honda CR-X del Sol, the Concerto, the first generation Prelude, the Civic Shuttle (later to become the Orthia) and the CR-V (which, by extension, was used as the basis for the Honda FR-V).

The Civic is one of the all-time best-selling automobiles in the world, with over 27 million units sold since 1972 as of 2021.

Common 2020 Honda Civic problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the 2020 Honda Civic, several common problems have been reported:

  1. Electrical Issues: Some owners have described electrical niggles with the 2020 Honda Civic. It is advisable to check the electrics carefully when considering this vehicle. Additionally, issues with the paintwork and lights have also been a concern, so a thorough inspection of these areas is recommended.
  2. Braking System: Complaints about squealing brakes have been reported by some Civic owners. Honda is aware of this problem and is working on a fix. When test driving a Civic with noisy brakes, it's important to note that resolving this issue may not be straightforward.
  3. Bodywork Concerns: Checking the bodywork for dings from car parks or stone chips from motorway driving is essential. Inspecting the alloy wheels for signs of kerb damage is also recommended. Given that Civics are often used as family cars, the interior should be scrutinized for any damage caused by previous owners.
  4. Fuel Pump Module: Civics manufactured up until a certain date in 2019 may have issues with the fuel pump module. It is advisable to consult a Honda dealer to determine if the vehicle requires a new module to address this problem.
  5. Side Airbags: A small number of Civic models built within a specific timeframe might have side airbags that do not deploy as intended in a collision. Owners should contact their Honda dealer to ascertain if their vehicle is affected by this issue.
  6. Emissions Control Software: Some Civics produced up to a certain date in 2018 could have problems with the engine's emission control software. Owners should contact their dealer to determine if their vehicle requires an update to address this issue.

These common problems reported by owners of the 2020 Honda Civic highlight the importance of thorough inspections and proactive maintenance to address any potential issues that may arise with this model.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-14
  • VIN: 2HGFC2F88LH
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I am writing to formally express my concern regarding a malfunction with the fuel pump in my vehicle, 2020 Honda Civic. The fuel pump almost failed, leading to unknown issues with the vehicle's operation. I can provide access to the vehicle for inspection at your convenience. This malfunction almost put my safety and the safety of others at risk. The vehicle almost stalled unexpectedly while stationary, creating a hazardous situation. The issue has been confirmed by an independent service center, where they noted the possible fuel pump's failure as the primary cause of the problems I've experienced. The vehicle has not yet been inspected by the manufacturer but I am prepared to facilitate this immediately. Prior to the attempted failure, I noticed a few warning symptoms, including sporadic engine sputtering. These symptoms first occurred approximately yesterday October 14th, 2024 at 9:36am. I would appreciate your prompt attention to this matter and look forward to your response regarding the next steps to resolve this issue.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-12-15
  • VIN: 2HGFC1E5XLH
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: CMBS automatically and unexpectedly deploys for no reason: there is no car or obstacle in front of the car. This has happened multiple times. I have taken the car to the dealer twice with this complaint and they were unable to duplicate the issue, so I was told they couldn't find anything wrong. I now disable the system each and every time I start the car because if I don't, I foresee a circumstance when freeway driving that I would be severely rear-ended, causing me major injury, or even death.

ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-28
  • VIN: 2HGFC2F86LH
  • Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Once again while driving on the interstate at highway speed the car lost power and then died. At first it wouldn’t start and then finally did where it could be slowly driven to an exit for safety. I 100% think this vehicle needs included in the fuel pump recall! This is probably the 30th time it has done this. This is my 19 year old daughter’s car and it is very unsafe. We bought a Honda because we heard they are very good and safe and reliable cars. This hasn’t proven to be that! We can’t afford to just get another car or pay to have it fixed. I know there are many other Hondas with this recall in effect! Add this VIN number. I have reported this issue multiple times! Do better Honda and fix my daughters car before she gets in an accident that could injure or even kill her!

I am fixing it this week, with our savings. The steering sticks and then over corrects constantly. I am an UBER DRIVER, so driving others. Someone asked me if I was ok because they saw the jerking and was concerned. No warning lights. I searched Google and saw the beginning of a class action for the 2022 and 2023 civic. But not for 2020. We have to do something before I risk my and others lives. Another concern is that my wife and 2 daughters have 2020 Hondas as well. The cost is extremely high for cars that normally take 6 yrs to pay for. We are [XXX] and don't have an income that can easily afford this. POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-02
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 19XFC1F35LE
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I turn my car on To go to work realized I didn’t have my phone. Car was in park. I hadn’t touch the gearshift at all I get out of the car. Approximate 20 seconds after I walk away from the car, my home security camera shows the car creeping extremely slowly backwards up into my driveway going up across the crown of the road… across the street and falls into a 10 foot deep ditch. I am 100% certain that Car was in Park… There were no sounds when I open the door to alert me that it would be anything other than park.. The back up camera was not engaged, so it was definitely not in Reverse… When the tow truck pulled it out of the ditch, it was Still running It had stopped vertically before it hit the bottom of the ditch, and rear tire got stuck in muddy water…. There were no ruts from tire, spinning from the front end at all in the ditch or the grass above the ditch… There is a recall of some 2020 civics for brake failure, parking brake failure…. I strongly believe my car needs to be part of this recall, because obviously something is wrong… My road is 55 mph and a car had to stop to avoid hitting my car… I have video from my home camera That shows a clear delay between when I get out of my car and shut the door and the car starts crawling. I tested it after he pulled it out of the ditch just to see if I had it in reverse from the same exact spot wouldn’t move and it immediately moved so I’m certain something is wrong… Right now the body shop can’t even duplicated can’t even get it to get caught between Park and reverse. Please investigate And this could’ve easily been a fatality. I need to send more photos and videos, but it won’t allow me to do it but there’s definitely more for me to send If someone can give me an email

POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-07-01
  • VIN: 2HGFC1E58LH
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Clutch System/Transmission Failure 1st Occurrence: Driving on the highway one evening at 65 mph in July of 2021. The engine began revving and the clutch was no longer functional. The engine would rev and there was no ability for me to accelerate. The vehicle decelerated placing myself at risk of getting rear ended or side swiped by other vehicles on the highway until coming to an eventual stop on the side of the highway. The vehicle was no longer operational and was towed to the nearest Honda dealership which was John Eagle Honda. The inspection, service, and repair should be available for review at John Eagle Honda. 2nd Occurrence: May of 2023. As I was making a left turn, the clutch slipped significantly and the engine revved however, the clutch was still engaging but, acceleration was significantly hindered and increased the risk of getting into an accident as I was not able to pick up speed quick enough. The vehicle was serviced and repaired at David McDavid Honda of Irving in May of 2023. 3rd Occurrence: June of 2024. I was driving on the road when I noticed that the clutch was experiencing some slight slippage. Overall the vehicle was stable and it didn't cause much of an issue but, it was similar to what had happened previously. I still was not able to accelerate as I normally could. It still poses a risk of getting into an accident and hinders my ability to maneuver quickly if needed. The vehicle was service and repaired by David McDavid Honda. In either of these occurrences there was warning light indicators or other symptoms prior to the failures and slippage. John Eagle Honda of Dallas and David McDavid Honda of Irving are dealer centers. The vehicle was serviced by John Eagle 1 time and David McDavid Honda of Irving two times. In a span of 3 years. 3 clutch failures and the vehicle is under 43,000 miles. The dealers stated no recalls out on my vehicle and that everything is fine otherwise.

  • Summary: Gas door opens randomly and it’s happened more than a few times now which is becoming a safety hazard especially because I drive 80 miles daily for work. Also my automatic brake senor is a hazard because it’s going off when cars or objects are farther away; which leads to the 3rd issue with my seat belts which is either to tight on the chest area and possibly choking me when the car automatically brakes when objects aren’t near or in close distance to my car

ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-23
  • VIN: 2HGFC2F86LH
  • Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Today while driving at highway speeds of 75MPH my car once again lost power. The RPM’s go up and the speed keeps decreasing. I had to pull over on the interstate and shut my car off and turn it back on after awhile to get it to run again. I 100% feel that this issue is related to the fuel pump recall and this vehicle needs to be added to that list. It is a danger to be driving on the Interstate and lose power like that. One of these times someone is going to hit me on the side of the road. This is about the 20th time or more this has happened to me.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-19
  • VIN: SHHFK7H6XLU
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: On [XXX], 2023, my car's electrical system malfunctioned, leaving me unable to restart the vehicle after stopping. I had to call my car insurance for roadside assistance, and their representative jump-started the battery, suggesting I replace it. However, on [XXX], 2024, the same issue recurred, causing the car to stall unexpectedly and fail to start while I was out shopping with my wife and [XXX] daughter. Fortunately, I was driving on local roads; I shudder to think what might have happened if I had been on the freeway. Again, I had to rely on my insurance's roadside assistance for help. The safety of my family and me was jeopardized, especially since this is our only vehicle, which we frequently use to travel with my infant. These incidents are documented in two insurance claims. My car is among those recalled for fuel pump issues, but I haven't been able to schedule a repair with the dealer due to no available appointments. The online chat support also refused to book an appointment for the same reason. Additionally, my car has always adhered to Honda's regular maintenance schedule. From March 2024 to May 2024, the car's display screen, including the mileage indicator, intermittently malfunctioned while driving. On [XXX], 2024, when the car stalled, the screen also indicated a brake system error. Finally, I want to report another issue with this car: the cooling system is no longer providing cold air, resulting in the interior temperature being consistently higher than the outside temperature, especially during the recent hot summer days. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-02
  • VIN: 2HGFC1E56LH
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: The body control module is failing, read multiple posts online and Honda is not fixing it. My alarm goes off and I cannot turn it off, have to use my key. The vehicle powers up on its own into accessory mode when parked, vehicle off and no key fob in the car. This causes the alarm to activate, drains the battery and causes temporary safety features- collision warning, lane assist, cruise control etc to not work. As well as drains the battery. Honda has recalled this part on other models but not the 10th generation Civic.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-29
  • VIN: 2HGFC2F62LH
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: The contact owns a 2020 Honda Civic. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V064000 (Air Bags) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The contact was advised by the dealer and the manufacturer that the recall would only be completed if the SRS warning light illuminated with a code indicating a failure of the printed circuit board. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect.

Negative 2020 Honda Civic car reviews

  1. Robb Hessel 2024-06-20

My 2020 Civic is a joy to drive. It offers a smooth and quiet ride, even when driving over Colorado mountain passes. The gas mileage is excellent both around town and on the road. The car handles like a small sports car, which makes driving it a lot of fun. However, the carplay system is a downside. I have experienced some issues with it, such as it stopping working and needing to be rebooted, which can be inconvenient. One time, it even refused to acknowledge that I was plugged into the USB. Despite these issues, using the radio and Bluetooth system is okay, but at times it can be clumsy and time-consuming. It is surprising to me that Honda engineered such an amazing car for driving, which I would give a solid A, but such a poor infotainment system, which I would give a solid D. I have talked to the dealership a number of times, but unfortunately, they could not help me. I hope Honda takes these issues seriously and works to improve the carplay system in future models.

Last spring, I purchased a 2020 Civic Sport in Agean Blue for my long commute. My main concerns were fuel economy and reliability, and I was fortunate to find a marked-down ride in a nearby small town that wanted to get this unsold 2020 off the lot as the 21 models were already on display. I was pleasantly surprised to find remarkable interior room in the car, along with excellent options such as remote start, heated seats, power driver seat, sunroof, and dual-zone climate controls. The handling is awesome, with steering and braking like a Corvette, and the performance is adequate. However, passing on a two-lane road can be dangerous as the car is a little slow for top-end acceleration. Additionally, road noise is quite loud, and the sport rims are easy to damage as there is no side wall to rub against the curb, only your rims to scratch against the concrete. For some reason, the windows tend to fog up easily, although the defogger takes care of that quickly. I have never owned a car that would fog up even in the summertime in the morning as this one does. Unfortunately, I have some buyer's regret due to the poor performance, but overall, it's a great little car.

I love my SI! I switched over from a Jetta and I do not regret it. The radio and Apple car play are flawless, and the sport mode is insane. When I want that extra power, my SI really performs! You will not regret getting this car!

I recently switched from a Mini Cooper S to a Civic Touring Edition. While the Mini Cooper was enjoyable to drive, it was becoming too expensive to maintain. The Civic has many of the features I was looking for, and I'm pleased with my decision. Although I find the CVO transmission a bit sluggish, the paddle shifters are a lifesaver. Additionally, I'm getting an impressive 36-37 mpg on regular gas, compared to the Mini's 33 mpg on premium gas. While I did lose some power with the switch, I'm content knowing that Honda's reliability is back in my life.

It gets me from place to place, but the best part about the car is its features. I love the side camera on the right and how it comes with automatic start on the key. I also appreciate that it's a smaller car.
