Common 2014 Ford Flex problems

The 2014 Ford Flex has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. These issues primarily revolve around electrical problems, engine troubles, and interior/exterior accessory issues.

Electrical problems are the most prevalent issue with the 2014 Ford Flex, as reported by owners. These issues include the door light staying on when the car is shut, loss of power while driving, and the car not starting. These electrical problems can range from minor inconveniences to major, costly repairs.

Engine troubles are also a common problem with the 2014 Ford Flex. These issues include blown engines, engine failure, and the check engine light coming on. Engine troubles can be particularly problematic as they can lead to significant repair costs and inconvenience for drivers.

Interior/exterior accessory issues are the final set of problems reported by owners of the 2014 Ford Flex. These issues include air conditioning and heater troubles, stuck seat latches, and problems with the fuel delivery module. The fuel delivery module issue, in particular, can lead to fuel leaks and even fire hazards, making it a critical issue for drivers to be aware of.

It is important to note that while these problems have been reported by some owners, not all 2014 Ford Flex vehicles will experience these issues. However, potential buyers should be aware of these common problems and consider them when making a purchasing decision. If considering a used 2014 Ford Flex, it may be wise to have the vehicle inspected by a qualified mechanic to identify any potential issues before making a purchase.

  • Summary: Power Steering Assist Fault. We drove the vehicle from Detroit to the Florida Keys and back. We were on mountain roads and small bridges along the way. As we pulled into the driveway at home the Power Steering Assist Fault message dinged and displayed on the dashboard. The steering is locked straight forward, and the vehicle is stuck in the driveway until a tow truck can pull it out and deliver to a dealer for repairs. A recall exists for many other Flex and Ford vehicles with the same steering. This vehicle MUST be included for free repairs as well. My wife has had nightmares since the return of us jumping the Seven Mile Bridge or diving off a cliff in West Virginia and we would be dead along with the cousins riding with us and any other vehicle we hit with completely locked steering. We were exceedingly lucky this time. There can not be a next time.

Over time it becomes loose and the seat is moving more than an inch at the base. I’m having to tighten my seat every other day to ensure that my child’s seat is secure. I first complained to Graco in November and they wanted to send a replacement seat, but other complaints say even those have the same problem. I reached out to Graco again today stating I no longer want this seat.

BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-01-01
  • VIN: 2FMGK5C82EB
  • Components: BACK OVER PREVENTION
  • Summary: We own a 2014 Ford Flex, and have been experiencing persistent problems with its rear backup camera system. We have been having this problem for close to 3 yrs now. The camera works intermittently every now and then. Sometimes, we get a message “Rear view camera unavailable. Contact Dealership”. There are times when it works and suddenly turns off while backing up. On multiple occasions, this has led to several close calls and near accidents when backing out of parking spaces, especially around small kids in school parking lots when I go to drop off and pick up my own kids from school. I often have to park my car far away or wait until the parking lot is less crowded to back up my car to avoid any accidents. It poses a serious safety risk when reversing in parking lots and other confined spaces. I have been unable to rely on the camera's display and Ford Flex being a big car, it is very inconvenient and dangerous to the people around my car while backing up. We did take it to the dealership sometime about an year ago to get it fixed and were charged $200 to just take a look at it. And, the dealer came back to say that there was no problem with the software and said that it looked like a problem with the wiring and quoted us close to $1000 +. The rear backup camera is an integral safety feature, allowing drivers to have a clear view of what's behind them when reversing. What is particularly troubling is that Ford has issued recalls for similar issues in other Ford models, but the Ford Flex seems to be absent from the list. I have been hearing this issue with other Ford Flex owners in my neighborhood and online about the same issue with many Ford Flex owners as well. It seems unfair and unjust that owners of Ford Flex Flex vehicles are left to grapple with these dangerous problems without any resolution from the manufacturer.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-15
  • VIN: 2FMHK6C80EB
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: 2014 Ford Flex AWD with 122,032 miles. Tried to get on interstate and when I got to 55mph heard a loud bang and smoke rolling from underneath car. Pulled over to find that the front differential had blown it's seals and gear lube sprayed everywhere. Car has been gently driven 25,000 in last 4 years with only other issues. Rear Hatch drive motor. Blend door actuators and strut mounts. Which all happened at 110,254 miles. Great car but now $3100 for a major part defect that is from Ford itself. Maintenance schedule in owners manual says an I quote. "Do not add fluid or change no need to check guaranteed for life" why is it there is the same recall for it but my vin is not included. Makes no sense. Been regularly maintained even before intervals. No warning no sign. Just boom

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-10-01
  • VIN: 2FMHK6C85EB
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: Power steering intermittently stops working and the steering wheel becomes almost locked in place. This first occurred approximately 6-8 months ago, but has gotten more frequent in occurrence and longer in duration. I have seen multiple complaints about this issue, but so far, there is no active safety recall. My vehicle was manufactured in the Oakville Plant, which was part of the recall for a very similar problem with 2011-2012 Ford Flexes (see Safety Recall 15S18) and although my vehicle is a 2014, it seems to have very similar issues. No steering or warning lights come on, the wheel just becomes very slow, almost like it is full manual steering.

ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-03-02
  • VIN: 2FMHK6D81EB
  • Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Driving down road at 45MPH, vehicle lost power, motor quite running. Due to being on 4 lane divided road, and cars all around, I quickly hit my hazard lights, put it in neutral and coasted best I could and was able to turn on a side road to safety. This was very dangerous. Dash lights were on, no warning lights, messages before, during or after event. Tried restarting vehicle and it cranked away. Figured out had to repush the push start button to keep it from cranking away longer. Towed to local Ford dealer. They determined cause to be Fuel Pump Driver Module failed, (explains engine stop since there was no fuel supply, and needed replacement. In addition I had another issue, they found water pump was leaking out weep hole. I then discovered they built the water pump into the engine block, behind the timing chain. It takes 13 hours to replace, and if you don't replace, the water goes into the engine oil. Very bad design, knowing it would need to be replaced. Cost over $2500 and 1 week to change a water pump! Ridiculous. I know a class action lawsuit has been filed-while not a safety issue directly, I think many people will not change it (due to expense), and then the engine blows up while driving creating a safety hazard.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-02-17
  • VIN: 2FMGK5C84EB
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: We were experiencing an intermittent electrical issue where the vehicle would crank but not start every time. The vehicle was towed to the dealership on two separate occasions and the mechanic was unable to properly test the vehicle and/or recreate the problem. After some further research, I found a recall on slightly older VIN numbers for this model Flex. The recall for the Fuel Pump Control Module: Fuel system, gasoline: Delivery: Fuel pump Recall date 2016-08-24 Recall no. 16V621000 Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Ford Taurus, Ford Flex, Lincoln MKS and Lincoln MKT vehicles equipped with 3.5L GTDI Ecoboost engines and 2013-2015 Ford Taurus Police Interceptor vehicles. A component within the fuel pump electric module (PEM) may overheat causing a loss of electrical power to the fuel pump. Recall consequence: A loss of power to the fuel pump will cause the engine to stall or prevent the vehicle from starting, increasing the risk of a crash. Recall action: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the fuel PEM part number and replace the fuel PEM, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on December 1, 2016. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 16S31. In addition, I located a forum of owners who were experiencing the same issues. These individuals either replaced the component themselves or had the service performed by a mechanic. https://www.fordflex.net/forums/viewtopic.php?p=212782&sid=6b719ac74855e58a8f26cce53f76b60f#p212782 We are the single owners of this vehicle, and the miles are low at 38,036. I replaced the Fuel Pump Control Module GA8Z-9D370-A several days ago and it started immediately, without exception or issue. I saved the part in case the NHTSA needs it for any testing. I would urge the consideration of expanding the coverage of recalls to include more VINs since the risk for engine shutdown could cause a crash.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-01-23
  • VIN: 2FMHK6DT1EB
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: My vehicle steering system had a loss of communication/loss of power to the electrical power steering. It nearly resulted in a very bad accident at an elementary school drop-off. I recorded a video of what is happening after the fact for documentation. Basically, it sounds as though there is a known communication issue from the fully electric steering to the primary electrical system on the vehicle. It appears from my reading that this is a known problem. I would strongly consider this to be a recall issue as it could be catastrophic and potentially deadly.

2014 Ford Flex recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 4 recalls for different components of the 2014 Ford Flex.

2020-02-10
  • Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company
  • Components: SUSPENSION:REAR
  • Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2018 Lincoln MKT and Ford Flex and Taurus vehicles with the Police Interceptor or SHO Performance Pack. The rear suspension toe links may fracture due to stress on the rear suspension.
  • Consequence: A fractured rear toe link will cause a sudden change in vehicle handling and increase the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the rear suspension toe links, free of charge. Remedy parts are not currently available. Owners were notified about the recall on March 3, 2020. A second notice will be mailed when remedy parts become available, which is currently expected to be the end of September 2020. A component within the fuel pump electric module (PEM) may overheat causing a loss of electrical power to the fuel pump.
  • Consequence: A loss of power to the fuel pump will cause the engine to stall or prevent the vehicle from starting, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the fuel PEM part number and replace the fuel PEM, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on December 1, 2016. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 16S31.
2014-11-07
  • Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company
  • Components: SEATS
  • Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2014 Ford F-150 and Flex vehicles manufactured March 1, 2014, to May 31, 2014. The affected vehicles were manufactured with a reduced clearance between the seat frame and the seat track assembly. This can cause the Occupant Classification System (OCS) to inaccurately register passenger weight and improperly suppress the passenger front airbag when the passenger seat is occupied by an adult passenger. Thus, these vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."
  • Consequence: Improper suppression of the passenger airbag increases the risk of an injury to the seat occupant in the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the front passenger airbag.
  • Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will widen the gap between the seat frame and seat track assembly and recalibrate the seat OCS, free of charge. The recall began November 25, 2014. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 14C10.
2014-07-02
  • Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company
  • Components: POWER TRAIN:AXLE ASSEMBLY:AXLE SHAFT
  • Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2012-2014 Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX vehicles manufactured September 2, 2010, to November 30, 2013; 2013-2014 Ford Taurus and Lincoln MKS vehicles manufactured August 25, 2011, to November 30, 2013; and 2013-2014 Ford Flex and Lincoln MKT vehicles manufactured September 12, 2011, to November 30, 2013. In the affected vehicles, the halfshaft retention circlip may not have been properly installed, and as a result, the halfshaft may move outward and disengage from the linkshaft while driving and without prior warning.
  • Consequence: If the halfshaft and linkshaft become disengaged while driving, power will no longer be transmitted to the wheels, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash. Additionally, if the parking brake is not applied before exiting the vehicle, the vehicle may roll away despite the transmission being placed in 'Park', increasing the risk of injury to exiting occupants and bystanders.
  • Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the vehicles to make sure that the halfshaft is properly retained. If it is not, dealers will replace the linkshaft and also replace the halfshaft if it shows evidence of spline damage, free of charge. The recall began on August 4, 2014. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-800-392-3673. Ford's number for this recall is 14S10.

I bought my flex usec from Carmax. The styling is really nice, with a two-tone red and black roof. However, I'm not a fan of the interior, which is two-toned with dark grey leather and a light beige roof. My biggest complaint is the handling in the rain. Every time I run over a puddle, it feels like the water grabs my wheels and jerks the car, which can be scary. I was hoping that purchasing new tires would help, but unfortunately, it didn't. That's the main reason why I'm considering getting a different vehicle. Additionally, the maintenance costs are high and it's not very fuel-efficient. Despite these negatives, it's a pleasure to drive in dry conditions and there's plenty of room inside.

Although the car has not given us any mechanical problems, we have found it uncomfortable to drive on long trips due to leg and neck cramps. The touch screen can be distracting and the visibility is poor. Additionally, the electronic turn signal is not to our liking. We have also experienced issues with the low front bumper hitting curbs and cracking, which can be expensive to repair. Despite these challenges, we have owned the car for over seven years and have driven 120,000 miles. While we are ready to move on to a new vehicle, we appreciate the reliability it has provided us. Despite experiencing multiple issues with our car, we have been able to handle them with confidence. We recently had to replace a second wheel bearing and had an issue with the bolts holding the rear end, but we were able to address these problems effectively. Although we still owe 13 months of financing at $471.00 per month, we have been able to manage the average repair cost of $850 per year over the past five years. We are confident in our ability to continue maintaining this car until we are able to afford a new one.

Open Letter to FORD CEO. Dear Mr. Fields, I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to you today to bring to your attention an issue I have been experiencing with my leased 2014 Ford Flex SEL. As a first-time Ford customer, I was drawn to your company by the appealing designs of your vehicles. However, my experience with my car has been less than satisfactory. With less than 5000 miles on the car, it was involved in a rollaway accident while in park and unattended. Despite multiple attempts to get the attention of both Worthington Ford and Power Ford dealerships, it took over a year for an inspection to take place at WF. Unfortunately, I was not able to speak with the inspector to understand what tests were conducted and what findings were made. Instead, I received a form letter denying my claim without any explanation. Additionally, I have been dealing with two warning lights on my dash for the past year and a half. The yellow check engine light appeared when the fuel fill flap popped off my filler spout. Although the vehicle was serviced by PF at approximately 30k miles, they failed to make the repair and instead tried to sell me a set of tires. When I brought the car to WF for service at approximately 39k miles, I was charged $523.39 to replace the filler assembly. WF indicated that the warranty was no longer available for this part as the vehicle is above 36k miles, but it would have been covered under warranty if PF had performed the requested repair. I would appreciate your attention to these issues and any assistance you can provide in resolving them. Thank you for your time and consideration. Sincerely, [Your Name]The sensor for the driver's side door closing is malfunctioning, causing the 'open door' warning to flash and a tone to ring every time the vehicle comes to a stop. It seems to be a common issue with this vehicle, and unfortunately, it was not repaired during the 30k service as requested. Despite being a warranty item, I was informed that the $450 repair bill was my responsibility since I had exceeded 36k miles. When I reached out to Ford corporate customer service, my concerns were not addressed, and I was not offered any compensation for the out-of-pocket warranty repairs I had made. While I understand that the mileage was slightly over, it is disappointing that the company is unwilling to take responsibility for a known issue. I decided to turn in the vehicle early to avoid dealing with the issue any longer. Unfortunately, the closest dealer to my home, PF, refused to take the car since I didn't purchase it there. I made an appointment at the purchasing dealer, WF, and despite fighting through an hour of LA traffic to arrive on time, I was told that I had just missed the leasing manager and asked to make another appointment. I was frustrated and disappointed, but I left the keys with the receptionist and departed.

2021 UPDATE: Our Ford Flex has been a great ride even after 150,000 miles! We recently passed it on to our teenage daughter and it's one of the top 4 cars for new drivers according to her driving course. We've had a few repairs, including a leak in the fuel intake valve and a steering and air conditioning issue, but they were all fixed within 6 months for a total of about $1500, inclusive of standard maintenance. We still highly recommend this car! 2018 UPDATE: With 124,000 miles, our Ford Flex is still going strong! 2017 UPDATE: My husband now uses this car as his company car and we put a ton of miles on it in the last year. We recently travelled to Disney and discovered a dead battery one morning when trying to start up the car. We realized this was the original battery at well over 100k miles! We got a new battery, even though the mechanic said we could possibly clean it up from the corrosion and keep it going for awhile. Other than that, we have had no issues with this car. If you're looking for a spacious vehicle without the stigma of a minivan and without the gas guzzling of an SUV, the Ford Flex is the perfect option for you! We have three large dogs and two kids, so when we need to take the entire family, including our furry friends, on a long trip, we don't have many options. My husband, who is 6'7I really enjoyed both the minivan and the Flex. The minivan had a lot of space, but for an everyday car, the Flex is definitely the better option. It's comfortable to ride in and can fit up to 7 people, which is perfect for when the in-laws come to visit. Although it doesn't have as much interior space as the minivan, we were able to solve that problem by adding a roof rack and tow hitch. We were originally planning on trading in our current Flex for a new one with those options, but we found that adding a hitch from U-Haul was a much cheaper alternative. However, the placement of the hitch is too low and we often scrape it over humps when it's loaded. I would recommend getting a dealer-installed version that sits higher on the frame and cuts out part of the plastic bumper.

This is one of the best cars you can own! The driver's cockpit is amazing, providing a comfortable and commanding feel as you drive. You can choose between the basic PRNDL or the Sport Mode of shifting, which is an absolute blast! The car is not only beautiful, but it also handles superbly, making it a real head-turner. The sound system is great, with Sirius XM, CD and AM/FM, and the voice control system is very handy. Additionally, the Sync system for your mobile device is a great feature. This is definitely one of the most technically advanced vehicles you can own!
