mazda logo

The Mazda CX-9 is a mid-size crossover SUV manufactured by Mazda in Japan since 2006 through two generations With three-row seating, it was Mazda's largest passenger vehicle until the arrival of the CX-90.

Despite being built in Japan at Mazda's Ujina #1 plant in Hiroshima Prefecture, the CX-9 was never offered in the Japanese domestic market. The shorter and narrower Mazda CX-8 was offered in Japan instead.

First generation (TB; 2006)

The first generation CX-9 was originally fitted with a 3.5 L Ford V6 engine, but, in 2008, the engine was changed to a 3.7 L unit producing 204 kW (274 hp) and 366 N⋅m (270 lb⋅ft) of torque. The updated engine was introduced in June 2007 and it was now built by Mazda themselves. This engine was coupled with a six speed automatic transmission. The first generation is based on the Ford CD3 platform that is shared with many Ford and Mazda models; the Ford Edge is its close mechanical sibling. It was launched at the 2006 New York International Auto Show.

Standard safety equipment included blind spot monitoring, backup camera, electronic stability control, traction control, roll stability control, front side impact airbags, and three row side curtain airbags.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-14
  • VIN: JM3TCBDY3K0
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: 2019 CX-9 GT, 30K miles, in August found coolant leaking under the car. This was 5 months past the warranty (but only 30K miles!). After doing research online, I found this is a massively common issue with all engines from several years encompassing 2019, where the coolant leaks due to a cracked cylinder head. There is a TSB from Mazda, which requires replacement of the engine, once the crack is developed. I immediately called Mazda corporate on 8/15/2024 and opened the case with them. They said they can try to assist, but first I have to take the car to the dealer for diagnosis of the problem. Had to wait 2 weeks, then leave the car, they did a full inspection and confirmed cracked cylinder head. Dealer opened up claim with Mazda (which apparently is separate from the case I made when I called the corporate). I had to go back because Mazda warranty dept. was asking the dealer to prove the engine was overheating, which it hasn't yet, because I kept adding coolant, so the engine never overheated. But the dealer lowered the coolant and had the engine overheat a little bit just to generate the computer code the warranty dept was requiring. This itself was an unnecessary additional potentially damaging scenario, completely unnecessary when the crack in the cylinder head was already found, and the coolant leak is clearly present. After all this, Mazda lowered their original quote from $10K to $6K and expect me to pay this to replace the engine. I called the corporate (customer relations) many times, but they said if the warranty dept. decided this, they cannot change it. And there's no way to talk to warranty dept. directly (not customer facing). We purchased a brand new factory assembled car for well over $40K. Due to a very common, Mazda acknowledged, engine manufacturing defect, the major component of the vehicle, its engine, requires replacement at only 30K miles! This is NOT a reasonable expectancy when purchasing any vehicle.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-09
  • VIN: JM3TCBCYXK0
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: My 2019 Mazda CX9 when you turn the steering wheel it makes a clicking noise. I brought car to a mechanic and was told there is a loose bolt in steering column. Mazda has a TSB bulletin on this issue TSB# 06-001/24 dated 01/23/2024. When I brought car to Palisades Mazda two other customers on line with me have the same issue. I looked on internet and found alot of people are having the same issue. Mazda is aware of this problem and it is a defect. Mazda is fixing this problem for cars under warranty but charging customers past warranty to replace the complete steering column to fix a loose bolt,

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-26
  • VIN: JM3TCACYXK0
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: I have a coolant leak that I have not been able to locate. Despite replacing the radiator, the leak persists. When I contacted the dealer to inquire about estimates for changing the water pump and timing chain, they advised that it would be more cost-effective to replace the entire engine, which would require removing the existing engine at a starting cost of $5,000, with a new engine costing approximately $6,000. They suggested that if I'm already experiencing issues, it might be better to either replace the engine or consider selling the vehicle and purchasing a new one. This response implies that the dealer might be aware of a larger underlying issue and prefers not to address it directly. Experiencing a coolant leak while on the freeway can lead to serious consequences. It can cause the engine to overheat, potentially resulting in significant engine damage and a complete breakdown. This not only poses a safety risk to the driver and passengers but also to other motorists due to the possibility of losing control of the vehicle.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-04
  • VIN: JM3TCBDY1K0
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: In June of 2022, Mazda issued a TSB for an engine flaw that cause coolant to leak in to the engine and significant overheating occurred. This overheating causes the head to warp. The TSB states that the only repair for this is a newer model engine. This happened to my Mazda CX9 and quite a few more. There are class action suits currently ongoing. Mazda never made its owners aware of the TSB. The car can shut down on the highway which is dangerous to all.

SEATS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-08
  • VIN: JM3TCBDY6K0
  • Components: SEATS
  • Summary: My car has a 60/40 split adjustable-type second-row seat and the driver side of the 60/40 split-bench second row seat has been sliding forward during braking despite being seemingly locked in place. Apparently, a similar issue was the subject of a safety recall for 2020/2021 Mazda CX-9s (5221I). I have spoken with Mazda and they are not offering to replace the seat as part of the recall since my car is a 2019. While I understand their position, the issue appears to be the exact same one described in the recall of the 2020/2021 models.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-28
  • VIN: JM3TCBDY5K0
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I entered my vehicle one day to find what looked to be cracks in the top left hand corner of my center display infotainment screen. However, they appeared to be internal and could not be felt. After doing some research, I came across Service Alert SA-008/18 from Mazda which covered this issue on 2016-2018 CX-9s, among other models. I also found a memo dated May 6, 2020, which detailed an extension of warranty service for these internal display cracks. I took my vehicle to my Mazda dealership who inspected the vehicle and told me they would be filing a claim with Mazda for the repair of the screen since there wasn't a current recall for this issue on my vehicle. Mazda agreed to partially cover the replacement with me being responsible for a $543 copay. I have spoken to Mazda Corporate about this resolution being unacceptable. This issue is a known manufacturing defect on earlier models of the CX-9, and it is obviously still an issue on the 2019 models. I explained to them that this was in no way a fault of my own and I feel that the screen should be replaced at no charge to me, which was the procedure for those affected by this issue with 2016-2018 models. As of right now, the cracks only affect the top left corner of my screen but I have read of many instances where vehicle owners had the cracks continue to spread, which I feel is very distracting to the driver. I strongly feel that Mazda should be performing a goodwill replacement in full for this issue at no cost to me as the consumer, and I am very disappointed that so far they are unwilling to do so.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-06
  • VIN: JM3TCACY4K0
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: On the last week of May, my car started experiencing sputtering and stalling out problems. I made an appointment at Mazda dealership for june 6th.meantime my husband checked all fluids and coolant was low so we topped up. Car was being driven very limited due to safety concerns. Then While driving on the freeway my car displayed a “excessive engine temperature, engine output will be limited” immediately my car reduced speed from about 65mph to under 15 mph while having my whole family including myself and 4 children in the car. We almost got hit by several cars while trying to get over to the shoulder. Once pulled over to the shoulder my husband came and followed me home on the back streets. Once again checked fluids and coolant again was back low this time empty. So In a day it completely had no coolant left. When taken into Mazda dealership for the appointment, customer service was so horrible I ended up leaving and taking my car to a 3rd party service center. Was advised to have a Hydrocarbon test on cooling system that measured at zero, then advised to take it for a diagnostic due to the sputtering, stalling and coolant leak, where they ultimately determined the coolant was leaking into combustion chamber &/or intake system. Pressure test shows drop in pressure, no visible external leaks present. TSB# 01-002/23 pertaining to cylinder head assembly replacement. Now I’m waiting for my appointment at a different Mazda dealership on June 12th! Please help

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-10-28
  • VIN: JM3TCBCY8K0
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: The engine developed a sudden coolant leak on the rear of the engine. A warning comes up stating that the car could overheat and lose power. After a few minutes and no sign of the car overheating, the car loses power and slows down on its own. The car has not yet been seen by the dealer or a repair shop due to no appointments available. Mazda USA has issued a TSB stating the issue with the engine and they state that a design flaw causes the cylinder head to crack because of the external forces from the exhaust system over bumps. The failure appeared all of a sudden with no warning lights or indications, it just started leaking a small amount of coolant one day. Now I'm waiting for Mazda USA to tell us how they are going to remedy this issue and provide assistance. According to their TSB this affects three different vehicle models with the same 2.5L turbo engine built from 2016 to 2020.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-05-22
  • VIN: JM3TCBEY9K0
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: My 2019 Mazda CX-9 Signature has developed a coolant leak at the back side of the engine that is consistent with Mazda TSB 01-013/21. Coolant leaks down onto the oil filter and the exhaust where it's burned off. Currently, I can drive the vehicle, but I need to refill the radiator and coolant reservoir. I'm concerned about this developing into a catastrophic leak that could seize the engine or cause a fire from contact with the exhaust. This vehicle is still under the warranty period of 5 years/60K miles. I will initially contact the dealer regarding this issue.

Negative 2019 Mazda Cx-9 car reviews

  1. Mervin Lind 2025-07-18

I loved everything about this car and was all set to buy one after a successful test drive. However, upon further consideration, I realized that the knee obstruction from the center console and the narrow seat back would be uncomfortable for me during long drives. It's disappointing because I had really fallen in love with the car.

  2. Bradley Schultz 2025-05-18

We recently upgraded from a CX-5 and were considering a few options, including the Acura RDX and Volvo XC60, before deciding on the CX-9. Ultimately, the decision came down to price and Mazda had some great incentives that made it the best choice for us. We felt that the RDX and XC60 didn't offer enough of an upgrade to justify the extra cost. While I personally tend to be frugal, even if money wasn't a factor, I would still choose the CX-9. It's a great driver's car that handles turns well and never feels underpowered. The 2.5L turbo engine works great and the 6-speed transmission is more than sufficient. The scroll wheel is intuitive and the physical buttons for HVAC are a plus. On the highway, the CX-9 feels smooth and quiet, with a high-end feel. The interior materials are also nice and the doors close with a satisfying thud. However, the front seats are tapered in the chest/shoulder area, which can be uncomfortable for some people. I would recommend taking the time to test the seats before making a purchase. Overall, we are happy with our decision and would recommend the CX-9 to others.I understand that the seats in the CX-30 may not be to everyone's liking, and it's unfortunate that they detract from an otherwise great car. It seems that Mazda may have prioritized a sporty look and feel over comfort, which may not be ideal for those using the car for long family trips. However, the firmness of the seats and quality of the leather are positives. It's important to keep in mind that different body types may have different experiences with the seats. Overall, while the seats may not be perfect for everyone, the CX-30 still offers a lot of value at its price point.

  3. Giovani Reichert 2025-03-05

The vehicle is a great value. If you're planning to lease, make sure to review Section 26 of the Mazda Financial lease agreement carefully. It's important to note that taking the vehicle to Canada without prior written permission is prohibited. Additionally, only the name lessee(s) are allowed to operate the vehicle.

  4. Benton Kirlin 2024-11-09

Hey there! Just a quick tip - before you try to sync your phone with the car bluetooth system, make sure it's compatible. Unfortunately, my Galaxy s8 didn't work for voice dialing or any functions needing the contacts. After checking the website, I found out that only older phones like the S6 and iPhone 6 are compatible. It was a bit frustrating, but I managed with an earpiece and dialing by hand. Hope this helps!

This is by far the best styled SUV. The lines, interior, sporty feel and handling are very nice. Plus, it has the room needed for family trips. However, the quiet ride does not distract me from the fact that the seats need more cushion and comfort for the long haul. Mazda is known for its sporty drive, and this CX9 doesn’t disappoint. But when it comes to dipping into luxury, I expect way more comfort. Its competitors have way more comfortable seats that are a must for long drives. My shoulders and back hurt after every long trip. The headrests do not adjust, so you’re left with not much flexibility in positioning for comfort. And it should have a bigger armrest between the front seats. I purchased this CX9 Touring in 2017 with 300 miles. The only maintenance so far has been oil changes and brakes. The infotainment screen cracked (a known issue by Mazda) but after fussing, they replaced it at no charge. I’m ready to get out of it for something more comfy for long trips. The problem is finding something with its style, class, sporty feel, and fun drive. I’m sure I can find something way more comfortable, but I must admit the style is second to none.

Positive 2019 Mazda Cx-9 car reviews

The CX-9 is a great fit for me as the only occupant 98% of the time. It boasts a stunning design and luxurious interior, with no cheap plastic in sight. The leather is superb, and the real aluminum trim on the doors and dash, as well as the beautifully machined aluminum knobs for the infotainment system, give it a high-end feel. Despite my initial reluctance to move from a V6 to a turbo 4 cylinder, Mazda has tuned this engine to perform, and the bountiful torque means you'll never notice the difference. The chassis and suspension deliver exceptional handling and a quiet ride overall. The suite of safety features, including lane keeping assist, adaptive cruise, reactive braking, and blind spot monitoring, are engaging and actually help you drive more safely. The head's up display is outstanding, providing speed, speed limit info, safety suite feedback, and turn-by-turn directions from the nav system. The 12 speaker Bose stereo is better than any factory system I've experienced in years. However, the front cockpit is a little snug, and the front seats could have more adjustment and longer cushions for better thigh support. Third row seating is a penalty box for other than small children, but I just folded them down and expanded my cargo capacity. Interior cabin storage is also very meager. Overall, the CX-9 is a fantastic choice for those seeking a stylish and luxurious crossover. The HVAC system is a bit slow to heat/cool the interior, but it's still acceptable. The ventilated cooled seats work very well. However, the infotainment/nav system is a bit clunky to use and looks dated in appearance. Your opinion on this will depend on what your last car was. Additionally, it takes quite a while to boot up. Although the Mazda CX-9 has a 360-degree camera, the resolution is poor, which is surprising given how far miniature camera technology has advanced in recent years. The piano black trim around the shifter and door window switches is quite fragile and will scratch easily. Finally, if you're into physical media, the CX-9 does not offer a CD player. Overall, after a month of ownership, I am enjoying my new Mazda and would recommend it to anyone who needs a crossover/SUV with more room than the 2-row models, but will rarely, if ever, need to put passengers in the very back. I researched mid-sized 3-row crossovers for over a year before making this purchase and highly recommend anyone shopping for any new vehicle to spend a lot of time studying owner's forums to get the straight scoop on potential problem areas. The Mazda CX-9 Grand Touring (FWD) beat out the Toyota Highlander Limited Platinum and Honda Pilot Touring in my evaluation. One year later, I'm happy to report that my CX-9 GT has been a trouble-free pleasure to own. I've had no difficulties with this SUV and have driven a little over 7,000 miles. It rides and handles great, and the performance from the 4-cylinder turbo engine is brisk. My only annoyance is the sluggish boot-up of the infotainment system, which occasionally won't load all of the Sirius/XM stations. On mostly rural backroads and highways, I get 22-24 MPG. As I start my third year of ownership of the 2019 CX-9 GT with FWD, I'm happy to report that, despite reduced activity in 2020 due to Covid, I've only put 11,000 miles on the odometer. So far, I've had a great experience with my CX-9. It's comfortable and sporty to drive, especially for an SUV. Maintenance has been routine, with just oil/filter changes needed. The only issue I've had is with the automatic folding side mirrors. Sometimes, when the car is unlocked and the mirrors are fully deployed, they will either close completely or start to close then reopen. However, this only happens when the car is parked and the engine is off. I did some research and found out that there is a TSB about the auto-folding mirrors, which my VIN is covered under. Although the dealership couldn't reproduce the problem, they did confirm that my car is covered under the TSB. Other than that, it's been a good experience. In the past 4 years, I've driven a little over 20K miles on my 2019 CX-9 GT FWD and continue to enjoy pretty much trouble-free motoring. The electric folding mirrors continue to do strange things, but the passenger side mirror stopped folding all the way in when locking the vehicle for a few months this past winter and the dealer couldn't find a problem. Lately, it has been operating normally. Mileage remains about the same around 22-23 MPG and occasionally 24-25 on longer highway trips. One thing to note for potential pre-owned buyers is that on the Mazda 24/7 owners forum, there is an ongoing thread about issues with this generation CX-9 with the turbo 4-cyl. Some owners are having coolant leaks due to an engine defect which requires a major repair and in some cases an entire new engine. It seems earlier model years or those with higher mileage are involved, but I'm monitoring this situation closely. So, if you're considering buying a pre-owned CX-9, caveat emptor. As mentioned last time, the Mazda CX-9 turbo 4 of this generation has some well-documented engine problems that you should be aware of before making a purchase. These issues are often reported on owner's forums like Mazda 24/7, and include a coolant leak due to a cracked cylinder head or an oil leak, both of which may require a complete engine replacement that can cost thousands of pounds. While there are TSB's out on this known problem, there is no recall, and some affected owners are understandably unhappy. If you're considering buying a used 2016-2022 CX-9, I would advise you to do some research on these owner's forums to know what you're getting into. Personally, I plan to ride this out until I replace my car in early 2025, since I don't drive that much and hope the lower mileage and wear and tear will spare me this problem. 5-YEAR UPDATE: Not much else to report, at ~24K miles I continue to have no difficulties with this vehicle other than the few issues with the side mirrors I've reported on before. Once in a while, the Sirius/XM tuner fails to boot up, and I have to stop/re-start the car or go online and have Sirius/XM send the authentication code to the radio, but this is a rare occurrence. I still plan to replace it come spring 2025.

I've been a loyal Mazda customer for years, having owned several Hondas and Acuras in the past. When I saw the redesigned CX-9, I was immediately drawn to its sleek new styling. After researching 3 row crossovers, I was impressed by the CX-9's great feedback and decided to take it for a test drive. I was blown away by the Signature model - it handled beautifully and looked stunning. I was able to negotiate a great deal on a new Signature at the end of the month, and I couldn't be happier with my decision. The CX-9 Signature may not have the same prestige as an Audi or Acura, but it's just as capable and stylish in my opinion. Plus, I love that it doesn't require premium gas like some other models. I highly recommend checking out the CX-9 Signature before making a decision on a Lexus, Acura, or Audi. You won't be disappointed!

The interior of the car is quite impressive, with high-quality leather used on both the doors and seats. This indicates that the car is built to last. However, the legroom horizontally from the knees could be better. The center console has a cushion, but the door trim panel does not. This is not as spacious as an American build. Apart from this, the car is luxurious and affordable. The cruise control mode is also great, as it slows down automatically if someone breaks or slows down in front of you. This technology is new compared to earlier generation styles of cruise controls. I have driven less than 1k miles on mine, and so far, it has been good. Let's wait and see what happens under good care.

I chose the 2019 CX-9 over the 2020 model because I preferred the upper trim level and didn't need the rear captain's seats. The 4-cylinder turbo engine provides more than enough power for my needs. While the technology is great, I find the navigation less than ideal as I often have to override it and it's limited while driving. However, the intuitive cruise control is awesome and the braking is top-notch. The fuel mileage is mediocre, but that's sometimes due to my right foot getting the better of me. Before purchasing the Mazda, I test drove all of the competition and found it to be the best option for me, although I didn't try the Hyundai. If you don't require the third row, I recommend checking out the CX-5. It has better mileage, is 10 inches shorter, but is identical in every other way. Next time, I would go with the CX-5. The overpriced European competition is pathetic, and Toyota and Honda's offerings are both mediocre too.

The test drive proved this car to be a top choice for an SUV of its class. The exterior and interior styling is stunning. However, I did notice that the leg space in the front cabin is quite narrow. As someone with disabilities affecting my right leg and hip, I would find any long distance drive to be very uncomfortable.
