2002 Dodge Ram wagon problems
The Dodge Ram Van (also known as the Dodge B-series) is a range of full-size vans that were produced by Chrysler Corporation from the 1971 to 2003 model years. Replacing the Dodge A100, the Ram Van transitioned to a front-engine drivetrain configuration. Mostly offered as a cargo van and a passenger van, the model line was also initially offered as a cutaway van chassis.
The B-series van line was produced across 32 years of production, making it among the longest-lived platform designs in American automotive history. Much of the exterior and chassis underpinnings saw only gradual changes during their entire production, with three distinct generations developed. Alongside its use by Dodge, the full-size van range saw rebranding during the 1970s for both Fargo Trucks and Plymouth (marking the debut of the Plymouth Voyager nameplate).
For much of its entire production run, Chrysler produced B-platform vans at the now-demolished Pillette Road Truck Assembly plant in Windsor, Ontario, Canada; prior to 1980, the model line was also produced at Saint Louis North Assembly (Fenton, Missouri). In 2003, the Dodge Sprinter (a rebranding of its Mercedes-Benz namesake) was introduced, replacing the B-series van entirely from 2004 to 2009. Since 2014, the Ram division has offered the ProMaster to the full-size van market, a rebranded Fiat Ducato.

Common 2002 Dodge Ram wagon problems
The 2002 Dodge Ram Wagon is known for several common problems, including transmission issues, window seal problems, lighting issues, body structure issues, and wheel bearing problems.
Transmission problems are particularly frequent in the 2002 Dodge Ram Wagon, with many owners reporting difficulty shifting and slipping. This issue can be caused by a variety of factors, including worn-out clutch plates, low transmission fluid levels, or faulty solenoids. In some cases, a transmission replacement may be necessary to fix the problem.
Window seal problems are another common issue in the 2002 Dodge Ram Wagon. Many owners report leaks around the window seals, which can lead to water damage and mold growth. This issue is usually caused by worn-out or damaged window seals, which can be replaced with adhesive kits or new seals.
Lighting issues are also common in the 2002 Dodge Ram Wagon, with many owners reporting problems with headlights, taillights, or turn signals suddenly stopping working. This issue can be caused by pinched wiring in the trailer hitch or problems with the TIPM. In many cases, the fix is low-cost if you're able to perform the work yourself.
Body structure issues are a significant problem in the 2002 Dodge Ram Wagon, with many owners reporting rust issues in the outer wheelhouse, upper wheel arch area of the bed, both driver and passenger side cab corners, both driver and passenger side rocker panels, and the oil pan. These rust problems can start out as a bubble or two in the paint and quickly turn into widespread cancer. To prevent rust issues, it's recommended to perform regular undercarriage cleanings and apply protective coating to the underside of the truck.
Wheel bearing problems are also common in the 2002 Dodge Ram Wagon, with many owners reporting issues with front wheel bearings wearing through. Wheel bearing replacement is usually necessary around 75,000 miles, with some owners reporting multiple replacements before 100,000 miles. A higher-pitched squeaking or squealing noise while driving can indicate a wheel bearing issue. If left unchecked, a wheel bearing issue can cause the wheel to freeze, causing the truck to dart or roll in that direction, which can be extremely dangerous, especially at highway speeds.
In summary, the 2002 Dodge Ram Wagon is known for several common problems, including transmission issues, window seal problems, lighting issues, body structure issues, and wheel bearing problems. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent many of these issues, but some problems may require more significant repairs or replacements.

I was then able to gain back control and gradually came to a stop on the right hand berm of the highway. The right rear tire appeared just as it does in the attached photos. POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-09-07
- VIN: 1D7HU16N42J
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Pinion nut became loose. It was caught before it totally fell off, however if it did fall off the rear axle could possible seize up and cause loss of control of the vehicle. This is a 2002 Dodge Ram with the 9.25" rear axle and they appear to still have issues to this day with that axle model. The recall Dodge had in 2009/10 does not even begin to cover the number of Dodge Ram/Dakota vehicles with this issue. The axle in this vehicle was replaced in 2009 for another issue with an axle retainer clip falling off and causing the internal assembly to grind on the boss for the axle. So as the original owner, and with only 137,140 miles on the vehicle in 19 years, it has had multiple problems fixed under warranty, including total axle replacement and now it will have rebuilt again. There should be a real safety concern for all Dodge pickups with the 9.25" rear axle and a recall for every one of them, not just 2009/10. This has been happening for 20 years. When will NHTSA step up and hold Dodge to task for this issue. Regards, [XXX] Minden, NV INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2007-06-13
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE
- Summary: A FEW YEARS AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED, THE DASH BEGAN TO DEVELOP CRACKS AND HOLES. THIS HAS GOTTEN WORSE AND WORSE TO THE POINT WHERE A DASH COVER HAD TO BE PURCHASED TO AVOID THINGS FALLING DOWN BEHIND THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER. CURRENTLY, THERE IS MORE MISSING THAN STILL IN PLACE IN THE VEHICLE. THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM IN THIS GENERATION, AND DODGE HAS NOT ADDRESSED IT, OTHER THAN TO CLAIM IT IS STRICTLY COSMETIC. THE PLASTIC PIECES ARE EXTREMELY SHARP, AND HAVE RESULTED IN A NUMBER OF SUPERFICIAL CUTS WHEN WORKING ON THE DEFROST VENTS, OR WHEN ADJUSTING THE CARPETED DASH COVER. OTHER PIECES HAVE FALLEN INTO THE VENTS AND THEN BEEN EJECTED INTO BOTH DRIVER AND PASSENGER'S FACES WHEN THE AIR CONDITIONER/HEATER ARE TURNED ON. PIECES OF PLASTIC RATTLE BEHIND THE DASH, AND HAVE FALLEN INTO THE AIR CONDITIONER CONTROLS AND RADIO HARNESS, POSSIBLY BEING THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE OF THE FRONT SPEAKERS (BUT NOT VERIFIED) IF THEY HAVE CUT THE WIRES. IF THE AIRBAG DEPLOYS, THE PERDON IN THE SEAT IS LIKELY TO BE BLINDED OR DISFIGURED FROM THE AMOUNT OF DANGEROUSLY SHARP SHRAPNEL, ASSUMING IT HAS NOT ALREADY BEEN CUT AND RENDERED USELESS. REPLACEMENT DASHES FROM DODGE ARE PRICED AT NEARLY $1,000, WHICH IS A RIDICULOUSLY EXORBITANT AMOUNT TO EXPECT CUSTOMERS TO PAY IN ORDER TO FIX A DEFECTIVE PRODUCT INSTALLED BY THE COMPANY. OVERLAYS OF DECENT QUALITY COST NEARLY A THIRD OF THAT.

We purchased this van for our family of six, including two adults and four teenagers who needed plenty of legroom. Even our dogs could fit comfortably with no problem. It's been so comfortable that we've found it difficult to consider upgrading. The only issue we've had is with the catalytic converter, which has needed to be replaced more than three times since we bought it. However, everything else has been great. Unfortunately, they no longer make this vehicle, but we still receive a lot of positive comments from the public.

I'm so glad to hear that you've been happy with your van since day one! It's great to know that the only problem you've had to repair has been a battery cable. I can imagine that it might be a bit of a tight squeeze in some parking structures, but it's wonderful to hear that you haven't had any troubles driving it despite its large size.
-
This van has been wonderful for our growing family. We took it on a trip from GA to MN, back to GA, and then to FL all in just 2.5 weeks. With ample room for our family of six, the vehicle performed flawlessly. We even pulled a camper from GA to AL and it had no trouble at all. We absolutely love it!
-
The car has less than 5000 miles on its tires and brakes. The seats and floor rugs are covered and look like new. The engine uses no oil between changes. I would drive it to Alaska tomorrow.

Your van sounds like it has been a reliable and comfortable mode of transportation for your family over the past ten years. I am so relieved to hear that your wife and child were able to walk away from a serious accident without any injuries. It's great to know that Dodge has done an excellent job in designing a safe vehicle that has served your family well. Although it is unfortunate that the cost of repairs outweighs the value of the van, I am glad that your family was not in a smaller or less safe vehicle. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

This vehicle had several issues, including repeated front bearing replacements, transmission problems, brake issues, and electronic troubles, despite being well-maintained. As a result, I decided to trade it in for a Toyota 4Runner.

This vehicle served well for our family van before being totalled in a wreck last week. However, it had some issues on the inside, especially with the front seats and the main sliding door. Dodge could improve the quality of their work inside this vehicle. On the bright side, the A/C was excellent, the engine was strong, and the suspension could use a little improvement.
Frederick Kihn 2024-09-27
The van gets 13 miles per gallon on the highway, which is not great, but it is a full conversion van. It seems to rattle a bit and the doors require a firm slam to close. Additionally, there is a constant clunking in the front that the dealer claims is normal (although I have my doubts).
Grady Spinka 2024-09-10
We replaced our 97 8 passenger B2500 with the 99 model. Although there were some aspects of the 97 that I preferred, overall the 99 is superior. It has lots of power and comfortable seating for my wife, 7 kids and me. It also came well-equipped from the factory. Unfortunately, we only get 12 MPG :-( but that's to be expected with the 5.9. I wish we had the limited slip for pulling the snowmobile trailer. The only real issue we've had is with bad ball joints early on, and a rare, intermittent engine ignition cut-out that the dealer can't diagnose.
Boris Jones 2024-07-18
We bought this amazing 12 passenger vehicle brand new in 2000 for our family of 6. It has a 360 cid, tow package and rear air, and has never let us down. Although we had to replace the front bearings once at 69,000, it has been mechanically rock solid. The only issue we have had is with the chronic squeaky brakes. The interior trim is of poor quality, with seat foam degradation, door panels coming loose and trim screws loose or falling out all over the place. However, we love the versatility of this vehicle, which is better than any SUV. It was invaluable when building my deck and toting big screen TVs home or for friends. One downside is that you're always on the call list to help people move. We are glad we had it, but now that the kids are grown, it's time to get a smaller vehicle.
